Persuasive Against School Uniforms
Today's school uniforms appear more a punitive measure intended to deny students their right to freedom of expression. We live in a self–motivated society, full of unique characters that make our world a spontaneous one. We want to cheer our children to be expressive and to think outside the box. According to Rob O'Donnell, "It's even more of concern in mixed schools where, every day, girls see their male classmates come to school in trousers... Some girls really, really hate– absolutely hate– to wear skirts." (O'Donnell 2016). Opposing to current belief, uniforms do not stop students from being themselves. Uniforms do not silence power of speech. Uniforms are worn for direct identification and to motivate a feeling of oneness. A schooluniform teaches students to wear smartly and take pride in their appearance. Wearing a uniform at school may not be a perfect choice, but is a better alternative than wearing regular clothing. Wearing uniform helps the student to focus on their academics. Through uniforms, everybody is more focused on schoolwork instead of their outfits. Also, it makes students less worried so they can focus on their academics because they would not be worrying about what they are dressing. Student attention in the classroom needs to come back to learning along with a formal appearance. French Toast.com reports, "mandate uniforms can serve to shift the emphasis from competition back to academic performance and personal achievement". Uniforms encourage students to pay more attention to schoolwork and serve more time that students spend on picking out their clothes. It is true that students who wear uniforms get smarter than those without uniform. Examples are seen in private schools or public schools who wear a uniform. They performed better on their academic and smarter than non–uniform school. Wearing uniform at school can stop bullying and avoid discrimination. If students wear a uniform they cannot become bullied for what they dress because everybody is dressing the same thing. People become bullied for dressing same clothes that are unlike from one another. Through uniforms, there would be less bullying or discrimination against students. People would make less fun of each other and

The thought of school uniforms seems like an old–fashioned thing for many of us. Unless a student goes to a private school, it is usually not a topic brought within families. Yet throughout different countries, having school uniforms is normal. Students in schools that are required to have school uniforms usually do well academically and seem content in wearing the same outfit every day for school. In recent times, debates have grown stronger with in schools and parents over whether or not school uniforms are a benefit to the students and their education. When budget becomes a problem the school board usually decides to cut off all ties from incorporating school uniforms. Most parents and students see uniforms as irrelevant and decide to...show more content...
Healthguide.org also states that it's true that children at school that are in uniform will feel like putting more work than if they weren't to have uniforms, that they would take their education as a joke. School uniforms show that having them actually help students to have a safer and positive environment and creates a good learning environment. School Uniforms encourage students to become more aware of their learning skills. Students will sometimes feel as though they are not getting the most out of going to a public school. I learned about this opinion that people had this year when I got the chance to meet other students that were coming from both a public and private environment. I never noticed how opinionated students were until I asked one of the students I met "Did you learn more in a public school without uniforms or in a private a school with uniforms?" .
A way that school uniforms create good learning environments is by not having to worry about what they wear on a daily basis. Healthguidance.org states that it's true that children at school that are in uniform will feel like putting in more work than if they weren't to have uniforms, that they would take their education as a joke. Studies show that a slight improvement in the grades of students who wear uniforms happens. Without uniforms, students are often focused on what they

Do you think that dress codes are ridiculous these days? Do you think the dress code is sexist, or unfair. Are school uniforms healthy for our students? Let's find out! The dress code in the 21st century is WAYYY outdated, and needs to be updated. Let's talk about the most absurd and outrageous code in the world: the dress code. So, over the years, the dress code has gotten a little too out of hand. It is RIDICULOUS at what the dress code prohibits. For example, some of the things we have seen over the years have prohibited religious or cultural beliefs. For instance, there was a muslim girl suspended for wearing a headscarf, and also cross necklaces were banned. Another school dress code banned baggy clothing, and sports clothing! Oh and remember that new cute gray and white striped shirt you got from hollister this summer. Well, say goodbye to that, because you are only allowed to wear school colors. Oh, and don't even think about growing your hair out. Your hair HAS to comply with the dress code. Imagine being told that! Well, that's what most students have to go through everyday! So, not only are dress codes a problem, but school uniforms are even WORSE! Uniforms definitely do not come cheap. According to ggwash.org, they say uniforms are usually around $249! And also, a survey of Nevada students state that 90% of students do not like having to wear a uniform to school. So, wouldn't you rather spend that $249 on something that your kid enjoys to wear, something that will show your child's style and individuality. Most people might say "well, uniforms help the kids focus on school, so they are not worried about what everyone is wearing," but research has shown that math scores between highschool and middle school students have increased by 0.01% after the uniforms were adopted, while the reading scores even dropped after the uniforms were purchased. Also, according to naesp.org, uniforms make it easier to get kids ready, or save time in the morning, but the only thing uniforms would save time for was for what you would wear, and if you pick out your outfit the night before, putting on your clothes in the morning should take the same amount of time in the morning as putting on a

Imagine a world where from the moment you are born, there is a role that you are forced to fit, a society where your freedom of choice, expression, and individuality are ripped from your grasp. Although some critics may argue that it should be mandatory for students to wear uniforms, they have evidently been misled. Uniforms kill individuality and creativity, are too expensive for some, and can lower both self–esteem and performance of students in school. Many critics are bringing to light the crisis of dropping individuality and creativity; we cannot afford let it plummet any further. School uniforms destroy diversity and kill courage, on top of preventing individual student expression. In addition, school uniforms provide an almost jail...show more content...
Having to pay for an expensive $600 school uniform would do nothing but hinder their education as well as their chances for a brighter future.
According to expert statistics provided by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2015, 14.5% of American families were living below the poverty line. That's over 45 million Americans that cannot spare money for school uniforms. Furthermore, these families might be ones who have recently immigrated to the United States looking for a new start or are struggling to support their loved ones. Trivial things such as school uniforms should not be the reason why students cannot attend school or are ostracised by their peers.
Above all, uniforms can severely lower both self–esteem and performance in students. According to a study done by Karen Pine, a professor and researcher in psychology, "[When wearing heroic clothing] not only did it make [people] more confident, but it also made them actually think they were physically stronger... the students rated themselves as more likeable and superior to other students." Essentially, Pine is attempting to convey that a person's attire affects their confidence and how they perform. It is the mentality of the person that affects their overall performance during the day. School uniforms are proven to have lowered the confidence and overall achievement. Pine further goes on to state that "[when] women were ask to do a maths test in a swimsuit

Everybody that attended school either was freely able to wear what they want, or they wore a school uniform. School uniforms is a highly debated topic among parents, teachers, and students throughout the world. It has even been to the court. Everyone has either been in a school, went to school, or knows what goes on in school, therefore, it relates to all. While it may be argued that school uniforms shouldn't be worn in school, they should be worn in school, because they decrease bullying in schools, and make schools much safer. Having students wear uniforms in school will decrease the amount of bullying that occurs in schools today. Currently in todays time, uniforms have been known to diminish the amount of bullying that occurs in school. One study reveals that "Two–thirds of parents say wearing a school uniform puts students on a level playing field and makes their life easier, according to the survey of 1,318 teachers, parents and pupils. Seven in 10 respondents believe uniforms reduce the pressure on young people to wear the latest fashion, a factor in bullying" (Dunne). By supplying uniforms in schools, bullying is cut down by a great deal. Students today want to wear the latest and coolest fashion to look stylish in school. However, many parents can't afford it, so students are projected to bullying for not having these so called trendy clothes. So by wearing a uniform everyone is dressed the same. Students at schools today become friends from what they have

It may be surprising to hear that school uniforms break the first amendment of the constitution but it is very true. The first amendment guarantees freedom on many things, one of them is Freedom of Expression. Freedom of Expression is about more than just saying what you want to say, it's also about being able to express your ideologies and beliefs which are, unfortunately, hindered by school uniforms. Uniforms weren't a common thing of the past because they were only enforced in private schools. That is, until 1987, when Maryland and Washington D.C implemented school uniforms in public schools. School uniforms should be banned because they promote conforming over individuality, they increase the amount of bullying, and they can affect a student's self–image.
School uniforms promote conformity over individuality. Ahigh school student in Chicago explained "They decide to teach us about people like Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony and Booker T. Washington... We learn about how these people expressed themselves and conquered and we can't even express ourselves in the hallways." Schools tell kids from their first day of class that they are different and special, but how can they believe such words if they are sitting in a classroom, wearing the same thing as everyone else in the room. It would be very hard to believe those words due to those circumstances. In schools that have specific uniforms based on sex, it's difficult for students who identify as a gender

Today, many schools around the world require students to wear uniforms. Many people feel that uniforms reduce competition among students and bring a sense of unity within the school. People who are against school uniforms think that they prevent students from expressing themselves by obstructing individuality. Many students dislike school uniforms because uniforms can be seen as a reversal of their rights, while others agree with uniforms because it relieves the stress of choosing what to wear to school. As a consequence of the limitations to self–expression, school uniforms create a sense of equality among students. I believe that students should wear uniforms because school uniforms can reduce bullying in schools. Should students of public schools be allowed to weigh in on decisions regarding clothing or should all students be required to wear a uniform? School uniforms are the better option for many reasons. School uniform makes students and parents happier because it can make students' lives simpler, they make them feel equal and can also help distinguish students from other people and Finally, it can reduce bullying in schools. First of the primary benefits of school uniforms is that they would help students have easier lives. In today's society, students forget about the main reason for going to school which is to learn, and instead, they find themselves concentrating on their outward appearance and reputation. School uniforms don't let children express themselves – it shields who the children really are. If children are not wearing school uniforms, then, they can reveal their real selves by what they are wearing not by what they had to wear before. Despite the benefits, a few people believe that wearing school uniforms is better for children Because it's less likely for them to get bullied for what they are wearing, since they are all wearing the same outfits. School uniforms restrict students' freedom of expression. The US Supreme Court stated in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (7–2, 1969) that "it can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." Children who are wearing the same outfits cannot see who the real person really is. This altar can allow the children's peers to see who they really are. Students oppose school uniforms. A 2017 survey found that 82% of the current students opposed uniforms. A peer–reviewed study by researchers at the University of Nevada at Reno found that 90% of seventh and eighth grade public school students did not like wearing uniforms. School uniforms can make children feel as if they still don't fit in even though everyone is wearing the same uniform. School uniforms can make children feel as if they are obligated to do something they don't want to do. School uniforms emphasize the socio economic divisions they are

It is a belief that school uniforms teach students to respect their learning environment and behave themselves, and, therefore improving discipline. However, that assumption isn't entirely correct. Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don't make students better behaved. According to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today's society cannot stand the thought of someone telling them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don't earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems. Some critics say that school uniforms increase the amount of clothing that parents have to buy for their children, meaning that they would have to spend more money. Students wouldn't wear their uniforms outside of school, so parents would have to buy casual clothing for their child to wear outside of school.

Imagine you're walking down the hall, and you see a group of kids staring and laughing out you, because you're dressed differently. One in ten girls are bullied because of how they dress, school uniforms would take that problem away completely. School uniforms are beneficial for many reasons. For instance school uniforms help prevent bullying, many students can't financially afford the cost of trendy clothes, and having uniforms is less distracting for students.
. Uniforms will reduce bullying throughout schools. Even though some will argue that school uniforms don't allow students to show expression that is very untrue. Wearing a school uniform neither defines a child's personality nor erases it. A person's personality should be judged on how they act, not what they wear.
Often, the cause of cyber bullying comes from people being different or not wearing the "right" clothes. If someone looks "trendier" it makes them feel more powerful, resulting in bullying. Uniforms allow kids to learn on a more level playing field, with less judgment about clothing choices, brands of clothing, or how much each garment was. The University of Nevada, Reno conducted a study on school uniforms. They said " various benefits to wearing uniforms were reported, including decreases in discipline, gang involvement and bullying; and increases in safety, ease of going to school, confidence and self–esteem." As you can see school uniforms provides much more than a semi stop to bullying. "I haven't been bullied since our school started making us wear uniforms, and I've been much happier" – Anonymous student. Uniforms improve learning conditions. Some might say that it is a student's choice to be distracted, however school uniforms would help minimize distraction. By spending less time worrying about fashion trends, students focus on what school is really for, getting aneducation. Uniforms provide an equalness between students, and less distractions, enhancing learning. Most kids are always feeling pressured into the latest clothing trends, this is taking their minds of learning, and sometimes this results in lower grades. Getting lower grades is no small thing, bad things can prevent a student from going to college. A study conducted in
Uniforms
People say you are what you wear. Well, uniforms are expensive and are a violation of human rights, even though it's professional and sober clothing, they don't allow students to express who they are, so how are they supposed to be what they wear? People say it prevents bullying, but bullying can happen without uniform. School uniform promotes conformity over individuality. They are difficult to enforce in public schools. It is more money to pay for uniforms and normal clothes outside of school. There really isn't a uniform in real life like working if you work as a janitor at a school it doesn't matter what you wear it matters that you get the job done. To begin with, the clearest point about anti–uniforms is that they don't allow self–expression. We live in a world that is full of special aspects that make our world an unplanned one. Executing that at an early age only to take away the creativity and to encourage obedience. We want to inspire our new generation to show who they really are and to think way outside the box. In addition, there is yet another thing which is uniforms are more expensive than they should. No one uses their uniform outside of school. When a kid goes to the movies or to their friend's house. So parents are forced to buy clothes from outside of school. It is also a struggle when the kids grow and their parents are forced again to buy more clothes. That is a continuous cycle. It is also a financial burden to families that aren't able to
Uniforms have swept through the world, taking over schools, and restraining students in outfit choices. Though many people are for uniforms, many, however, are not. With a constant debate on whether uniforms are needed, I stand objectified against the use of uniforms, because research proves uniforms have a negative impact. Not only are the students negatively affected by uniforms, but so are the parents. So why do administrators put such a restraint on the clothing students wear? The short answer; they want to eliminate many of the problems that come along without the use of uniforms. Instead, more problems were created in its place, yet school boards are still blind to the cries of those against it. With a world so against change, open mindedness, and lack of freedom, I plan to examine the 'side effects' of wearing uniforms. Research has shown uniforms are very costly, does not allow freedom of expression, and does not help in the long run to further a student's learning.
School uniforms have proved to be very costly. Statistics have shown the average person spends 230 dollars annually on uniforms. A total of 1,300,000,000 dollars is spent in the United States every year on uniforms. Also, this has shown that third class citizens are "breaking the bank," for their child's uniform costs. The Guardian warns that a rising number of academies and free schools are piling on extra pressure as clothing grants are axed. As more state schools demand costly branded uniforms, poorer families begin to struggle. Many families also spend money on uniforms as well as their child's everyday clothing. This is a sign to show how uniforms affect your bank account negativity. Publilius Syrus once said, "a small debt produces a debtor; a large one an enemy." Hi–Line Online speaks of how administrators and parents believe uniforms eliminates bullying, but in its place there is a concern that students cannot find their own sense of style. In this case this can hinder how a student feels outside of uniforms. They begin to be used to 'fitting in' with everyone else around them, so when they try to explore outside of uniforms, it can be very difficult. The society we live in today allows this freedom, wearing whatever Get
Students clothing generally does not disrupt education in schools and therefore should have the right to choose their outfits. Students use clothing as an outlet for self–expression and as part of their identity. Advocates for uniforms are convinced that uniforms are effective, however; forcing students to wear uniforms has a negative impact on academic achievement. School uniforms are not beneficial to students education in the public school.

By making young girls wear skirts they must become aware of how they sit and move about. They must be conscious about sitting with their legs together to not expose any undergarments. In addition to paying attention to sitting, they must be aware of their movements. Bending over to pick something up could expose undergarments so they must think how they move for everyday activities. Requiring Skirts part of the uniform schools sends a negative message to young girls to be mindful of their bodies and make sure they do not distract men. There is an unclear division for girls between what is acceptable and what is not in public schools. On one hand, young women claim that schools are excessively harsh with their dress code policies. However, young women are also disapproving of clothing that is revealing. Rebecca Raby in her article "Tank Tops Are Ok but I Don't Want to See Her Thong" Girls' Engagements with Secondary School Dress Codes" claims that dress codes are gendered often only applying to the young women in schools (Raby 2). Many schools implement uniforms to solve this problem with the dress code. By giving all young women in schools the same outfit they eliminate issues with deciding what is acceptable and what is not. When everyone dresses the same girls cannot be labeled based on what they are wearing. With any rules, there are issues of people not following them. In this instance schools have problems with young women not following the dress code. Many Get more content
Do you think school uniforms will help your child not become bullied? Well, you're wrong. Studies are showing that school uniforms are beginning to cause bullying instead of preventing it. School uniforms are becoming a bigger and bigger problem in today's society. They are very expensive, they do not allow students to express themselves, and they are not helpful for students to try and find out who they are. On average parents will pay close to $300 per child every year for school uniforms. Students and parents both have sides to why this trend is bad and why it is good. Some students and parents think that school uniforms help students perform better in school, attain a better attendance record, and fit in easier among their...show more content...
The parents can not afford to spend all the money of the "required" uniform, so they buy a knockoff version of it. This will then make their child stand out again and they can get bullied by classmates and singled out by faculty members. To help this problem uniforms should not be allowed. They are causing more problems than they are solving, by causing bullying instead of preventing it. One of the most commonly stated reason that uniforms should not be allowed in public schools is that it takes away from letting students show their true individuality. Uniforms put all the students in the same box and do not let them show their personality through their clothes. At most schools, clothing is a big indicator of how a person acts or how their personality is. Some people argue that this helps stop gang violence at a school or makes everyone feel equal. Although these may be true, uniforms still do not let kids be themselves. The main thing wrong with today's society is that teens have been put in boxes for a very long time so they do not know how to be themselves and think for themselves. Uniforms help this because they make everyone alike and do not give kids a chance of being themselves. Without uniforms, students will be able to show their personalities through clothes and it will make them feel more comfortable and more likely to step out of the box that they have been put in.
