Amery Middle School staff have joined the ‘You Matter’ campaign. The mission is to promote positive mental health. Sharing the simple message ‘You Matter’ is encouraging, inspiring, and shows students that they are cared for and appreciated.

Have We Got News for You!

IN FALL OF 2019, the Intermediate School relaunched the Amery Intermediate School (AIS) news team. This was a project that stemmed from the work of Mrs. Bartlett and Mr. Simonson who laid the foundation for the current team. The goal is for fifth grade students to produce a recorded news program to broadcast to Intermediate School classrooms on Friday mornings.

Fifth grade students are encouraged to apply for one of twenty positions on the news team. This past fall, forty-five students applied.

News team members learn to write, record, and edit using various forms of technology. Students brainstorm ideas for segments and gather the information needed. They take turns running the entire set, covering everything from mic checks to “quiet on the set.” Many students begin by anticipating a role behind the scenes, but as production starts, their confidence grows and most want to step in front of the camera.

The goal is for students to independently produce the entire news program from start to finish by the end of the

school year. This means they will have successfully used Google Slides, various sound editing software, green screen programs, picture editing software, iMovie, interviewing skills, and writing skills. One of the highlights for kids on the news team is the sense of accomplishment when a complete production comes together and they can be proud of their end product.

The news team is facilitated by school counselor Troy Mlynarczyk, media specialist Annie Braaten, and 5th grade teacher Michael Simonson.

AMERY HORTICULTURE & GRADE 3

Students Teaching Students For about fifteen years, Amery Intermediate third graders, along with Amery High School Horticulture students, have worked together on a spring planting project. In the past, third grade students walked to the high school for a lesson in planting taught by high school horticulture students, visited the small animals, and toured the greenhouse. This year, due to COVID restrictions, the high school students taught the lessons at the Intermediate School.

The students-teaching-students project is always a great learning experience, not only for the younger children, but for the older students as well. Teachers know that if done well, students teaching students is one of the best ways for students to learn. Because the studentteachers are young, it is great that they

teach to more than one class. The first time is always a little rough, but then after some review and revisions, by the time they teach the last group, all the ‘teachers’ are doing a better job!

It is always exciting for AHS Agriculture instructor Derrick Meyer. According to Meyer, “I have students that are afraid to talk to their peers, but blossom when they have to talk to younger kids. They are giving a speech and they do not even know it!”

The lesson does not end after the initial planting. The high school students take the new plantings to the greenhouse and nurture them until they are grown and ready to be returned to the third-grade students in early May.

ARCHERY...

A Lifetime Sport Intermediate School students were able to enjoy archery in recent physical education classes. The archery lessons are presented as part of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) with universal-fit NASP equipment.

NASP promotes instruction in international-style target archery to improve educational performance and participation.

NASP uses time-proven and state-of-the-art training techniques and philosophies and educational methods to provide a foundation to support a lifetime of archery enjoyment.

Archery promotes inclusivity, integrity, responsibility, discipline, sportsmanship, and composure. It is also a sport that millions around the world turn to for exercise, recreation, challenge, competition, and relaxation. Archery is for everybody and can accomplish many things with proper instruction, practice, and a positive attitude.

STUDENT ENGINEERS Mr. Wolf’s fourth grade students were introduced to biomedical engineering and learned how engineers use their knowledge of the human body to solve problems related to the body. Using some hands-on activities, the students learned about the engineering design process and then attempted their own biomedical engineering challenge. After being provided with limited supplies, their challenge was to create a knee brace that would allow an “injured” leg to have the same range of motion as a healthy leg.

Through a variety of tests, the students scored their designs for range of motion, usability, and durability. Based on those results, they wrote about the improvements they would make to their initial design. They did a great job collaborating and created some impressive knee brace designs.

Lien Staff Work to Increase Awareness, Understanding, and Respect At Lien Elementary, the PBIS Tier 1 Team has made it a goal to “Learn More About and Implement Culturally Responsive Practices.” School staff, through trainings and book studies, have made efforts to become aware of their personal biases regarding race and nationality and avoid injecting those biases into the classroom experience. They avoid the use of stereotypes and generalizations of families and groups, have images and artifacts on display that represent student backgrounds and cultures, and allow students to demonstrate achievement in more than one way.

This year, staff and students are also taking time to recognize and celebrate National Hispanic, Native American, Black History, and Asian/Pacific Islander Months. During each of these months, they hold two weeks of school-wide announcements that are informative and allow students to become familiar with history, culture, and people who have made contributions to the United States. They also showcase a bulletin board, display artifacts in the library, read related books in the classroom, offer coloring/activity pages, teach greetings and counting in different languages, provide art projects, music, and more. The hope is to increase awareness, understanding, and respect of differences.

Lien Elementary is grateful to have received over sixty books for grades 4K-2. The books were obtained through the Mental Health Grant to support the goal of Culturally Responsive Practices.

In Lien Elementary art class, students at each grade level recognized Black History Month by learning about different artists: PREK - Reggie Laurent, a Contemporary African American Artist KINDERGARTEN -Alma Woodsey Thomas, the First African American Artist to have artwork displayed in the White House GRADE 1 - Faith Ringold, Artist/Illustrator known for her beautiful story quilts GRADE 2 – Karen Katz, author of ‘The Colors of Us’

FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR The School District of Amery wishes to extend its gratitude to our students, their parents, staff, and community stakeholders in the school experience for their enormous patience and abundant flexibility during this school year.

Our students and their families faced the challenges of recent months with dignity and perseverance. We are all better off because of the efforts of all of you.

The school year began with a hopeful re-opening only to be faced with a closure between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have proudly served our students in a face-to-face model of instruction, IN THE GREEN, for well over two months since returning in January. Our students and staff have persisted through the inconveniences of masks, social distancing, and a myriad of other changes to the school experience.

As we move swiftly towards the end of the school year, the School District of Amery stands firm in our promise to continue affording the best school experience possible for Amery students. Our mindset is decidedly committed to high-quality classroom instruction, a spring athletic season, as well as ‘making happen’ all manner of activities which have historically charted our path through the spring on into the summer. Events such as concerts, Prom, the fifth grade Camp Wapo experience, senior awards night, graduation and more are all presently being planned.

The staff of the School District of Amery sincerely appreciate the way our students have embraced the many measures put into place to keep everyone safe. Amery students, our very most prized possession, have shone brightest through the darkest of days. Their faithful commitment to their school experience has allowed us to be in a face-to-face instructional model for much of the school year. We, the staff of Amery, are forever grateful to our students for their hopeful attitude. They have made it possible to achieve a sense of normalcy that one year ago seemed altogether impossible. For that, we all owe a debt of gratitude, and we humbly say thank you!

Wisconsin’s inter-district public school open enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend school districts other than the one in which they live.

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE IN OPEN ENROLLMENT?

Students in 5-year-old kindergarten to grade 12 may apply to participate in open enrollment.

Open enrollment for prekindergarten, 4-year-old kindergarten and early childhood education is limited. Parents should call their resident school districts to find out if their preschool-aged children qualify for open enrollment.

HOW AND WHEN MAY PARENTS APPLY?

The Open Enrollment application period for the 2021-22 school is now open and will remain open until April 30, 2021.

2021-2022 4K Preschool Registration

• Lien Elementary School offers 4K Preschool all day every day with a parent’s choice of a Legacy classroom or Children’s House Montessori. Children’s House has an enrollment limit and a lottery system for enrollment. If you request the Children’s House Montessori program and your child is not selected through the lottery, he/she will automatically be placed in a 4K Legacy Preschool classroom.

• To enter 4K Preschool, your child must be 4 years of age on or before 9/1/21.

• The 4K Preschool registration information for was mailed out on February 1st. If you are new to the Amery School District, or did not receive a mailing, please call the elementary school for a registration packet.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND Dustin Coleman graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology and a concentration in Mechanical Design PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND CURRENT EMPLOYMENT 2013 - 2017: Ruger Firearms; Newport, NH - Design Engineer 2015 - Present: Cole-TAC; Newport, NH - Owner/Designer/Engineer Coleman and his wife launched Cole-TAC in 2015 as a part-time hobby with a single sewing machine. The business quickly outgrew the single machine. They now have retail space, 17 employees, over 60 industrial sewing machines, a laser cutter, and a CNC fabric machine. Cole-TAC manufactures sewn specialty goods, outdoor gear, and other tactical accessories for firearm enthusiasts and hunters, as well as domestic and international military and law enforcement agencies. They also own and operate an overseas facility located in Riga, Latvia.

When COVID-19 created a shortage of personal protective equipment in nursing homes, Dustin knew Cole-TAC could help. Within one weekend, they designed new patterns and processes and purchased new machinery and materials that met federal health guidelines. By the end of this past summer, Cole-TAC produced approximately 5,000 masks and over 60,000 hospital gowns. They were humbled to receive the Sullivan County 2020 Outstanding Community Partner Award due to their support.

HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCES AT AMERY SCHOOLS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? “I feel very thankful for the exceptional knowledge base and experiences I received from the Amery School District. My years spent with Amery’s teachers, administrators, staff members, and coaches have profoundly influenced every step along my career path. A well-rounded education gave me the necessary tools to succeed in college and in my current career while operating my own company. During my time in the Amery school system, I learned not only essential academic skills but also practical skills and a business mindset. Most of my profession involves engineering; therefore, Amery High School math and science courses such as calculus with Mr. Vincent and physics with Mr. Bosley have proven essential. Throughout those courses, I gained vital skills such as problem solving and critical thinking. However, without English, computer, technology, and history classes, I would not have experienced the same success. Communicating clearly and effectively with team members as well as with clients is vital to personal and business growth.

Beyond the classroom, Amery’s athletic department offered me valuable opportunities. Whether I was on a wrestling mat being coached by Scott Marko or running on a cross country course with Paul Enslin’s encouragement, I learned the importance of teamwork, goal setting, hard work, and perseverance.

Overall, the critical skills, knowledge, and experiences gained from the Amery School District serve as the base I continue to grow upon today.”

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND Megan Bohan earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, majoring in Neurobiology and Psychology. She went on to earn her master’s degree in Data Science from Northwestern University.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND CURRENT EMPLOYMENT Bohan’s professional experience has primarily been in Information Technology. After graduating from UW Madison, she worked in Implementation Services at Epic, where she supported deployments of their inpatient pharmacy system.

For the last six years, she has worked at 3M in Information Technology (IT) fulfilling roles on a few different teams – first doing IT system implementations at some of 3M’s warehouses globally, then leading process improvement projects. Her current role is on the Data Analytics team. Megan is responsible for 3M’s portfolio of data visualization tools, as well as a few of the cloud technologies used within the Data Analytics team.

She also manages a team of software developers and data engineers who build applications that explain and solve complex problems through data.

HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCES AT AMERY SCHOOLS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? “My interest in technology was solidified during my time at Amery schools. I took many classes in the STEM field. Some of my favorites were chemistry, calculus, AP biology, and keyboarding. Those classes set a foundation for me to build on throughout my academic and professional career.”

COMMUNITY EDUCATION Upcoming for ADULTS BARN QUILT WORKSHOP

Join in a fun-filled day of painting your very OWN, unique 2’ x 2’ or 4’ x 4’ barn quilt. All supplies, boards and instruction are provided, but you must submit your own pattern at least two weeks before the class.

Patterns can be found by searching online for ‘barn quilts,’ searching on Pinterest, or going through the photos on the instructor’s Facebook page @mjbarnquilts.

BEGINNING BLACKSMITHING

Enjoy two evenings developing and practicing foundational skills in the historic art of blacksmithing. Class will cover safety, tools, fire control, basic techniques, terminology, and working with coal and gas-fired forges. Class is for adults, but minors (under 18) may attend with a guardian. Completing this class enables participants to volunteer in the blacksmith shop in the Pioneer Village - Living History Museum in Cameron, WI. LEARN TO GOLF

After just four lessons, you will have the tools necessary to step onto the course and play with confidence. However, we know that getting started can be intimidating. Our beginner golf class is designed to help novices get over their fear and get on the course in a low-pressure environment. Class will cover rules, etiquette, and swing fundamentals. All you need to do is show up. We even have clubs available if you don’t have your own.The first night will be in the classroom, the second on the driving range, and the final nights on the putting green. At course completion, you will receive one 9-hole weekday pass to be used at Amery Golf Club this year. WARRIOR SOCCER CAMPS

The Warrior Spring Soccer Camp is an opportunity for students to give soccer a try, or to get out their shin guards and tune up their soccer skills to prepare for the spring season. We will venture from fundamentals to advanced skills through exciting challenges and games.

Grades 4-8 will finish the day with a 30-minute full-field scrimmage with the camp staff.

BABYSITTER TRAINING

Co-sponsored by the American Red Cross The purpose of this course is to provide youth, ages 10-15 who are planning to babysit, with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. The course covers 6 primary areas: You’re the Boss: A Guide to Leadership; The Business of Babysitting; Safe and Sound on the Job; Understanding Children from 0-10; From Feeding to Bedtime: Caring for Children; It’s an Emergency . . . Now What?

Students should bring a life-sized baby doll, paper and pencil, water bottle, and a lunch.

AMERY YOUTH FOOTBALL ROOKIE TACKLE

WARRIOR SKILLS & DRILLS BASKETBALL CAMP

Girls & Boys completing grades 3-8 in spring 2021 Camp will focus on our young athlete’s entire package: shooting, ball handling, passing, and defense. This is a great camp for the player who wants to develop into a more complete player, learn the game of basketball, improve skills, and have fun while doing it.

JUNIOR GOLF

For youth from Amery and surrounding communities completing grades 4-5 in spring 2021. Rookie tackle is a variation of tackle football with a smaller field, 7 on 7, and no three-point stances on the line. Rookie tackle will teach athletes to learn to tackle correctly, play multiple positions to master more skills. Practice jersey and all equipment needed for rookie tackle football will be provided. First contact date to be determined for early August.

PRACTICES: Twice per week beginning in mid-August.

SOFTBALL SKILLS & DRILLS SUMMER DAY CAMP

For girls completing grades 4-8 in spring 2021 Camp will focus on all aspects of softball: throwing, defense, hitting, bunting, base running, and pitching! Players will work on offense, defense, and pitching each day through teaching mechanics and drills with an emphasis on competitive games and situations.

DATES: June 14-17 at Jorgenson Fields TIME: Everyone from 10 am – noon and Pitchers & Catchers from 10 am - 12:30 pm COST: $55 per camper includes t-shirt if registered by May 14.

HUNTER EDUCATION INTERNET FIELD DAY COURSES: DNR CERTIFICATION

Students must complete the online hunter internet field day course prior to attending this in-person field day course.

In class, students will reinforce what they learned online through hands-on firearm handling, demonstrations and practical exercises as well as a multiple-choice exam. Upon successfully completing all portions of the field day course, the student is then awarded a hunter education safety certificate. Students of any age may take a hunter internet field day course. The course is taught at a 6th grade reading level.

Amery students can sign up to ride the Summer School bus in the morning but will need a ride after class. Free breakfast and lunch available at school.
