1 Extremely rare antique Baccarat swans on a pond hollow faceted paperweight. A bevy of two elegant white swans flanking a colorful cygnet, one headed in the opposite direction of the other two, floats at the center of a hollow-blown dome. The avian family swims over clear water inside a narrow ring of green and white jasper, depicting a grassy bank surrounding the pond, inside a star-cut clear footed base. Six side facets and a top facet serve as portals to view the intimate undisturbed scene within. Good condition.

2 Antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on blue carpet ground paperweight. A central salmon-pink, blue, green and white star arrowhead cane is surrounded by an assortment of complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouette canes of a dog, a deer, a butterfly, a swan and a monkey, which are scattered on a lush carpet of cobalt blue and white six-point star canes. Signature/date cane.

3 Antique Baccarat “Special Pattern” open concentric butterflies and millefiori paperweight. An unusual design is centered by a surprisingly large millefiori made of a central red fortress cane, surrounded by arrow canes, hollow blue tube canes, ogee-tipped red arches on white petal canes, then a very large undulating white border around a translucent red fill. A red, white and blue arrowhead cane garland surrounds the large complex center and is ringed by thirteen green butterflies, each in a red and white cog cane. White upset muslin ground. Internal flaws.

4 Extremely Rare antique Clichy close packed millefiori with mercury ring and stave paperweight. A pseudo rose, several yellow moss canes, crimp canes and cog complex canes, in yellow, green, white, blue, red and pink, are gathered into a mushroom-style cap and drawn down to a surprising and unique perimeter stave of cerulean blue-over-white. Mercury rings, or air rings, flank the circular stave. Clear ground. Mentioned in The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights, page 333.

A large iconic pink and green rose cane rests at the center of alternating turquoise blue and white curved radial staves that create a mesmerizing vortex. “Under the magnification of the dome, whirling millefiori pinwheels create a scintillating visual illusion, forming a dramatic ground for the millefiori cane. 11 Antique Saint Louis 1848 close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A mushroom has a central red and white star tube cane inside a ring of blue hollow cogs and a ring of yellow stars, encircled by four concentric rings of diverse millefiori, including ogee-tipped canes, tubes and complex canes. The outer ring is tapered downward to form a pink stem for the mushroom and includes a black signature/date cane. A blue-encased white chaplet bead torsade, topped by a single mercury ring, encircles the base of the stem. Star-cut clear ground.

12 Antique Saint Louis scrambled millefiori fancy-cut tazza. A large shallow clear vessel is rimmed by a perfectly-closed white-encased blue torsade and sits atop a six-sided flared neck that joins it to an end-of-day scramble design in the base. The scramble design includes tubes, filigree, torsades and millefiori, bursting with color and a bit of aventurine, sitting atop a white upset muslin cushion. Flower-like flared facets to base of vessel, below a ring of small printies and miter-cuts. From the Carl E. Carter Collection. Good condition.

A central white disc is topped by a painted blue outline of a stylized letter “C”, inside two spaced concentric rings of complex cog canes in green, blue, purple, pink and red. 16 Antique English, attributed to Bacchus, close packed millefiori paperweight. Ruffle, cog, star and honeycomb canes, in salmon-pink, cobalt, emerald green, mint green and white, with accents of yellow and purple, are gathered and pulled downward into a stave basket. A large translucent green stave centers the design, dotted by a fortress-like red, white and blue complex cane. Internal Flaw.

17 Rare antique New England Glass Company millefiori nosegay and close concentric millefiori mushroom paperweight. A delicate bouquet, with three blue complex cane flowers and four dark green leaves gathered on stems, is centered over an unusual open-domed, or cupped, concentric millefiori mushroom. The upper section of the mushroom consists of three concentric rings, one of pink, green and white complex canes, one of alternating blue and white canes and one of alternating pink and white canes, all supported by a stem of alternating pink and white canes. Clear ground. A similar example is pictured in The New England Glass Company, page 106.

18 Antique Gillinder close concentric millefiori mushroom with torsade paperweight. A large pink and white ruffle cane is ringed by white ruffle canes, then pink, white and blue canes and by an outer ring of pink star and cog staves, tapered into a stem for the resulting mushroom cap. A tightly wound blue and white torsade, with a white latticinio interior, encircles the base. Clear ground.

A lovely iconic pink and green rose, a green and white rose and a completely white rose are scattered in a packed field of varied millefiori in rich colors, including numerous green and pink pseudo roses, stardust, moss, bull’s-eyes and a “C” signature cane. 20 Antique Clichy interlaced millefiori and rose quatrefoil garlands paperweight. A quatrefoil garland of red and white pastry mold canes interlaces with a quatrefoil garland of thirty white and green rose canes. Their center void is occupied by a close concentric design of red and white cog canes and floret canes, around a small green complex cane. Opaque blue ground. From the Carl E. Carter Collection. 21 Rare antique Clichy spaced millefiori, silhouette, rose and signature cane paperweight. Spaced complex millefiori, in two rings, center a yellow and black bull’s-eye and cog complex cane at the apex and include not only an iconic pink and green rose cane but also a very elusive red pelican silhouette cane and a “C” signature cane. Clear ground. “Many classic reference books infer that Clichy did not include silhouettes in their paperweights yet there are at least a half dozen spaced millefiori examples containing this pelican cane.” —The Glass Menagerie, page 31.

22 Antique Clichy close concentric millefiori and roses piedouche paperweight. Eight close concentric rings of assorted moss, crimp, ruffle and cog complex canes in pink, green, blue and white, are graced by spaced iconic pink and green rose canes and focus on a central dark blue complex cane, within a basket of vertical green and white hollow staves, which extends downward to a footed clear base. “The piedouche was another innovative variation of the paperweight format. The artisans accentuated the grandeur of the millefiori by literally placing it on a pedestal. These pieces are also known as basket weights, because they conjure poetic images of a bright basket filled with ‘a thousand flowers.’ All of the major French factories produced pedestal weights, but Clichy excelled in this area.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. 25 Antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade faceted paperweight. A mushroom has a coral pink millefiori at the center, surrounded by collared white and blue floret canes, then coral pink rod bundle canes, atop a striking stem of pistachio-green complex cane staves. A white torsade, wrapped in a wound blue thread, surrounds the base of the stem, flanked by mercury rings. Star-cut clear ground. Six and one facets.

A deep amethyst latticinio butterfly is framed on either side by rainbow-colored millefiori fore and hind wings and garlanded by a ring of alternating green and white complex canes. The blossom is crowned by five spaced crenulated green leaves and blooms atop a short stem flanked by a pair of green leaves. Bidding

Initial bidding begins Monday, June 23 18, 2025 at 9:00 am cst .

All initial bids must be in hand on Monday, July 7, 2025 by 5:00 pm cst .

If you use the website to participate in this auction, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your username and password and for restricting access to your computer, and you agree to accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account. After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily via phone, fax, email or web to check on the status of their bids. It is your responsibility to stay in daily contact with us so that the auction can proceed in an expeditious manner. If you fail to contact us or if we are unable to reach you, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. If you are the last under bidder on a lot, L.H. Selman Ltd. in some cases will notify you of a 72-hour deadline to raise your bid above the high bidder’s bid. If you fail to act or respond, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

Bidding Process

Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Each bidder must be high bidder on at least one lot at all times during the auction. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second highest bidder. Bidding will continue until all under bidders have indicated that they no longer wish to bid, the high bidder will win the lot if their bid exceeds the reserve price (see Reserves). Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed and the winner determined. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the high bidder. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us of which lots you wish to drop. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to settle any disputes, determine bids, terminate accounts, remove and edit content, determine winners or cancel auctions at their sole discretion.

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. In some cases, L.H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a bid below the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots that do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Condition

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

Excellent condition: Insignificant surface wear

Fine condition: Minor surface wear or damage below the sightline

Good condition: Visible but tolerable surface wear

Fair condition: Visible surface wear that obstructs the design

Internal flaws, including annealing cracks, will be mentioned separately.

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay, in U.S. dollars, the full amount of the hammer price, the Buyer’s Premium calculated on the hammer price, all shipping fees and all applicable taxes. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days. Split payments and payment plans are not accepted without prior approval, at the sole discretion L.H. Selman Ltd. A Buyer’s Premium of 20% will be applied to all forms of payment and an additional 3% will be applied to the total invoice as a processing fee for debit and credit card payments. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress and Discover cards, checks, cash, Zelle QuickPay and bank wire transfer payments. Bank wire transfer fees are the responsibility of the buyer. No other forms of payment are accepted. All checks must be drawn from a U.S. bank and mailed to PO Box 1732, North Riverside, IL 60546. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until full payment is received.

Shipping

Orders are shipped using USPS Priority Mail, with Signature Confirmation required for delivery, once full payment is received. Alternate shipping methods are available and will be billed at cost, if requested by the buyer. Tracking information will be provided. Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $15 for the first paperweight and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. For shipments to Canada, the cost will be $45 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. For shipments to other international destinations, the cost will be $75 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. Price of shipping and insurance for over-sized items will vary according to size and weight. Buyers are responsible for providing a correct shipping address to L.H. Selman Ltd. and assume responsibility for undeliverable packages. Buyers are responsible for any additional fees required to take possession of the package.

Return Policy

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L.H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel that a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L.H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

Selman Ltd. makes every effort to describe each lot with complete accuracy and accepts responsibility for the authenticity of the items offered for auction.
