GEORGE LAMONT BERRY

26th June, 1956 - 20th May, 2024

Psalm 127:3 “Lo children are an heritage of the Lord…..

George Lamont Berry, the eldest son of George and Vera Berry, was born on June 26, 1956 on the island of New Providence.

George graduated from St. Joseph’s Primary School, St. Augustine’s College and Te College of Te Bahamas where he obtained a degree in Welding Engineering. George pursued his career in welding and operated G.B. Steel and Welding, with his specialty as fabrication and erection.

Later he joined the Water & Sewerage Corporation as a Contract Employee, Welder II on Sept 24, 2001 in the Electrical & Mechanical Maintenance Department and confrmed as a Welder Machinist II on August 1, 2005. His duties were oxygen-acetylene and arc welding and fabrication. He was promoted to Senior Welder Machinist on January 1, 2013 and reclassifed as a Welder Foreman on January 1, 2016. George was employed at the Corporation for eleven years, retiring as Senior Foreman on June 26, 2016.

Lamont confessed faith in Jesus Christ on a job site, afer being witnessed to by Mr. Vanlock Fowler, his employer and in 1977 publicly walked the altar at East Street Gospel Chapel. Since his conversion George became involved in a number of ministries around the assembly. Te maintenance and security of the premises have been priorities for him; and his commitment has be seen in his willingness to be on call in case of emergency. Believing that “Only what’s done for Christ will last”, Bro. George has been involved in the Men’s Fellowship, Marriage Ministry and the Evangelism Committee and as a member of the Sunday School Board, he became the Sunday School’s Superintendent and was excited for Sunday School Month, where there would be a live band. He participated during the summer as a counsellor at Teen Scene’s Camp and later assisted with Vacation Bible School in the chapel’s auditorium.

He also assisted with the Big Harvest Tent, a Sunday School ministry of the community surrounding Woods Alley, which is headed by Bishop John Ferguson, from Te Church Of God Of Prophecy.

Pastor Errol Jackson has had the greatest infuence in George’s life, ensuring that he “ grew in grace and in the knowledge

of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ”.

George considered Pastor Jackson his father and continued the mentor/student relationship. Continuing his quest for knowledge, Bro. George also graduated from Commonwealth Bible College, with Pastor Rex Major as principal.

Bro George was attracted to Patricia Russell as she collected the Sunday School’s ofering, but did not inform her of this until years later. Love blossomed between George and Patricia and on January 2, 1999 George was joined to the “apple of his eye” in Holy Matrimony and they enjoyed 25 years of marital bliss.

Pastor George considered it a privilege to have been selected and appointed to serve in the capacity as a Pastor in our assembly, where he was ordained Sept 29, 2002. He continued his goal to be an able minister and teacher of the word, thereby encouraging the saints. During lockdown he was instrumental in starting nightly prayers by the men in the assembly and it currently continues.

Pastor George’s favourite song was “Blessed Jesus Hold My Hand” and his favourite verse is Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek afer; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple”

Pastor George enjoyed swimming, reading and gardening. He is described as very friendly and is known by most of St. Andrews Beach residents, as he would share fruits and even planted trees to give away. He would spend time with his childhood friends, playing a game or two of dominos through Martin Street.

Pastor George continued to serve his Lord, even afer his unfavourable diagnosis, giving thanks for all things and singing “Pass It On” and “Take it to the Lord in prayer” as he led in prayer.

On Monday night, May 20, 2024 he said his last prayer and went home to be with his Lord.

A TRIBUTE TO MY BROTHER IN THE LORD

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people.

(Mark 10:45)

WhenI think of this biblical verse, I think of my Brother in the Lord, GEORGE, as he not only served in our home church, but also in in our community and extended families. I observed him with great admiration, as he always referred to me as” Uncle Ces’. It was during the last ten to ffeen years that George and his dear wife, Patricia would join us at Christmas for our usual family dinner and fellowship. It was a joy to hear them refect about their early childhood and educational experiences and being reunited at East Gospel Chapel. George and Sherrilyn at Bowe’s Supermarket Food Store on Market Street in the 1960’s and Patricia and Sherrilyn at St. Anne’s High School in the 1970’s: and, how their adult lives reunited at East Gospel Chapel.

As fate would have it, I began to experience health challenges, and, was confded to my home, some six years ago. George and Patricia was there. George would not only have accompanied my dear wife, Sherrilyn to the Doctor’s Ofce and therapeutic sessions; He would have coordinated the regular home visits for the Church leaders and members for the breaking of bread services, Christmas Caroling, and visitations by the Church Bus; even during and afer COVID (19), members could be heard singing and praying at my bedroom window. Tese visits never ended without the presentation of a card of well wishes and a fruit basket.

George was a quiet, unassuming husband, son, father, brother, nephew, and friend that quietly gave of his time, his love, to serve as a witness and to share his passion for Christ to his brothers and sisters.

George’s sudden illness came as a surprise to all of us! Who would not have thought or seen his sudden illness? I can only say, that, Our Heavenly Father knows best and had prepared us for such a time! Our brother and friend was truly an angel, a crusader, a brother, a child of the King.

I am reminded of one of the best historical accounts of the origin of the undocumented story behind the Crusaders hymn “Fairest Lord Jesus” as the German Crusaders made their long and wearisome trek to the Holy Land. We can truly say that our Brother, George was a committed Crusader for Christ and has completed his earthly journey.

“ Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, O Tou of God and man the son: Tee will I cherish, Tee will I honor, Tou my soul’s glory, joy, and crown”.

“Beautiful Savior! Lord of the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, Praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be Tine!”

May his Soul Rest in Peace,

Cecil and Sherrilyn Wallace

PASTOR GEORGE LAMONT BERRY

WhenI shared with a former member of East Street Gospel Chapel that Pastor George had passed away, the response received was “I am so sorry to hear of his passing, I really liked him, he was really down to earth.” Tat thought has resonated in my mind since and I am convinced that it truly describes the type person Pastor George was.

I met George shortly afer he came to know Christ as Lord and started attending East Street Gospel Chapel. He was hungry for the Word of God and wanted to learn as much as he could about this Jesus Christ who he had come to trust. He along with several other young men were part of a weekly Bible study led by my dad, Pastor Errol Jackson took them under his wings. George was consistent, showing up each week with pen, paper, his Bible and a heart to learn.

Pastor George was a humble, committed Christian and was always willing to do what he could for the Lord. He showed up each week for services for the prayer and was a dedicated member of Cell Group A and even afer relocating, he and wife Patricia remained active participants in the group. We worked together in the Sunday School where he was devoted to ensuring that things were in place for children to come and learn about the Bible, even before being named Sunday School Superintendent. He had a heart for children. Tis commitment was evident in his involvement in the Big Harvest Sunday School ministry to which he introduced others from East Street Gospel. Community outreach, sporting events, youth group, Awana or Word of Life, George was always there and usually, the last one to leave as he wanted to make sure that the church was secured afer everyone lef.

George was not just a brother in the Lord or a Pastor at church. He was family. He had a strong familial bond with the Jacksons. We all knew of his deep love for his spiritual mentor, Bro. J, but George and Sis. Loletta were also close. Pastor George would always stop by, on his way from work, to hang out at the Reef, visit if someone was not well or to drop of the jujus, plums or whatever was growing on the trees in his yard. When I refect on my past career, truly I can say that George was one of my greatest prayerful supporters, a real encourager.

Pastor George loved the Lord, Pastor George lived for the Lord and Pastor George looked forward to being with the Lord. He was excited about His Lord who had done so much for him, in saving him from a life of sin.

Pastor George Lamont Berry, we will missed you dearly. May you continue to rest in the everlasting arms of your Lord and Saviour.

George was Alice’s and my friend, but mine especially. We loved him. Alice and I appreciated: George’s love for Jesus, his desire to grow spiritually, and those at East Street who encouraged him to grow and serve the Savior. We thank you. Alice and I were privileged George shared his home--father, mother and family with us. It was special George came to Cat Island and visited us. He made the basketball pole we used at camp. Alice and I always enjoyed sweet fellowship with George, Wilfred and Terry Bain. Know eternity with our Heavenly Father and Savior surpasses death. Tank you Patricia, for being George’s Best Friend and Help Meet. Next will be our reunion in Heaven. If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, George is urging you to let Jesus save and change your life for eternity.
