aradise Hospice’s annual holiday benefit tree lighting ceremony will take place Thursday, December 3 at 5:30 pm with refreshments, followed by a short program and music at 6:00 pm. At 6:30 pm, we will move to the Hospice House with candles where the trees will be lit. Light Up a Life, an annual event open to the entire community, offers a wonderful program to welcome the holiday season. Held at the LDS Church next to the Hospice House, 1275 Bille Road, the event features: • Festive Music • Special readings • A family tribute • A Holiday sing-along • A time for lighting candles • The Customary tree lighting This year, your stars will adorn the living room tree at the Hospice House, where they will be protected from the weather. There will also be companion stars with no names attached on the luminaries outside. After the tree lighting the Hospice House living room will be open to view the tree, have sweet snacks and again visit with friends. A community tradition, each year Paradise Hospice lights up many luminaries, sharing the memories of loved ones who have passed away or shining bright to honor living friends or family members.

Hospice House honors loved ones with lighted trees and luminaries during the holidays.

Light Up a Life is a great way to celebrate the holiday season while contributing to a noble cause. This event is an important campaign to ensure the continual support of Paradise Hospice in the community. Paradise Hospice provides compassionate medical care, counseling and spiritual support to hundreds of terminally ill patients and their families throughout Butte County. A $35 donation to Paradise Hospice will be acknowledged with a personalized star and shining luminary, remembering those special to you. A $100 donation will be acknowledged with a personalized star, shining luminary and a custom-designed porcelain Angel ornament as a keepsake for your own tree. Your special donation of $250 or more will be acknowledged as an event Sponsor on the Light Up a Life program and on the Hospice House appre-

Elks Honor Veterans at Pearl Harbor Night Paradise Elks Lodge 2026 invites Ridge veterans and their immediate families to Pearl Harbor Night on Monday, December 7 at Paradise Elks Lodge Grand Hall, 1100 Elk Lane. All I want for Christmas is a Sewer for Paradise Jody Jones Vice Mayor, Town of Paradise

aradise is the largest incorporated city west of the Mississippi wholly on septic systems. This is not a statistic to be proud of!! In our Business District (defined as Skyway, Pearson and Clark Roads) we have high ground water, poor soil, difficult topography and small lots. This results in regular septic system failures. On Skyway alone, we have 27 failed systems, 39 additional systems expected to fail in 5 years and 56 more systems expected to fail in 10 years. That’s a total of 122 parcels. Many of these properties do not have adequate replacement areas for leach lines, creating the dilemma of monthly pumping or closing the doors of businesses altogether. This situation forces the Town of Paradise to place restrictions on new and existing businesses, such as limiting the number of stations in hair salons, the number

of tables in restaurants and the number of employees that businesses can have. These restrictions are all septic-driven. Many studies have been performed and all conclude that the residential users in Paradise can remain on septic without a threat to groundwater if we have a good management system. (We do). However, the commercial areas in Town will require treatment or they will become a threat to the groundwater and the economy. The Paradise Town Council is tackling this issue head on and taking steps to prevent the decline of our groundwater and economy. The Town is in the process of preparing an application for funding of an environmental document that would examine alternatives for a sewer solution for the commercial district. On November 3, 2015 the Chico City Council approved a study to include the inclusion of a connection to the Chico Wastewater Treatment Plant as one of our alternatives. This would include a gravityfed 8 mile pipe with no interim hookups between Paradise and the City of Chico’s collection system. The environmental document will look at four alternatives:

1. Commercial Sewer Connection to Chico’s Waste Water Pollution Control Plant. 2. Small (enclosed in a building) Town of Paradise Sewage Treatment Plant. 3. Non-Sewage Treatment Plant Alternative (such as cluster systems or other) 4. No Project It will evaluate potential impacts from each alternative and propose appropriate mitigation measures. The studies will also include total project cost estimates as well as estimates of the costs for each business that hooks up. Socio-economic impacts and benefits will be quantified. Additionally, a capacity analysis of the Chico Wastewater Treatment Plant will be included. Once all of the studies are completed and answers obtained to all of our questions, a Preferred Alternative will be chosen. This alternative would

then move into design and ultimately to construction. The most likely funding sources are a local commercial utility district, grants and state and federal loans. Residential septic users will NOT be asked to pay for the project. The Commercial Sewer Project will allow Paradise to sustain itself and build a vibrant business district.

his past year, the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce has welcomed six new businesses that provide a wide and varied offering of retail and services. Our business community is growing despite the slow recovery from the recession, thanks in no little part to the local community’s support and desire to shop local. You’ve no doubt heard of Bobbi’s Boutique, located at 6181 Skyway. Longtime owner of HeavenScent Candles & Gifts, Nicki Jones, bemoaned the closing of Buttons & Bows when the Heins decided to retire. Nicki is never one to whine, but to do something to fix it. So, with Linda and Ralph’s blessing, she decided to open an upscale women’s clothing store to fill the need of such an establishment on the Ridge. If you are looking for stylish, well made women’s clothing, this is your place. And you can look forward to an expanded accessory selection in the near future. Nicki is Town proud and a community cheerleader, and is grateful for all the support from her customers on the Ridge. Johnny Appleseed Days Welcomes Record Crowds By Monica Nolan Executive Director, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce

he Golden State’s oldest harvest festival welcomed a record number of visitors thanks to tremendous media support from KPAY, Mix 95.1, The Blaze, KNVN, Stott Outdoor Advertising, The Paradise Post, and Paradise Cinema 7. Attendance was so high this year that the Pie Pavilion ran out of pies more than once, and baking stretched from three to four days at the Paradise Elks Lodge. The games plaza was staffed this year by Children’s Community Charter School, Avery’s Imaging, Miss Butte County Scholarship Program, Cub Scout Pack 316, Heartshine, The ARC Store, and Boy Scout Troop 770. The fest staged an art contest, and talented local artists walked away with hundreds of Ridgebucks, good as cash at 90 local merchants. Whole and by the slice, the sale of 900 pies provided operating revenue for the visitor’s bureau, putting out the “welcome mat to Paradise” with homemade pie baked with apples from Noble Orchards, the last remaining orchard on the Ridge. Dedicated pie bakers, too numerous to mention, gathered at the Paradise Elks Lodge for the three-day pie baking op-

eration. Bakers were treated to lunch from Black Bear Diner, Round Table Pizza, and Feather Canyon Retirement Community. Staging this Paradise custom with all its oven-ready parts is truly a labor of love and reflects the cooperation and creativity of our community. Many thanks to Mike Trinca, Jim Murphy, and the staff of Paradise Recreation and Parks District for tremendous event support and emergency wind damage control. Thanks to the Paradise Elks Lodge for its hospitality in hosting the pie baking. Festival of Trees Auction, Gala & Gift Faire

Following the gala, the Veterans Hall will be transformed into a beautiful holiday Paradise for Quota’s Annual Festival of Trees Gift Faire on Saturday, November 21, from 10 am til 5 pm. Admission is free. There will be lots of vendors with handcrafted as well as manufactured gift items, a raffle with great giftable items and entertainment to get you in the holiday spirit.
