Parade of Homes Celebrates 30 Years “Something old, something New” reads the headline of the first issue of the Parade of Homes Magazine of Branson, Missouri. February 2, 1987. Now celebrating three decade of business, magazine founder and owner Shirley LaCore shares, “My first office was my kitchen table and I worked part-time for the Taylor Made News and Wes Taylor let me stay late and type my ads on his machine. Since I had never attend a typing class the first issues contained a few errors.” At that time, there were several free publications in the area, the main competition was a Illinois-based real estate magazine. “It was a hard sell,” remembers LaCore. “It took about 4 1/2 years before the majority of the realtor’s were convinced Parade was here to stay.” Today, Parade of Homes is the mainstay in the Branson and Tri-Lakes region, with copies on stands in Branson, Kimberling City, Hollister and thru out the Tri-Lakes area -- as well as in Harrison, Arkansas and Springfield, MO. From the initial 8-page layout --printed in black and white on newsprint-- Parade slowly grew to 24 pages then to 48 pages and on up to at it’s highest point with 274 pages in 2007, printed on high gloss full color stock. At that time the Tri-Lakes Board of Realtors had a membership of something close to 1,500 members. In thirty years Parade has never missed a press date. Although there have been challenges, one month the hard drive crashed and lost were 130 pages one day out from press time. By pulling in everyone that had previously worked for Parade in the past the press time was only four hours late. The early pages were created by cut and paste method. The type setting machines had NO spell check, NO means of making a correction everything had to be re-typed and cut out and wax pasted on the page. All photos were hand picked up from each real estate office. Then taken to the darkroom and changed into a black -and -white half tone and re-sized to fit into the space on the page. Pages were then pasted 8 pages up on a large layout sheet and hand carried to the Print Company. From the kitchen table, Parade of Homes would move to a tiny basement office beneath Branson Drug. After a year and a half, there would be another move to above-ground house on Sixth Street. By this time the magazine had reached 150+ pages but another economic downturn came in late 1980s and the pages dropped back to 88 pages. The real estate strength is tied heavily to the national and regional economy. So ups and downs will always effect small publications. “It was fabulous,” LaCore remembers, musing on Branson’s now-famous economic boom in the 1990’s “we had 1,500 hard working realtors at that time.” Long-gone were laborious page paste ups and messy darkroom chemicals. A staff of seven presided over new computers with high end Abode software. Monthly issue were now uploaded to the printer by the internet. “I fought giving up the darkroom,” LaCore said “we can resize photo’s faster than the scanner, but I was proven wrong.” LaCore feels fortunate. “I’ve had several employees that have stayed for many years. It make it so much easier when you can retain trained employees. Deanna Vernon was my first employee and she stayed for almost 10 years and now is selling real estate with her mother, Nelda Lies. Melissa Bittle, Deb Scott, Sandy Pitchford, Jamie Bacon, Tammie LaCore, all reached close to 10 years with Parade.” Thumbing through some of the first issues you will find familiar names. Real Estate offices from 30 years ago that are still active. Foggy River Realty, Gerken and Associates, Shepherd of the Hills Realty, Cedar Branch Realty, ReMax Lifestyle Realty, Gary Coder Properties (formerly Gary Coder’s United Country) and Springfield’s Murney & Associates. Although current trends of the internet have threatened print publications, Parade of Homes Publications, Inc. has remained strong. With paid subscriptions mailed out every month nationwide, the interest in the Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas has stayed strong. A nation-wide survey by “The Association of Magazine Media, a factbook following print media since 1866” shows that interest in print magazines and publications rose by 6.5% in 2015 nationwide. With readership with the under 25 age group growing every year. Senior readership has stayed strong in spite of the internet. Parade of Homes is on the internet with two websites. paradeofhomesbranson.com and parade-homes.com. Readers can order a free issue sent to them from both web sites. Despite the ups and downs of the market. Print advertising still has it’s place in reaching the real estate customer, with potential customers purchasing a years subscription to Parade of Homes, for $15., and if bulk mail is late getting to their home, Shirley stated “We get calls, we can explain that the pages are all on the internet and the answer we get “I don’t want to use the web I want my magazine.” The Parade of Homes office is located at 9786 State Hwy 165 between Hollister and the Table Rock Dam. After purchasing the building from her son Brad (formerly the LaCore Auto Body Shop) she renovated the building into a efficiently designed office space. Shirley has served as Ambassador for the Branson Chamber for 29 years, is a member of the Hollister and Table Rock Lake Chambers, Table Rock Art Guild, Springfield Regional Arts Council, Tri-Lakes Board of Realtors. In 2004 LaCore was awarded Business Woman of the Year for Missouri, Shirley, along with her granddaughter Michelle, traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend a banquet with the then President George W. Bush. LaCore never set out to be in the publishing business. She grew up on a farm in North Missouri, her parents moved to Missouri from Calgary, Alberta, Canada just before she was born. Her Dad, William McCusky Ertel moved the family south to be close to his grandparents living at Greentop, MO. Shirley was the second oldest of six kids, she learned her work ethic the hard way, on the farm. At age 12 she decided to try something different and started waiting table at the Greentop Cafe. That was a lot easier than farm work, even on the days she had to ride her horse to town. Over the years Shirley has worked in various fields: One of the first women to single-handley run a Moble Home Sales, in Kirksville, MO and one of the first automobile sales woman. While working as Business Editor for the Monitor Newspaper in McAllen, TX. she produced a weekly 48 page insert for the New Home Builders Association. Then moving back to the Branson area to be near her sons and their families, Robert and Brad LaCore and 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grand children. Since most small businesses fail in the first 5 years, Shirley feels very blessed at “Lasting this long, 30 years, WOW!.” “I didn’t order stationary for the first year and -- 30 years later -- I still haven’t!
