Leonard

Roosevelt Stuart

March 14, 1955 - January 10, 2023

Sorrow fills our hearts, a sorrow that is deep and personal as our devoted father, husband, brother, community leader, and friend, Leonard Roosevelt Stuart, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, in Bimini, Bahamas, at the age of 67. Leonard’s death is a profound loss not only to his family, but to everyone who has ever met him.

Leonard was the eighth child born to Wilmore and Inez (Levarity) Stuart on Monday, March 14, 1955, in Bailey Town, Bimini, Bahamas. His parents knew he was born to be a leader, so they named him in honor of two great leaders, Bishop Paul Leonard Hagarty (Bahamas) and President Franklin D. Roosevelt (United States). Because of his childhood bravery, he was nicknamed ‘Brave” from the meaning of his name Leonard (Brave Lion).

Christianity and education were priorities in the Stuart’s household. Therefore, Leonard’s path to Christianity began early with his baptism at Holy Name Catholic Church in Bailey Town, Bimini. Since his grand-parents and parents were the first converts to Catholicism on the island, and his grandfather, John Levarity, established the Catholic community on the island of Bimini in 1941, it was expected that all the children would become devoted Catholics. He was a loyal Catholic

who dedicated his time and resources to the church as the Eucharistic Minister/Lector at Holy Name Catholic Church in Bimini. Leonard’s early education began at Holy Name Catholic School, founded by his maternal grand-mother, Rosamond (Francis) Levarity in 1943. Later, he attended Aquinas Catholic High School in Nassau, Bahamas. His love and proficiency in sports, gained him an athletic scholarship to Miami Dade College, where he earned his associate degree. Upon graduation, he was offered a scholarship (first Bahamian student athlete) to St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina, under the guidance and mentorship of Coach George Williams. There he earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education.

Oftentimes, Leonard would reminisce about his childhood and the impact of losing his father at the age of eight. “That was devastating to the family and especially for me, I missed the

LEONARD ROOSEVELT STUART 3

fond times spent fishing and raising pigs to care for the family of ten children.” Leonard cherished his modest beginnings and spoke of it with pride, because he felt that it kept humble. He loved life and took nothing or no one for granted. He credits his success and strong family values to his siblings and the “village” of relatives who helped to raise him after his father’s death. He knew he was destined for greatness and oftentimes said, “I always knew what my true purpose in life was going to be. I was never afraid to make a change – to take a risk, or fail and let my family down. My parents gave me two great names, Leonard means Brave Lion and Stuart means Keeper of the Estate and I held them with high esteem”.

Then he found true love: Being the distinquished gentleman that he was, it was on the island of Grand Bahama, 43 years ago, Leonard met the love of his life, his best friend, his confidant and biggest cheer-leader; the one he said that will become his wife at his introduction. It was not an easy task for him to be Brave because he had a hardnose Police Officer to convince to ask for the hand of his only daughter, Ingrid Tynes. One of the hardest task Leonard had to face in life and after 5 years of courting, his mission was finally accomplished. Leonard and Ingrid were married on August 11, 1984 and was blessed with two sons. He was devoted to his wife Ingrid (38 years) and sons, Lenville and Akeem. Leonard’s small immediate family was molded with love and respect. He was a handson father and grand-father. A man who romanced his wife endlessly. “Leonard was my rock, my strength. “When I got upset, he stayed calm. When I was worried, he said it would be ok. When I wasn’t sure what to do, he figured it out, although we had 43 great years together, it was just not enough time, but I thank God and I am grateful for every minute”, his wife Ingrid expressed at his passing.” Despite his many accolades, none was more important or took priority over being the best husband, father, grand-father, brother, nephew, uncle, godfather and friend. He was completely dedicated to his family. His granddaughter Mariah, was the “Apple of His Eyes” and the feeling was certainly reciprocated. Leonard was a doting Papa and constantly shared stories of Mariah to everyone he met.

Leonard was a consummate professional who was recognized for his strong moral values, astounding leadership, innovative abilities, generosity, and deep sense of community. To say Leonard was a good man, is an understatement. Leonard Roosevelt Stuart was a phenomenal human being, who made a positive difference in all the lives he touched. He spent his life serving others with patience, diligence, and selflessness.

Leonard was a man of many facets. Humanitarian, Leader, Innovator, Community Advocate, Educator, and Athlete are a few titles he garnered through his life’s work. A thoughtful man by nature, he took family, service, and community to the heart of his existence. His pursuits connected communities throughout Florida the Bahamas, and beyond.

RELIGIOUS LIFE

Leonard was held in high esteem by everyone and always made his presence felt when he was in the company of people, because of his self-confidence, knowledge, and honesty. He was devoutly committed to his Catholic faith and grew up within the church and school, Holy Name Catholic Church in Bimini, founded by his grandparents, John and Rosa Francis Levarity. He became involved in many of the church’s auxiliaries and ministries. Leonard was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bahamas as well as Hollywood,

Florida. He remained active in Holy Name Catholic Church even after moving to Florida. He continued to be the lead fundraiser for the church and led efforts to refurbish edifice of the church. His last fund-raising effort resulted in the donation of furnishing of the pews. Simultaneously, he maintained membership and choir membership at St. Phillips Catholic Church in Opa-Locka, Florida.

COMMUNITY LIFE

Brave was a pillar of the communities in which he lived. He conducted green space revitalizations in the communities as privately and humbly as possible. Oftentimes, he used his own resources to steward environment preservation in the communities. Most of his adult life was spent as the “de facto” manager/groundskeeper/ fundraising for the Bay Front Park in Bimini, Bahamas which he considered his life’s worth. Brave was committed to making The Bahamas better and invested his time and energy into the future of our beautiful islands. His last act of altruism was spent reviving the green space in his community of Bimini.

He connected communities through innovative ideas and outreach, by empowering people to be stewards of their resources and talents. Involvement and expertise in a wide range of pursuits was his true nature and gave meaning to his nickname, Brave. He absolutely excelled at everything he put his attention to. With a personal mantra of, “Failure is not an option,” we can see that he lived by his words. His legacy lives and breathes kindness, bravery, and unselfishness.

In addition to his participation in church, professional and sporting organizations, he played leading roles in the Progressive Liberal Party (at constituency branch level and as a Stalworth Councilor), and Past Master, Pride of Bimini#12, Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, Annual Bimini Native Fishing Tournament, Bimini Regatta, Glenda’s Annual Road Race and the B.U.B Bimini Drinking (Community Outreach Group) Team, Bimini Sporting Council (Executive Member, Public Relations). He was truly an outstanding community organizer with a caring personality, who made a remarkable contribution to the communities he represented.

THE MARATHON CONTINUES (Sporting Community)

Leonard Stuart was an avid athlete. He excelled in Basketball, Baseball/Softball, Cross Country, and Track and Field. His success led him to achieving athletic scholarships upon graduation from Aquinas College (Nassau) to Miami Dade College (Coach Roosevelt Richardson) and St. Augustine’s University where he ran for George “Pup” Williams, former U.S. Olympic Track & Field Head Coach.

Leonard was a certified teacher and leader who was empathetic, kind, and created opportunities for others. After graduating college, he relocated to The Bahamas where he worked at Mary Star of The Sea Freeport and Bimini Public School, as a teacher and coach. He introduced cross country to Grand Bahama and also served as the first Bahamian President of the PE Association of Grand Bahama. His professional coaching pursuits later led him to the Broward County Public School system. He also served as the Track and Field and CrossCountry Coach at Western High School (Davie, FL).

LEONARD ROOSEVELT STUART 5

Brave was a passionate sports enthusiast, especially for his beloved Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Miami Hurricanes, and Miami Marlins. You could not ignore his love for the Dolphins. His garage bore the unique colors of aqua and orange along with the logo of their helmet.

Brave spearheaded the Bimini Sporting Council and was presently the Chairman representing the Bimini and Berry Islands Teams for the Bahamas Games 50 years of Independence celebrations. In 1991, he became a Global Ambassador for the No Bats Baseball Club, a non-profit group, dedicated to promoting charity and goodwill through baseball. He was an integral part of the annual Larry Little Legends Golf Classic, Miami, Florida, volunteering for the past 15 years. He was always willing to share his ideas and information and was passionately interested in making life better for others.

AMBASSADOR

Brave’s favorite phrase was, “There is no place in the world like Bimini.” He reveled in the fact that he was from Bimini and would introduce himself at presentations saying. “I hail from BIMINI “The Gateway to the Bahamas, 7 miles long, 1,000 miles sweet.” Therefore, it was not surprising when he transitioned into a career with The Bahamian Ministry of Tourism, upon retiring from teaching and coaching in 2003. He became a phenomenally successful tourism representative as he garnered progressively senior roles. He worked with passion, integrity, and energy. As District Manager of The Bahamas Tourist Office in Plantation, Florida, he contributed significantly to the success of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, Naples Golf Tournament, and EAA Airventure Osh Kosh. He headed the efforts to erect the bust of Martin Luther King in the Bonefish Creek in Bimini, Bahamas – where King spent time writing and reflecting. His “enthusiasm and progressive leadership was a source of enrichment” to all members of the team and won him the USA Sales Team Award. Brave had the vision and ability to make things happen, for the benefit of his family, country, church, alma mater, and community. He was stern but fair, overly active but very engaged, but most of all, he was the peoples’ person. Other areas of excellence in leadership included: Sports Tourism and Recreation Management (Aviation, Fishing, Boating).

REACHING THE ENDZONE

As Albert Einstein said, “The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.” In one word Leonard “Brave” Stuart, was a man who gave. He was a methodical thinker, a visionary who was brilliant, innovative, and creative. “Leonard could make a millionaire feel like one of the boys, and he could make one of the boys feel like a millionaire; because of how he treated people.” Jeffrey Davis, 2023.

People who met him never forgot him as he was altruistic, optimistic, energetic and a man of his word. Bimini was his heart, and he gave it his best. The legacy of the life he lived might be summed up in a few words: he was sincere, he was earnest, he was loyal. Our sorrow is lessened only slightly with the comforting thought that we had the privilege to know him.

(Blessing with Holy Water)

Priest: I bless + the body of Leonard Roosevelt with the holy water that recalls baptism into Christ of which St. Paul writes: “All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death.” By baptism into His death we were buried together with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.

Entrance Hymn .............................................................. “Guide Me O thou Great Redeemer” (First two verses)

Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, pilgrim though this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore.

LEONARD ROOSEVELT STUART 8

Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fiery cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through; strong Deliverer, be thou still my Strength and Shield.

(In remembrance of our baptismal garments a white pall over the remains of Leonard Roosevelt)

GRAVESIDE HYMNS

“FARTHER ALONG”

Tempted and tried will oft’ me to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long; While there are others living about us, Never molested, though in the wrong.

Farther along we’ll know more about it. Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up my brother live in the sunshine

We’ll understand it all by and by.

When death has come and taken our loved ones Leaving our homes so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder how others prosper Living so wicked year after year.

Often I wonder why I must journey

Over a road so rugged and steep; While there are others living in comfort, While with the lost I labor and weep.

Faithful ‘til death, said our loving Master, A few more days labor and wait; Toils of the road will then be as nothing, As we sweep through the beautiful gates.

When we see Jesus coming in glory; When He comes from His home in the sky; Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion.

We’ll understand it all by and by.

“IT’S ALRIGHT NOW”

There was a time I traveled

A lonely sinful road

Beneath a heavy burden bending low

But now all things are different

For Jesus took my load

It's alright now I'm His I know

It's alright now

For I am in my Savior's care

It's alright now

My Savior hears and answers prayer

He'll walk beside me

'Til I climb the heav'nly stair

And ev'rything is alright now

A-down a lonely pathway

Without a friend to guide

I walked in sin and sorrow all alone

'Til Jesus came and found me

And drew me to His side

It's alright now for I'm His own

No more in sin I wander

No more in darkness roam

The Lord has placed

My feet on higher ground

Each day new heights I'm gaining

My soul is nearing home

It's alright now I'm heaven bound

LEONARD ROOSEVELT STUART 13

“GLAD REUNION DAY”

There will be a happy meeting in heaven I know

When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below

Gather on the blessed hilltops with hearts all aglow

That will be a glad reunion day

Glad day (that will be a happy day yes), a wonderful day

Glad day (that will be a happy day yes), a glorious day

There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay

That will be a glad reunion day

When we live a million years in that wonderful place

Basking in the love of Jesus beholding His face

It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace

That will be a glad reunion day

Repeat Chorus (x2)

“BECAUSE HE LIVES”

God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus, He came to love, heal and forgive; He lived and died to buy my pardon, An empty grave is there

To prove my Saviour lives!

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone;

Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living

Just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a new-born baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives;

But greater still the calm assurance

This child can face uncertain days, Because He lives.

And then one day I’ll cross the river, I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;

And then as death gives way to victory

I’ll see the light of glory, And I’ll know He lives.

1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-8

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Nothing Ever Loved is LostMy final Love Letter to

My Husband

WHY DO I LOVE YOU SO MUCH?

Because you’re a part of so many of my favorite memories and you’re at the center of my most important dreams…. Because I trust you more than anyone in the world to listen, to help me through, to remind me how to laugh when times are trying….Why do I love you so much? Because I can’t imagine what life would be like with love…. And I can’t imagine what love would be like without you.

Leonard, I still have a lot to be grateful for, but what I’m most grateful for is you… for your tenderness, your soft caress, the beauty of your smile… for being beautiful on the inside, too… so sensitive, so kind and so loving. I’m grateful for the gift of your devotion, your protection - the way you cared about me, believed in me, and inspired me to be a strong and brave person… a woman who looked forward to all the days of each new year because I can spend them appreciating you and loving you.

Leonard, you were a man who knew and accepted me – whose love has made so many things right. My knight in shining armor like I always told you. My King. A man who loved well….. his children, (Lenville and Akeem), his grand-daughter (Mariah), his church (Holy Name Catholic Church) his country (The Bahamas) and his and my family (Hanna, Heastie, Tynes).

I don’t know what I did to deserve a life this good. But I do know what was at the heart of it… YOU. So many times we say thank you to each other with the last only being days before your passing. I want to say thank you for the wonderful 43 years that we have spent together and for the 38 years of a blessed marriage. You left us with memories that will last forever. A Tribute to the Brave One

My Dad

To my Dad, I entered this world as a Champion and thus he gave me the nickname, Champy. I was his first born, the seed that he saw to be a winner, a leader, a legend. My entire life, I didn’t have to look very far for a role model. It was always you, my Dad. Early on as a little kid I wanted to be exactly like you. From sports, to serving on our church altar, to joining you at the lodge events, I became your shadow. As I grew and developed my own personality, people would sometimes say “You’re not like Brave”. It was at an early age that I realized that I could never be you, since the example and standard you set as a person is something that would be difficult for me to achieve.

Dad, you were the hardest working and most passionate person I’ve ever met. Dad, you were so dedicated to this family and in fact your entire family. There was never a time that I called and you didn’t answer or was not there for me. You taught me how to dribble a ball, play football and baseball, ride a bike, drive a car, fish, to be a man but most importantly how to love and to give back to your community. You did all those things and more with pride that I would see the twinkle in your eyes when you would introduce me as your son to any and every one you knew. I have no regrets, as I was always able to spend a lot of time with you and was able to soak up how to be a father to my own daughter, just like you were to me. Now that you have transitioned to another home, I know you will always be my guardian angel, looking down and coaching me to continue to do the right things. I love you dad and I’ll always be your proud and grateful son,

YOUR CHAMPY. (LENVILLE)

Dad I Miss My

To say I loved my dad would be an understatement - and to say I’m going to miss him would be an even greater under-statement. I cannot begin to imagine not having to talk to my dad every-day and at the beginning of this year Dad said I should call home twice a day. I also cannot imagine you not driving me back and forth to Daytona Beach, taking me shopping for my supplies and all the lunch and dinner stops along the way, just the two of us. You were always quick to hug us and say that you love us, these things I will miss the most. Dad, you were always there for everyone and sometimes did too much for others, when we just wanted you just for ourselves. You were a loving father, a hard-worker and most of all a GREAT person. Your encouragement that I can do anything gave me the strength to do a lot of things. Words can never express the love and care I have for you. I will always love and miss you until we meet again

TRIBUTE TO MY Brother

Losing a family member is painful — finding the right words when someone dies is difficult. When a brother-in-law dies, a part of your family is broken because he has become a brother. Like a brother, Leonard has always been there for me and my family for every special memory and every success. You touched so many lives with your kindness, caring and loving nature. We have been blessed to have shared amazing memories with such an incredible person. You will surely be missed.

DEAR UNCLE BRAVE,

When I think of your name I hear, guidance, hardworking, and generous.

You are a role model to so many people including myself. You are always there to help out when someone is in need. You are a bright light in the eyes of so many people and I’ll never forget you.

LOVE ALEXIO

Thank you for giving me guidance whenever I need your advice. You’re always there to lend a helping hand I know that I can always count on you, and I thank you for everything that you have done for me.

A Farewell TRIBUTE TO LEONARD ‘ BRAVE’ STUART

My nephew Leonard, you were so generous, warm, kind hearted and caring. You were fun to be with and I enjoyed sharing laughter, dreams and conversations.

You had a wonderful way of making people feel special and loved by the kind and thoughtful things you did. You showed me that no matter how much the world and people change the important things will always remain the same. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. I shall always remember the last sentence you said to me “I love you and goodbye”.

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR OUR FAREWELL UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

Beloved Brother

Today, we pay tribute to the one who has paved the way for many of us and has left his footprints here on the island pf Bimini, the entire Bahamas, and the world. To some, he was known as Lenny or Len, but to most, he was simply “BRAVE” a fearless, relentless leader, a man of integrity, a dependable and dedicated worker, a person who loved God and his beloved Holy Name Catholic Church. But to us, he was our brother.

Leonard is the eighth child, born to the union of Willmore and Inez Levarity-Stuart. Mom would say, he was different from birth. You see, regardless of the circumstances, he was never tempted to swear – like the rest of us. Mom’s most fervent wish was always that she wished Dad left us something other than the ability to swear. Brave was different, regardless of his travels or commitments, you would find him in a Catholic church, because he not only talked the talk, he walked it.

Part of his difference is the fact that he was a no-nonsense person. It was no surprise when he became a teacher. He led by example and his attention to details was unparalleled. Brave was able to connect with people, no matter their background, educational level, or social status. He made everyone feel comfortable with a sense of belonging. He was empathetic and caring. We would often say, “Brave never met a stranger.” He was fully truly a people person.

As a college student, I benefitted immensely from being his younger brother. His fellow classmates and coaches took care of me and made the transition and time at St. Augustine University much bearable. His kindness and thoughtfulness was never forgotten, and I was the beneficiary of all he did-some I must say I didn’t really

deserve. As a freshman, I did not have an identify because I was not Walter. I was simply “Bimini’s Brother” ad with that, came an array of protectors who did not ever want to disappoint him.

To use a football analogy, because we are all aware, Brave ate and slept Miami Dolphins football. He was our Quarterback. And in football, a team is only as good as its quarterback. He was the “go to guy” who solved all the problems and made things easier for everyone. For these reasons, today’s service is very difficult because we are meeting without the guidance and input of our leader. Brave was our fearless leader who planned all events and executed all plans effortlessly. This void has been and will continue to exist as we struggle to fill that position in the family. The past weeks have been extremely difficult as everyone is recognizing the important role “BRAVE” played in our lives – family, the church, professional associates, civic organizations, and everyone he met. Brave was a man of his words and when he said, “I got it,” he meant it was done.

Brave, your sudden passing rocked this family, to the core. This will continue to impact us for the rest of our lives. However, as we struggle to come to grips with your passing, we will continue to support your family and each other, just as you would have expected us to do.

We love you Bro and you will forever be in our hearts!

“LOVE FOR LEONARD”

Leonard “Brave” Stuart has been my “brother” for more than 40 years, when he and my best friend Ingrid began dating back in Freeport, Grand Bahama in 1979.

Leonard was a serious young man, determined to make a good life with Ingrid. And so, he did - he was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his family, church and community were important to Leonard. I’ve never met a prouder native son than Leonard! His commitment to Bimini was tireless!

No tribute to Leonard would be complete without mentioning his passion for the Miami Dolphins! He truly should be in their Hall of Fame for Most Devoted Fan!

My heart is heavy at the thought of saying bye to Leonard, but I, like each of you here, take comfort in the wonderful memories I have of our times together.

Leonard’s legacy will live on in his beautiful family.

Ingrid, Lenville, Akeem and Mariah, the love we have for Leonard is wrapping you in a double warm embrace forever.

Love,

MONICA MORTIMER

January 30, 2023,

Mrs. Ingrid Stuart Bimini, Bahamas

Dear Mrs. Stuart,

Condolences Leonard ‘Brave’ Stuart

The Bahamas Games Secretariat is deeply saddened with passing of your dear husband Leonard Roosevelt “Brave” Stuart. He will be greatly missed for his countless contributions to the development of sports across the length and break of The Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

Sports by no means was “Brave’s” only strength of involvement. He was a deeply religious man serving diligently in church functions; he was instrumental in college/universit y placement of deserving students-athletes; he was a community builder, taking great pride in renovation and construction of parks, playgrounds and facilities; and he was also an activist that constantly lobbied for support as a humanitarian.

The Bahamas Games Secretariat is particularly grateful to you and your family for sharing Leonard with us. It must be pointed out his place in history: he was one of the founding fathers of the Bahamas Games: having serve on the very first Bahamas Games Bimini Sport Council formed in 1987, of cause the originally Bahamas Games took placing 1989. Since he has played a significant role in all five (v) previous Games. Lately, he accepted the post as Deputy Chairman on the Bimini Sports Council for the upcoming 2023 Bahamas Golden Jubilee Games to be held in July 7-15 this year. Leonard ‘Brave’ Stuart worked seamlessly, diligently, and prodigiously, in support of these games.

The Bahamas Games Secretariat extends its condolence to “Brave” extended family, the Bimini sporting community, his friends and colleagues.

Mrs. Stuart, you and your family abound in the Secretariat’s prayers doing these most trying time. May “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,” comfort your heart along with the rest of the family.

Warm regards!

BRAVE. SHOWED. UP.

Leonard Stuart and I became friends thirty-two years ago. We met the same way he befriended all who arrived in Bimini to hide out or chase bonefish on Ansil’s handmade boat: Brave showed up. Reliability was his hallmark trait. Three decades of friendship, one constant: Brave. Showed. Up.

The morning he climbed the creaky steps and knocked on my door at The Compleat Angler—the most exquisitely perfect hotel in the history of history—I stumbled over and answered, bleary-eyed and hung over. It wasn’t my fault. I blame the Ladies Man, Courvoisier. Or maybe Kalik Gold, or perhaps a fountain of rum liberally poured by Ossie Brown or one of his co-conspirators, the Calypsonians.

As elsewhere, three types of people inhabit Bimini: those who make things happen; watch things happen; or wonder what happened. It didn’t take long to realize Brave Stuart was a doer, a guy who got things done. Both of us attacked life with urgency and passion. So, we bonded.

Brave was a man of unswerving priorities: family, island, country. I shared his desire to support, encourage, and help the island children. Education mattered, character mattered, effort mattered. If someone wanted to be somebody someday, he or she had to show up, believe in him or herself, and put in the work.

One of ten children from the humblest of beginnings, and first to go to college, Leonard Stuart forged himself into Exhibit A. He was walking, talking proof that success was a process and achievements were possible.

Brave’s powerful life resulted from disciplined time management. His time choice decision-making was consistently better than many born into far more fortunate circumstance. He recognized the four ways each day’s waking hours would pass by: He could waste time, spend time, invest time, or cherish time.

Leonard Stuart invested and cherished as much time as possible in things that mattered; and spent or wasted as little as possible on things that did not. His personal brand was forged in dignity and respect; and leaves an unimpeachable legacy.

The world is large yet small. I have seen most of it. Brave knew what the planet teaches: People are 93 percent the same and seven percent different. As we navigate life, everyone faces the same choice: Do I build on the 93 or argue about the seven?

Brave was a builder. I am a builder. Together we collaborated to make positive things happen through two generations for the betterment of Bimini’s youth—initiatives for the schools plus baseball and softball for recreation.

Baseball and softball matter because they are team games played by individuals, the same as life and community. The sports are challenging— the ball has an uncanny knack for finding a person whenever he or she least wants it to—but all of life’s best character-building activities mix agony and ecstasy with random glee.

Leonard Stuart believed every child on this island deserved a life of optimistic hope, opportunity and self-belief, encouragement and support. He knew a child’s formative years are 0-to-13, and that lifting someone up—not putting him or her down—inspired the self-confidence needed to pursue a wonderful life. From this nurturing, Bimini’s next wave of community and social leaders will rise to enrich all walks of life, onisland and off. Each will honor Leonard’s legacy. Set a happy child on course for success, encourage him or her to find gratitude and joy in the smallest of things, and he or she will succeed.

Greatness, he knew, could come from anywhere. Success is measured later, not by dollars and cents but something far more important. Standing at the gates of heaven, have we been a positive force in the universe, significant in the lives of others?

Leonard Stuart was all that and more, a life welllived that has earned this man an ushered entrance behind the velvet ropes.

In closing, my pal Brave saw his beloved Bimini as a small island with infinite possibilities. By showing up, his friendship taught me to see it the same.

Rest in peace, my brother. I will love you always.
