Nellie CURRY-BUTLER

DECEMBER 18, 1949 - DECEMBER 7, 2024

“A true woman, she’s a rare gem, her authenticity shines, beyond any stem, she stands strong, with virtues untold, an embodiment of love, a soul of pure gold.”

On December 18th, 1949, on the pristine island of Exuma in the quiet settlement of Harts, the union of the late Shadrack and Blossena Curry was blessed with their second daughter who they named Nellie.

Nellie received her early education at the Rokers Point All Age School. After completing school, she migrated to New Providence to find employment. That employment came at the Greek Restaurant and Burger Castle where she worked for many years before relocating back to Exuma to work in her late brother Max meat store. In 1977 she moved back to Nassau and joined the civil service under the Ministry of Education where she was employed for thirty-two years; deployed at Stephen Dillet Primary, and C.I. Gibson Senior until her retirement in December 2009.

Nellie had a love for cooking, cleaning, walking, staying in touch with family and friends and reading her bible. Known for being fiercely independent, and strong-willed, she was also known for being kind and compassionate and for her love and support of her family.

Nellie was blessed by God with the gift of motherhood: Livingston, Karen, Chadwin and Charlene. Although she was a stern and no-nonsense mother, she lovingly raised her kids. She instilled in them the values and principles that guided and sustained her through the highs and lows of life. Even though she was perceived to be tough, each of her children knew she loved them and only wanted the best for them.

Sadly, Nellie experienced what every parent dreads, the death of a child; Livingston and then Chadwin. While she took their deaths hard, thanks to her faith, family, and trusted friends, she confronted the sting of death with the assurance that her love for them would never die.

Nellie loved her siblings unconditionally. She cared for her brother Max after he got sick and paralyzed until the time of his demise, and never complained one day as his caregiver.

On June 3rd, 2006, after a long courtship she married Allan Butler who she fondly called “Brother Butler”. He predeceased her on the 27th, September 2015.

With her Christian faith and acceptance of the gift of salvation, she overcame many of life’s obstacles. She did not wear her spirituality on her shoulders, nor did she do things to be seen or lauded by mortals. With quiet resilience, she lived by the terms of the Gospel aided by the Holy Spirit. For the greater part of thirty years, she worshipped at The New Lively Hope Baptist Church where she was a member of the senior choir. She loved her God and was faithful to him.

Sometime in late November, Nellie was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital with complications related to Diabetes. Her condition gradually declined, and on December 7th, 2024, at 9:13 am, her sojourn ended, and she was called from labour to reward.

This gem of a woman was predeceased by her Parents Shadrack and Blossena Curry, Husband Allan Butler, Sons Constable 1735 Livingston Emerson Rolle, and Chadwin Curry; 1 Grandson Chadwin Curry Jr; Brothers, David, Daniel, Van, Labon, Maxwell Sr, and Kevin Curry.

RECESSIONAL HYMN ................................................................................................................................. “Heaven’s Jubilee”

Some glad morning we shall see Jesus in the air, coming after you and me, joy is ours to share; What rejoicing there will be when the saints shall rise, headed for that jubilee, yonder in the skies.

Oh, what singing, Oh, what shouting, On that happy morning when we all shall rise; Oh, what glory, Hallelujah! When we meet our blessed Saviour in the skies.

Seems that now I almost see all the sainted dead, rising for the jubilee, that is just ahead; In the twinkling of an eye, changed with them to be, all the living saints to fly to that jubilee.

When with all that heav’n-ly host we begin to sing, singing in the Holy Ghost, how the heav’ns will ring; Millions there will join the song, with them we shall be Praising Christ thru ages long, heav-en’s jubilee.

GravesideHYMNS

“CITY OF GOLD”

1. There’s a city of light where there cometh no night,

2. There’s no sorrow up there in that city so fair ‘Tis a city of beauty of untold; and no sickness can enter I’m told; All my treasures are there and its beauty I’ll share Shadows all will have flown, I will meet friends I’ve known when I get to that city of gold. when we get to that city of gold.

When I leave all trouble and care,

3. Won’t you go there with me to the home of the free, I will say good morning up there; would you see heaven’s beauty unfold? I will have great gladness untold, If you will come along we sing heaven’s song, when I get to that city of gold. when we get to that city of gold.

1. There will be a happy meeting

2. There within the holy city In heaven I know We’ll sing and rejoice When we see the many loved ones Praising Christ the blessed Savior We’ve known here below With heart and with voice Gather on the blessed hilltops Tell Him how we came to love Him With hearts all aglow And make Him our choice That will be a glad reunion day That will be a glad reunion day

3. When we live a million years Glad day a glorious day In that wonderful place There with all the holy angels Basking in the love of Jesus And loved ones to stay Beholding His face That will be a glad reunion day It will seem but just a moment Of praising His grace That will be a glad reunion day

”GLAD REUNION DAY”

1. Some glad morning when this life is o’er,

“I’LL

FLY AWAY”

2. When the shadows of this life have gone, I’ll fly away; I’ll fly away;

To a home on God’s celestial shore,

Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away). I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)

I’ll fly away, Oh Glory

Just a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly away; (in the morning) I’ll fly away; When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,

To a land where joy shall never end, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away). I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)

“FARTHER

ALONG”

1. Tempted and tried we’re oft made to wonder, 3. Faithful till death said our loving Master, Why it should be thus all the day long; A few more days to labor and wait; While there are others living about us, Toils of the road will then seem as nothing, Never molested though in the wrong. As we sweep through the beautiful gate.

Farther along we’ll know all about it,

4. When we see Jesus coming in glory, Farther along we’ll understand why; When He comes from His home in the sky; Cheer up, don’t worry, live in the sunshine, Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion, We’ll understand it all by and by. We’ll understand it all by and by.

2. When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder why others prosper, Living so wicked year after year.

My Mother,

MY BEST FRIEND, MY HEART, MY EARTHLY GOD, MY WORLD

Ohhhhhh mommy, the day you left me was the darkest day of life. You are my jewel of inestimable value. You are the epitome of love, a caring heart, and the best mother anyone could wish for.

My heart is full of pain and despair at your loss, you are a precious soul, and I will never forget the memories we shared together.

The Bible says the memory of the righteous is blessed. Mommy, this is very true of you. You truly lived a good Godly life. You had a heart of gold and was always ready to lend a helping hand to

those in need and feed those who were hungry. Whether it was sending care packages to friends, offering words of encouragement to friends and family in distress or simply sharing a warm smile with a stranger, you embodied compassion in everything you did.

I am going to miss you so much, mommy. To the world, you were one person, but to me, you were the world. My lasting memories of my mommy are simple: a hard-working, passionate figure of strength who never waned in her support or love of her family, and who soldiered on, even when times were tough.

As I say my goodbyes, I do so with a heart full of love and gratitude for the wonderful woman who was my mother, my guide, and my closest friend. Her legacy of compassion, strong will and encouragement lives on in me, and I will carry it with me as I journey through life without her. Mommy, I believe you didn’t die but is sleeping t in the Lord and at the resurrection morning, we shall meet again. In the garden of our memories, she blooms forever.

Proverbs 31:26 “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teachi of kindness is on her tongue”.

TO MY DARLING, My Grandmother

In my Rose Garden of memories I see you standing there

An Angel in disguise

Who taught me how to care I long to hear your voice

For real not in my dreams

I am missing you so much these days, how empty my world seems. People say time heals all wounds and someday the pain will subside, but grandma I can tell you I think they must have lied. The emptiness I am feeling now is strong. Those days that went by without you were depressingly dull and dreary. I am in my rose garden of memories, and I know you will always be for though you are gone from this mortal world, but in my heart you will always be there.

I LOVE YOU Grandma,

Your loving Granddaughter Tremaine

TO MY BELOVED GRAMMY,

NellieCurry

In a garden full of moments and memories I’ve spent with you for the past 13 years. You’ve taught me how to embrace myself and to not be afraid as I walk through valleys of life and even though you are gone you will still be with me always and forever in spirit. I will miss the moments we spent together, every time I came to the island of Nassau as we rode up and down. Nothing will be the same without you, birthdays, holidays, Christmas, but I pray they will.

(ps. Happy heavenly birthday . . Love u.

Your loving grandson “MJ”

I WOULDN’T BE THE MAN I AM TODAY IF WEREN’T FOR

MyGrandma.

I will always be grateful for her presence. All the countless times she’s came thru for me as a child and an adult. Sadly, she’s passed away, but I am grateful to know that she’s lived a full life. I was blessed to have been chosen to be her grandchild.
