Dear Friends of Para Site, After 18 years of serving Hong Kong from a tiny space in Sheung Wan, making our contribution to our cityâ€™s thriving art scene and nourishing a community of people from different walks of life, Para Site is ready to turn the page for a second chapter in its existence. Early next year, we will open in brand-new premises in North Point/Quarry Bay. The much larger and upgraded exhibition facilities will bring Para Siteâ€™s infrastructure in line with its programmes and reputation as a leading Hong Kong and Asian contemporary art centre operating in a global context. But this change has not come overnight and is the result of a tremendous amount of work and dedication in building Para Site over the years. This past year, in particular, has been a record-breaking one for us, with the biggest press coverage of our events, the largest number of visitors over the

year and of any single exhibition, as well as the greatest number of iterations for Para Site’s touring exhibitions. Groundbreaking projects such as

Ten Million Rooms of Yearning. Sex in Hong Kong, Great Crescent: Art and Agitation in the 1960s— Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, Golden Heights Estate, Islands off the Shores of Asia, and Eros, among others, attracted thousands of visitors and received widespread coverage both regionally and globally. Hong Kong was for three days the global epicentre for performance art and contemporary dance during our annual conference Is the Living

Body the Last Thing Left Alive? The exhibition Taiping Tianguo, A History of Possible Encounters completed its international tour with a stop in New York earlier this year, while A Journal of the Plague

Year travelled to Taipei and Seoul and is getting ready for San Francisco in the spring of next year, at the same time as Great Crescent’s showcase at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.

This year’s auction is crucial for Para Site’s transformation into the art centre this city deserves. The community that came together two decades ago to found Para Site—the community that has stood by it at every step of the way, in harder times as well as in the more auspicious years, the community that we are humbly serving with all our work—has in great solidarity answered our call for a joint effort to produce Para Site’s largest auction to date. This year’s selection comprises extraordinarily high-quality lots from a mix of some of the most promising emerging artists to some of the leading figures both in Hong Kong and on the world stage. We are extremely grateful to all the artists and galleries who have donated this fantastic range of works, as well as to our rapidly expanding family of Founding Friends, Friends, Associates and supporters who have generously helped us bring our dreams within reach. Rental United is an artist collective formed in 2009 by Stephanie Sin (b. 1984), Damon Tong (b. 1979), and Timothy Zauhou (b. 1979). As a team, they are continuously developing works with performance elements and time-based live happenings, intending to experience with the audiences and cherish different reactions as they further explore their creativity. Instead of making or creating an art, Rental United used a commercial wedding photo service to accomplish a concept ‘as you like it’. In 2012, Rental United bought the cheapest pre-wedding photo package with 3000 RMB in Shenzhen, China. Without any creativity or artistic involvement in the process of production, they strictly followed all the instructions that were given by the pre-wedding photographer. Three artists—two men and one woman—tried to imitate what ought to be happened during a standard pre-wedding photo event, revealing their sweetness and joy of a marriage captured in the pictures.

Ricky Yeung Sau Churk (b. 1952, Hong Kong) lives

YHCHI’s imaginative, witty, and often politically pointed narratives—which evoke the film noir genre and other related styles—

including the Tate Modern, London; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the New Museum, New York; the Whitney Museum, New York; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. Most recently, they participated in the Mercosul 2011 Biennial in Porto Alegre Brazil and in the first Kiev Biennial in 2012.
