Breaking Ground at the New School Farm KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS HELP PLANT THEIR FUTURE CHRISTMAS TREES DID YOU KNOW that Wisconsin is known as the Christmas Tree Capital of the World? As part of the new school farm, the Amery FFA and agriculture department started a new tradition to educate students about the Christmas tree farm industry. The program was designed to not only educate our students but to also build a connection between our school and its students.

Each spring, the kindergarten students will plant trees with the high school Amery FFA students at the new school farm. The Amery FFA students will then care for and trim those trees for the next nine years. When the kindergartners are freshmen in high school, they, along with their families, will get to select one tree from the school farm that they helped to plant years earlier. The extra trees will be sold, and the cycle will continue.

In early May of this year, the first batch of 180 trees was planted with our current kindergarten students, the Amery Class of 2034!

Deidra Meyer, one of the Presidents of the Amery FFA said, “We are trying to make a positive difference in the lives of students and to show the importance of agriculture within our community. This program should be a great way to get kids excited about our school and teach how to plant trees at the same time!”

Mr. Derrick Meyer has been dreaming of starting this program for a long time. Mr. Meyer states, “This is just the beginning of the exciting programs we will be running at the new school farm. Other parts of the school farm include the planting of twenty-three acres with corn.

We will be making a corn maze. In the fall we will not only have the maze but also a haunted hayride and hog roast.”

Next spring they will also purchase hogs, sheep and goats. Students will raise them and show and sell most of them at the Polk County Fair as part of the Quality Meats program. The extra animals will be sold to the school as part of Amery’s Farm-to-School program.

Why a Bearded Dragon Makes a Good Class Pet

HAVE YOU EVER wondered if a bearded dragon is a good class pet? Well we can tell you why we think a bearded dragon makes a good class pet.

Some things that make a bearded dragon a good class pet are students have fun feeding the bearded dragon dandelions and the students have fun watching the teachers feed the dragon crickets.

Students also like watching the dragon move/crawl around its cage and step/look in its water bowl.

Another reason why a bearded dragon makes a good class pet is if someone is having a bad day, and they come to school, they watch the bearded dragon and it makes them happy. Also, during reading time kids love to read to the bearded dragon and if kids are struggling to read, it helps to read to the bearded dragon.

You need a name for your bearded dragon so students have fun coming up with names and then voting. Students get inspired and then they sometimes draw it and you could hang up those drawings on the bearded dragon’s aquarium.

If you think you want to get a bearded dragon as a class pet, we think it is a great idea.

In our Montessori classroom, here at Amery Intermediate School, we used these reasons and more to convince our teacher and principal that we should have a bearded dragon. Aidan and Niko even made a PowerPoint. Our beardie is named Parmesan and we love taking care of her!

THE “WORDPLAY READERS” The Wordplay Readers are a small group of people from the Amery area dedicated to weekly (storytelling) readings in the kindergarten and first grade classes of Lien Elementary School.

It all started when Don Hansen first volunteered to read in Miss Mugerauer’s first grade class over 20 years ago. It didn’t take long for him to become a weekly guest reader.

One day, when leaving school, he was confronted by a first grade student from a different class who asked why he reads stories to that class, but not his. After speaking to that student’s teacher, Don was pleased to add another class to his schedule. The following school year he added another, then another, then it became evident he would need to get others involved.

His friends were more than enthusiastic to help, and they found that with several readers involved they would be able to accommodate the entire first and kindergarten grades. A rotating schedule of readers also allowed greater continuity.

The periodic absence of any reader could be filled with another reader. Thus, the Wordplay Readers were born.

It wasn’t long before they added both Clayton and Clear Lake School Districts to their schedule of weekly visits.

Hansen described their mission as extra-curricular; “we are not teachers or educators, we are facilitators, our purpose is not to instruct but to entice. We want to provide a sense of enjoyment in reading; that reading is fun; and to stimulate their imagination through storytelling.”

On Senior Awards Night!

On Awards Night, 130 scholarships were presented to members of the AHS Class of 2022. Local money awarded to students totaled approximately $147,100.

In addition to local scholarships, students were awarded money from corporations, families, and individuals outside of the Amery community including the Academic Excellence Award of $9,000, the Technical Excellence Award of $6,750, a Kohl Excellence scholarship of $10,000, a Burger King Foundation scholarship of $50,000 and a Hagan scholarship of $48,000.

The class of 2022 received a grand total of $270,850 in scholarship awards.

2022 Facilities Referendum Update FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR Highlighted in this edition of the School District of Amery newsletter are the graduating class of 2022 and the staff who are retiring at the end of this school year. For our graduates, this spring ends the chapter of their years in public school and the dawning of new adventures beyond life in the Amery schools. Senior Awards Night, the senior trip to Interstate State Park, the Senior Walk, and Graduation bring to a beautiful finality the days of being a kid in school. It is with mixed emotions that we celebrate the great many accomplishments of our seniors and with a sentimental sadness say goodbye.

The Big Picture

It is an exciting time in the district as we move forward with critical facilities projects that will improve learning environments for our students!

Meetings are underway with staff and administrators to gather input to incorporate into designs.

Site visits are planned to other districts to see the latest designs for teaching, learning, and indoor air quality.

The design phase will be followed by the bidding and construction phases.

Life spent in education is a life spent well. Our retirees have charted the paths of their work lives surrounded by the goodness of Amery kids, cherished by our families, and valued for their contributions to our community. The end of this school year is our retiree’s wonderful culmination of years of selfless service to others. After thousands of kids, countless hours, too many events to count, and stories upon stories, our retirees are moving on to other life pursuits. Those in the School District of Amery they leave behind are honored to have worked beside them, and our families equally proud to know that their kids have had them as their teacher, their principal, their custodian, and their playground/classroom/ office aide. Congratulations, and we wish you well!

CONSTRUCTION

As we move through the last remaining days of the school year, we look forward to a summer which will springboard our district and community into the excitement of changes which will alter the landscape of how we provide education to Amery kids. With the recent passage of the referendum, there are big changes ahead for our school district. The district is diligently working with our architectural firm and performance contractor to complete the plans for work in each of our school buildings. Following this process, the district will put out bids and contract the work to be completed on campus in 2023 and 2024. Most maintenance work will begin in earnest in the spring of 2023. See the projected timeline on this page and watch for updates on the district website, in future newsletters, in the Amery Free Press, and at Board of Education meetings.

AMS Genius Hour Expo Students in grades 6-8 spent the past few months working hard on their Genius Hour projects where they explored their own individual passions and ideas to present at the Community Genius Expo on May 13. Twice a week, students worked independently or in small groups to delve into topics that really interested them.

Genius Hour is a way to build lifelong learning skills while expanding an individual’s knowledge of certain topics. Corporations around the world are using a similar process to tap into the ingenuity of their employees and promote creative concepts and processes for their businesses.

How do dancers get the mentality and stability to go on pointe?

What are the different parts of the brain, and how does the brain react to pain?

How is the brain affected by music?

I chose this topic because I really love dancing. I am not able to go on pointe yet because my feet aren’t strong enough, so I wanted to do some research and learn about it so that when the time comes and I can get my very own pointe shoes, I will be an expert and the process will go much smoother.

I selected this question because I have always wondered how the brain works, and my mom told me a little bit about the brain, which sparked my interest.

When I was researching this topic, I learned about the different styles and techniques of ballet. I also learned about the factors of pointe shoes, what brand is best, and dead pointe shoes. I also had the privilege to interview Laura Kastanek who used to dance on pointe before college. While interviewing her, I learned about her dance experience and her thoughts on different topics and questions. I cut a pointe shoe in half to show the inside of a pointe shoe and use it as a real-life diagram. I displayed some brand-new pointe shoes as well.

I learned there are three main parts of the brain: the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem. The cerebrum holds all the lobes. There are eight lobes total. Four of them are frontal lobe, Parietal Lobe, Temporal Lobe, and Occipital Lobe. These four lobes are on each side of the brain.

The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. I got to learn what jobs all these parts of the brain do. When you get hurt, a nerve cell (pain receptor) sends a pain signal to the spinal cord. The thalamus region of the brain transmits the pain signal to the different parts of the brain. Then the brain can enhance the pain to simulate the immune system. The brain cannot repair itself because nerve cells (neurons) in your brain do not renew themselves.

The nerve cells are very fragile. Skin cells die and give birth to new cells all the time, this is how the skin repairs itself. One fun fact about the brain is ‘brain freezes’ are really a Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia.

(Steh-nuh-pa-luh-teen-gang-glee-ownr-al-juh). I enjoyed learning about the brain. It was fun, and I can’t wait for genius hour next year.

I already knew that music was good for our brains, but I wanted to learn why.

Music is a possible method of therapy and a means of accessing and stimulating specific cerebral circuits. There is an association between musical creativity and psychopathology. Music impacts brain function and human behavior, including by reducing stress, pain and symptoms of depression as well as improving cognitive and motor skills, spatial-temporal learning, and neurogenesis, which is the brain’s ability to produce neurons. Music can change your ability to perceive time, tap into Primal Fear, reduce seizures, make you a better communicator, make you stronger, boost your immune system, assist in repairing brain damage, make you smarter, evoke memories, and help Parkinson’s patients. Music activates a variety of memory regions, including the motor system. Recent studies have found that people with dementia respond better to the music they grew up listening to.

Classical music can improve test scores, reduce learning time, improve creativity and clarity, integrate both sides of the brain for more efficient learning, and raise IQ scores. Learning an instrument improves Auditory processing, learning, and memory. Through music we learn much about our human origins and the human brain and have a potential method of therapy by accessing and stimulating specific cerebral circuits.

We selected blacksmithing because we are fascinated at how malleable metal can become. With this being said, a blacksmith is someone who makes tools, equipment and weaponry. A knifesmith is someone who mostly makes bladed weaponry but does not make tools unless it is used for the greater good of his or her benefit. Forging is the ability for the blacksmith and knifesmith to be able to make said weaponry, tools and equipment.

When making Damascus, the biggest enemy is oxidation. This occurs when the metal reaches a certain temp and oxygen around it creates a thin layer of a rust-like substance. It impedes the metal’s ability to weld together. To avoid this, the metal must heat slowly at around 600-800 degrees, followed by a sprinkled layer of borax over it and a return to the forge.

After melting and repeating at least 3-4 times until the metal has the appearance of a layer of melted glass, the heat is turned up. When the metal is to forgewelding temperature, it is removed and quickly but gently worked together until it starts to cool. More borax is applied, and it is returned to the forge to get to welding temp. After removal, it is struck harder, and the previous step is repeated.

The third time, if the edges are set up, the metal can be flattened, cleaned, folded, cleaned, flattened, cleaned, folded and more until the desired number of layers is obtained, and voila – Damascus!

We discovered that becoming a blacksmith doesn’t happen overnight.

It takes time and patience to master the craft.

We chose to do a project on cows because when people think of cows they usually think of milk or cheese, and we wanted to look into the importance cows have in the world besides providing dairy products.

We learned a lot of different ways cows can be useful to us besides dairy products.

Most people know cows can be used for their meat as well as dairy so we researched different ways parts of a cow, or a cow in general can be used that are beneficial to us as humans and to our ecosystem. We found that most farmers or gardeners use cow manure for fertilizer because of the organic material it carries.

We also found that different parts of a cow, such as tallow, hoofs, and horns can be used to make things that we use every day. Tallow contains an oily texture which makes it perfect to use for cosmetics, hair products, toothpaste, and even candles.

If you boil cow bones and hides you can make gelatin which is used in Jell-o, candy, and all different kinds of food. Cows also help with producing insulin. Cows and humans have similar pancreas, so we often take insulin from cows to use for diabetics. Cow parts are used for many different things, which makes them an important animal to have in our ecosystem.
