This popular annual event is sponsored by Paradise Irrigation District (PID). Kids Fishing Day features free raffles, prizes for catching tagged as well as “big” fish and a snack bar— and that’s all in addition to the opportunity to reel in some of the more than 4,400 pounds of catchable size trout, including trophy-size trout weighing seven pounds and more. Business Community Speaks out about Downtown Safety Project

T

he Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce surveyed its members and other community stakeholders in order to assess opinion regarding the Downtown Paradise Safety Project which will redesign Skyway between Pearson and Elliott roads, reducing the number of lanes from two lanes in each direction (4-lane layout) to one lane in each direction with a center two-way left-turn lane. According to the Town of Paradise:

By Monica Nolan

Executive Director, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce

The objective of the Downtown Paradise Safety Project is to address existing challenges along Skyway between Vista Way and Elliott Road. In the previous 10 years, over 90 injury collisions have occurred in

these limits, including 3 fatalities. The absolute priority for the subject project is safety. The Downtown Paradise Safety Project presents an opportunity for a public investment in the community by creating a safer commercial corridor which addresses high speeds, difficult crosswalks, limited parking, common collision hazards, and an aging roadway. These objectives may be achieved by accepting a reduction in lanes and small delays in travel time during the peak commute periods. In addition to enhancing safety, the slowing of traffic between Pearson and Bille Roads is expected to enhance the vitality of the downtown by slowing traffic and creating a more pedestrianfriendly environment.

The Town of Paradise has actively engaged the community in soliciting input for this project, and many skeptics have been converted after viewing the Downtown Safety Project presentation, which is available online at TownofParadise. com. Although 44% of our survey respondents reported that they did not view the presentation, our survey results indicate that the majority of those surveyed view the project in a favorable light. On May 13, Paradise Town Council will meet for Consideration of Final Plans and Specifications in Council Chambers at Paradise Town Hall, 5555 Skyway, at 6:00pm

I would like to see improvements in Ithe would like to see Downtown in order to promote improvementsin the and foster the downtown business Downtown in order to economy through tourism and promoteand visitation. foster the downtown business Paradise resident & business owner economy through tourism and visitation. Paradise resident& Business Owner

I so appreciate that the Downtown Safety Project grant monies are available to Paradise. The Downtown is so overdue for safety and road improvements! A slight slow down of traffic of only 13 seconds is nothing if it saves a life or injury. Plus the grant includes a road overlay, which is so needed on the Skyway. The other huge plus is the attraction of customers and new businesses and blight improvement to the Downtown. I see no negatives with this project, only positive changes. Paradise resident & business owner

Downtown Paradise should be a safe place for people to shop, cross the street, walk, cycle, and drive. It is a commuter route that needs to flow freely without interfering with our doing business and making money. I feel Paradise’s first priority is to Paradise. If someone wants to live in one town, pass through ours, and work in another town they are welcome to do that; however they need to be respectful of our town of Paradise. Paradise resident & business owner

Let’s do it. Paradise resident & business owner

Keep the main downtown area on Skyway looking nice and more attractive to visitors—it’s the first impression of our town. I think more visitors will be drawn from Chico and other areas to visit the new skating rink in winter, and it behooves the town to create an ambiance that makes people want to return for skating, shopping and other opportunities. And when they come, they should feel they can cross the street safely and find easy parking opportunities. Magalia resident

Reduction of vehicle accidents and personal accidents is primary here-not commute times! Paradise resident

& business owner

Paradise is the only town of its size that I know of that doesn’t have a dedicated downtown that is conducive to walking, easyaccess shopping, and with restaurants to enjoy. The traffic corridor and the septic issues seem to be two of the problems. I have missed having a “stroll-friendly” downtown for 42 years. How wonderful it would be to take visitors to “Downtown Paradise.” Well, perhaps in our lifetime... Paradise resident

In 1936, the lodge brethren constructed a building out of native stone on property donated by Dr. Mack and his wife. The cost was not to exceed five thousand dollars. This was a very serious undertaking, considering there was only $371.00 cash on hand at the time. After a couple of winters, it was discovered that the native stone was porous and the south and east wall leaked like a sieve from the wind-driven rains. Brethren who worked for P.G. &E. alleviated this problem through application of gunnite to the temple. The

able Mountain Masonic Lodge has been a proud member of the Paradise community since the early 1930’s, having travelled to the Ridge by way of Oroville and Cherokee. Oroville Lodge # 103 was barely a year and a half old when it became apparent that a second lodge was needed, and thus Table Mountain Lodge was organized in 1857. The first Master of Table Mountain Lodge #124 was George H. PID board adopts community-wide goal of 20% reduction

Overview of new wise water use guidelines * Water when?

George Barber

General Manager, Paradise Irrigation District

It’s our community’s water—and we need to save it for our future. That’s the reasoning behind the April adoption of a water conservation program by the Paradise Irrigation District board of directors. The plan was approved after input from district committees and a public hearing; it is in effect immediately. This resolution affects local residents and the business community and includes a community-wide conservation goal of 20% decrease in usage, implementation of water restrictions and suggestions for wise water use practices. Rather than a mandatory reduction in usage, directors voted to ask customers to actively conserve water on a voluntary basis with a goal of 20% water usage reduction community-wide. Also included in the plan are landscape restrictions (time/day/amount) and guidelines for wise water use. Adoption and enforcement of the plan allows PID to delay or avoid declaring a water shortage emergency and provides assistance in minimizing the effects of a drought within our community. Per the state water code, violations of the water conservation plan may be prosecuted as a misdemeanor. Repeat offenders, at the discretion of the district, may be placed on the district’s highest tiered payment rate or be subject to other administrative penalties. The full text of the resolution and the plan is available at ParadiseIrrigation.com. Customers may also request a copy by calling 877-4971.

No outdoor watering between 10 am and 8 pm. No more than 15 minutes a day per station. Water only on even/odd days, based on the last digit in your street address. For example, an address of 6254 waters only on even days; 6253 waters on odd days. No watering on the 31st day of a month.

Water what? • • •

No washing driveways or hard surfaces. No watering overspray on to paved or hardscaped areas (sidewalks, drives). When washing your vehicle, only use a bucket or a hose with a shut-off nozzle.

Water around our community: • •

Customers at ridge restaurants must ask for a glass of water; it will not be served automatically. Ridge motels and hotels must offer guests the option of no daily linen/towel service.

Your responsibilities: • • •

If PID notifies you that you have a leak, it’s your responsibility to repair it promptly. Voluntary 20% reduction in water use by all customers. Report any water waste you see to PID; call 530/876-2055.
