The sport of Pickleball [PB] - which is now the fastest growing sport in America - was brought to Amery in 2014 by two Amery “snowbirds” (Ron Skone and Dennis John) who had started playing at their winter homes in Florida and Arizona. PB quickly became very popular here and there are now almost 100 people in the Amery area who play the sport often.

Committee, and the City Maintenance Crew - the 3 tennis courts located in South Twin Park were converted into 6 pickleball courts. Those 6 courts are regularly the site of PB play, and the fun and fellowship which that provides, for individuals and families from throughout the Amery area.

Way back in the 80’s, I started a Pickleball unit in my Phy Ed classes. I found that the students really liked it because you didn’t need as many special skills like serving in tennis. The rules are easy to learn and understand. Games are fast paced so there isn’t much standing around. I found that girls liked to play as much as the boys and that the girls could compete better with more people interested in new and exciting ways to get some exercise that would be fun and sustainable.
