The US formally rejoined the Paris Agreement, just over four years after Donald Trump declared his intention to abandon it. “It’s an important first step,” writes Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune. “But to meet the agreement’s goal of preventing climate catastrophe, the Biden administration will have to take ambitious climate action here at home, and inspire and enable other countries to do the same.”

Tampa International Airport adds new service– Frontier crew base Frontier Airlines announced it’s establishing a new crew base at Tampa International Airport (TPA) opening this May. Approximately 250 flight attendants and 140 pilots will be based in TPA. Silver Airways has announced nonstop service to four destinations–Charleston, SC; Columbia, SC; Greenville-Spartanburg, SC (March 21); and Savannah, GA (April 2). JetBlue launched new nonstop service to Raleigh-Durham, NC, four times weekly.

Delta Airlines continues blocking middle seats As the only carrier in the US still blocking middle seats, Delta Airlines announced this week it will continue blocking middle seats and limit capacity on all flights departing through April 30.

Allegiant announced a new nonstop route to St. Pete/Clearwater International Airport (PIE) from Little Rock, Ark., beginning May 27. The new seasonal nonstop service will operate twice weekly and is the 53rd non-stop Allegiant route into PIE. PIE also reported its January passenger traffic being down 41% with a total of 96,645 passengers.

PSTA unveils new electric buses in St. Petersburg Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) introduced 4 new electric buses to its fleet to

kick off February 2021. About half of PSTA’s fleet is now electric or hybrid.

PSTA hopes to eliminate all diesel buses from its fleet within the next decade.

I remember when we had to demonstrate to get the board to even consider electric instead of diesel.

Their six battery-powered electric buses produce zero emissions. Each electric bus is powered by a rechargeable, environmentally-friendly battery averaging 180 miles or about 14 hours of operating time on a single charge. PSTA will save about $20,000 a year in diesel fuel costs with each electric bus, $240,000/bus over 12 years.

ST. PETERSBURG Rainwater Rebate Program Rebates up to $300 are available to St. Petersburg’s utility customers when they install rainwater catchment devices such as rain barrels, rain totes or rain gardens.

To qualify you must: 1. Be a St. Petersburg storm water utility customer in good standing (no pending payments over 30 days late).

2. Obtain and submit an application signed by the property owner or representative designated by the property owner.

3. Provide required documents for verification.

4. Meet additional requirements of the specific rebate device, as detailed in the Program Guidelines.

So, Just What’s In that Listing Contract?

Many sophisticated people hire attorneys to review both listing contracts and purchase and sale agreements before they sign them (and often prefer to have attorneys close the transaction as well). Other people seem perfectly comfortable signing these multipage documents without even reading them through themselves! They are often told they are “standard” agreements and seem to assume that they are therefore “safe.”

First of all, there is no such thing as a truly “standard” contract for real estate sales or, especially, listings. Although the Florida Association of Realtors® (now known simply as “Florida Realtors® ”) have their own basic forms, many brokerage companies write their own contracts, with considerable “creative drafting.”

Real estate lawyers always warn that there are many problems that can’t be fully remedied after the agreements have been executed.

So, starting with listing contracts, just what is in those agreements that can come back and hurt the owner?

A listing is a service contract between a property owner and a real estate broker by which that firm is engaged to give their best efforts to find a buyer ready, willing and able to purchase a property on the terms offered (or other terms the seller may ultimately accept).

Most problems in listing agreements are in four different areas: 1. Many listings provide for binding arbitration in the case of a disagreement between you and your broker. The problem with arbitration is the concern that they may

favor the businesses that hire them.

In addition, if you disagree with the arbitrator’s ruling, there is no appeal.

2. Listing contracts often include language that would, under certain circumstances, leave you liable to a pay full commission even if there is no closing. Most sellers would never expect such an outcome.

3. In the event that the seller changes his mind about selling, or just doesn’t think the broker is doing an adequate job, there are often very tough conditions attached to cancellation, again a situation that most sellers would not expect.

4. Some listing agreements also provide that the broker can transfer the listing to another broker should they desire. It seems to me like they should ask you, the seller, for permission if they want to do that.

In reviewing listing contracts, I normally strike those terms, or at least negotiate a more acceptable form of them.

The ambitious, forward-looking StPete2050

visioning initiative is expected to be presented to the full

City Council at an upcoming March 18 or April 1 meeting as a Report Item on the agenda.

StPete2050 builds upon the city’s rich planning history, dating nearly 100 years ago to 1923 when the country’s preeminent planner, John Nolen, was retained to develop a city plan. Nolen was an advocate for designing with nature and his plans reinforced the importance of parks, civic buildings and wide boulevards.

He completed St. Petersburg Today, St. Petersburg Tomorrow, Florida’s first comprehensive city plan. It called for integrating development with natural features and landscapes. The forward-looking plan was opposed by the Evening Independent newspaper and developers and was never adopted.

Many of St. Pete’s character-defining features derive from his early planning efforts. Jump forward 20 years to 1943 when the Bartholomew Plan is adopted, following an era of municipal debt from the Great Depression. The plan assumed a future population that would stabilize at 120,000 in 1960 (by 1960 the actual population exceeded 180,000).

Rampant growth and water resource issues led to building moratoriums and the adoption of the 1974 conceptual plan. It incorporated a number of planning principles from the Nolen plan. In 1975 a state planning act passed and St. Pete subsequently adopted the 1977 Land Use Plan.

In 1989, in accord with the requirements of the state’s 1985 Local Government Comprehensive Planning Act the city adopted its Growth Management Plan.

In 2002, St. Pete adopted Vision 2020, setting the stage for comprehensive plan and land development regulation updates.

StPete2050 also builds upon and will replace the prior visioning process that led to the Vision 2020 Plan.

ENTHUSIASTIC KICKOFF Mayor Rick Kriseman told Paradise News earlier (February 2021 issue), “In 2019, the city embarked upon StPete2050. It’s a planning and ‘visioning’ process organized around 10 priority community themes. City council is expected to adopt the plan in early 2021. While commenting on the planning process is not the most exciting form of civic engagement, doing so is vitally important to future city historic preservation efforts.”

About 300 people used markers, maps, labels and their imaginations to begin creating a vision for what St. Petersburg will be like 30 years from now. The packed house at the James Museum Nov. 8, 2019, was the inaugural public meeting, and the start of a year-long process, for StPete2050, a citywide conversation about the future of St. Petersburg.

“This is a generational opportunity,” Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin said. “It’s your opportunity to chart our city’s course, to think about things like sustainability, health and wellness, energy, mobility, housing, education, equity, diversity, our community’s character, what will make sure we will always be a values-driven city, and our economy. It’s all up for discussion.”

“The city followed a similar process two decades ago, when it created Vision 2020,” said Elizabeth Abernethy, planning and development services director. “There have been a lot of changes since 2020, including about an 8 percent gain in population, an increase in household income, a drop in the poverty rate, and new home construction citywide, including double the number of homes downtown. There also are challenges that weren’t top of mind 20 years ago, such as attainable housing, sustainability and resiliency, aging infrastructure and community health.”

“Unlike Vision 2020, there are no designated steering committee leaders for the current planning process,” Tomalin continued. “Each of you is steering. Each of you has your hands on the wheel.”

At the meeting there were 30 tables with 10 chairs each.

Groups at each table were encouraged to talk about what they saw as the city’s strengths and opportunities, and to use the markers, labels and maps at each table to document their conversations.

This enthusiastic launch was followed by three community surveys, with local residents and business people encouraged to respond with their thoughts and ideas for the StPete2050 initiative. At press time, city staff was working diligently on edits to the 2050 report to respond to feedback received from the surveys and the Jan. 28 City Council meeting.

DIRECTOR ABERNETHY NOTES Elizabeth Abernethy, city director of planning and development service, told Paradise News, “My team is responsible for the final edit that is the result of comments at the Jan. 28 council meeting. It is mainly focused on clarifying language with no real substantive changes and will also include results from the most recent community survey.

“We’re anxious and excited to move forward with our Planning Department’s next step that is to update the city’s Comprehensive Plan from the Vision 2020 initiative. We’ll also be updating the Land Development Codes based on last year’s feedback.

“We’ll begin a series of community workshops starting this spring focused on the 10 community themes used to coordinate and guide development in appropriate areas of the city. This is in preparation to coming back to City Council on July 29 with updates to the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Codes.

“Those community themes included Arts and Culture; Shared Economic Prosperity; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Sustainability and Resilience; Education; Transportation and

Mobility; Growth and Community; Character; Attainable Housing; Healthy Communities; Parks, Recreation, and Open Space.

Although not identified as a theme, historic preservation is one of the goals within the theme, ‘growth and community character’.

“Community outreach, much broader than that for our Vision 2020 process, had almost 8,000 points of contact. Included were 45 events, including non-traditional outreach sites that reached 2,870 residents; 635 unique emails with 486 comments on the StPete2050.com web page; over 4,000 responses to three online surveys; and 450 attendees at six meetings for two Community Workshop Series. Meetings included city officials’ introductions, Data presentations and table-topic exercises and online survey access and comment cards.”

Included in the comments were local area kids’ images and creative outlook for their visions of their city in 2050 (see examples in article).

Abernethy emphasized, “This project is one of the key reasons I wanted to work for my city where we’ve lived for 30 years and brought up our family. I joined the city six years ago and became City Planner two years ago. It’s very exciting and an honor to do something like this, and we’re very excited to move to this next step. It will be presented to City Council at an upcoming meeting very soon.”

STRONG COMMUNITY SUPPORT The StPete2050 initiative has strong support from Preserve the Burg (PTB) from both Peter Belmont, a founding member and recent past president, and Jeff Schorr, owner of Craftsman House Gallery & Café, and a long-time PTB activist; Rui Farias, executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History; The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art; and many other local organizations.

PTB’s Schorr said earlier (February 2021 issue), “As Mayor Kriseman noted, in 2019 PTB received grant funding from

the 1972 Foundation to start a historic preservation revolving fund. The city of St. Petersburg matched the grant, and the PTB Historic Properties Program was born. A revolving fund is an active real estate-based program for protecting endangered properties using techniques such as: options, purchase/resale, easements and tax credits. These historic structures ultimately are returned to the private sector with deed restrictions in place.

“Another keystone of PTB is the Neighborhoods Program, also strongly supported by the city. The unique character of St. Petersburg’s historic neighborhoods is threatened by rampant demolition and the construction of new homes out of scale with their surroundings. Preserve the ‘Burg works with neighborhood residents and associations on solutions that maintain the historic character of our neighborhoods, including the creation of local historic districts, which discourage unnecessary demolitions and encourage the compatible new construction.”

Summing up, Mayor Rick Kriseman told Paradise News, “First, I want to thank our city team that has dedicated much of their time to StPete2050, and the future of Florida’s best city.

“StPete2050 not only helps us make informed decisions about the future of the Sunshine City today but will help the leaders of tomorrow. StPete2050 will guide programming and services throughout the city and in support of its sustainable, resilient, and equitable growth for the next 30 years. This citywide conversation about our future and the resulting vision plan will continue to honor our rich history.”

That was the thought process Chefs

Robert Hesse and Craig Munroe had when they launched Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz last March. And believe this, they have taken America’s ultimate comfort food to a whole new level.

Last March, we spoke with co-founder Craig Munroe to discuss an introductory cover story in our April 2020 edition, and he explained their plan to release this amazing new concept to the world. He told us that they were starting with a state-of-the-art food truck 22

that was already booked for over $500,000 in business for 2020 doing festivals and onsite lunches at car dealerships. They also acquired and were beginning a complete remodel of the old “Fetishes” building at 6305 Gulf Boulevard for their first brick and mortar location. They planned to be great corporate citizens, starting a foundation for underprivileged children called “No Kid 86’d”.

Then the pandemic hit! It seemed that if they had tried to find a worse time to start their business, they just could not have. Chef Robert Hesse and Craig Munroe have both

faced ridiculous odds alone before and come out ok, so they felt they could surely do it together. They were right too! Looking back, from our vantage point a year later, they have much to be proud of.

Everything has happened as they predicted it would, just a bit later.

The Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz food truck sat in front of Mastry’s Brewery for months after it appeared in Paradise NEWS, delivering food to our readers, even while other restaurants were shut down. They also took the initiative during the beginning of the Pandemic to take

care of everyone the best way they knew how, by handing out free Meltz every Friday.

Initially they invited all out of work hospitality employees and local musicians, two industries crushed by the pandemic, to come down and get dinner on them. Soon after, they decided to open it up to anyone in need.

“We felt it was our duty to give back to the people whose livelihoods were severely impacted.” said Craig.

When the brick and mortar store opened in August of 2020, it was off to the races.

“We’ve made a profit every month, even after giving 2% of gross sales to our “No Kid 86’d Foundation” said Craig, although December was “touch-and-go until Christmas week.”

This year, for the Super Bowl, there was a food truck “food court” set up for fans for 7 days prior to the game, and “we had a waiting line 12-hours-a-day for a week straight,” said Robert. “It was actually our first major event on the truck because everything else we had

booked last year was cancelled. Our staff killed it and the week was a huge success.”

Craig explained.

The location is open weekdays from 11am-11pm and weekends 11am-3am.

“Our goal is simply to create true Chef inspired comfort food… to bring homecooked classics to life in an all-new way… as an experience, not just a meal” says Chef Robert Hesse. “Creating these experiences requires attention to detail and the highest level of care. Herbaceous Cocktails: From lavender-infused tequila margaritas to tarragon syrup tequila cocktails, herbs are blooming in mixologists’ recipes. To make tarragon syrup, simply blanch 1½ oz. of tarragon leaves (no stems) for 15 seconds in boiling water, then transfer the leaves to an ice bath. In a blender, combine the leaves with 2 cups of simple syrup and blend until smooth. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

LOBSTER & CRAB CAKE BENEDICT INGREDIENTS: • 1-1½ lb fresh lobster • 6 purchased crab cakes or freshly made from recipe that follows • 6 poached eggs • 1 cup hollandaise sauce • 1 tbsp hot sauce (Tabasco or another brand) • 1 tbsp smoked paprika • 4oz lump crabmeat INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make the crab cakes (unless you are using purchased ones).

2. Fill a large pot with water to point capable of holding the fresh lobster submerged.

3. Bring the pot of water to a boil, then submerge the live lobster.

4. Boil the lobster for 10 to 12 minutes until it has turned to a bright red color.

5. Remove the lobster and let cool until you can crack the claws and tail. Chop into 1/2 inch pieces. Keep warm.

6. Make the hollandaise sauce. Melt butter in a small saucepan and let cool, then remove the white milk solids from the butter with a spoon.

7. In a large saucepan, add 2 inches of water and bring to a simmer.

8. Add egg yolks, 1/2 tbsp salt and lemon juice to a metal mixing bowl and place over the saucepan with water.

Whisk vigorously until it peaks (two to five minutes).

Remove from heat.

9. Slowly whisk butter into egg yolk mixture until smooth and slightly thickened.

10. Heat the crab cakes in the microwave until hot and place two on a serving plate. Drizzle the crab cakes with the hot sauce. Place lobster pieces on the crab cake halves, cover with the poached egg and hollandaise sauce. Place small amount of crab on top of the eggs. Garnish with smoked paprika.

CRAB CAKES FROM SCRATCH INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 large egg, beaten 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp hot sauce 1/2 lb jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs 1/4 cup canola oil 1 lemon, juiced INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise with the egg, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce until smooth.

2. In a medium bowl, combine the crabmeat with the panko. Mix in the mayonnaise mixture. Cover and refrigerate until chilled.

3. Form the crab mixture into eight patties, about 1½ inches thick.

In a large skillet, heat the oil to medium high. Add the crab cakes and cook over moderately high heat until deeply golden and heated through, about three minutes per side. Drizzle with fresh lemon juice.

Hide’s famed mixologist Niall McCourt is the beverage director, so expect retro-hip drinks. With 200 seats in the 800-capacity space, concerts will resume when the pandemic ebbs and expect more live-stream shows till then.

The Florida Social Club on Central Avenue is slowly opening, showcasing the restoration and transformation of the former State Theater. With the promise of a lounge menu and cocktail list, March kicks off with Gloria West & The Gents, The Black Honkeys with more local music coming. Mandarin

The Petty Experience @ Caddy’s Treasure Island 3/20 will be a spring fling featuring the music of Petty and The Wilburys. On my birthday 3/25, you’ll find me at Sunset Beach’s Ka’Tiki sipping a mai tai with the Cozmic Cowboyz (Jim Hamlin on lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitar and L.A. on (3-D) harmonica and vocals). Jannus Live’s monthly Grateful Dead tribute legend Uncle John’s Band performs 3/25. Slip into the nautical Galley downtown 3/27 for the talented Chris Powers, awesome eats and serious libations. And there’s always live music Friday-Saturday at Clearwater’s 49th Street Big Storm Brewery and 3 Daughters Brewing (DTSP).

COLONOSCOPY Is Not a Dirty Word As COVID-19 has gripped the country, colorectal cancer screenings have dropped dramatically. This is a dangerous trend.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and prevention is the key to treating and beating colon cancer.

Overall, the most effective way to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly, beginning at age 50. More than 90% of colorectal cancers occur in people 50 years old or older.

If you’re younger than 50 but have an increased risk such as a family member who had colorectal cancer, we’ll start screenings even earlier. We could start as early as 10 years earlier than your most recent relative’s diagnosis.

Now let’s talk about that dreaded C-word - colonoscopy.

Bottom line, no one likes the idea of getting a colonoscopy. If you’ve had one in the past, I can tell you that the preparation has gotten better. It’s not fun, but it’s definitely better than it used to be.

While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for screening for colon cancers, there are other less-invasive options out there.

There are roughly a dozen options for colorectal cancer screening, including at-home test kits or exams that can be done in your doctor’s office, and they all discover cancer equally well.

Your family physician should discuss all of the options with you.

Remember, the best screening is the one that you actually do.

Prevention is such a valuable tool when it comes to cancer.

For years women have been comfortable talking about mammograms and discussing a colonoscopy shouldn’t be any different. Any good family doctor is going to have that conversation with you. Colorectal cancer screening should be discussed every year in your Annual Wellness Visit, along with all the other preventive screening measures you and your doctor lay out for you.

As far as lifestyle approaches to decrease your risk for colorectal cancer, just having a good, clean, healthy diet goes a long way.

High red meat consumption has been associated with colon cancers, while a diet high in fiber and leafy greens can be protective.

With any disease or illness, the best approach is always prevention, and the first step to a solid prevention plan is having good communication with your family physician.

Now, through a yearlong sharing collaboration, four paintings from the Art Bridges Collection by celebrated 20th century American artists are on display in the museum’s Modern and Post War galleries. Works by Jacob Lawrence, Hughie Lee-Smith, Norman Wilfred Lewis, and Lee Krasner will remain on display through February 2022. A fifth painting by Marsden Hartley will arrive in June and remain on view through August 2022. The loans expand the museum’s inclusivity with works by Black, female, and LGBTQ artists.

His lifelong career has been in urban and regional planning, including 29 years at the Hillsborough County Growth Management Department.

Even immature worms can affect your cat’s health, causing serious breathing difficulties. In ferrets, one or two heartworms often settle in the pulmonary artery in the heart.

As they grow, the heart becomes dangerously enlarged.

Prevent Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is a life-threatening parasitic infection, which sickens dogs, cats, and ferrets. It is much easier to prevent than to treat.

How Pets Get the Disease Heartworm disease is transmitted when a mosquito bites an infected animal and then bites your pet. Heartworm larvae circulate through their bloodstreams. Months later, the larvae begin to grow into long, white worms that look like spaghetti. Those that reach the blood vessels of the heart and lungs cause the most damage. Male heartworms measure 4-6 inches in length, while females may be twice as long. Dogs can be infected with up

Symptoms of Heartworm Disease Dogs may start to cough, or seem abnormally tired, eat less, lose weight and have trouble breathing. The infection can eventually cause a swollen abdomen, abnormal lung sounds, collapse and even death. Cats and ferrets infected with heartworms may develop Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease.

When immature worms reach the small lung arteries, an inflammatory response occurs damaging the air sacs, arteries, and small airways. Infected cats may have difficulty breathing or breathe rapidly. Other signs include disinterest in food, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, gagging, and collapse.

Treatment varies. Dogs get medications that

kill heartworms and reduce inflammation.

Medications that kill heartworms aren’t safe for cats or ferrets. Cats get drugs to reduce inflammation, antibiotics, cardiovascular medication or oxygen if needed. Surgery may be needed. Even if heartworm surgery is successful, damage to your pet’s heart, lungs, and organs will be permanent.

How Can Heartworm Disease Be Prevented? Oral, topical, and injectable heartworm medications reduce your pet’s heartworm risk. Your veterinarian can help.

Give your pet heartworm medication year-round. Mosquito season may not always follow the same pattern every year.

FISHING INSHORESheepshead continue to bite well. They love fiddler crabs, small but strong hooks and light leaders with minimal weight. These sheepsheads will continue to bite continuously through the year but spread out as the water warms up. Spanish mackerel showed back up around beach piers and jetties. They love chasing fast moving flashy lures or gotcha plugs retrieved quickly. Whiting and silver trout are also biting well around the beaches and passes and beach piers as well. Snook action is going well along the flats, residential canals, and mangrove shorelines. Redfish continue to be super active. These guys are in rather good concentrations around the bays especially along those grass flats and mangrove shorelines in around 2-4ft of water. Cut bait and slower moving soft plastics are favorites to target redfish. Trout action remains incredibly good this time of year in the flats, mangroves and dock lines. Greenbacks and live shrimp are go-to live baits for trout on light tackle and the soft plastic shrimp or paddle tails are great artificial baits. Top water lures work best at sunrise, dusk or during very overcast days. Snook, redfish, and trout remain catch and release only through end of May. Pompano has really picked up too. These guys love fiddler crabs, sand fleas or live shrimp on the bottom around those sandy edges of the flats or channels. The small bucktails with the ‘feathers’ or ‘hair’ trimmed back just behind the apex of the hook or the doc’s goofy jigs are best for the pompano.

NEAR & OFFSHOREHogfish action continues to impress near shore, biting best at 40-60ft. Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, sandfleas, and rock shrimp work well. Lane snapper are really thick from 50-110ft. These guys will also take small pieces of squid or chunks of threadfin. Mangrove snapper is strong at 110-140ft of water offshore. In 50-90ft use live shrimp near the mangroves using the same knocker rig method we use for hogfish. Red grouper action is going well around that deepest water close to the closure line. The deep-water closure or 20 fathom closure continues through the end of March but that hasn’t slowed us down from seeing some nice red grouper around 100120ft of water. Fishing potholes, hard rock bottom and small ledges were seeing some nice hungry red grouper mixed in with steady mangrove, lane, and vermillion snapper action too. Scamp grouper are mainly caught out deeper past the 120ft mark, but we have seen some nice fish caught lately even in the open area when fishing around 120ft for those red grouper where we can keep them! The scamp love smaller pinfish or threadfins most of the time. Also, we catch them often while targeting mangrove snapper with the double snell rig and lighter tackle. This month Chef Kevin Johnson of Crooked Johnson Meats is highlighted. He grew up in a family that loved to travel and cook.

In Charleston, South Carolina he experienced local seafood prepared in the Gullah Geechee culture. “Fishing and cooking was something we did each week.”

During high school his first job was baking bread at a diner in Cape Canaveral. He was Chef at Ulysses’s Prime Steakhouse until his journey returned him to the Cypress in downtown Charleston.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

Is Your Dream Waiting for YOU to Come True?

- Henry David Thoreau Have you ever been called to do something for yourself or go in a direction that you knew would gain disapproval from others?

Most of us have at some time or another.

Recently, I fulfilled a dream I’ve had for quite a while; I got a tattoo. If my beloved, deceased mother could see it I am sure she would not give her nod of approval; it was her long-held opinion that only Hell’s Angels and crusty old sailors, of which I am neither, had tattoos. One of my old friends rolled his eyes, wondering if I had gone bonkers, trying to look “hip” at seventy-one years of age. I assured him that wasn’t the case and that while I loved him, I didn’t do it for his or anyone else’s approval or disapproval.

I explained that I wasn’t a latent rebel trying to make a statement to the world; I did it for myself. Period.

What I know is that getting a tattoo is all about commitment; once you start there is no turning back; it becomes part of who you

are. Because I believe I know who I am I wasn’t looking for another label to define me; I didn’t want a tattoo to have a tattoo.

In other words, inscribing “Born to be wild,” or having a skull and crossbones, or even my wife’s name tattooed on my arm didn’t call to me. I wanted my tattoo to be symbolic for me, as a mindfulness tool, to serve as a reminder of who I came here to be and what was mine to do. If I was going to be looking at it every day for the rest of my life, I wanted it to mean something to me – even if no one else saw it or liked it.

One day, while looking at my business logo, I was reminded of why I chose a compass to go with my vision statement of “Guiding People to Purpose.” With that remembrance, in a heartbeat, I knew what my tattoo would be. I reasoned, with a compass on my arm and the North Star pointing upward, toward my heart, my innate guidance system had a built-in visual display. In those moments

when I may be feeling uncertain, or in need of a reminder of what is important, with one glance at my arm I will always know where to look first for guidance and direction; not to the world or the people in it, but within.

The takeaway: It’s important to listen to what the people who matter in your life have to say, but at the end of the day no one knows better than you what dreams and aspirations lie silently in your heart waiting for you to come true. You don’t necessarily have to get a tattoo on your arm to know that, you just need to, as Thoreau infers, be willing to go confidently in the direction of your dreams when your heart calls and live the life YOU have imagined even when others may think you have gone a bit bonkers, and they will, and that’s okay.
