Fees are charged for most programs, to cover a portion of the instructors, program supplies, maintenance and/or utility costs. Program sign-ups will be taken on a first come, first paid basis.

Payments may be made using cash, check, or ATM/Debit cards (with Visa/Master Card & Discover Logo), Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover!
REFUNDS: Refunds will be given only if cancelled by 3 p.m. the day following the first class session. Classes of four meetings or less must be cancelled one business day prior to the first class. A 20% processing fee will be charged per program and will be deducted from refunds. This does not apply to classes cancelled by the

DISTRICT MANAGER’S MESSAGE Welcome to the Winter Activity Guide 2021! Over the past few months, we’ve been hatching some ideas to serve our District. We also had a remarkably positive summer season with softball tournaments, activities at Paradise Lake, swimming at the Paradise and Concow Pools, and working with kids all over the District. Over the past few months, we’ve hosted essentially a World Series of Baseball Movies. We have a fantastic screen and projector, we provided food and fun, and we worked out the details of holding these events at different venues in Paradise and Magalia. While we hope that future events will be better attended, we are learning a lot from putting on these events and look for more in the future. We are also gearing up for a spectacular Ice Rink and Winter Wonderland. We know that not everyone skates, but all of us need some social interactions and fun pastimes, so we’ve developed a series and events, some of which will tie in with even more things to do in 2022. Our facility will be festive with lots of activities from Veteran’s Day to the Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday. With your feedback, we are pursuing improvements to registering for classes and getting the word out. New funding for trails and park amenities will kick-off in 2022 and we look forward to making life in our District better and healthier than ever.

Everybody Healthy Body, with generous funding from the Aaron Rodgers NorCal Fire Recovery Fund at North Valley Community Foundation, has created this program for the purpose of helping those directly or indirectly affected by the Camp Fire, as well as other recent fires, to re-engage in participating in organized sport or other recreation activities by reducing cost as a barrier. This voucher is for individuals and/or families and can be used for membership, registration or participation fees, as well as for recreational equipment. ELIGIBILITY MEMBERSHIP, REGISTRATION, OR PARTICIPATION FEE VOUCHERS •
Any individual who desires to participate in an organized sport or recreation activity that is provided by a recreation department, school district, or non-profit sports or recreation organization.

Any individual who is experiencing a financial barrier to participation caused directly or indirectly by the Camp Fire, or otherwise cannot afford to participate. • The program is available to residents of Butte and Glenn Counties for participation in programs that are offered within the boundaries of Butte and Glenn Counties.
•
Any individual who has not received a membership, registration, or participation voucher at any time during the previous calendar year. The voucher request may not exceed $250 per participant.
•
Applications must be submitted by case managers or a recreation department, school district, or non-profits sports or rec department on behalf of the individual.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT — KIRK WILLIAMS Kirk comes to PRPD with a background in teaching very cool subjects such as Physics, Physical Science, and Technology. As a local to Butte County, Kirk has been engaged in the local music scene as a performer, instructor, and advocate for the arts. Kirk will be working with Paradise Charter Middle School, instructing a course titled “Electronics and Coding with Arduino” in the Fall while assisting with events and other recreation programming. PRPD continues to expand our
community partnerships, serving educational institutions by teaching courses on school sites, leading field trips to parks and natural locations, and engaging students in STEAM courses that will prepare them for the ever changing job landscape in technology and electronics. Upon a successful implementation at PCMS, Kirk will be hosting this course for the public in the Spring of 2022. Join PRPD in welcoming Kirk to our team!

Well, if you haven’t your senses are in for a treat! Through a collaboration between community partners, tree clearing near the gazebo and pavilion have opened up views of the canyon that have not been seen in decades. On a clear day , visitors can see all the way across the valley!

EXPECTATION MANAGEMENT AMIDST CHANGING CONDITIONS As our community continues to find ways to stay lite-footed amidst the ever changing landscape of Covid related restrictions and poor air quality from Nor-Cal fires, PRPD is striving to increase our communication with class participants, parents, and event attendees. Pre-class, event, and registration emails and phone calls from our staff will communicate changes to sites, program times, and postponements or cancellations as soon as staff has adequate information to assess the specific program. We appreciate your understanding, patience, and flexibility in those situations that may not turn out as we have planned. If PRPD has learned anything from the past few years of navigating challenges on The Ridge, its that we need to be cautiously optimistic when planning classes, events, and programs.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when reserving a park site or signing up for classes: •
PRPD follows all local guidelines for COVID 19 protocol, including mask recommendations
•
PRPD has indoor and outdoor venues available for reservation
•
Reduced participant and visitor recommendations are in effect in relation to the Tier that Butte County sits in at the time of the event, class, or reservation date.
•
The earlier you reserve or sign up for a class, event, or reservation, the more time to both parties have to overcome unforeseen changes. The early bird gets the worm!

YOUTH SPORTS YOUTH CROSS COUNTRY MEETS This program will provide cross country running races that are open to individuals and school teams. The running course will be set up at Bille Park with the start near the meadow area. There will be different race distances for the following grade levels: K-2nd (.2 miles), 3rd-5th (.6 miles), 6th-7th (1 mile), 8th (1.6 miles). Instructor: Recreation Staff Dates: Thursdays, first races start approximately 3:45 pm Session: September 16 – October 21 Location: Bille Park upper meadow Grades: K through 8th. Fee: $25.
LITTLE BALLERS BASKETBALL This beginning basketball program will introduce boys and girls in 1st through 4th grade to the sport of basketball. Emphasis will be on skill development, athletic awareness, and learning the fundamentals of the game. Smaller basketballs and hoops may be used to aid in learning. Instructor: Tyler Woodcox Dates: Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 pm Session: 9/14-2/8 Location: Pine Ridge School Gym Ages: 1st-4th grade. Fee: $80
YOUTH BASKETBALL SKILLS
TEEN DROP IN BASKETBALL
This basketball program for boys and girls is geared towards beginning through intermediate level athletes. The class will cover the basic skills needed for the game. The format of the program will depend on participation numbers, but will lean toward skill challenges, scrimmage games, and practicing.
This Friday night drop-in basketball program is set up for players of all skill levels. Come on up to the Cedarwood Gym for exciting pick-up games or just to shoot around.

YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL SKILLS This youth sports program will teach the basic fundamentals of flag football through drills, practice, and scrimmage play. Football skills taught will include passing, receiving, running, kicking, flag pulling, and positions of the game. Class format depends on number of participants. BALLET
This drop-in program will allow classmates from Magalia/Paradise a chance to interact with their peers in a positive environment. Students will build social skills while participating in video game play and other activities. Participant waiver needed for program.
This class introduces children to the fundamentals of ballet. It will include ballet positions, barre and floor exercises, balance and coordination in a fun learning environment. Both girls and boys are welcome.

JUDO The art of Judo is a traditional Japanese martial art derived from the art of Jujitsu. It teaches the principals of duty, honor, discipline, responsibility, and respect. It will teach the student body awareness and control through rolling, falling, throwing, and grappling. With the training of Judo you will gain confidence, physical fitness and skill. Through the Healing Trauma Through Nature initiative, funded through the North Valley Community Foundation, we are proud to provide resilience-based workshops, field trips, and adventure programming (Kayaking, Hiking, Ropes Courses, and more) that will help your students experience standards-based curriculum. STAY AND PLAY
This program is designed to provide a varied and exciting experience for children 3-5 years. Activities will enhance socialization, assist in building self-confidence, and provide some educational experience. Children will participate in crafts, games, circle time, sharing, creative play, and other activities. Each session will have different planned activities. Children must be 3 years old and potty trained by the first day of class.
These hour-long classes encourage your child to explore the world around them. Your child will participate in hands on activities giving them the opportunity to share and use their creative side. Children are asked to bring a small lunch or snack to class. See the day and title of each class listed under the session.

TEACHER LORI - 30 YEARS OF SERVICE Teacher Lori has a multi-generational rock-star status among the numerous residents that have had the opportunity to participate in her Tiny Tots programs, Cross -County, Pinewood Derby events, and other holiday events. Lori has brought so much happiness to our residents over the years that many of them continue to keep in touch with her even after they have long-aged out of Tiny Tots. HEALTH AND FITNESS TAI CHI & QI GON This beginning through advanced adult Tai Chi class is designed to create body awareness, improve strength, extend range of motion, improve balance, and lower blood pressure. Parks Make Life Better Whether a visitor to the Ridge or a Community member living on the Ridge, the Pandemic has likely taken its toll on your health and wellness in both small, immeasurable ways and(if you are like me), has taken its toll on your waistline. As the seasons turn from hot and smokey to cool and colorful, I am excited to turn the page towards a new perspective on health and wellness— simplicity. My renewed health and wellness goals are rooted in a sentiment long forgotten behind the complexity of flatscreens, Disney + streaming, and masked visits to the grocery store; prioritize time in nature for a chance to engage in a healthy, balanced self care routine.
YOGA – GENTLE AND THERAPEUTIC In this class participants will practice gentle yoga that concentrates on compression, cross fiber, and pin and stretch movements. Participants will use recovery balls for tissue healing, myofascial glide, range of movement, and restoring elastic potential of muscles. Please bring your own mat and blanket to class. This simple sentiment extends to our students, children, and tiny learners. If “us adults” are feeling the challenges extended by the Pandemic, it is no stretch to assume that our youngest members of the community could use a play date at the park as much, if not MORE, than us staunch adults! Best of all, the benefits of visiting the park with youngsters is mutual. Watching my little girls frolic in the Bille Park meadow has transformed a frowny day full of zoom meetings into a day with grass stains on my knees and a heart full of joy on multiple occasions. ADULT PROGRAMS PICKLEBALL Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States and PRPD has three outdoor courts available for all ability levels. Pickleball is a fun and lively game that is easy to learn. It is played on a badminton sized court with special paddles and a plastic ball. PRPD will be offering drop-in times two days a week. Some paddles and balls available to use. Rain will cancel the program. BASKETBALL – ADULT DROP-IN This adult basketball program will get started up again as soon we have access to the PUSD gymnasiums. Teams will be formed each Wednesday for scrimmage play. COOKING - BRAZILIAN STYLE With fresh veggies sourced from FARMALOT and the Love Support Farm, “Eat Four the Seasons” will teach you how to cook and appreciate delicious, healthy, simple meals using local organic ingredients. Load up your kayak, your significant other, and your sense of wonder for a sunset paddle on Paradise Lake followed by a tour of the night sky led by the experts from the Chico Observatory. With very little light pollution, Paradise Lake is ideal for stargazing in the Fall and Winter seasons. Through Everybody Healthy Body, a Butte County Health Initiative, up to $250 in registration or other participation fees can be applied for by your program leader at PRPD. By reducing the cost of recreation or play activities, the Aaron Rodgers Recovery Fund seeks to support recreation for those who have been affected by the recent fires. Please inquire at the time of registration. Through Every Kid Sports as part of the Dicks Sporting goods Foundation. Under the Sun Events We are excited to announce that the Paradise Trail Run is coming back to the ridge this year. This annual event was last held in October of 2018. After a 3-year absence, interest for the event is high and we anticipate 250 runners participating this year. Join us on Saturday, October 23, 2021, for a fall morning trail run at the beautiful and serene Paradise Lake! This event will offer 1-mile (the 1-mile is free and untimed), 4-mile and 9-mile options all surrounding the lake under the tall pines. The course is mostly flat and plenty wide! What's better than a cool fall run in the mountains?! You can register for the race at the following link: https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/Magalia/ParadiseTrailRun Under the Sun Events will be putting on this race in cooperation with the Paradise Recreation and Park District and are currently looking for local businesses to sponsor the race and join us as partners. We will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Paradise High School Cross Country team, so your sponsorship helps increase the amount of money that we are able to donate. We have several opportunities to promote local businesses as part of the event and expose them to our base of runners. We would love to use this event to drive folks to your business, especially those from off the ridge. Some of the opportunities are to be a presenting sponsor for the race, sponsor race awards, sponsor mile markers and sponsor the start/ finish line. We are also looking for businesses who would be willing to provide deals to runners such as discounts on hotel stays for the race, discounts on meals/beverages on race day with a race bib, and discounts on other services. We would also love to have a packet pick-up at a location in Paradise on the Thursday evening before the race. We are willing to work with you to find something that works for you and fits in with the spirit of the event. We are hoping to begin our monthly pot lucks on the 3rd Saturday of each month after a long break due to Covid. HONEY RUN BRIDGE ASSOCIATION NEWS Drop by the new Leah Lokan Little Free Library next to the restrooms at the Covered Bridge. The Free Library is a replica of the Covered Bridge built by canyon resident Dave Wilson and Donated by Dave, his wife Julia Westlund, and her brother and sister in law, Lain and Yvonne Westlund. It is named for our late canyon friend, Leah Lokan. Come by and “check out” a book while appreciating the intricate woodwork that Dave performed on the Bridge replica.
BUTTE CREEK ECOLOGICAL PRESERVE
There was an August meeting at the Centerville Schoolhouse regarding CSU’s planned transfer of the Honey Run Road’s Butte Creek Ecological Preserve to the Mechoopta Indian Tribe. Another meeting will take place for all interested Canyon residents.

RECREATION SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT Scott Amick M.A. Scott became a member of the PRPD team in early 2019 and has become a valuable leader in our organization since signing on. A Camp Fire Survivor, Scott and his wife, Jenna, are planning to raise their two little girls on The Ridge. “I envision The Ridge, in ten years, consisting of a renewed sense of vibrant culture revolving around our natural amenities, our strong community partnerships, our outdoor recreation and event opportunities, and our sense of personal and community wide resilience. I see the Ridge as a great place to raise a mentally and physical healthy Family.” Scott will be coordinating the Healing Trauma Through Nature program, leading school field trips, hosting next generation STEAM camps(such as Drone Camp and Camp Courage), and working with community partners to develop recreational and educational programs throughout the District. Located In the heart of Paradise along the Skyway, the Center is the home of PRPD, most of the District’s programs, and many community meetings and events. TARC hosts the Ice Rink and special events such as the Chocolate Festival, Johnny Appleseed Days and the Gold Nugget Craft Faire. Many people enjoy this lovely park and stroll, play, or rest under the shade trees. Located in Lower Paradise, the Aquatic Park makes a lovely setting for the public swimming pool, nature trail, duck pond, individual picnic sites, a group site and outdoor arbor. In the summer months, the Park provides the location for the Aquatic Park Camp, recreational swimming and swimming lessons. Facilities: Swimming pool, a Group area that can accommodate 150 people with BBQ’s and picnic tables. There are also single picnic sites, a playground area, kids fishing pond and beautiful shade trees. The pool, arbor, group and individual sites are available for your summer events.

The original park features a group area, playground, and lots of picnic with shade. Each site come with a BBQ, table, benches and a nearby water source. The park has ample parking, children's playground and a large grassy area. The counselor’s area is used for social gatherings or just a resting place after a trek along the nature trails. Bille Park Expansion boasts a gazebo, pavilion and even a kitchen that can also be rented for events of up to 120 people. The features of this park blend cohesively to give any outdoor event an air of elegance among the natural setting of the Ridge. Walkways connect the parks and peek over into the canyon’s natural beauty.
Coutolenc Park 364 acres on Coutolenc Road
The park sits on 340 acres on Coutolenc Road above Magalia. Hiking is encouraged. There is an archery range with 42 targets, NFAA certified.
Moore Road Park Paradise, CA
Located in Upper Paradise, the Moore Road Park is unique in that it has two ball parks, a playground area, a riding arena, a dog park and a ropes course. This facility is used year round by many different users. The ball park can also be rented for your private use.
Crain Memorial Park Concow, CA
The hidden gem of Butte County is located in Concow and reopened in October 2017 with a picnic area, restrooms, native plant trail, drinking water, play structure and nice meadow area.
