Yokum Silver: Mined or Laundered? E

ver since my family moved to the Ozarks, I have heard tales of the lost Yokum silver mine and Yokum minted silver dollars. It seemed to me that no two stories were exactly alike. Assuming that the histories written, told, and retold about Yokum Silver Dollar are true, the source of the silver used to mint the coins has remained a debated topic to this day. In Traces of Silver, Artie Ayers lays out a compelling story of the Yokum family’s history in the Ozarks. His book is secondhand memoir of sorts as he lays out the “true” story as told by Soloman Yoachum on his deathbed. Well sort of Soloman told his son, and the story was eventually passed to Soloman’s great grandson Joseph, and Joseph shared it with the author, Artie. The short of it goes like this: Jim, Jake, and Soloman Yoachum moved to the Ozarks circa 1816. They lived near and peaceably among the Delaware native population; married into the tribe even. The Yoachums became so wealthy with silver that they minted Yokum (shortened to fit on a coin) silver dollars. There are stories of these dollars in circulation at the time. The author tells of his father finding 5 coins in 1923, and spending the rest of his years obsessing about the location of the mine. In the book, it is asserted that as the Delaware tribe were pushed from their granted land further westward, they traded the location of their silver mine to August, 2021
