Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1

1 Very rare antique Clichy close concentric millefiori and rose miniature piedouche paperweight. An iconic pink and green rose is closely surrounded by a ring of maroon pastry molds, then a ring of alternating white and purple pastry molds, a ring of green pastry molds and, finally, a ring of pink pastry molds formed with a multitude of bull’s-eye canes to create the pastry molds’ skirt. The arrangement is completed with a rare occurrence of an all white stave basket, which is drawn down to a clear footed base. “These pieces are also known as basket weights, because they conjure poetic images of a bright basket filled with “a thousand flowers.” All of the major French factories produced pedestal weights, but Clichy excelled in this area.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. Pictured in A Garland of Weights, page 169. Extremely fine condition. Diameter 1 13/16", height 1 13/16" $15,000—18,000 2

2 Very rare antique Baccarat Ducks-on-a-Pond hollow faceted paperweight. A paddling of three small ducks, all headed in the same direction, floats at the center of a hollow-blown dome. Each duck is beige with yellow, red and green feather stripes and has a red bill and eyes. The avian friends swim over clear water inside a narrow ring of green and white jasper, depicting a grassy bank surrounding the pond, inside a star-cut foot. A top facet and six side facets serve as portals to view the intimate undisturbed scene within. For similar examples, see Sotheby’s, July 1st, 1968 auction catalog, page 41, lot 277, and Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 117. Extremely fine condition.
