The research focuses on skilled tradespeople – those who keep vital communications networks running, manufacture lifesaving medical equipment, repair vehicles, heat and cool our homes, and build the roads we travel.

These skilled tradespeople were deemed “essential” workers during the coronavirus pandemic. They will be just as critical to America’s economic recovery, and, as the research shows, the need and opportunity to train this future workforce—starting in high school—is an urgent one.

Technology and Engineering is part of the School District of Amery Career and Technology Education department. The goal is to bring career awareness and exposure to students beyond high school to include entry level apprenticeships and 2-year technical school and 4-year college degrees.

“Today’s skilled trades education is about offering all students more paths to a secure, fulfilling future doing essential work, and it’s clear that Americans want and need this training,” said Danny Corwin, executive director of Harbor Freight Tools for Schools. “Providing pathways for young people to solid jobs is going to be even more important as communities across the country suffer the economic fallout from COVID-19 and begin to rebuild our economy and infrastructure.”

At the middle school, students begin their exploratory journey in 6th grade making a basic woodworking project where the CNC router is introduced to personalize their project. Robotics and 3D CAD design coupled with 3D printing and the CNC router give 7th grade a look at modern manufacturing processes. At the 8th grade level, students use the 6-step engineering process to solve two challenges.

When students enter the high school, they can choose classes to tailor their career interests as they form their Academic Career Plan. Amery High School offers an array of courses that provide students with the skills to prepare them for careers beyond high school.

AHS CONSTRUCTION ACADEMY Each area of Career and Technology Education offers an Academy in their area of discipline.

The Construction Academy is completing year three, successfully planning, designing, building, and selling one house each year.

Mr. Josh Ganje, AHS Technology & Engineering Ed. teacher, is preparing for a fourth house to be built during the 21-22 school year.

The first two houses were each 3-bedroom, 2-bath homes. The third is larger by about 300 square feet.

The annual house-building project is completed through collaboration with local tradespeople, businesses and contractors. Students in the Construction Academy must complete two required courses: Print Reading for Building Construction and Understanding Construction. Framing I is the actual house-building course, and these three courses together may allow a student to earn WITC’s Construction Essentials technical diploma

AMERY HIGH SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING EDUCATION COURSES: •

PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING: Students learn about various types of engineering, communication and documentation, design process, and engineering systems.

•

WELDING FOR MECHANICS: Students learn the safe setup and operation of oxyacetylene cutting (OAC), SMAW (Stick), GMAW (Mig), FCAW, and GTAW (Tig) welding applications.

•

WELDING II: A project-based class where every student creates a design and builds a metals project using skills learned in the Welding for Mechanics course.

•

MANUFACTURING MATERIALS: Students are introduced to materials and techniques used in the metals, plastics, and woods manufacturing industries.

After learning processes for each industry, students build projects that reinforce the concepts.

MACHINE WOODS: Students are introduced to the woodworking industry and build several woodworking projects.

•

ADVANCED WOODWORKING: Students extend their understanding and knowledge of woodworking skills while developing personal projects.

•

SMALL ENGINES: Students are introduced to small engines, tear down and rebuild engines, and bring in equipment of their own for practice.

•

HOME & AUTO MAINTENANCE: Students learn how to recognize and repair basic household and automotive problems.

• PRINT READING FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION: Students learn to read and interpret shop drawings, residential drawings, and commercial building plans • UNDERSTANDING CONSTRUCTION: Students are introduced to basic types of construction, architectural styles, reading an architect’s scale, permitting, site preparation, foundations, framing, carpentry, electricity, plumbing and heating and cooling.

• FRAMING I: This is a lab/shop applications course that covers the operations required in building layout and the construction of a home to meet Wisconsin State Code. An OSHA 10 training is required.

CAMP WAPO 5th Grade Classrooms Extend into the Outdoors For over 30 years, Amery’s fifth grade students have been lucky to experience a multi-day environmental education experience held at Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp. According to retired teacher Amy Hansen, the initial purpose was to extend the classrooms into the outdoors as there is so much to explore and so many opportunities to provide hands-on learning experiences.

For several years, Hansen and her colleague Donna Halverson dreamed of a fifth-grade campout. With administrative approval and the support of fellow teachers Jim Schmidt, Pat LaRue, Marlene Gustafson and Cory Otterness, the dream became a reality.

Environmental education grants, including funds from Target Corporation, were awarded and used for special presentations during the campout including a long-time favorite ‘Critters and Company.’ The Amery community has always been very supportive, and Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp has been generous in the use of their facilities.

Thirty years later, with the support of Principal Oralee Schock, the purpose of the trip remains focused on environmental education and giving students and teachers opportunities to flourish outside of the regular education setting. Often, students who struggle academically are those who shine brightest with camp activities.

Regular camp activities include dissecting owl pellets, putting up tents, completing team building/challenge activities, canoeing,

shooting archery, playing gaga, studying invasive species, cooking over a campfire, playing lacrosse, hiking, horseback riding, orienteering, learning survival skills, building shelters, and playing BIFF. Throughout the campout, students use problem-solving skills, teamwork, and perseverance. This year many students said, “Can we do this again tomorrow?” Past camp experiences included three days and two overnights which has been modified to include two full days and one overnight, except for the 2021 experience which did not include the overnight stay.

Every student gets an opportunity to try something they have never done. Teachers are always surprised by the outstanding behavior and how much all the kids love the experience.

Parents often comment on how tired the students are upon return and how they cannot stop talking about it.

Brenda Croes, fifth grade teacher, said, “It is really incredible to have ten- and eleven-year-olds shooting bows, cooking over the fire, and out on the lake in canoes with just a little guidance from adults.”

The teachers are thankful for the many parents who have volunteered to chaperone and assist over the years. It takes a village!

AIM Trout in the Classroom By: Zoe Troff AIM student; April 2021 For the last five months, AIM has been taking part in the program ‘Trout in the Classroom.’ We have been raising brown trout to be released into the wild. AIM has so far seen four stages: the eggs, alevin, fry, and fingerlings. We have learned to notice the small differences in nature like the ageing of a tree to the growth of a species. The trout started off as these little orange transparent eggs and now they are two to three inches in length. They also now have more of the characteristics of a brown trout which includes spots, brown in color, visible fins, and their overall pattern.

Students continue to help feed the trout and check the water quality. In the month of May, students will let the trout into the wild. Personally, I believe that students are most interested and amazed by how the trout survive. We have learned how to take care of the brown trout and what they need to be successful. It’s also taught us a lot about taking care of animals which can be challenging at times, but also very rewarding at others. Thanks to AIM teachers Mr. McMurphy, Mrs. Montana, and Mrs. Bielmeier.

On Senior Awards Night!

On Awards Night, 133 scholarships were presented to members of the AHS Class of 2021. Local money awarded to students totaled approximately $116,350.

In addition to local scholarships, students were awarded money from corporations, families and individuals outside of the Amery community including the Academic Excellence Scholarship worth $9,000, the Technical Excellence Scholarship totaling $6,750, and two Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarships of $10,000 each.

The Class of 2021 received a grand total of $152,100 in scholarship awards.

FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR Many of the crown jewel events of any school year happen in the spring. It is a grand opportunity for our students and staff to shine in the public eye. We have been very fortunate to successfully execute the finest of school events at the end of an unpredictable school year. It has been with great pleasure that the district has creatively organized these opportunities for our students. It has also been gratifying to know that our students and staff have vested themselves into the school experience enough to make the most of spring concerts, events, and athletics. Yet, what makes the Amery schools shine most is our wonderfully talented students. At each turn, our students stepped up and let everyone know how brilliantly successful the school year 2020-2021 has been.

The capstone achievement of all Amery school events is graduation. After more than a dozen years of commitment and dedication to life as a student in Amery, our seniors are recognized and honored for their accomplishments. Our graduates are heading off into the world in pursuits across the country. Many are headed for college, some for the workforce, a few have chosen the military, and yet a few have not fully decided. No matter where our students go and no matter what they choose to do, the graduating class of 2021, just as all those before them, are destined to make us proud. It is certainly sad to see them go, but it is heartening to know that we will always be able to call them ours. We wish all the best to the graduating class of 2021.

The spring of each school year is also when we take the time to recognize staff who we are sending off into retirement following a career of greatly valued service to our students and district staff. There are sixteen newly retired staff in our schools who have nearly 500 years of experience in education, most of which have been in Amery. As they pave their path into a future of retired life, they leave behind a legacy of service, abundant memories, and some of the greatest stories of working with our young Warriors.

They have a life lived well in service to students and education, and we wish them all the best in their days in retirement. We can confidently say that their service to the School District of Amery has been a job well done at a job well worth doing!

NICOLE (OLLIG) NEWVILLE

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND Nathan Olson earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science with a minor in Psychology from the University of Tulsa in 2010. He went on to earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse in 2013.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND CURRENT EMPLOYMENT: Olson began his career at the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at multiple locations in the Twin Cities. From 2013 to 2015 his focus was outpatient orthopedic practice with additional training in running analysis. In 2014 he began teaching online Biomechanics courses at Concordia University - St. Paul in the Exercise and Sports Science Department as adjunct faculty.

In 2015 Olson joined Amery Hospital and Clinic, Rehabilitation Services as a physical therapist working in rural settings treating orthopedic and neurological conditions with advanced training in concussion management. His practice also included occupational medicine, sports medicine, vestibular rehab, and aquatic therapy.

Olson became the Manager of Rehab Services and The Fitness Center in 2019 and continues in that position today with patient care and management of a dedicated team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, support staff, gym staff, and an athletic trainer. Olson supports the growth of the team, excellence of care, and implementation of departmental and organization-wide initiatives.

HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCES AT AMERY SCHOOLS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? “I was given a strong education at Amery Schools that set me up well to accomplish my academic and professional goals. I also saw the impact of my teachers’ dedication to helping their students reach their potential. This willingness to invest in others could be found in the broader community as well. Seeing the impact of these generous people on my life made me want to do the same for others. This influence led me to choose a profession that allows me to help others directly, and now working in my hometown, it has been a unique blessing to be able to give back to the community and people who helped me get my start.”

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND Nicole Newville attended UW Superior graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in International Business.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND CURRENT EMPLOYMENT: Since graduating from college in 2013, Newville has worked for the Minnesota Office of the State Auditor as a Local Government Auditor – Intermediate.

HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCES AT AMERY SCHOOLS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? “The opportunities to be involved in many aspects of student activities at the district was wide. I was able to participate in student leadership, sports, and other academic organizations. Sports helped provide and gain opportunities to be at every level of a team. Academic opportunities such as the various foreign language options allowed me to place into advanced Spanish in college to allow for my international business degree. Forensics/Destination Imagination allowed me to learn to master public speaking and overall, the welcoming atmosphere at the schools allowed for me to be myself!”

COMMUNITY EDUCATION **PRE-REGISTER ONLINE FOR ALL AMERY COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES AND EVENTS**

LEARN TO GOLF

July session added due to popular demand. Don’t let another summer pass by without learning to golf. After the 4 lessons you’ll have the tools necessary to step onto the course and play with confidence. Our beginner class is designed to help novices get over their fear and get on the course in a low-pressure environment. Class will cover rules, etiquette, and swing fundamentals. All you need to do is show up. We even have clubs available if you don’t have your own, so getting started couldn’t be easier! The first night will be in the classroom, the second on the driving range, and the final nights on the putting green.

For men, women or youth ages 14+. Youth under age 14 are welcome if a parent/guardian is also registered. At course completion, participants will receive one 9-hole weekday pass to the Amery Golf Club to be used this year.

Tuesdays, July 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 5:00-6:30 pm at the Amery Golf Club with instructor Gloria Lansin. Adult Fee $44 or Youth Fee (under age 14 and registered with a parent/ guardian) $34 to Community Ed., pre-register. Supply Fee $7.50 for range balls, tees, etc.

YOUTH IS ED HUNTER EDUCATION INTERNET FIELD DAY REV TES COURSES - DNR CERTIFICATION DA Amery students can ride the Summer School bus in the morning but will need to get a ride home in the afternoon.

Students must complete (about 4-6 hours) the online hunter internet field day course prior to attending a 1-day field day course.

The course is taught at a 6th grade reading level. An online course link will be provided after registration. A DNR Customer ID # is required to register. To obtain a DNR ID#, please visit Wisconsin DNR Go Wild! online or call 1-888-936-7463.

TWO Summer Classes Offered in Amery from 8:15 am – 3:15 pm: August 2 OR August 3 FEE: $10 for the Internet Field Day in Amery, pre-register with Community Ed. The online portion is free.

WARRIOR SKILLS & DRILLS BASKETBALL CAMP

For girls & boys completing grades 3-8 in spring 2021 This is a great camp for the player who wants to develop into a more complete player.

You will learn the game of basketball, improve your skills, and have fun while doing it.

DATES: July 19-22; Girls from 8:30-11:30 am; Boys from 1:304:30 pm in the middle school.

AMERY YOUTH FOOTBALL ROOKIE TACKLE

SOFTBALL SKILLS & DRILLS SUMMER DAY CAMP For girls completing grades 4-8 in spring 2021. Come to learn, get better, have some fun, prepare, and improve for your current season!

DATES: June 14-17 at Jorgenson Fields in Amery TIME: Everyone from 10 am – noon and Pitchers & Catchers from 10 am - 12:30 pm COST: $55 per camper includes t-shirt if registered by May 14. Pre-register with Community Ed.
