ABOUT THE ARTIST Pat Duncan Patricia Duncan is a representational pastel and oil artist. She found that growing up on the beautiful prairies of South Dakota sparked her passion and ignited her interest in drawing and painting at an early age. Patricia’s extensive travel and an opportunity to live abroad in England gave her an appreciation of cultural diversity and a vast array of subjects and subject matter to fuel her work. Currently living part of her time in the beautiful St. Croix Valley of Northwest Wisconsin, surrounded by lakes and farmland, she continues to nurture her love for the outdoors and finds a continual source of inspiration for her art. In addition to her early interest in painting, Patricia’s soul as an artist is evidenced by her choice of education in the arts. She pursued a fine arts degree at the University of Utah in the performing arts ballet division giving her opportunities to audition and perform with Ballet West. Patricia’s art training background started with a solid drawing foundation in charcoal and pastel with instructors at the Edina Art Center in Minnesota. To further her art education, she studied under Joseph Paquet (Plein Air Painters of America) in St. Paul for 12 years and with Jeff Hurinenko for 7 years learning the Old Master’s Danish/Flemish method of oil painting through still life and portrait work. All of these classes involved the experience of “working from life” and plein air (French term of painting outside on location). Patricia’s desire to share what she has learned and experienced with others found expression, as she teaches oil and pastel painting classes at the family cabin in Northwest Wisconsin on Bone Lake. She also offers workshops and artist retreats at her working studio at the lake. Art & Entertainment AMERY ART SCENE This little town is bursting with art, painters, potters, sculptors, woodbutchers, multi-media visual artists, graphic artists, musicians, actors, dancers, writers, quilters, and more. Besides providing gallery events at ArtZ, Farm Table, and the Northern Lakes Center for the Arts; churches, restaurants, the medical center, and our school system hold regular opportunities for the creatively inclined to display their work and talent. Classes in several venues also attract those who wish to try their hand at artistic expression. Instruction is carried on by the school through the Community Education program as well as offerings at the Farm Table, ArtZ Gallery and private instruction.

The Spring Art Tour is held the first weekend in May every year. With nearly 50 artists, live demonstrations, drawings and refreshments; your self-guided journey will be incredibly fun and inspirational.

MUSIC ON THE RIVER OUTDOOR CONCERT SERIES Amery has one of the best outdoor music events in the St. Croix Valley area. Three music events are held annually the third Friday of June, July and August in Michael Park, along with a Cruise-in car show, Taste of Amery food vendors, local brews and wines. Tailgating has become quite popular with the owners of beautifully restored vehicles....so, cruise on over!

From Cold Turkey to Turkey Red What is one of the oldest, most grown of all grains, and by far the most traded across the world— more than all other cereal grains combined? WHEAT. It’s odd we don’t discuss wheat much, being just a short drive from “mill city” Minneapolis, original “flour capital of the world”. And, we should talk about wheat. Or maybe, we should listen to Darrold Glanville talk about wheat. A guest instructor at Farm Table on bread, pizza dough and other items. He has a story to tell.

DOCTORS HAD NO IDEA. MAYBE A TICK-BORNE DISEASE? One night after feasting on pasta, Darrold had a bad reaction: inflammation off the charts, indigestion, tough to breathe. He correlated it to pasta, and from there to wheat. Maybe a gluten intolerance? So he went cold turkey on wheat and, in days, felt better.

A retired corporate executive, completely content to spend more time with family, Darrold was in line for a beautiful couple decades. But he loved to eat. And bake. He particularly loved good bread, like in Europe, with a nice crust and a chewy crumb.

But to Darrold, as good as he felt, prospects for his remaining years without the food he treasured felt awful. More than that, his curiosity was burdened by a conundrum: what had made him turn completely gluten intolerant? All those years of pancakes and hand-tossed pizza in his brick-fired oven — what changed?

Turns out Darrold took up baking and was making great products; bread, pizza dough, pastries, just like any grandfather with an apron. But, instead of realizing a kind of artisanal nirvana, Darrold got sick. And sicker. Intestinal

Darrold took to researching. And discovered a story, the dimensions of which, pretty much track the fall-off of America’s food/agriculture/production sector in the modern era. A descent into choices that prioritize industrial

processes over quality and nutrition. So that, how a product “looks” or how cheaply it can be grown/prepared/manufactured, that’s what drives varieties and processes — not taste or nutritional value. Wheat varieties were selected for lowergrowing plants, keeping the crop from blowing down or “lodging”. Yields improved, but not berry quality; not their taste when ground, nor their nutrition when digested by the human body. Older, taller varieties were tossed aside. When steel roller mills came onto the scene in the latter half of the 19th century, more bran and germ were removed during milling. That made flour more consistent and reliable for baking and sped its oxidation, so it was uniform and fluffy, but also stripped-out a lot of protein. In addition, massive steel rollers achieved higher temperatures during production, and at a certain point, oils in wheat berries were activated, or burned really, and this pushed flour down the road to quicker rancidity. Now shelf-life was reduced. For appearance reasons, to help make baking uniform, “white” flour became associated with purity and cleanliness,

so manufacturers added chemicals to “bleach” flour, making it look white. In addition to nutrition loss and early onset rancidity, chemicals like bromides, benzoyl peroxide and chlorine gas were added. And, once Norman Borlaug, in the 1960s, set about hybridizing wheat so it could be grown in different climates and conditions around the world, nutrition and protein took an even further seat behind the drive for plant viability and yield Today, farmers routinely spray wheat with a lethal dose of glyphosate (key ingredient in Round Up), so that wheat plants desiccate all at once and ripen uniformly — just weeks before harvest. Again, yield goes up. But really? Long and short, pretty much everything done to modern wheat and flour has made the product less nutritious, less palatable, less digestible, more likely to go rancid, and more likely to contain herbicide residues. Glyphosate is an anti-bacterial as well, so not only are industrial hamburger buns vapid and lifeless, they can actually kill micro-flora in your gut. But food in America is cheap. So cheap it makes people like Darrold sick. So cheap it consumes 18% of America’s GDP to keep people well. How cheap is that?

But remember, Darrold likes making bread. After discovering the story behind wheat, he identified the original “heritage” wheat varieties, taller plants with lower yields; ones that providebetter nutrition and better flavor in their berries, without pesticides. Those varieties, Turkey Red and Sonoran White, are grown for he and his wife Marty by the truckload and shipped to nearby North Branch, Minnesota. They have experimented to determine precise percentages of each type of flour in blends for different products. Ever the entrepreneurs, Darrold and Marty now own a production facility, a suitable mill — one that uses stones, not steel — and are mastering making flour forty minutes from Amery. There’s a story in that too. But, you’ll have to hear Darrold and Marty tell it. For now, best just to say: you should try their bagged flour products at Farm Table under the Sunrise Flour Mill label. It makes delicious bread, pancakes, pizza dough and more. It’s a wonderful example of how to create a local food product that is available year-round. Most important, it’s wholesome, nutritious and not likely to make you ill.

RUSTIC ROAD 28 - Mains Crossing (old Highway 8). Passing by Apple River Park and across the scenic Apple River, this route offers pleasant views of deciduous forests and open farmland.

York Park

RUSTIC ROAD 41 - Clara Lake Road between County E and County G. This road wanders past scenic woodlands and farmlands. A canopy of trees shades the gravel portion of this beautiful road.

Bird watching offers the chance to socialize. It incorporates the physical movement of walk, interpreting visual and auditory input, and speaking to other birdwatchers.

Fishing Take the kids out to catch a mess of Sunfish or toss out a couple top water lures to catch a nice Large Mouth Bass. You can fish for Class A Muskies in the Apple River, and if you go further south, you will find Class II trout as well as the infamous Pike Hole. Thousands of walleye fingerlings have been stocked in Pike and North Twin Lakes. NORTH TWIN LAKE is a 135-acre lake located in the heart of the City of Amery. The lake is accessed by a new boat launch on north Keller Avenue.

LAKE WAPOGASSET has three lake accesses located along the west shore off County Roadâ€™s C and F, and two on southeast shore off County Roadâ€™s C and F.

PIKE LAKE is a 159-acre lake with public boat access on the west shore off County Road H and Pike Lake Road. Panfish are also abundant making the lake a perfect spot to take the younger fisherman. Two fishing piers located on the east side of the lake which can be accessed from York Park.

THE APPLE RIVER is a 70 mi (113 km) long tributary of the St. Croix River and runs through the city. The boat landing is on the end of Birch Street East and also off of River Shore Lane. BEAR TRAP LAKE is a 241-acre lake, is a favorite destination for boating, skiing, tubing or swimming.

Winter Activities Winter transforms the region’s hills and valleys into a glittering, unearthly landscape waiting to be explored, enjoyed and savored. Many miles of the country’s finest cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails are in the area.

Winter can see so many fish houses that a City within a City is created. The last weekend in January, St. Joseph Catholic Church of Amery sponsors an annual ice fishing contest drawing hundreds of people to participate.

CROSS COUNTRY & DOWN HILL SKIING BALSAM BRANCH SKI TRAIL is groomed for classic and skate-skiing, this 10-mile recreation trail crosses the D.D. Kennedy Environmental Area,the Garfield Recreation Area, and Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp. Parking and trail access are available at D.D. Kennedy Park and Garfield Recreation Area.

STOWER SEVEN LAKES STATE TRAIL is a countyoperated 14-mile trail that runs from Amery to Dresser (almost). It is maintained and groomed with each new significant snow for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trailhead pavilion, built in early 2011, is located in Amery.

The Stower Seven Lakes State Trail is a 14-mile limestone path suitable for biking, walking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat bikes, and jogging. This non-motorized trail starts in Amery at Soo Line Park on Harriman Avenue and passes through Deronda, Wanderoos and Nye, ending about one mile from Dresser on 90th Avenue by Lotus Lake Park. Parking is available at both trail ends and parking lots are available at Deronda, Wanderoos and Nye.

The Cattail State Trail is an all-access trail that is open year-round for ATVs, snowmobiles, off-road motorcycles and other trail uses include hiking, mountain biking, wild viewing, and horseback riding. This trail has many shaded areas and you will see nice country. Whether it’s a 1-day trip or a full weekend, this easy ride allows plenty of time to take in as much as possible. In Amery, the trailhead is located in Amery on Highway 46 (behind the Fire Hall) near the Apple River.

Weekend Outings CANOEING / KAYAKING Canoeing on the Apple River and any one of the many lakes in Amery is a great summertime activity for young and old alike. Come to Amery’s Farmers Market for the freshest in produce from vendors offering fresh roasted coffee, fresh vegetables, fruit, canned items, flowers, perennials, berries, honey and maple syrup - all locally grown. Also, each week there are a variety of food stands, and on occasion, there may be live music. The Amery Farmer’s Market is open from June through October. Mondays from 3 - 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - Noon at the Soo Line Pavilion located on Keller Avenue in downtown.

GOLF & EVENT CENTER Amery boasts a beautiful 18-hole golf course overlooking South Twin Lake. The course is walkable, or if you prefer to rent a cart, the paved trails provide thorough coverage of the course. Water, woods, sand and hills provide variety from hole to hole. The 10th hole is a visual masterpiece, with a panoramic view and two bodies of water. We are also able to host groups from 30-160 people in our scenic event center overlooking the course.

BILL ZAGER Owner and Groundskeeper From planting the trees to keeping the grounds, Bill Zager is the man behind the tractor. He enjoys working on the variety of projects that the orchard demands. He also enjoys the opportunity to learn from long-time residents and friends who have a history of farming in the area – they have helped him to establish the orchard and to keep it thriving.

THE APPLE ORCHARD Z-Orchard is located in rural northwestern Wisconsin, just 60 miles east of Minneapolis/St. Paul in beautiful Amery, Wisconsin, in the heart of the St. Croix River Valley. The facility is a working orchard producing apples, fresh maple syrup, and local honey. The orchard is adjacent to the “Stower Seven Lakes State Trail” – an area abundant in forests and wildlife. The Orchard Store is open seasonally for harvest sales and special events, or by appointment.

BEES Who are we kidding? We all know is really in charge! By the height of summer it is over ONE MILLION bees, the majority of these are females, all workers and the queen are female! They pollinate our apples trees, flowers and many wild berry bushes and clover in the area. They also travel a distance of 2 miles normal range but do venture up to 6 miles from Z-Orchard collecting pollen and nectar throughout our community. No worries about visiting, the bees are consumed with their work and are too busy to bother with us! Come see our observation hive where you can get up close and view the bees through glass and learn more about their fascinating and important role in nature and at Z-Orchard.

Interest in the growing and harvesting of local food makes Z-Orchard possible. We are pleased to host events that celebrate our local bounty and educate visitors on the processes that make it all happen. School tours are welcome. The Amery Schools and some home schoolers have regular field trips in the spring and in the fall.
