Donnell Elizabeth Rolle nee Ferguson was born on February 25th, 1963, the first child of Gilbert and Rosie Ferguson nee Cleare, both deceased. Donnell or Don, as she was affectionately called, was the eldest of six children. Don was the protector and fighter for her siblings. You didn’t dare mess with her siblings, and this was displayed when we moved into Yellow Elder. Someone dared to take Fabien’s bicycle, and Don, the protector stood toe to toe with the uncle of the young boy, in conclusion, she earned the respect of the neighborhood and retrieved Fabien’s bicycle. On another occasion, while sitting alone in the classroom on my first day at Ridgeland Primary School, not familiar with anyone at the school, Don walked in to check on me, she asked, “you, okay?” and the world was right. I felt protected as everyone saw my “no nonsense” big sister. Don continued her education at C.H. Reeves Junior High, and graduated from The Government High School where she had the freedom of moving about without any siblings.

Don began work at Resorts International as a masseuse in the popular Spa where she remained for many years. Don was also an avid collector of fine jewelry, crystal and Lladro figurines. Our sister knew her jewelry and was responsible for many of our first signature pieces.

While hanging out with friends in Yellow Elder, Don met her husband of 32 years, Leroy. The young couple started a family, welcoming first, a son, Romain and later their beloved Naja. Don loved and doted on her children.

She spent many years working at McDonalds, and later moved to Albury Sayles Primary School where she found a love once again for children as well as being their protector. Don often talked about how she would watch for the little ones who wanted to sneak out of the back gates not knowing that she was ahead of them, which foiled their plans. Don was also an avid collector of fine jewelry, crystal and Lladro figurines.

Don loved family trips to Orlando with all the children, and although

she was unable to swim, she ensured that she was near all of the pools they visited. A shopper extraordinaire, she took the slower pace in selecting her purchases which often would extend our scheduled times in the mall or Walmart. She was the auntie that rescued her nieces and nephews from pending discipline, she was the aunt who told the parents to relax and would cover for her nieces and nephews. Her mothering nature was a blessing when she dedicated an entire weekend to babysit her nephew who had colic, giving their parents a much-needed break. She was also the aunt who would shower them with treats and toys. What a joy it was to her nieces and nephews.

Another passion of our sister was her beloved party, the Free National Movement. Don was an avid and faithful member, who dedicated her time and unwavering support for all their events. Don was adamant about beautifying her yard and ohhh how lovely is her garden..John and Bianca have taken up the task, we thank you.

In June 2023, Don welcomed her beloved grandson, Chairo, and was labeled as the dotting Nana. Everything was Chairo. Present at his birth, doctors’ visits, and his ride every evening after leaving Albury Sayles. Don was passionate about Chairo and his future. She wanted the best for him and ensured he followed in her footsteps. They were faithful members of the 7am Mass. If they were not in attendance, you can be assured that someone in St Ambrose was aware of the reason for them not being present. Don loved God and her church and served for a brief period on the Usher Ministry.

Although always looking after others, Don neglected her own health, and sadly her unexpected and sudden passing led to her demise on Thursday August 22, after requesting her last breakfast of pig feet souse from her husband. She quietly slipped away having received the call to be reunited in death with the countless loved ones who had gone on before her.

RECEPTION OF THE BODY

Celebrant: With faith in Jesus, we receive the body of our sister DONNELL for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us, therefore, with confidence pray to God our Heavenly Father, the giver of Life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister DONNELL We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

As we partake of this holy food of new and unending life, may your Holy Spirit establish us as a royal priesthood with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John The Baptist, St. Agnes and all your sons and daughters who share in your eternal inheritance; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

OUR MOM

MY FRIEND, MY WIFE

32 years is a lifetime, I have moments where I’m in utter disbelieve that you’re gone. You were my friend and my wife, in good times and bad times.

When I hurt my leg, you were my nurse, my everything…going to the hospital daily, fixing my meals, getting my meds and generally worrying about my well-being.

It’s hard not hearing your voice every morning. Your fussing about your garden and what you need done.

We never referred to you as mom or mummy, you were always, Don. I guess people thought it was strange, but regardless, we loved and respected you as our mother.

You made sure we had everything we needed ALWAYS. You made a way when we couldn’t see our way; and we would move heaven and earth to have you here with us.

Our hearts are broken, we are broken, a part of us is gone. We are forever grateful for the time God gave us with you.

Your laughter, jokes and just being Don is what I miss. I shed tears daily but I will hold dear those memories and while there is a void, I have to trust that God knows best.

We are still at loss and taken aback by your unexpected passing; human frailties and misgivings aside, slowly realizing that’s just the way it was divinely designed to be!

Today is full of memories of a sister that was always the calm and quiet one. Unselfishly giving of herself; this is HARD, but we lean on the everlasting arms of our Savior. God in His Infinite Wisdom has seen fit to take a part of us home. We mourn your absence, we don’t look forward to Christmas, your favorite time of year. Driving pass your house won’t be the same, but we are sure Mummy met you as we can hear her call, “shortstuff, you reach”.
