Established in 1764, the company known today as Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat, was located in the Alsace-Lorraine region o f France. In 1846 millefiori paperweights were perfected by the craftsmen at the factory, and by 1848 weights containing exquisite lampworkflowers, bouquets, butterflies, and other m otif were being produced. Paperweight production at Baccarat lasted almost twenty years. 2. Rare antique Russian petite floral plaque paperweight. The piece displays a bouquet of twelve, three-dimensional, multi-tiered flowers, in shades of cranberry, cobalt blue, maroon, sky blue, and white, with twelve shaded green leaves and three slender green stems, which are tied with a maroon ribbon. Each of the flowers has bundled rod stamens surrounded by three tiers of pointed petals. Frosted back, and beveled edges. Minor chips along the bevels, and flakes of white glass around the lampwork. Length 4", width 2 1/2", depth 1 1/4". $30,000-30,000

D ear C o llector, For generations, auctions have been an ideal method of combining the interests of buyers and sellers. This dynamic balance between supply and demand can be incredibly exciting, particularly if you experience an irresistible urge to own something that catches your fancy. During an auction, the price for an item develops literally before your eyes, occasionally reaching unexpected highs. Often the hammer falls at the minimum reserve price, creating a wonderful surprise for the winning bidder. The paperweights in this auction catalogue are also available for viewing and bidding online by clicking on the auction link at wwtu.TheGlassGallery.com. By checking this site, you can view the current bids on all of the lots, and you can also check your own internet bids to see if you are the current high bidder. After August 10, please help us close the auction quickly by calling or checking the auction website dai ly to confirm the status of your bids. It is imperative that you contact us on a daily basis, so that other bidders are not held up. You may contact us by web, fax, phone, or email. If you are unable to do so, please leave your maximum highest bids with us, so that we can bid on your behalf. In order to better stay in touch with us throughout the auction, please make sure we have your current email address and phone number(s). You are also invited to come to Santa Cruz for a personal inspection of the lots. We would be happy to assist you with hotel arrangements, etc. One last suggestion: If the bidding on your favorite lot rises higher than you are willing to pay, try bidding on another one or two lots with lower estimates. Remember, though, all initial bids must be placed by August 10. If you are considering entering the fray of one of our auctions, here are some tips to help you enjoy the process, and to succeed in bidding: 1. T he P rice E stimates and T he R eserve

Our catalogue lists a price estimate for each lot, which includes a range between a low and high price, into which we anticipate the hammer to fall. All bidding is done in increments, which are listed in the Conditions of Sale section of the catalogue. Like most auctions, ours follows a standard practice of setting a reserve on each lot, which is the minimum price the seller has agreed to accept. This means the lot will not be sold below that price. 2 . T he B idding P rocess

You are welcome to place as low a bid as you like, and to bid on as many items concurrently as you choose. However, remember that your bid is your commitment to purchase. You are also welcome to place as high a bid as you like, which we recommend on your first-priority lots. Even if you bid above the high estimate, the hammer will fall at only one increment above the closest underbidder. Again, remember that your bid is a contract to purchase the piece at the hammer price (plus commission), so exercise care in placing each bid. Because our auction continues for consecutive days, and includes multiple bidders on multiple lots, it is always good to have a good record-keeping system in place. Make clear notes of the dates and amounts of your bids. If you need any help with this, our computer also keeps track of your bids, so call us if you need any information. 3 . T he C ommission

Oh, and one more thing. In addition to paying for what you have won, you will have to pay slightly more. Our commission is added to the hammer price. Shipping charges and applicable taxes are added to the invoice as well.

We hope you will enjoy the auction, and wish you every success!
