Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 Rare antique Pietro Bigaglia and Giovanni Franchini 1847 “IX Congresso degli scienziati in Venezia” commemorative paperweight. Created in honor of the 9th Congress of Scientists held in Venice, iconic and fascinating Franchini murrini canes are gathered together with a scramble of colors and aventurine. The occasion’s commemorative paperweights were offered to the scholars that attended the conference and include a large dated dedication cane. The initials “DEM”, below the dedication cane, identify the now anonymous recipient. Two additional date canes are scattered amongst picture canes of a crown, a lyre, the lion of St. Mark, a Venetian lagoon railroad bridge, chequer boards, animals, half-moons, Goldoni’s Commedia dell’Arte harlequin and pantaloon characters, rose bushes and other colorful millefiori. The cane subjects represent the essence of Italian culture at the time of the convention, as seen by Franchini. Bigaglia received awards and celebrity for the use of these canes in his paperweights, to the extent that just two years prior, at the 1845 Vienna Exhibition of Austrian Industry, Bigaglia presented a paperweight that inspired the subsequent Classical paperweight industry of France. For further reading, see the 1989 PCA Bulletin article by Geraldine Casper, page 4. Bruises to side and surface wear. Diameter 2 15/16" $15,000 — 18,000

A blue and white star cane rests at the center of a double-tier white clematis that blooms upright and crowns an assortment of lampwork and millefiori flowers gathered into radial green leaves. Clear, star-cut ground. Pink-over-white double overlay with six and one facets. “Encased double overlays, however, are a remarkable achievement on any terms. The inner overlaid paperweight had to be annealed and, when cold, faceted like any other overlay weight, often more elaborately. When one considers the overlay design requirements ... it is no wonder these intricate weights are much sought after and very expensive to acquire.” —Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows. 120 120 Saint Louis 1980 nine-flower bouquet plaque. Produced as a modern tribute to the classic plaques, originally attributed to Mount Washington and now correctly to Russian artists, modern Saint Louis plaques are relatively rare and each is unique. These nine flowers, in blues, pinks and white, have an uncanny resemblance to their ancestors, with the exception of being centered by a millefiori cane stamen. Their elongated petals are clustered in a manner that gives the appearance of fully bloomed dimensional blossoms, an observation that cannot be confirmed through the tooth-textured side exterior of the piece. Seven companion buds are scattered at the perimeter of the design, many of them peeking through or over a parent blossom. The colors contrast dramatically with the green foliage bed upon which the blooms rest and a pink ribbon finalizes this eternally blossoming bouquet. The impressive design floats in a clear rectangular plaque with beveled corners. Signature/date cane. Height 6 1/16", width 4 1/2", depth 2" $2,500 — 3,000 www.selman.com
