1 Rare antique Baccarat dated star carpet ground with Gridel canes paperweight. A large red, white and dark green complex star/arrowhead cane adorns the center of the weight and is surrounded by other complex canes in coral, turquoise, yellow, violet, red, cobalt blue, green and orange, in a sea of white cogs with red and violet stars. The canes include the Gridel silhouette canes of two butterflies or moths, a dog, a deer, a horse, a black monkey, a white rooster, a black rooster, a pheasant and an elephant. The piece also includes a “B1848” signature/date cane. A Sotheby’s, New York auction label with lot number 179, is affixed to the bottom of the weight. The term “carpet” was first used to describe these weights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Métiers (Paris, 1855). “Carpet grounds, usually associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.” —Paperweights: “Flowers which clothe the meadows.”

Diameter 3" $18,000—22,000 2 Outstanding antique Bacchus close concentric millefiori paperweight. A large central white collared ruffle cane is encircled first by a ring of hollow blue lined canes with white complex cane centers, followed by a ring of hollow apricot lined canes with central multi-colored rod canes, then a ring of the same white collared ruffled canes reflecting the central cane. The fourth ring consists of complex canes in blue, pink and white alternating with aquamarine and white canes, and finally an outer ring of white hollow cog canes drawn down to form a basket. “Compared to the output of the French glass works of Clichy, Baccarat and Saint Louis, the Bacchus production was very limited, possibly four hundred or so in total.” —Old English Paperweights. “We are always delighted to come across another Bacchus weight, as it is most likely to contain something we have not seen before. Whether impressing us with the size of their canes, large or microscopic, surprising us with a unique design like the paneled carpet ground, or soothing us with an almost white concentric pattern, the large, subtle, elegant weights are a joy to behold.” Annual Bulletin of the Paperweight Collectors Association, Inc. (1999).

3 3 Rare antique Baccarat pink “thousand petal” rose paperweight. “The beautifully crafted, multi-petaled pink rose is crowned by five green leaves as it blooms atop a curved stem, with two additional leaves on either side of the stem, on clear, star-cut ground. Describing the rare Baccarat rose, Paul Hollister wrote, “The realistic features of these three-dimensional flowers are the way the petals remain closed in the center, suggesting a half-opened flower, and the lovely rose coloring, which ranges from softest pink to dusty velvet red.”

4 4 Rare antique Venetian signed Bigaglia paperweight. The piece contains a fanciful assortment of brightly colored latticinio and aventurine ribbons, as well as some of the earliest examples of Franchini silhouette canes, including seven rose bush canes, two gondola canes, two St. Mark lion canes, and one cane each of a lyre, duck and double bird. Also included are one Harlequin cane, and one Arlecchino cane symbolizing characters from the popular Italian “Commedia dell’Arte”. A large cane of a double eagle with the initials “F1” on its chest, the emblem of the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand, along with one date cane (1846) and one signature/date cane (PB 1846) contribute to the intrigue of this exceptional and historical example of Italian paperweight design.

5 Rare antique Baccarat flat bouquet faceted paperweight.

Rare antique Baccarat flat bouquet faceted paperweight, with a dazzling and rare floral group. A large central white buttercup forms the center, with a bundle of yellow star rods making up the stamen. It is flanked by two Type-I pansies, with shaded purple upper petals and a trio of cobalt blue and white arrowhead cane lower petals. The bouquet is crowned by a white double clematis, with a star cane center. A light green vine bearing a blue bud and green leaves entwines the central dark green stem.

Six and one faceting. Star cut base. A broken stem below the clematis. “In contrast to the work of the other French factories, Baccarat produced conspicuously formal floral arrangements.

These masterfully portrayed flowers combine to form a delightful garden. The millefiori cane sections that compose the bottom of the pansies indicate that this weight was produced in the early part of the classic period.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition.

6 6 Very rare antique Clichy scattered millefiori with silhouette cane paperweight. A central crimson red cog cane with blue and white star canes centers an assortment of millefiori, including stars, crosses, bull’s-eye, cogs and a single green Clichy rose, on opaque blue ground. Also included is a very rare silhouette cane of what appears to resemble Baccarat’s pelican. “This cane has only been seen in two Clichy weights. Canes occasionally wandered from one factory to another, showing up in the second factory’s work.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights.

7 7 Outstanding Clichy blue and white barber pole chequer with rose paperweight. A large Clichy trademark pink and green rose rests at the center of the design, surrounded by two concentric rings of assorted spaced complex canes including an additional pink and white rose, pastry mold, edelweiss, ruffle, cog and bull’s-eye in pink, green, red, maroon, white and goldenrod, divided by cables of cobalt blue and white latticinio, over parallel strips of white latticinio. “While white filigree separations are the rule, the more uncommon weights show twisted rods about which spiral colored threads and filigree, the threads being cobalt blue or thalo blue, peppermint pink, red, or green, the underside of the ground lined as usual with parallel filigree rods.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights.

A pink double clematis, with a white and blue star cane center, three green leaves and growing from a long curved stem over dark green aventurine ground, is encircled by a wide red and white twisted latticinio torsade. “In rare instances, the clematis appears on a deep green aventurine ground surrounded by a red and white or pink and white torsade” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Some bleeding of underlying white glass on three petals.

9 9 Outstanding antique Clichy faceted royal blue double overlay concentric mushroom with central rose paperweight. A pink and green Clichy rose cane centers the mushroom, encircled by six concentric rings of assorted complex canes including prairie (moss) canes, crimp, edelweiss and star bundles, in green, blue, white, violet and pink. Vertical white staves comprise the mushroom’s tapered stem. Royal blue over white double overlay, with five and one facets, and clear star-cut ground.

11 Antique Clichy Napoleon III sulphide on opaque green ground paperweight. A central large sulphide of Napoleon III, also known as Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, rests on an opaque green over white ground surrounded by an outer garland of white and pink pastry mold canes. The same sulphide can be seen in an antique Saint Louis weight. See Paperweights: “Flowers which clothe the meadows”; catalogue number 237.

12 12 Rare antique Baccarat red and white wallflower paperweight. The complex center cane of the flower is composed of green star canes around a red six-point star cane. Five white petals emanate from the center, each cupped within a slightly larger red petal with an upturned outer edge. Five spaced bright green leaves protrude from behind the wallflower, as it blooms atop a curved stem with three additional green leaves. The flower is surrounded by a rare garland of alternating red rose canes and blue/white complex canes over clear, star-cut ground.

13 13 Rare antique Baccarat millefiori butterfly over an orange and yellow dogrose on clear ground paperweight. The butterfly, with multi-color millefiori wings, an amethyst latticinio body, turquoise eyes and blue antennae, hovers above a stylized dogrose composed of six cupped white petals lined in canary yellow which in turn cradle six bright orange clematis-like ribbed petals, encircling a stardust/bull’s-eye cane center. It grows on a stem with green leaves, over clear ground. “Butterflies placed above flat flowers in a three-dimensional layering process were a Baccarat specialty.” —Paperweights: “Flowers which clothe the meadows”.

14 Antique New England Glass Company posy with double garland paperweight. Three diverse millefiori complex canes, one white, one pink and another magenta, are hugged at the nexus of four crenulated green leaves whose trailing stems have been gathered into a nosegay of the epoch. Two outer garlands, one pink and the other white, frame the design which rests on clear ground.

15 15 Antique Clichy bouquet of three pink roses paperweight. A spray of three very rare pink Clichy cabbage roses with yellow rod bundle cane centers. Each rose cane is of a different size and is surrounded by numerous rare free form paddle shaped green leaves and a green stem, over clear ground. Bubbles and annealing crack.

16 16 Lovely antique Baccarat clematis with garland faceted miniature paperweight. A beautifully rendered white clematis, with two tiers of carefully ribbed petals and a yellow honeycomb cane center, sits atop a pertly bent stem flanked by two shaded green leaves. An additional three leaves crown the bloom which is garlanded by alternating pink and white complex canes and others that are multi-colored, over clear, star-cut ground. Top facet and two rows of circular side facets. Very slight surface wear to one facet.

17 Antique Saint Louis millefiori nosegay with garland on upset muslin paperweight. The nosegay, with four millefiori flowers in white, blue, coral and apricot, grows from two bright green stems and is surrounded by five green leaves, then encircled by a millefiori garland composed of alternating coral and blue complex canes. The design rests on a bed of delicate white upset muslin. Provenance: The Anthony and Priscilla Beadell collection.

A large maroon, blue and white complex cog cane centers an assortment of spaced complex canes such as cog, pastry mold, star, cross and bull’s-eye, in pink, red, maroon, watermelon, green, cobalt blue, turquoise, lilac, orange and white, on clear ground. A rare turquoise Clichy cabbage rose cane is included in the design.

A green and white Gridel butterfly cane is surrounded by assorted complex canes, including additional Gridel silhouettes of a horse, pheasant/ shamrock, a dog, a rooster, an elephant, a pigeon, a swan, a goat and a clematis flower picture cane, on white upset muslin. The piece also contains a “B 1848” signature/date cane along with bits of colored filigree and numerous arrow canes.

A large trademark Clichy pink and green rose is positioned at the center of the design, surrounded by sixteen assorted complex canes in various colors including cog, ruffled, pastry mold, edelweiss, star and crimped canes, as well as an additional large pink and white Clichy rose. The canes are divided by cables of cadmium green and white-striped filigree on a white lace ground.

26 Antique Clichy three flower nosegay with rose paperweight. A large rare pink cabbage rose with a yellow bundled rod center is joined by two millefiori cane flowers: one a lavender pastry mold cane, the other a yellow/blue cog cane. The posy is crowned with three green leaves, and presented on a curved green stem with two green leaves on a clear ground. Dark lines appear from a bubble which sits below the bouquet.

27 27 Antique Baccarat dated scattered millefiori on lace paperweight. This excellent example contains a “B 1847” signature/ date cane, along with an assortment of colorful scattered complex millefiori including six-point stars and arrow canes. It also contains a central Gridel silhouette cane of a butterfly, and a Gridel horse, a rooster, a dog, an elephant, a goat, and a red devil. The ground is composed of tumbled white lace, with scattered pieces of colored filigree and segments of canes.

A Clichy trademark pink and green rose cane is surrounded by a cinquefoil garland composed of turquoise and white complex canes, on white upset muslin. 29 Excellent antique New England Glass Company upright bouquet on swirling latticinio paperweight. Three lampwork blossoms in red, white and blue, each with millefiori centers, alternate with three millefiori florets which surround a large white and pink central cane floret. Six dark green pointed leaves encircle the posy, which rests on a double-swirl white latticinio cushion reminiscent of a Victorian tussy-mussy, “Specimens that replace the central lampwork blossom with a large complex millefiori cane rarely appear”- The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies.

An unbroken ribbon of eight millefiori loops, in alternating loops of red/white floret canes and red/ white/blue cog canes, gracefully rings a central circle of white star canes with red bull’s-eye centers. The arrangement is centered by a red, white and-blue star/arrow complex center cane, all over a red translucent ground.

34 Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori mushroom with torsade paperweight. The tuft of the mushroom is composed of assorted colorful complex canes including shamrocks, sixpoint stars, trefoils, quatrefoils, arrowheads, leaf and bundles.

The mushroom’s stem is encircled by a cobalt blue spiral-encased white latticinio torsade,bordered by two well-defined air-ring inclusions, over clear, star-cut ground. One short scratch to dome, chip near base.

The outer garland of red, white and blue star/bull’s-eye canes completes the design. All over clear ground.

A cobalt blue, red, and white cross/ arrowhead/star cane is centered by a ring of white, red, and yellow complex canes, which is surrounded by a pair of interlaced trefoil garlands, on clear, star-cut ground. One of the garlands is composed of red and white cog canes, while the other consists of white and green stardust/bull’s-eye canes. Translucent emeraldgreen overlay, with a top facet, six side facets, and a ring of printies around the base.

A Type III pansy, with two luxuriant purple upper petals and three purple-tipped amber lower petals, is centered by a stardust/bull’seye cane and framed by three pert, green sepals. It shares a long, curving and sturdy stem with a three-leaf sprig and a forking stem of four leaves tipped by a purple and yellow bud. Clear, star-cut ground.

Diameter 2 7/8" $1,200—1,500 40 Antique Baccarat scrambled paperweight. Colorful segments of latticinio tubes, in blue, red, green, yellow and white, are fitted together in a random weave in a typical example of end-of-day artistry.

A Type III pansy, its two deep purple upper petals matched by large spots at the bottom of three striped amber lower petals, centers around a white starburst complex cane with a red bull’s-eye core, and is haloed by three symmetrically spaced green leaves. It sits atop a curving stem flanked by two leaves on one side and by two leaves and a bud on the other, over clear, star-cut ground. Six and one facets. One small chip to facet.

A cluster of green and pink star bundles around a feathery white cane forms the center, which is encircled by six concentric rings of assorted stardust, cog, bull’s-eye and floret canes, in pink, green, blue, red and white, within a basket of vertical purple and white staves which extends down to a footed base. All of the major French factories produced pedestal weights, but Clichy excelled in this area.” —The Art of the Paperweight Challenging Tradition.

46 Antique Clichy rare red ground spaced concentric millefiori paperweight. A large central pastry mold cane, its interior rims lined in royal blue and with a blue and white core, is ringed by twelve apple green complex pastry mold canes and then by a spaced circle of alternating white star canes and complex blue pastry mold canes in a pattern of two white/one blue. This outer ring of canes recedes into the ground, which is a deep, rich red.

Chip to lower periphery and chipping to base.

44 Antique Clichy C-scroll millefiori garlands paperweight.

A central claret and white pastry mold cane is rimmed by a concentric ring of green, red and white pastry mold canes. The border contains a ring of five C-scroll garlands in blue, pink, purple and green and one comprised only of 14 pink and white Clichy roses.

Clear ground. Minor surface wear.

Colorful frit pebbles create a floor within a clear ground cane grip, against which is displayed a blue-edged, white rectangular plaque with the name “Evelyn S. Young”. The grip sits atop a steel hilt which rides at the top of a wooden cane. A 1 1/2” long leather weave adorns the cane three inches from the top of the stick.

Small pale yellow cog canes and small pale blue cog canes form two intertwining hearts at the center of a swirling translucent ruby ground which is framed by a garland of larger dark blue-centered pink cogs. The word “luckenbooth” derives from a Scots reference to lockable stalls or workshops in which many heart-shaped trinkets were once purveyed. Signed.

Conditions of Sale Participants are urged to read carefully the following explanation of the conditions of sale, which contains the terms on which L.H. Selman Ltd. conducts auctions.

Bidding Bids may be placed by mail, telephone, fax, e-mail or on the web at www.selman.com/auction. Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission.

Bidding will continue until all under bidders tell us they no longer wish to bid. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be considered the high bid.

Bids must be made in the following increments:

Up to $200: $10

$200 to $500: $25

$500 to $1,000: $50

$1,000 to $2,000: $100

$2,000 to $5,000: $250

$5,000 to $10,000: $500

$10,000 and over: $1,000 All initial bids must be in hand by 5:00 p.m. cst on Monday, March 24th, 2014. After that date, we expect bidders to contact us daily via phone, fax, e-mail, or web to check on the status of their bids. If you fail to contact us, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid.

Each lot will close when the top bidder is over the reserve and no other active bidders remain. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second-highest bid. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to refuse any and all bids, and has absolute discretion to settle any disputes.

After the last day for initial bids, it is your responsibility to stay in daily contact with us so that the auction can proceed in an expeditious manner. If we are unable to reach you, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion, reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

Estimate Estimates provided reflect current market trends. Use them as a guideline when placing your bids.

Reserves A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots which do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Payment Successful bidders will be invoiced for the total amount due at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders pay a 20% commission on the hammer price of each item, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Payment is due on receipt of invoice; after 15 days a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged. We accept all forms of payment, including electronic bank transfers. No additional surcharge will be applied for using credit cards. All checks must be drawn on U. S. banks. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until the full price has been paid.

Shipping Domestic items are shipped via FedEx 3-Day service at a charge of $15 for the first paperweight, and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. Signature is required for delivery. Non U.S. items are shipped via Express Mail at a charge of $35 for the first paperweight; additional items in the same order will be charged at actual cost. Price of shipping/insurance for oversized items will vary according to size and weight. Alternate shipping methods may be available, if desired.

Returns Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final.

The buyer must notify L. H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L. H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.
