We are thrilled to feature our favorite private school as the cover story this month. Admiral Farragut Academy was the catalyst that drew us to St. Pete Beach when our son, Jordan, reached high school age. Jordan liked the school but did not like living there his freshman year, so we moved close enough for him to be a day student. His four years “at Farragut “taught him how to learn on his own, and he has never stopped. It has been 19 years since we previously featured Admiral Farragut Academy on our cover, at the turn of the millenium when the campuses consolidated.

The new Fine Arts building is just the latest addition to this great school, that now has a large female contingent and serves Pre-K through High School.

The gala Reach For The Stars Event sounds like an occasion not to be missed.

They also have open houses in April for prospective new students. If you have been thinking about a private education for your children or grandchildren, this is a world-class resource, right in the neighborhood.

Thanks to all who responded to the Bus Rapid Transit article in our February issue. The plan is definitely faulty and impactful on many of our lives if we find ourselves on 1st Avenues north and south frequently.

A New Pier for Everyone

The new St. Pete Pier was designed with criteria established by a citizen-led group, and unprecedented community input.

There are so many varied facets to the new Pier, it truly will have “something for everyone.” Whether you want to ride your bike along the waterfront, fish on the deck at the Pier Head, take your kids or grandkids to the playground, learn about the Tampa Bay estuary or simply enjoy the views, the Pier will offer a myriad of activities.

This is not your grandmother’s Pier. This Pier will have ride-share bikes, an electric tram, solar covered parking to provide power to the Pier, and electric vehicle charging stations. There are new breakwaters to help calm occasional rough seas, protect sea grasses, and expand Spa Beach.

This Pier will be higher than the previous one, designed for sea level rise with buildings designed to withstand significant storm events. LED lights will illuminate the Pier at night.

The Discovery Center will offer environmental education to all visitors. The concrete from the old Pier has been repurposed to shore up the bulkhead around Albert Whitted Airport.

All major tenants have been selected: • TEAK, Inc. will offer an upscale restaurant (Teak) a rooftop bar (Teaki) and a cafe (Driftwood Cafe) • Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grille will be located on the south side of the Pier Approach. The restaurant’s name and theme are based on the novels by New York Times bestselling author Randy Wayne White.

• United Park Services (UPS) will operate the Pavilion Cafe, which will offer “grab and go” food items as well as other, healthy, interesting and traditional food selections. UPS will also operate the Bait Shop at the Pier Head.

• Tampa Bay Watch will operate the Discovery Center, mid-way out to the Pier Head. They will offer dynamic interactive exhibits that will educate the public and showcase the Tampa Bay estuary, as well as classroom space for school field trips and summer camp programs. They will also provide management services for the center as an event venue for corporate meetings and special events.

Only certified tax-exempt non-profit organizations, government entities requesting funds for public purposes, or schools and colleges qualify. Decisions announced by April 27.

Special consideration will be given to groups that are able to help promote and provide volunteers for the GMC events that raise the funds making these grants possible.

“Gecko World” events with funds earmarked each year for community giving include “Gecko Crawl,” “Gecko Ball” and the GeckoFest street festival. The events grow in size and popularity every year and each requires a large promotional effort and a large number of volunteers. Grant amounts will be determined and funds distributed to grantees after these GMC events have concluded for 2019.

The Chalk-Lit Fair, a NEW SPB event is Saturday, March 30.

This is a new FREE family event that celebrates the art community with a twist! Register to participate in the book-themed

The scheduled tennis match was cancelled and we are challenging all level players to come out and hit with the Lady Titans - This will be followed by dinner and the silent auction preview. There will also be a Foot Golf Tournament for juniors, men & women on Friday, March 8, with a shotgun start at 4:30 pm. The fee for the Foot Golf Tournament is $10 / person or $25 per family of four.

The Greater Treasure Island Club (TGTIC) - The vision is a community of residents working together to improve & preserve the distinctive character of Treasure Island. A volunteer organization of residents dedicated to capitalizing on opportunities and managing challenges, with the goal of leaving a more beautiful and more sustainable Treasure Island to future generations.

While modern services such as Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com, along with smart phone apps and other technical innovations, somewhat level the field in terms of access to information, properties themselves vary hugely from one to another, no two locations are truly equivalent, and financing complications exert an exaggerated influence on transactions. Those and many other factors will always make the property market inefficient.

Realtors are extremely hard-working people who compete every day for the attention of buyers and sellers, and must diligently prepare for the task by continuously building their knowledge and professional skills in order to be most valuable to the public in need of assistance.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the St. Pete Beach Library is facing vital major repairs including a new roof and a new air conditioning / heating system, among other key fixes.

The City Commission is currently considering RFQs (Requests for Qualifications) from major contractors. The Commission will make a recommendation to the Budget Committee to include key funding in the upcoming fiscal 2020 budget that could easily exceed $1.5 million.

Four years ago the Commission had approved construction of a new Library, selected an architect and had planned to include about $2 million in the budget.

Unfortunately an over-age and overworked sanitary sewer and stormwater system was a more urgent matter and those funds went toward long overdue repairs, sidetracking a new library.

Your Library now serves more than 12,700 cardholders from SPB and surrounding towns, and last year counted more than 83,800 individual visits.

The library was built in 1969 and opened to the public before man landed on the moon. Obviously there are some structural issues with any building of this age, including the roof, HVAC components, water intrusion through the walls and windows.

There are also internal needs to be addressed such as electrical outlets and lighting, outdated receptacles throughout the library that were once used for central vacuuming.

The tile in the kitchen is original and there’s very inadequate storage space. The carpet was installed in 1992 and a close estimate says that 2.5 million people have walked on that carpet in that time — the same carpet toddlers sit on for story time and to read their books.

As the hurricane season approaches, we are in danger of not only losing print materials but further damaging an already ancient structure.

This is why it’s essential that every reader of Paradise News who uses the Library contact your City Commissioner – if you live in St. Pete Beach, or Mayor Al Johnson if you are a nearby town Library card-holder – emails available online at www.stpetebeach.org.

Let them know what your St. Pete Beach Library means to you and your family, and urge them to support the vital repairs and have the Budget Committee include the anticipated $1.5 million plus in the Fiscal Year 2020 Budget.

It’s been more than decade since Paradise NEWS introduced you to Odise’ Armata, an enterprising young man who had opened the first air-conditioned produce shop in St. Pete Beach.

One of the most industrious young entrepreneurs in our readership area, Odise’ (O-dis-say) added a Boars Head Deli with Gyro Sandwiches, Subs, Platters and Salads and catering trays of veggies, salads and Mediterranean specialties as his produce shop grew. Odise’s wife Mirela, who used to help him when she first arrived from Albania, opened Mirela’s Talent Salon next door.During the summer of 2018, Odise’ expanded the kitchen, adding a grille, oven and a commercial exhaust hood. Where he used to display most of his produce, he added a few more seats and tables. You can still get a fresh tomato, lettuce or onions to go, along with a pint of olives, Feta cheese and a pound of Boars Head to go at the best prices in town, but it is time to be thinking about this spot more as a restaurant than a produce shop or deli.

The expanded kitchen allows a wider variety of hot dishes to be offered including homemade Greek specialties like Pastitsio, Moussaka, Shish Kebob & Stuffed Peppers, even a variety of vegetarian items like homemade Falafel, Spinach Pie and others, that can be heated and enjoyed in the dining room or packaged to go. From 4 until 7 pm, these entrees and others including Gyro Platter, Chicken w/Vegetables & Mediterranean Appetizer Platter are offered as an early dinner option with salad and bread for around $11.50.

Gulfport has been holding a First Friday and Second Saturday Artwalk for years. It’s the same location as the Tuesday Market, but you’ll find different offerings with additional jewelry, arts and crafts.

announces first-ever business partnership — with the

historic peninsula Inn Last week, the Historic Peninsula Inn joined GHS as a lifetime business member, also called a “Square Mullet Sympathizer.” The Inn’s owner, Veronica Champion, said the partnership was one she wanted to cement because of the Inn’s rich local history.

“The Historic Peninsula Inn has a strong history,” Champion said ‘and, as innkeepers, we want let our guests in on Gulfport’s unusual history.

Partnering with the historical society simply makes sense.”

The Gulfport Merchants Chamber agreed.

The exhibit will remain on display to the public — and, of course, to Historic Peninsula Inn guests — indefinitely.

Our Personal Connection with Admiral Farragut Academy: When Renee and I discovered the school in 1986, it was a militaryoriented boys school with a strong connection to the Navy. The St. Pete location was then the second campus for Farragut with the original campus in Toms River, New Jersey. The new location was an impressive historic site, which was previously the Jungle Country Club & Hotel built by Walter Fuller with reputed connections to Al Capone. We enrolled our only child Jordan there as a boarding student in his high school freshman year while we lived in Brandon, on the other side of Tampa. The next summer we moved to St. Pete Beach so Jordan could continue as a day student. It was a fine school then and it has come a long way since.

By the time Jordan graduated in 1990, there were a handful of girls in his graduating class, and females now make up a significant part of the student body. The faculty focus on developing the whole child and are involved in each student’s life in and out of class. Students are local and international with ESL classes offered to non-English speakers.

Farragut also offers a variety of clubs, 14 competitive sports, sailing, weekend trips, and other extracurricular activities. The St. Petersburg location took center stage around the turn of the millennium when the New Jersey campus closed.

Trio of New City Managers Look Ahead in Treasure Island, Madeira Beach & St. Pete Beach

The barrier island towns of Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and St. Pete Beach have each hired new City Managers in the past year and a half. How is it working out?

In the past 17 months since November 2017, the barrier island towns of Treasure Island, Madeira Beach and St. Pete Beach have each hired new City Managers. It is a tedious process of hiring consultants, reviewing resumes, making short lists, engaging the community, interviewing top candidates and negotiating with top contenders.

Brumback came with a strong track record for economic development and revitalization, both traits that appealed to City Commissioners.

Brumback earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Virginia Military Institute and a master’s degree in international relations from Boston University

Each one brings a solid professional background, a unique mix of management skills, and an optimistic outlook for the future for their respective communities.

Brumback’s initial contract went into effect Dec. 18, 2017, and continues through Dec. 18, 2020. He will earn $135,000 per year and will receive a $5,000 increase after six months, upon a successful review.

Brumback will be responsible for his own automobile and insurance expenses but will receive an annual automobile allowance of $4,800.

In addition, the city will pay 8% of his base salary annually ($10,800) toward a 401a plan and he will contribute another 5% ($6,750).

The city will also pay 7% of his annual salary ($9,450) to a Section 457 Retirement Plan.

Garry Brumback joined Treasure Island in late 2017, Jonathan Evans took over in Madeira Beach in February 2018, and Alex Rey comes to St. Pete Beach April 1.

The Treasure Island City Commissioners selected Garry Brumback as the new city manager with a Nov. 3, 2017, announcement. He replaced Reid Silverboard, who retired after 10 years in that post in May.

Brumback, then 60, was town manager of Southington, CT, for seven years, and began his new position before year-end. Southington was the third community Brumback had worked for as a manager, a career he entered after retiring as a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. Prior to Southington, he was City Manager for three years in Baytown, TX, and Assistant City Manager in Clearwater where he worked for eight years.

Since taking on the post, Brumback has shown a hands-on approach to all city situations. As an example, he stated that he was very proud about the way the city’s employees pooled together to clean up the mess left behind by Hurricane IRMA.

“Employees worked their fingers to the bone using every bit of available resources,” he told Paradise News. “They helped one another with manpower and equipment to return life to normal after such a large event. And we were forced to do all the cleanup on our own due to the extraordinary circumstances of 2017. We don’t have plans to change our disaster abatement program.”

I am humbled by the opportunity to serve in this capacity, and I appreciate both the challenges we have endured and the successes we have achieved.”

The City Commission of Madeira Beach announced that Jonathan Evans, recently City Manager of Riviera Beach, had accepted the post of City Manager on Jan. 31, 2018. His starting salary was $145,000 a year, as he requested.

“We are delighted to bring Mr. Evans to our City,” said Mayor Maggi Black.

“We believe his experience will be a tremendous benefit to our community and we cannot wait to start working with him.

I’m excited to start moving forward under his leadership.”

Mr. Evans possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration – both from the University of Central Florida – and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a Human Resources concentration from Saint Leo University.

Prior to Riviera Beach, Evans was Assistant County Administrator for Sarasota County, and has experience in Pinellas County as the Assistant City Manager and Public Information Officer for the City of Largo.

In accepting the position, Evans said, in part, “The premise of this email is to express my enthusiasm and excitement concerning the opportunity in Madeira Beach. I want you to know that I am committed to working with each and every one of you to do what is absolutely necessary to move this organization forward. I understand that there are some challenges that lie ahead, but through genuine, open and honest relationships, we will be able to accomplish any task we set forth to accomplish.

“Your support, guidance and vision for our community will be critical as we take the necessary steps to promote tourism, smart growth and preservation and protection of our most precious natural amenities.

We are proud of the progress we have made to promote good governance and maintaining transparency at the forefront with everything we do.”

“I’m excited to meet our community stakeholders, staff and entrepreneurs, to understand their ideologies and perspectives on this great city.

Recognizing his excellent performance, the City Commission gave him a “superior” rating on his first annual evaluation, and voted unanimously to give Evans a 4% raise on his job anniversary this past February to $150,800.

Speaking for the Commission, Vice Mayor Deby Weinstein said Evans had inherited “some tough problems and had worked and shown intelligence and potential with various groups, exceeding anything I have seen here in the past 40 years.”

In a special Feb. 6 meeting, the SPB City Commission hired Alejandro “Alex” Rey as new City Manager, succeeding Wayne Saunders who retired after four years in the post. Rey’s initial two-year contract includes a $175,000 annual salary, $5,000 in moving expenses, a $500 monthly car allowance, and a cell phone. Benefits include family health insurance and a retirement contribution equal to 15% of his salary.

In accepting the position, Rey said, “I am grateful to the Mayor and City Commission for placing their trust me in me. St. Pete Beach is a vibrant and welcoming community, and my wife Kathie and I look forward to meeting our future neighbors and enjoying the incredible sunsets. I am looking forward to joining the group of high-performing and dedicated employees; led by a committed Mayor and Commission who work closely together for the benefit of the community.

“As the longtime manager of the Town of Miami Lakes, which is also a picturesque, close-knit community near a large metropolitan area, it is a wonderful opportunity to lead a municipality that has met the challenges of maintaining its own identity.

Rey joins SPB from the Miami Lakes where he was Town Manager from Oct. 2002-Aug. 2008 and from Sept. 2010 to current. In that inter period he was Building Director for the City of Miami Beach from Sept, 2008 to Aug. 2010; Assistant Director - Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 1997 to 2002 for Miami-Dade County, with the OMB responsible for preparing the annual $5 billion operating and capital budgets as well as providing managerial and technical support to the County Manager.

He was with Miami-Dade Transit Agency from 1983 to 1997, first as Management Productivity Analyst III (Project Leader), then Manager, Management Services, responsible for performing productivity studies and operational audits; evaluating the agency’s performance; evaluating special projects and developing a comprehensive reporting system, and the last five years as Assistant Director for Administration, responsible for policy development, supervision and direction of issues relating to budgeting, grants management, financial planning, audits, revenue collection, information services, procurement and contracts, materials distribution, warranty, joint development, leasing activities, advertising contracts, labor relations, training, and employee relations. It was the 15th largest transit agency in the U.S. with an annual operating budget of over $200 million per year and 2,600 employees.

In his job application to the City, Rey noted, “During my career, I have worked with large, medium and small governmental entities with various levels of complexity. My most recent experience is with the town of Miami Lakes, which has 33,000 residents. I am known for being a dynamic, diligent leader, eager to get results and improve an organization. Even though I have been in government for 35 years, I do not let bureaucracy get in the way of results.”

“I have extensive labor relations and contract negotiation experience dating back to my service with the Miami-Dade Transit Agency where I dealt with the Transportation Workers Union and General Services Administration Union. While I was at the City of Miami Beach, I was assigned to be a lead negotiator for contract renewals with the Police Benevolent Assn. and International Assn. of Firefighters.

“I have also been involved in negotiating Public Private Partnerships – specifically the joint development agreement negotiated for Dadeland North and Dadeland South on behalf of the Transit Agency, with the developers for a hotel, parking garage, and a vertical mall.

“My financial and budgetary experiences are some of my strongest traits.

I have worked for many years in budget related positions, including Assistant Director in the County Budget Office, serving on the County Managers Finance Committee to review and approve all financial transactions, and presenting 10 budgets to the town of Miami Lakes Council.

During the contract negotiations in Miami Beach, pension cost was a key item and I quickly gained an understanding of the pension financial structure. I have also been directly involved in securing grants in the early part of my career and managing the grant process in the most recent years.

“I believe that the Commission here is responsible for setting the goals and objectives of the City. Once objectives have been set by the Commission, the Manager needs to lead your staff to the successful achievement of those goals. I believe that it is my responsibility to develop staff and make the most of their expertise, and while providing direction and guidance, let them run with their projects and ideas.

I will make each staff member perform to the best of their abilities, feel included, and create a work environment where they feel valued and respected.”

Looking ahead, Rey told Paradise News, “Over my first year, I will concentrate on ensuring that all of the infrastructure improvements will continue on schedule and try to find new funding alternatives.

Once we have the infrastructure in place we need to ensure that we get high-quality redevelopment in the commercial areas of St. Pete Beach.” PN

The Ride of Your Life Doesn’t Start Somewhere Down the Road

Are you putting your life on hold and waiting for the “right time” to enjoy it?

One of my most vivid memories as a kid growing up in the 1950s pertains to the sofa in the family room of our home. The reason I remember this particular sofa so well is that my mom covered it with a custom-fitted, clear piece of vinyl plastic, just like so many people did in that era. In the summertime I would perspire profusely and whenever I sat on the sofa in shorts and a shirt my skin would stick to the plastic as if it was glued there—it was torture each time I would move or get up from the sofa.

My mom’s logic was that this was an expensive sofa so she was preserving it for greater longevity and enjoyment somewhere down the road and for years to come.

Longevity maybe—enjoyment, umm, not so much. I don’t know where that sofa eventually ended up but I am quite sure some of my hide is still firmly adhered to it.

That sofa experience serves as a perfect metaphor for how many of us live our lives. Perhaps it’s just human nature to put off fully enjoying the moment and whatever it entails until we arrive at that etheric place called “somewhere down the road” where and when the time will be more appropriate to enjoy the experience. I am not talking about spending money we don’t have or doing perilous and unintelligent things with our possessions and/or our bodies. I am talking about living in the richness that each day offers in a manner that

allows us to experience the blessing of being alive today rather than postponing it until further notice somewhere down the road. The reality check for me is this: the older I grow, the more I know this moment is as good as it gets because it’s the only moment I have. So why not live in it as deeply and richly as I can?

While this topic is not just about the wisdom with which we use our financial resources, I’ve known more than one person who postponed enjoying the fruits of his labor, squirreling away every penny he earned, saving it for a rainy day. This is not an indictment of saving wisely— it’s an indictment of saving fearfully in a manner that robs us of what joy the moment might bring if we only allow ourselves to be open to it.

Recently, I saw a 40-foot motorhome with a fancy boat in tow being driven down the freeway. A bumper sticker on it said, “We’re spending our kids’ inheritance NOW and enjoying every dime of it!” As I drove by I noticed that the driver was not an elderly man who had “paid his dues” (which I expected to see), but a much younger man than me. I thought to myself, why not—you have earned it; if you can afford it, you should enjoy it while you have the opportunity to. At first this mindset can appear self-serving and perhaps a bit stingy, but taken in proper context, it is not that at all; it’s about being wise enough to know what you are worthy of and embracing it while you can. For some it may be about no longer postponing the motorhome experience or taking the trip of a lifetime until

“someday” arrives. For others it may be about no longer postponing joining that hiking club, planting that garden, or enrolling in that long desired art, dance, fitness, or computer class until such time when it is more convenient or practical. Seldom does that time ever show up.

From a spiritual perspective, we know that life is eternal — and that is a profoundly important thing to remember.

However, equally important we know we exist on a timeline — our life has an expiration date.

It’s a gift meant to be fully used before we leave the planet rather than squandered by living small.

In short, don’t return to your Maker less than fully “used up.”

That’s like paying for a full day pass at Disneyland and then leaving the park before you get to all the rides. You have already paid the admission price for the ride called life, so be sure to get your money’s worth before you leave.

What might you be postponing until that etheric destination called “somewhere down the road”? Perhaps now is the time to stop thinking and start doing.

Of course, that will always be the case because now is all there is and now is all you have.

How are you spending your “now”? At the end of your journey on this planet, whenever that day comes, may you be able to say, “Wow! What a ride!”

Tyler Henry is the star of E! Entertainment’s hit television show, Hollywood Medium, and for the first time audiences will be treated to his new live show entitled “Life Lessons I’ve Learned From The Departed” at Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater Wednesday May 29th @7:30 pm.

This exclusive show will feature Tyler discussing his unique gift and how it affects his everyday life, and also includes a multi-media video presentation and lecture PLUS live readings and audience Q&A. Tyler Henry has quickly become perhaps the most soughtafter clairvoyant medium both in the United States and around the world. Through his show, Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, broadcast worldwide on E!, Tyler demonstrates how he uses his unique gift of communicating with the other side to bring comfort, closure, and hope to his clients.

Tyler’s goal has always been to aid in the grief process and provide validation and closure through his one-on-one private readings, his TV show, his book, and now his live shows.

Tyler began receiving intuitive mental images when he was only 10 years old with the foretelling of his grandmother’s death. As he continued cultivating his gift, sometimes even by “reading” his classmates, word began to spread around his small California hometown. As a teenager in Hanford, Tyler began thinking of a way to incorporate his gift into a career. He graduated high school early and began taking college classes to become a hospice nurse as he believed his calling was to help people comfortably transition to the other side. Those eye-popping murals may decorate just about every flat surface in town, but we’re also quickly becoming known as “The Glass Coast,” a worldwide destination for glass enthusiasts.

St. Petersburg boasts amazing glass collections including Imagine Museum, Morean Arts Center Featuring the Chihuly Collection, and The Dalí Museum, and is also home to many galleries and studios including many that host pop-up exhibitions, events and demos including Zen Glass Studio & Gallery, and Duncan Mclellan Gallery.

Visit St. Pete is sponsoring the 48th Annual Glass Arts Society (GAS) Conference, “Charting a Course: Visions in Glass,” March 28-30. The conference will include events, award ceremonies, featured exhibitions by students and members of GAS, artist demos, panels, lectures and more featuring over 76 glass artists who specialize in coldworking, hot glass and flameworking.

There is also a Collectors Tour and visit to Sarasota’s Ringling Museum for an additional fee. Additional community partners will be hosting pop-up exhibitions, satellite events and demos throughout the area.

Membership in GAS, which ranges from $40 for students to $1000 for benefactors, is required to register. Conference fees range from $61 to $385 depending on membership status.

Preserve the ‘Burg’s 2019 Preservation Awards Celebration will be held 6:30 – 8:30 PM March 19 at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, one of the city’s locally designated landmarks, dating to 1898. It will be an evening with art, music, food and drink, honoring the homeowners, business owners, and organizations whose dedicated work keeps St. Pete special. Great American Cleanup Saturday, March 16, 9 – noon Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to participate in the Great American Cleanup, in partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful. This cleanup is sponsored by SeaWorld Busch Gardens Conservation Fund and supported by city of St. Petersburg.

The Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program, which takes place annually in an estimated 20,000 communities nationwide. This is a land-based cleanup, so we are looking for volunteers to walk the sites to pick up trash to prevent marine debris. Helping hands are needed at Bartlett Park, 647 22nd Ave S., St. Petersburg 33705 and Grandview Park, 3734 E 6th St, St. Petersburg 33701. We could also use a maximum of 8 kayakers at Grandview Park.

The Tricolored Heron can be seen in the quiet shallow waters of Tampa Bay. Strikingly slender, with long bill, neck, and legs, it is often seen wading belly-deep in the bay. Although it is solitary in its feeding, it is sociable in nesting, often in very large colonies with various other herons and egrets. This bird is formerly known as the Louisiana Heron.

March 12, 13, or 14, 9am – noon This spring break, come join the education department on an eco-tour throughout the Tampa Bay estuary. After a quick estuary introduction and kayak briefing, trained staff will take you on the water in tandem kayaks to see the estuary from a whole new perspective!

Kayak the mangrove tunnel and get the chance to see the unique plants and animals that call Tampa Bay their home.

Eco-tours are offered March 12, 13, and 14 from 9am – noon.

Dwarf Seahorses live in the shallow seagrass beds of Tampa Bay. They use their tails to anchor themselves to the seagrass as seen in the above picture. Adults only grow to about an inch tall. They have complex social behaviors, usually mating for life. Male seahorses carry the babies and give live birth.

Unfortunately, seagrass habitat has been damaged from pollution, boats and changing ocean conditions causing the populations of these little seahorses to decline.

INSHORE- Warmer weather is encouraging the Snook to swim back into the passes. The white bait showed up to get chased by Mackerel and the Pompano as Sheepshead slows a bit.

Some Mackerel were caught at the Skyway Bridge in mid-February, they should be in the pass soon if the early warming trend continues.

Pompano action has picked up, using live shrimp. Sheepshead are still biting well for now around the pass. Use fiddler crabs for bait.

NEAR SHORE - Sheepshead and Hogfish are biting well and the grey snapper bite is picking up and filling the gaps. All areas improved on the backside of that recent full moon. Typically, the full moon can make the daytime fishing a bit slow near shore during the peak days of the moonlight allowing the fish to feed 24 hours a day instead of limiting their feeding to the daytime.

We are looking forward to the return of Mackerel and Kingfish to the near shore waters.

OFFSHORE – We had a great 44-hour full moon trip mid-February.

Red Grouper Mangrove, Yellowtail and Vermillion Snapper, Porgies and a few Cobia and even a Kingfish were all brought back to the dock! The tuna were absent but we saw a great push of cobia twice during the trip, which made up for the lack of tuna. The weather was perfect during this trip with warm temps and nearly flat, calm conditions. The Vermillion Snapper up huge (in the 2 - 3lb range) with some 5 - 7lb Mangrove Snapper coming up too. The big mangrove snapper love to eat the live pinfish, but anglers have to wait for the hard pull when the Mangrove Snapper swallows the pinfish.

Plus, we often see dolphins, seabirds and sometimes even sea turtles on the ride out and back.

Ben has also written “The Leper Spy” and his latest non-fiction work “The Man Who Walked Backward”. Montgomery spent most of his 20-year newspaper career as an enterprise reporter for The Tampa Bay Times.

In 2010 he was a finalist in the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting and won the Dart Award and Casey Medal for a series called “For Their Own Good,” about abuse at Florida’s oldest reform school.

Ben’s recent non-fiction work “The Man Who Walked Backwards” is subtitled “An American Dreamer’s Search for Meaning in the Great Depression.”
