Half-a-Century Celebration Fifty years ago, Sarah “Renee” LaFountain and Peter Allan Roos were wed in St. Petersburg. It rained 8” that day. Renee, a Tampa native, was a ballerina and the acrobatic star with the Florida Ballet Theatre. She went on to teach dance for 30 years, helping to shape young minds and bodies. Peter was a recent immigrant, a graduate of Canadian high schools, an SPJC student who was helping his dad open a campground on Lake Tarpon and US19. They met at the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg Junior College in a “Government” class. How he knew at such a tender age that Renee was the soul mate he could have spent his life searching for is still a mystery. Renee was older so Peter lied, and the couple celebrated his 24th birthday four months before he had to admit he was only 19. By then it made no difference.

They lived, played and even worked together for most of the past 50 years too, with 40 years of it in publishing. When asked what contributes to the longevity of their relationship, they most often say, “We learned to say, ‘You are probably right.’” That little phrase diffuses arguments over the most trivial things before they can form hard feelings.

“Mutual respect and admiration are also critical.”

Many people from our parent’s generation saved for retirement so they could “start to enjoy life.” Many never made it. Renee and I decided to enjoy how we make a living, and to really enjoy a lengthy vacation together every year. Our anniversary is August 15th and Renee’s birthday comes five days later. We have come to vacation in Colorado that time of year.

With enough elevation, we can always find a cool spot to break up the humid 90 degree summers here. We call them “honeymoons” instead of vacations.

In June we started our 50th honeymoon. Years ago we met a fellow from whom we borrowed a classic Saab convertible each summer for a dozen or so years. For our 50th anniversary gift we bought one almost like it on Ebay. In June, we picked it up in Tucson and drove it 3,000 miles before parking it at its new home near Frisco, Colorado.

We were all over Colorado with it. We even drove 100 miles to Del Norte for lunch and to see Corey Hubbard (Hubbard’s Marina…) at her new “General Store” there.

Our trip did not start out so well. If not for an extremely good Samaritan with skills who found us broken down, we likely would not have made it to our paid-for hotel room 100 miles away in Winslow, AZ, that night. This young home builder from Payson, Arizona, had a rack with tools nearby and was feeling generous with his time toward a couple his parent’s age.

We admitted we were trying to enjoy a few weeks in our newly acquired mountain explorer.

We “took it easy” and we made it to La Posada Historic Hotel in Winslow, Arizona, and to every other destination we set for ourselves. The following day we drove through Petrified Forest National Park and slept that night in Mesa Verde National Park.

Three major changes took place in the past 60 days which will have far-reaching implications for The Centre. They include the opening of Kuba en La Playa, an award-winning Cuban restaurant, complete with a walk up window and outdoor seating, and the permitting of a 4COP license allowing the event facility and KUBA to sell liquor, beer and wine.

The third is the elimination of restrictions on meetings and events due to COVID-19.

Achieva Credit Union As Achieva Credit Union’s corporate office settled plans for a more hybrid workforce in 2021, the credit union also worked to evolve the use of their Dunedin headquarters. Beginning earlier this year, Achieva began leasing about 5,000 square feet of the 67,000-square-foot headquarters facility to other local companies in need of office space. Their first lease went to digital marketing company, Hyloq, who due to office building shutdowns in the pandemic, had been in need of a workspace. Achieva Credit Union was listed among the Tampa 8

Cross Bay Ferry could add year-round service Under a tentative contract agreement, the Cross Bay Ferry could be adding year-round service between Tampa and St. Pete beginning fall 2024. The new deal, which still needs formal approval from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, Tampa and St. Pete, is a four-year contract that calls for service to be extended by a month, from April 30 to May 31 in 2023 and to June 30 in 2024.

The year-round service would begin Oct. 1, 2024.

Florida Fishing Pier Finder Looking for a land-based fishing spot?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and others have created a GIS-based Fishing Pier Finder to allow anglers to find publicly accessible fishing piers, jetties, fishing-specific bridges, and fingers around the state. There is a website as well as a free app – search for “Fish Hunt FL”. This tool allows you to filter Florida’s 600+ fishing spots based upon their name, the city or county they exist, feature type and whether a fishing license is needed.

The results provide names, addresses and features of each site. The app also allows you to easily purchase and renew your license, find fishing and hunting regulations, and discover tide and sunrise/sunset measurements at area stations.

TIDBITS SKYWAY MARINA DISTRICT___________ Developer plans to build mixed-use project in Skyway Marina District Developer Jack Dougherty is planning to create a new mixed-use project in the emerging Skyway Marina District, adjacent to his current development. Plans have been filed for the St. Pete Development Review Commission to review a proposed mixed-use project at 4311 34th St. S. The project entails constructing an eight-story, 400-unit residential building, a 4,500-square-foot restaurant, a 95,000-square-foot self-storage facility and a 2,400-square-foot bank with a drive-thru, according to the plans filed. The site is adjacent to the 245-unit Marina Walk apartment complex, which is currently under construction. The residential apartment building dubbed Marine Beach will overlook Boca Ciega Bay. ST. ST PETE BEACH_____________________ Parking Study & Survey The city of St. Pete Beach is conducting a study to reevaluate the current off-street parking requirements in the Land Development Code.

The current parking requirements were incorporated into the code in 2005, and since then many changes have occurred in the parking and transportation environment.

Furthermore, outdated off-street parking requirements promote quantity over quality, focusing on ensuring an ample supply of parking.

Corey Landing The development team behind the proposed $90 million mixed-use project in St. Pete Beach publicly unveiled conceptual renderings and plans for the first time.

South Florida-based real estate firm Ram Realty Advisors presented glossy renderings of the planned waterfront development dubbed Corey Landing during a public meeting at St. Pete Beach Community Center. The images revealed a modern building that would have 243 Class-A residential units along with more than 10,000 square feet of retail space to the east end of Corey Avenue.

“We really want to attract hyperlocal residents,” explains Boyd Hill Nature Preserve Supervisor Andrea Andersen, “including folks from Midtown, local school groups, and scouting groups, as well as tourists.”

Chris and Ryan returned from a 13-year run performing overseas on the islands of Saipan and Guam. After performing over 7,500 shows for more than 2 million people, they decided to bring their astonishing brand of magic and grand illusion back to the United States. They toured 26 states and chose St. Petersburg because they wanted to raise their son Oliver in a family-friendly community that supports diversity and LGBTQ parents.

“St. Petersburg ticked off all our boxes,” explains Chris.“A warm climate with palm trees and beaches (no Michigan winters), a great place to raise our son, a worldclass arts and entertainment industry, a popular tourist destination and a great place to live and work. We believe that our theatre will draw people from all over the country (and the world) and is a refreshing addition to the local scene.”

An intimate and unforgettable evening of magical entertainment fits the bill for date night, an opportunity to escape reality with a group of friends or the chance to seek a mind-boggling activity the whole family can enjoy together.

“Chris and Ryan Zubrick cut a stunning picture with their unique and fresh look.

Their St. Petersburg show is more personal. When they performed abroad, their audience spoke multiple languages,

In the new theatre, they weave together stories about growing up, their family, their heroes like Lance Burton and they perform illusions inspired by their history and love of magic. Be prepared for an ethereal firefly illusion reminiscent of summers in Michigan. Even Oliver gets into the groove, telling Daddy and Papa Zubrick that he will perform there one day and pointing out things at the store they need for the theatre.

“Magic creates a childlike wonder in all of us,” says Chris. “After this year’s pandemic, we all need some magic in our lives. It’s the perfect time to open our theatre.”

It’s no wonder the duo has been showered with awards such as “The Merlin Award” in 2018 for Best Family Magic Show, the industry’s highest honor.

Previous recipients included Penn & Teller, Criss Angel and Siegfried & Roy. Other kudos include Magician of the Year, Best Stage Act, Best Costume and Trophy of Excellence from prestigious entertainment and industry groups.

Big Cypress National Preserve is just a few hours from St. Pete, bordering the Everglades National Park. The Oasis Visitor Center’s long boardwalk is a great spot for big gator sightings. On the way back to camp, we drove down the 22-mile gravel road known as The Loop, and stopped by Florida’s legendary Clyde Butcher Gallery to see his powerful black and white landscapes of the area.

He is definitely the Ansel Adams of the swamp!

The Foundation for a Healthy St Petersburg

has roots going back more than a century to 1906 when a 15-bed clinic was built to serve as St. Petersburg’s first centralized health care facility. Soon after, the five-room Good Samaritan Hospital was built and by 1910 the city had raised $10,000 in bond issues to build a 22-bed facility called Augusta Memorial. The former Good Samaritan Hospital became a separate facility to serve the city’s African-American community.

In 1923, the hospital became known as Mound Park Hospital, eventually with 725 beds, making it one of the finest hospitals in the southeastern United States at the time. In 1968, the city exited the hospital business and leased the then-existing facilities to Bayfront Medical Center, Inc., a private, not-for-profit organization, renaming the hospital,“Bayfront Medical Center.”

Development continued in the mid-1980s with a new emergency and trauma center, new intensive care, neurology and cardiac care units, and a new obstetrics program with perinatal and

In the years to come, Bayfront earned a Level II emergency/trauma center designation and implemented the Bayflite Emergency Helicopter Transport System. Today, the Bayflite program services 13 counties and is the only Medical Flight program in the southeastern United States to carry blood.

In early 2013, Bayfront Health Systems, Inc., entered into a strategic partnership with Health Management Associates (HMA). After changing its name to Bayfront Health Education and Research Organization, Inc., it sold substantially all of the assets of the hospital and its related health care facilities to a newly formed company named Bayfront HMA Healthcare Holdings, LLC. HMA owned 80% of that company (through affiliates) and Bayfront Health Education and Research Organization, Inc. (through a subsidiary) owns 20%.

HMA assumed management of the hospital, which was then re-named “Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.”

In early 2014, Community Health Systems, Inc., one of the nation’s leading operators of general acute care hospitals, acquired HMA and its affiliates and subsidiaries, and took over HMA’s management responsibilities and 80% interest in ownership. From the very beginning, the hospital has had

a rich history of service to the community, annually providing many millions of dollars in charity care.

In March 2015, Bayfront Health Education and Research Organization, Inc., renamed itself as Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, Inc. The Foundation was converted from a public charity to a private health foundation, with Randall H. Russell as president and CEO. It has more than $180 million to fund its mission and is the largest grantmaking foundation in St. Petersburg.

Foundation staff provided a sampling of successes from 2015-2017: Disabled persons helped with permanent and movable ramps for rental units, permanent homes and vertical porches for permanent homes; Methadone program for mothers, with 134 individuals receiving methadone treatments, counseling and support coupled with family case management; LealmanFamily Dream Center – two vans provided over 1,000 residents in poverty transportation in one year, with vans now used for service for COVID testing and vaccinations; Reached 6,000 South St. Pete residents through events focused on Community Navigation highlighting available services previously unknown by residents; Bought a new walk-in cooler and freezer, two refrigerated box trucks, two forklifts and two pallet jacks for St. Pete Free Clinic, expanding their capacity to serve people by 400%; Healthy Schools for Healthy Children – worked with Pinellas County School District to update teacher practice and expand physical activity with increases in grades for prior lower-performing students, reaching 45,000 students in 61 schools.

A sampling of successes from 2017-2019 includes: Strategic shifts – listening showed that capacity support was needed to help manage grants regarding evaluation of hiring needs, financial, program delivery and goals and objectives. This influenced the Foundation’s Capacity Building effort to help support dozens of nonprofits and their boards. The Foundation also recognized that race equity data collection was needed. It launched “convening” sessions among providers, funders and learning partners including a shift in funding to BIPOC-led organizations, funded master class facilitation classes, invested in the Equity Atlas and Community Health Needs Assessment with the Health Department, education reports, Housing Scan, Health/Race Equity Supplemental Report and began requiring disaggregated race data collection. This led to 2017=29 grants, 2018=21 grants, and 2019=41 mini grants ($5,000 each to 100% BIPOC-led).

The 2018-2020 empowerment grants reached 23,819 individuals (from 74% of agencies reported numbers); Assisted with legal services for people facing eviction, enabling more than 300 families to maintain housing; Civics Education - South Pinellas Youth were trained to advocate and published St. Pete Civic Health Index including race equity; League of Women Voters– financial literacy for immigrants (predominantly LatinX) was provided to 500 families through Project Prosper; Increased

the ability for funded partner organizations to fundraise more effectively resulting in approximately 1,000,000 new dollars in fundraising by smaller nonprofits; 24 Head Start and Early Head Start centers in St. Pete received counseling and support to increase care and outcomes for children through improved care of staff and leaders; 150 Jordan Park residents were supported through after-school tutoring and weekend activities through the Police Athletic League; Through the Lighthouse of Pinellas, over 80 persons with serious mental illness employed; and Pinellas County Homeless Leadership Board collaborated with eight agencies allowing for a “housing first” model instead of using shelters as the first place of residence for homeless persons.

The foundation strongly supported the St Pete2020 goals and will continue its support for the StPete2050 initiative.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, but people don’t think of it as another system that needs to be maintained and cared for.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and early detection of serious skin conditions like melanoma is crucial.

For some, your primary-care physician may be the only doctor you visit regularly. Because of this, your primary-care physician may be the first clinician to see signs of this potentially deadly disease.

While a dermatologist is the expert, your family doctor can be a starting point in evaluating your skin for cancer. In fact, according to a study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, skin care screenings performed as part of a routine primary-care provider visit resulted in increased detection. My patients typically bring up any concerns about a strange bump or mole as an afterthought during an appointment for another issue, and I’m more than happy to check it out for them.

It’s very reasonable to ask your primary-care doctor to take a look.

If you have a mole or other growth that concerns you, your family doctor can usually let you know if it’s normal or needs further investigation. I can at least offer some level of peace of mind.

As with any serious disease or condition, prevention is so important.

Even minor sunburns cause lasting damage, and repetitive sun injury causes skin breakdown which can lead to skin cancer. Living here in Florida definitely increases your risk for developing skin cancer.

Research has shown that having five or more sunburns actually doubles your risk for melanoma. Also, keep in mind that some medications, like antibiotics, can increase your sun sensitivity.

The bright side? With early detection and treatment, almost all skin cancers can be successfully removed without complications.

So prevent damage first, and then catch it early, The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends seeing a dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam, and you can remember this as “on your birthday, examine your birthday suit.”

Mudslides: Speaking of Kahlua, publisher Renee’s favorite sip is also in vogue, a Mudslide best made with homegrown Kahlua.

Ingredients: 2 cups vodka, 2 cups white sugar, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon vanilla and ½ cup Café Bustelo instant coffee crystals. Directions: Bring the water to a simmer and stir in the sugar, vanilla and coffee crystals. Simmer at low heat for about ten minutes until the mixture resembles a syrup. Let syrup cool. While Tampa’s Ybor City earned the reputation for being the center of Cuban culture and cuisine in Tampa Bay, two new venues, just a block apart on Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach offering “World Famous” Cuban sandwiches, have definitely raised the bar. “Our favorite restaurant at Armature Works in Tampa was KUBA,” said Richard Nummi, “now we can pick up dinner at KUBA Cocina on Blind Pass and enjoy a sunset at the beach.”

KUBA ‘en La Playa’ (at the beach) opened a walk-up service window last month at 7525 Blind Pass Road. It was big news for Tampa Bay, with a photo of KUBA’s proprietor Felicia and the art on the side of the Centre of St. Pete Beach given the entire cover page of the Tampa Bay Times Taste section one Sunday. Recently added picnic tables, shaded by sun shields, are available on a first-come basis. Open daily Monday-Saturday 10am-10pm and Sundays 10am-7pm.

There is also limited indoor seating and access to restrooms is available at The Centre of St. Pete Beach. KUBA’s Cuban sandwich won a coveted prize in a Tampa competition and is considered a world-class Cuban sandwich. They even have a breakfast Cuban.

KUBA just opened at the Centre of St. Pete Beach in June and is already attracting attention. Amenities continue to improve the dining experience, which includes a traditional Cuban coffee maker offering top quality coffee specialties including our favorite Café Con Leche.

KUBA has also submitted an application for a liquor license and plans a premium full liquor bar by the time summer is over.

Just one block north of KUBA’s new location is the other new venue for Cuban cuisine in St. Pete Beach.

Mastry’s was the beaches’ first craft brewery and has won more than its share of statewide quality competitions since they started brewing in a converted gas station five years ago. Mastry’s Kitchen, an onsite food truck, has recently joined the Cuban infusion by partnering with Pipo’s Original Cuban Café on Bay Pines Blvd. across from the VA hospital. Pipo’s founder and owner, Ramon Hernandez has wished for a location on the beach for years. He enthusiastically made Mastry’s Brewery the first location for Pipo’s Pronto.

SHARABLES are a half dozen appetizers, including such favorites as boneless wings with your favorite sauce, crispy calamari, sweet and spicy grilled pork belly, empanadas, mojo cotija fries, and fresh corn chips and choriqueso (cheese) made with melted award-winning Mastry’s brown ale.

PLATES include popular quesadillas with choice of protein or vegetables, a taco salad with optional meat, shrimp or grouper, Pipo’s roasted mojo pork served with a creamy slaw mix and cotija cheese served on fresh tostones.

HANDHELDS include an appealing variety of sliders, tacos and wraps, featuring everything from chorizo burgers to Mastry’s Blonde Ale grouper sliders.

Pipo’s won the Cuban sandwich competition in Ybor City, amongst other awards, so many times they put them in the Hall of Fame so they could no longer compete. The opportunity to enjoy a combination of Pipo’s cuisine with one of Mastry’s award winning brews is very appealing. La Croisette Restaurant and Bakery. . . Born Again

By Peter Roos La Croisette reopened in early June 2021 at 7401 Gulf Blvd. on the corner of Corey Ave. in St Pete Beach, after a year of rebuilding, almost from the ground up. The new owners, Mickael, Nathalie and their two children are recent arrivals from France. It was Beverly’s La Croisette for the past 20 years, but before that, a photo hanging in the building proves it was a breakfast and lunch place with a French bakery called La Croisette in 1986. Nathalie is the curator of La Croisette Museum.

She got history photos of the building and the family over the years from both Beverly and her mother-in-law. If you have questions or kind comments, by all means, ask for Nathalie.

La Croisette serves both French and American breakfast and lunch daily from 6:30am-1:30pm.

The brand-new venue features both indoor and outdoor service. Breakfast is served all day, including real French Croissants and pastries, a variety of eggs any way you like, from a dozen 32

omelets to a dozen benedicts, plus toast, French or conventional, Belgian waffles, frittatas, biscuits and gravy, hash and eggs and what many reviewers describe as “home fries to die for.” The “star” of the breakfast menu, according to Nathalie, “are the croissant sandwiches.”

If posts online are reasonable measures of La Croisette’s success so far, I’d say they are SUPERSTARS! Hundreds of recent 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp, along with some delicious looking food photos are evidence that La Croisette’s menu is a hit with customers from everywhere.

by Mickael in a special oven. These fresh-baked flaky pastries are offered a dozen ways including a veggie, a meat lover, with fried chicken or with cream cheese, capers and lox and served with a side of those home fries. Lunch is served weekdays from 11:30am-1:30pm.

Now that the craziness of the height of season is behind us for a little while, plan to check out this new gem. Many of the reviews mention the great food, but also the friendly staff, some of whom you will recognize from Beverly’s if you dined there in the past.

There are a dozen wraps and sandwiches and a half dozen salads $10-12.There is also a French bakery that sells out daily by 2pm and a list of sides you could make a meal out of.

While seating ends daily at 1:30pm, pastries are sometimes available until 2pm.

Next time you are thinking of going to the Corey area for breakfast, aim for La Croisette. You will not be disappointed.

What would we do without our growers? John and his son Matt grow herbs year-round in Plant City and bring them to the Corey Ave. Market every Sunday! Growing up in Massachusetts Matt knew that sunshine was where he wanted to be year-round.

Concrete Issues floors and other structural elements to provide tensile strength the concrete would otherwise lack. If the Pantheon had rebar, it would probably be in ruins today, like so many other Roman wonders – not taken by the hands of men, but by time itself.

Many Americans grew up like I did, marveling at the amazing history of concrete, which goes back to about 1400 BC for the Greeks. The Roman architectural revolution was based on concrete, and to this day the Pantheon is the world’s largest unreinforced dome, relying totally on concrete for its strength and longevity. We learned that concrete “sets” even under water, and gets harder and harder, year after year, century after century. Western civilization itself, at least as regards to architecture, is a creature of the history of concrete.

So, losing so many people in the Surfside, Florida, collapse of the 12-story Champlain Tower as a result of concrete failure came as a great shock to many.

I’ve lived in a number of condominiums over the years, from the 100-story John Hancock building in Chicago, to five stories over parking at Silver Sands condominium in St. Pete Beach, and several in between.

I’ve served on the boards of condos, and various committees, so I learned all about concrete damage and restoration, as have many Floridians, primarily in the context of balcony issues.

There are several basic differences between the Pantheon and the modern American residential condominium. While the exact contents of the cement itself is quite different, that’s not really the issue.

What absolutely IS the major issue is the use of rebar, a steel product that is universally placed in concrete walls,

The reason rebar is so problematical is that concrete (unless carefully sealed) is porous.

Water penetrates the surface, and travels through concrete over time. If a building is on the ocean (or Gulf of Mexico), there is a substantial amount of salt in the air, and that ends up in the rainwater. Together with steel rebar, they create rust. The problem is, rust expands as it forms, and the stress it creates inside a concrete slab causes cracking and fractures. And that brings down buildings.

Engineers know all about this stuff, and have for a long, long time. Surfside condo officers and directors received engineering reports all about it, but they were delayed by the millions of dollars in cost to address the issues facing them. And when issues aren’t faced, disaster results.

Dark Mountains transports the viewer to remote, high-altitude environments, brimming with awe and anxiety. The museum holds a large art collection created by survivors, children and grandchildren of survivors, and those who may not have a direct connection to the Holocaust but have been moved to confront the subject in their art. A new exhibit from this collection is Her Response: Women Artists from the Permanent Collection.

The exhibit explores the many aspects of the Holocaust, observing the way art goes beyond traditional and academic examinations of the event. Artists include Daisy Brand, Joyce Lyons, Kitty Klaidman, Pearl Hirshfield, and Toby Knobel Fluek. On display through Dec. 26.

These artistic works, later collectively termed Doulton Lambeth ware, were the genesis of a new, uniquely British ceramic style. These sturdy yet beautiful pieces of stoneware fascinated British society. Like the long artistic tradition of British landscape, rural genre scenes, and sporting imagery, Doulton Lambeth ware’s designs are tied to the countryside.

CARES Act cares about the arts To help small businesses that suffered from the pandemic, the city of St. Petersburg has developed a new incentive package to support St. Pete’s health, local economy, and cultural landscape. Funding for the St. Pete Small Business Resilience + Retention Incentive Package comes from the city’s Fighting Chance Funds and a portion of CARES Act Funding received by Pinellas County, totaling $2,536,000 in dedicated package funding. On pandemic hiatus in 2020, fans can enjoy the legendary concert series in a new venue at BayCare Ballpark, home to the Clearwater Threshes/ Phillies through 2022 as the City of Clearwater builds Clearwater Jazz Holiday’s new Imagine Clearwater home in Coachman Park. Featuring local favorites like Gloria West and young artists, the festival serves up tunes for every taste: smooth and straight-ahead jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, jam band, folk, Americana, funk, fusion, Latin and more.

Get there when gates open if you want to hang out in Frenchy’s Tiki Pavilion for mixed drinks, beer and wine for guests 21 and over; first-come, first serve. In between acts, buy and get signed CDs and enjoy community booths with cool swag, ethnic food delights, beer and wine vendors. Come for the kettle corn and brats, leave your pets a home and bring your dancing shoes. Blankets permitted, but no chairs, folding or camp chairs allowed.

The COVID Ribbon Memorial was created by photographer and visual artist Cathy Tobias to offer people a tangible and visual way to honor the lives that were lost, to remember, and to mourn loved ones. It consists of colorful ribbons tied, one at a time, onto a strong twine. Each ribbon represents one person who has died in Florida due to this deadly virus. The memorial has more than 37,400 ribbons and spans the length equivalent to three football fields. The memorial has previously been exhibited on the beach at Anna Maria Island and the Morean Art Center in St. Petersburg.

According to The New York Times, two-wheeled adventures took off in 2019-2021. Regular bike sales were up 65% and electric bikes rolled in a 145% increase 2019-2020. Bikes were hard to purchase during the pandemic, and two-wheeled adventures continue to be popular. I got hooked when I heard musician David Byrne had a fold-up ebike he used while on tour to explore neighborhoods.

For older folks 65+ who like to be active, an electric bike is a gift.

For people of any age, the eco-appeal of an electric bike is another draw, sometimes as an alternative to local errands or a daily commute by car.

Rad Power Bikes from Seattle are the most popular, with fat tires perfect for riding rough terrain or the beach or trails where permitted. Fast Company, Time and cycling magazines rank them as one of the best ebikes. I also like the Electric Bike Company’s Model X, assembled in the U.S. and customizable, with little motor noise, Schwalbe Fat Frank tires, aluminum frame and a comfortable saddle and retro hand bar. But they are not cheap, starting at $1299 and up. The best value may be the Aventon Pace 350, starting at $1,099.

Things to consider when buying an e-bike include performance, price, comfort, handling, value, reliability, fun, aesthetics, and overall e-factor; how fast the motor will propel you; and battery life. Good disc brakes and durable wide tires are important. You might want a battery that unlocks from the bike (preventing theft) and can be charged off the bike; also safer for hauling on a bike rack or carrying upstairs. You can attach a bike light instead of an integrated lighting system that is powered by the bike or a rear rack as an optional feature.

Teeth begin to appear around three weeks. They learn how to use the litter box and groom themselves. They still rely on their mother for feedings but will gradually become more independent. Kittens learn how to interact with other animals and people. They can be gently handled for short periods and play sessions with people should increase.

During their first two weeks, kittens mostly sleep.

Although your kitten is still young, it will soon be able to reproduce.

6 to 18 months: Your kitten will grow from teenager to adult during this stage. When your kitten is a year old, switch to adult cat food. It no longer needs the increased calories and nutrients that kitten food provides. Otherwise, your cat may develop a weight problem. Start the switch by mixing cat and kitten food together, gradually decreasing the amount of kitten food. Visit your veterinarian within the first several weeks after your new addition arrives for a checkup and to put kitty on the vaccine schedule to stay healthy.

Cats can become sexually mature as young as six months. Spaying and neutering also reduce your pet’s risk of developing certain types of cancers, including breast and testicular cancer. Spaying or neutering should be scheduled for no later than five months to prevent pregnancy.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

We All Shine On Last night after watching the nine-o’clock news (not recommended) I took McDoodle, my dog, out for a late evening stroll. I couldn’t help but stop and stare at the full moon; it was exquisite. I thought, “Wow, that is stunningly bright–I don’t even need my flashlight.”

Knowing that the moon has no light of its own, other than what it reflects off the sun, I thought, “I am quite literally standing in sun light right now.” What a perfect metaphor for the interconnectedness of all things–even when it isn’t visible to the human eye.

After gazing at the moon for several more moments, I realized humans (and probably animals) have done the same thing for countless millennia–staring at that same mystical light in awe and wonder. In a heartbeat I forgot about the pandemic and the nine-o’clock news and instantly felt a kinship with humankind, animals, the planet, and a universe expanding at the speed of light spanning eternity.

THE TAKEAWAY: In uncertain and challenging times it can be a wise practice to pause and seek to align with something larger than the news of the day to aspire to. The key is Photo Courtesy Earth.com

to remember we are all part of something far greater than ourselves which extends far beyond our capacity to comprehend; something that affirms we are one with the sacred continuum of life–even if we can’t always see it.
