DISTRICT Achievement OVERALL DISTRICT SCORE 73.1.

REFERENDUM INFORMATION PAGES 8-9

The School District of Amery has EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS every year that the Department of Public Instruction has used the State of Wisconsin Accountability Report Card. In all but one of these years, every school in the School District of Amery has either EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS or SIGNIFICANTLY EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS. It is also important to note that Amery students have excelled in ways that could never be measured by The mission of the School District of a state-mandated scorecard. Amery is to foster academic excellence, Learn more about the achievements of life-long learning and citizenship. Amery Students on pages 4-6

Our Mission

STUDENTS ISOLATE DNA FROM OWN HUMAN CELLS Mr. Enslin’s high school DNA Science class recently completed a lab where they learned to isolate DNA from their own human cells. The process of DNA extraction is of primary importance in many fields of biotechnology. It is critical for genetic research, DNA fingerprinting, and creating recombinant organisms to produce beneficial products in the field of medicine. Dead cells are continually being sloughed off on both the inside and outside of the body. Recently-sloughed cells still contain their nucleus and their DNA genetic material. This DNA can be collected and, if in a forensics situation, analyzed and traced to a specific individual. The process of DNA extraction, regardless of the tissue used, usually involves the same key steps. Students swished water in their mouths and mixed their ‘cheek cell’ water with a solution to break down the cell membranes from the cheek cells, releasing the DNA. Students added ethyl alcohol and observed the interface between the alcohol and the ‘cheek’ solution. Clouds of white strands, their DNA, formed. They removed the DNA from the solution and transferred it to a tube where they could observe the DNA strand floating in ethyl alcohol. Students in the course will be using a similar process on bacteria to learn some of the basic techniques used in genetic laboratories today.

MAKINGMUSIC MUSIC WITH CLASSROOM MAKING WITH CLASSROOM INSTRUMENTS The Intermediate School music teachers are incorporating more instruments into the general music curriculum this year as a way of increasing engagement. Classroom instruments help students reinforce musical concepts. So far this year, each student has learned to play the keyboard, drums, handbells, xylophone, and other miscellaneous classroom percussion instruments. Mrs. Moskal, music teacher, had taught a drumming unit in a previous position and was excited for the new drums and for Amery students to be able to engage in the drumming circle curriculum. In drumming, the students learn about different types of drums, how to be in a drum circle, and different ways to hit the drum. Music teachers Ms. Bartel and Mrs. Henningsgard are teaching the drumming unit this school year and have been busy incorporating songs that the students already know, such as “Baby Shark.” The handbells were purchased as the result of a mini grant from the School District of Amery. The handbells are used to help students read music and play songs in a way that will give them instant success because handbells always sound good! The handbells that were purchased follow a diatonic C scale. The students have been learning about the scale degrees and how the notes can be arranged in different ways to create songs. The handbells have been a nice addition to the drumming unit as the drums focus on rhythm and the handbells focus on melody. The xylophones, keyboards, and soon-to-come ukuleles were purchased through a grant provided by the St. Croix Valley Foundation. Moskal and Henningsgard have been teaching the keyboard unit in both the elementary and the intermediate schools. The students have enjoyed putting their music-reading skills to work while having fun and learning to play familiar songs. The xylophones have gotten much use as they are used to add ostinato accompaniments to many of the songs. The teachers are excited for the ukuleles to arrive this spring and put them to use in the classroom.

What are the School and District Report Cards?

As part of the state accountability system, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) produces report cards for every publicly funded school and district in Wisconsin. These Report Cards include data on multiple indicators for multiple years across four Priority Areas: Student Achievement, Growth, Target Group Outcomes, and On-Track To Graduation. In addition, the Report Cards also measure chronic absenteeism and graduation rates. A school or district's Overall Accountability Score places the school/district into one of five Overall Accountability Ratings. Learn more here: https://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards

BEYOND classroom walls, and BEYOND test scores . . . The School District of Amery is proud of student achievement IN the classroom and is also proud of the following examples of educational opportunities OUTSIDE the classroom walls: •

An Outdoor Classroom space at Lien Elementary furnished with natural materials to support active learners with sensory needs and to help teachers provide hands-on learning, STEAM activities, nature appreciation and integration, and a unique environment for all students.

•

Career and Technical Education Academies (CTE) at the high school prepare students for careers that reflect the contemporary workplace. CTE Academies are offered in the areas of Construction, Agriculture, Catering and Entrepreneurship. In the Construction Academy, students have built and sold three houses and are now actively working on the fourth! Additional lots of land have been purchased so students can continue participating firsthand in the entire process of building a house.

•

Hands-on Horsemanship classes for high school students who are paired with horses and spend eight weeks training them at a local farm.

•

Abundant outdoor spaces on the school campus including a school forest, wetland, lake, prairie and vegetable garden. Students learn about forestry, tap maple trees, plant and harvest vegetables, manage an apple orchard, plant trees, monitor bluebirds, study water quality, practice survival skills, snowshoe, and hike.

•

An additional 35 acres has been purchased next to the school campus for future expansion of hands-on agriculture education.

•

An annual, overnight environmental education trip for all 5th grade students.

We are also very proud of our unique EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OPTIONS for Amery students and families. These programs are outlined on the next page.

Points of PRIDE . . .

Program OPTIONS for Amery students & families

All children are unique in how they learn, develop and grow. Each program below offers strengths for the academic, social and emotional growth of children. Parents have the opportunity to choose the best learning environments for their children. Amery’s LEGACY/TRADITIONAL classrooms are available to all children in 4K Preschool through Grade 12. These classrooms utilize a variety of innovative teaching tools allowing students to engage within a balance of choice activities, projects, small groups, integrated technology, exploration, and more. The MONTESSORI method of education is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. Students make creative choices in their learning while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Amery offers Montessori as a multi-age option at the following levels: Children’s House for 4K Preschool & Kindergarten; Lower Elementary for Grades 1-3; and Upper Elementary for Grades 4-5.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING (PBL) is a teaching method in which students gain

knowledge and skills by investigating and responding to questions, problems, and challenges and then presenting their findings. • AMERY INQUIRING MINDS (AIM) is a multiage, project based learning school offered as an option for students in Grades 3-5. Students enrolled in AIM learn in a collaborative project-based learning setting which incorporates one-to-one technology, 21st century learning skills, Habits of Mind, and environmental stewardship. • A Grades 1-2 multiage project based learning-centered classroom is an option at Lien Elementary. • Project based learning is also a focus in Grades 6-8 as teachers infuse PBL instructional units throughout the school year. Middle School students participate in a Genius Hour PBL initiatve, and 8th grade students have the option to enroll in an applied technology PBL class called CREATE.

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) ACADEMIES prepare

students for careers that reflect the contemporary workplace. CTE Academies are offered at Amery High School in the areas of Construction, Agriculture, Catering and Entrepreneurship. Amery High School offers a number of programs to ensure our students are

FACILITIES REFERENDUM

FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR We are well past our 100th day of school, and as always, there is much to celebrate. We successfully moved through the unknowns of the start of the school year, re-established our commitment to the great benefits of in-person learning, and positioned ourselves for one of our best school years ever. As we move through the second half of the school year, optimism grows as we see the positive signs of a full return to the normalcy of school. The Amery schools have remained in an in-person learning model for well over a year. The credit for this accomplishment goes to our students, their families, and our staff. Everyone has been committed to keeping our doors open. We are once again prioritizing, in all ways, the best of the teaching and learning experience. Not only have our doors remained open, but our school community has embraced the return of school events. Central to the school experience is our commitment to providing a wide array of co-curricular activities which take place on and off the field of play. We will soon be winding down our winter athletic season and then begin spring season practices and competitions. With the change of seasons, we also bring the excitement of activities such as spring concerts, outdoor field trips, our annual 5th grade trip to Lake Wapogasset, the fine arts festival, prom, and graduation. Anticipation is high as we enthusiastically celebrate the best of the school experience! To best serve Amery students and our community, we have created a plan to address significant concerns about the condition of our school buildings and our ability to offer quality programs and options for our families. We want to continue to provide the educational environment that Amery students deserve. As a result, the School District of Amery is going to referendum in April of this year. Information can be found on this page and the next. There will be two referendum questions on the ballot. The first question asks voters to weigh in on $35 million in maintenance projects in the four school buildings. The second question asks voters to consider an $8.5 million safety and security upgrade at the elementary school which will also provide more classroom space and additional space for early childhood.

The total School District of Amery levy, which determines the school portion of local property taxes (mill rate), has dropped each year from 2014 until 2021. The estimated increase of $1.86 from the proposed referendum would still be lower than it was in 2018 and in previous years.

OUR KIDS OUR COMMUNITY OUR FUTURE Our goal is to always do what is best for Amery students and the community. Students spend seven hours a day in school, and though the Amery school campus is beautiful and functional, we have reached a point where we must address significant maintenance needs so that we can provide the educational environment that Amery students deserve. The referendum is focused on the following: • Increasing school safety and security

• Improving learning environments for student success

• Improving building efficiency and sustainability

• Addressing structural repairs and failing building systems

This plan was developed using feedback gathered from the community survey, from the community listening sessions, and from professional evaluations of the condition and quality of our learning environments. The recommended plan includes projects at all four of the school buildings, but the most pressing needs are at the high school, which was built in 1976, and the elementary school, which was built in 1967.

WHY NOW?

Amery Community Survey Results

Amery students have ‘Exceeded Expectations’ every year that Wisconsin has used the Accountability Report Card. Amery students have also excelled in ways that could never be measured by a state-mandated report card. The future of our students is at stake – we want to continue providing the education our kids deserve. Amery families currently have the unique opportunity to select learning environments that are best for their children: Montessori, Project Based Learning, Traditional, Career & Technical Education Academies, College & Career Readiness Programs, and Early Childhood Programs. The future of our programs is at stake - we want to continue providing these excellent experiences for our students. The district is nearly debt-free. It is time to invest in our future. Interest rates remain near historic lows. The maintenance, safety, and security needs of the district are not going away.

‘THE SKY IS THE LIMIT’ FOR LIEN ELEMENTARY READERS The 28th annual Lien Elementary School reading incentive program took place during January. This year’s theme, ‘The Sky is the Limit,’ provided students with the opportunity to transform their minutes spent reading outside of school into READING POWER that fueled the ‘Amery Warrior Air’ airplane traveling across the country. Each week, Lien students were able to earn special activities and virtual field trips in places like Tennessee, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska. The program began with a kick-off event where families gathered for an evening of stories, book bingo, and book swapping. There were enough donations of gently used books from families and the Amery Area Public library that each family in attendance could select 10 books to take home. The next day, all Lien students were able to go ‘book shopping’ with the remaining inventory and select 2 books to take home. Healthy snacks were provided by Power Up. A cafeteria display included a map of the USA to track the journey, a red inflatable “Warrior Air” airplane, a reading power basket to collect reading slips, and a book display. Special activities included the following virtual field trips: • In Tennessee, students took a zipline tour of the Great Smoky Mountains and created ziplines using Legos. • In Albuquerque, students took a hot air balloon festival tour and were invited to launch a paper lantern into the air outside • In Hawaii, students took a helicopter tour of Hawaii and were able to make and launch paper helicopters • In Alaska, students took a seaplane tour of the state and experimented with model glaciers and volcanoes Throughout the program, students spent time reading books based on their interests and experienced the JOY that can come from storybooks!

Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered as a precious gift. - Kate DiCamillo

STUDENT AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS Eighth grade Language Arts classes wrote and illustrated their own children’s stories. The project encouraged students to practice their skills of storytelling and incorporate different narrative elements while also having the opportunity to make a connection with and inspire younger students. First, the eighth graders worked together in small groups to examine published children’s books and identify elements of good storytelling. The students then used inspiration from the books to create their own children’s stories. Requirements included using dialogue, incorporating literary devices such as similes/metaphors, and following a proper plot structure. The students also had to keep in mind their target audience by incorporating a theme appropriate for young children. Students enjoyed using their creativity and knowledge of narrative storytelling and then illustrating by hand or with computer graphics to bring their stories to life. Finally, the project culminated in a field trip to the elementary school where the eighth-grade authors practiced their public speaking skills by presenting their books to various grade levels.
