Rare antique Mount Washington pink rose and buds magnum paperweight. A large pink-shaded rose, with tiers of cascading petals, is flanked by two companion buds, each cupped by green sepals and emerging from a sturdy stem, and is crowned by a halo of five dew-studded green leaves. Clear ground.

Good condition and internal flaws, with rough pontil mark.

Very rare antique Millville pink water lily pedestal paperweight. Long pink vertical cylinders rise from a tall cradle of alternating large green leaves and large white petals, the central cylinder caressed by a single yellow stamen, to form a water lily that entirely inhabits a clear dome atop a footed clear base. “This rare weight is one of the most dramatic of all paperweights.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. Pictured and discussed on page 130 of Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Society.

Previously sold in Sotheby’s New York, January 18, 1995 auction, in lot 64. Excellent condition.

A pansy flower, with two purple upper petals faded at the tips and three pale yellow lower petals striped and dotted with black, perches atop a stem alongside a drooping purple bud, above a trio of serrated green leaves. Clear ground. “Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. Excellent condition.

Rare antique Clichy sodden-snow ground C-scroll garland millefiori paperweight. A green bull’s-eyes and white floret complex cane is closely ringed, first by dark blue complex cogs, then by white and red pastry mold canes and, finally, by green and white pastry mold canes. The design continues with six C-scrolls of various colors, including one of pink and green pseudo rose canes.

Each scroll is dotted with a single blue cog cane in its void. White sodden-snow ground. “A unique version of the circular garland motif is found in Clichy “C-scroll” paperweights. These garlands of canes, which are arranged in semi-circles resembling the letter “C”, are considered a signature of the Clichy factory.” —The Art of the Paperweight. Good condition, with internal flaw.

Antique Baccarat 1848 close packed millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A rich assortment of canes, including six-point star, stardust, whorl, arrowhead, leaf, honeycomb, shamrock, trefoil and quatrefoil canes, creates a colorful tightly-packed carpet where silhouette canes of a dog, goat, rooster, deer and hunter meander. A carnation cane and another silhouette of a dog at the perimeter make a surprise appearance in the design. A ball of white upset muslin, with bits of color, is visible between the canes. Date cane.

Antique Baccarat interlaced millefiori trefoil garlands paperweight. An arrowhead and fortress cane is centered by a ring of pastry mold canes at the heart of two interlaced trefoil garlands, one made of green and white star complex canes and the other of pink and white cogs surrounding a central blue six-point star. Each empty loop is dotted with either an arrowhead and fortress cane or a white and pink star complex cane, in an alternating pattern.

White upset muslin cushion ground. Excellent condition.

A ring of pastel pink and green rose canes encircles a central blue complex cog cane at the heart of a slightly cambered mushroom top with three more concentric rings of pastry molds and stardust canes in green, purple, white and pink. An alternating white and blue stave ring holds the top tightly and is pulled downward into a perfectly spaced mushroom stem. Fancy star-cut clear ground. Five and one facets.

19 Antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori mushroom

mushroom with torsade paperweight. A large six-point floret is the center of a large complex cane, with a ring of cobalt blue stars and a ring of yellow-lined white florets, and centers three rings of very large millefiori, one ring made of sawmill cog canes, to create a flat mushroom cap. The outer ring is pulled downward into a bright-green stem for the unusual mushroom. A pink ribbon encases a white chaplet bead torsade around the stem of the mushroom. Clear ground.

paperweight. A white floret, ringed in cobalt blue, is at the core of a complex center cane of pale green and white tube cogs and a ring of more white florets ringed in blue. The complex cane is encircled by a ring of similar canes, this time with salmon-cored white tubes on the periphery, followed by a ring of white ogeetipped sawmill canes, with small red star cores and, finally, a ring of white florets, ringed in salmon, encircled by salmon-cored white tubes with an outer layer of translucent green. Alternating white sawmill canes and salmon-colored complex tube canes are pulled downward into a stem for the concentric mushroom tuft. Blue and white twist torsade over a star-cut clear ground. Fine condition.

Varied complex millefiori, including leaf, shamrock, star, cross, arrowhead, bundle, honeycomb, whorl, trefoil and quatrefoil complex canes, burst outward into a colorful mushroom cap. More canes trickle down the mushroom’s colorful stem, encircled by a well-formed blue-encased white torsade, flanked by mercury rings. Star-cut clear ground.

22 Unidentified, probably Belgian, antique silver Athena

bottle. A round scent bottle, with swirling aqua, red, orange and blue, is liberally strewn with silver leafing and white millefiori stars. A smooth hinged brass stopper tops the bottle.

sulphide paperweight. Seated before two kneeling children, the Greek goddess, Athena, holds a small basket and points with her right hand, as if indicating a direction for them to follow. A spear, shield and owl are at her side and the Parthenon presides in the distance. The silver sulphide is set above an opaque white ground and is garlanded by a red, white and blue torsade.

faceted paperweight. An amber-stained base is etched with a detailed engraving of a stag strolling on the grassy clearing of a woodland scene. Five and one facets. Excellent condition.

A five-petalled red flower, with a blue and white complex cane center, is supported by two opposing millefiori buds spaced by two burgeoning buds, one white and one blue, and protruding green sepals. The blooms are gathered on a bed of leaves atop long stems. A large blue and red torsade, with a band of white, encircles the bouquet. Clear ground. A similar example is pictured and discussed in The Art of the Paperweight: The New England Glass Company, page 115, Figure 5.78.

26 Extremely rare antique Saint Louis pink rose and buds miniature paperweight. A rose, with tiers of shaded pink petals, blooms on a short stem with four crenulated green leaves. Two delightful buds, with thin translucent green sepals, along with three green leaves, peer from behind the bloom. Star-cut clear ground. “The St. Louis rose illustrated, is one of a handful of these flowers known from this maker. All of the examples of this style of rose are similar in color and set in clear glass.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights.

A most unusual white flower is formed by two large concentric white hollow tubes, one a cog and the other a crimp, around a central pink and white-collared hollow tube and floret cane. If you use the website to participate in this auction, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your username and password and for restricting access to your computer, and you agree to accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account.

After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily via phone, fax, email or web to check on the status of their bids. It is your responsibility to stay in daily contact with us so that the auction can proceed in an expeditious manner.

If you fail to contact us or if we are unable to reach you, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. If you are the last under bidder on a lot, L.H. Selman Ltd. in some cases will notify you of a 72-hour deadline to raise your bid above the high bidder’s bid. If you fail to act or respond, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. In some cases, L.H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a bid below the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots that do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days.
