Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 1 Superb and rare antique Russian flower bouquet faceted paperweight. Eight beautifully rendered three-dimensional flowers ring a ninth at the weight’s center. Each of a different color and slightly different articulation, they might be rich clematis interpretations - a flower, according to the language of flowers, that was thought to invoke “mental beauty”. They may also be dahlias, many-tiered and voluptuous, all formed around a ring of pale seed-like stamens punctuated at the core with a single white-rimmed cobalt blue cane. There are two each of pale butter yellow blooms, brilliant royal blue blooms, purple blooms and red, with a larger red bloom reigning at the very heart of the design. Eight emerald green bladed leaves alternate with the eight radial flowers from beneath, peeking through the lush flora. Encased in clear ground, the weight is cut with eight inward-leaning panel facets beveled at the top as they reach up to a large top facet. “These paperweights rank among the most beautiful and sophisticated in the genre.” —Paperweights: Collection Friedrich Bader, Wiener Kunst Auktionen. Fine condition. Diameter 3 7/8" $15,000—20,000

2 Antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on red carpet ground paperweight. Various complex canes, including the Gridel silhouette canes of a horse, pheasant, squirrel, dog, rooster, pelican, moth and two goats, are scattered across a red carpet. Each red and white cane of the carpet is centered by a blue and white six-point star. A few white filigree strands can be seen from below. Signature/date cane. In 1847, Joseph Emil Gridel, the nineyear-old nephew of Baccarat manager Jean-Baptiste Toussaint, cut out eighteen different animals he had drawn and was pasting them onto paper when his uncle spotted them. The designs eventually became models for silhouette cane molds. In 1848, M. Toussaint was able to give the young artist a paperweight containing fifteen of the animals. Gridel grew up to be a famous painter and today his work can be found throughout Europe. Excellent condition. Diameter 3 1/16" $13,000—15,000 2

3 Rare antique Baccarat four-flower bouquet with “thousand petal” pink rose paperweight. A lush pink “thousand petal” rose blooms at the heart of a formal bouquet and is haloed by a blue and white primrose, a Type III pansy and an uncommon spotted yellow wheatflower, each of which is centered by a white stardust and red bull’s-eye cane stamen. Two intertwined stems, a blue bud, a red bud and a scattering of green leaves complete the bouquet. Clear ground. “Large multifloral bouquets were a specialty of Baccarat and displayed the highest degree of skill in lampwork, and millefiori techniques.” —Baccarat Paperweights and Related Glass: 1820-1860. For similar examples, see Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows, page 75, figure 64, and Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 104, figure 338. Fine condition. Diameter 3 1/8" $10,000—12,000

4 Rare antique Baccarat three-flower bouquet paperweight. In the parlance of Victorian flower language, the primrose symbolizes youth, the pansy speaks of friendship, while the clematis wishes for luck. Together, the flowers express the desire for a new friendship to continue. Clear ground. A similar example sold in L.H. Selman, Ltd.’s Spring 2000 Auction 23, as lot 1. Excellent condition. Diameter 3 1/8" $6,000—8,000 5

Seven green leaves crown an expertly crafted multi-tiered red rose, as it blooms atop a gently curved stem, with two additional stems each bearing three green leaves. Clear, star-cut ground. Pictured and discussed in Antique French Paperweights, page 19, figure B7. “So called because of its numerous petals, the unmistakable splendor of the “thousand petaled” rose speaks of a love with boundless intensity. The blood-red color of the bloom alludes to the passion of the sender.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. For a similar example, see Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows, page 81, figure 55. Fine condition. Diameter 3 1/4" $5,000—6,000 www.selman.com

9 Rare antique Saint Louis upright bouquet encased faceted overlay paperweight. An amber triple-tiered flower, with a yellow match-head center, rises upward at the center of two millefiori buds, spaced by four-petalled flowers, one blue and one white. The flowers are gathered into a bouquet with radial serrated green leaves. Clear encased blue-over-white double overlay with six and one facets. Clear, star-cut ground. “Encased double overlays, however, are a remarkable achievement on any terms. The inner overlaid paperweight had to be annealed and, when cold, faceted like any other overlay weight, often more elaborately. Then the overlaid weight had to be reheated so that an outer covering of clear glass would adhere without cracking the original weight. When one considers the overlay design requirements ... it is no wonder these intricate weights are much sought after and very expensive to acquire.” —Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows. Fine condition. Diameter 3 1/8" $6,000—8,000

The artisans accentuated the grandeur of the millefiori by literally placing it on a pedestal. These pieces are also known as basket weights, because they conjure poetic images of a bright basket filled with ‘a thousand flowers.’ All of the major French factories produced pedestal weights, but Clichy excelled in this area.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition.
