On November 11th 1946, a beautiful baby girl was born to the late Walton and Roxanna Jones (nee Minus) in the quaint settlement of Peats, Mangrove Cay, Andros. Annis was the 5th child to this union. She had an idyllic childhood until the untimely death of her mother at the age of 8. Her father went on The Contract in Fort Pearce, FL but he was faithful, sending clothes and other supplies and came home regularly to visit. She was raised by her aunt Oral McNeil. She had fond memories of walking up the Bay to Lisbon Creek with her grandmother Rosa to visit her great grandmother.

She began her education at the Swain’s All Age Public School in Mangrove Cay, Andros. She later moved to New Providence and lived with her big sister Mae Glena and continued her education at Eastern Senior School where she studied home economics. She was very talented and worked well with her hands crocheting, sewing, cooking and baking to help ends meet and take care of her children.

Annis loved children. She gave birth to five of her own but mothered countless others whom she brought into her home, nurtured and cared for as her own. As a single parent, she sacrificed and struggled, sometimes working two and three jobs to make ends meet and make sure her children got what they needed. Proud of the way she raised her children to be productive

citizens, she would say “I did my best and I never had to go to any court or prison.” Annis was family oriented; she stayed in touch with her extended family, often calling cousins and friends from ‘home’ and attending funerals, reunions and get-togethers.

Annis began her career as a Nursing Auxiliary at Geriatrics Hospital, where she worked with her close friend Clothilda Stubbs (deceased). In 1966 she joined the staff of the Princess Margaret Hospital where she worked as a Nursing Auxiliary in Accident & Emergency and other wards in the hospital. She went on to become a Central Sterile Supply Processor and Office Assistant. In her fifties she returned to Bahamas Technical & Vocational Institute and completed an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Office Administration when many others half her age gave up and quit. She stuck with it, worked hard and received a promotion to Senior Office Assistant in the Transport Department. In her 46 years at the Princess Margaret Hospital, she excelled and received many awards for punctuality, attendance, and outstanding customer service. She participated in the Mega Woman Retreat and won the Star Award. In 2011 she received the Salute to Greatness Lifetime Achievement Award for 40 years of dedicated Service to Health Care. In 2012, she retired with high praises, many gifts, and accolades from her employer and colleagues alike.

Her retirement was well spent. She completely renovated her home and was proud to see the fruits of her labour. She loved planting trees in her yard, including pear, peach, mango, coconut, juju, reaping the fruits and sharing them with her family, friends and neighbours. She loved going to her church and attending funerals of family and friends, especially for persons from Mangrove Cay.

One of her mottos for life was, If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody with a word or song, if I can show somebody he’s traveling wrong, then my living will not be in vain. Annis was a helper and a giver; she would give her last to help someone and took the time to talk and counsel persons in trouble or distress. Her family and friends who knew her well know she had a mouth on her. Even before her golden years, she would make sure you knew exactly what she thought of what you said or did. She was no deepfreeze.

Though not feeling well, Annis travelled to Florida in January to be with her three sisters one last time, when they celebrated Mae Glena’s 86th birthday. During her illness, if you asked how she was doing, she would reply “right here in the hands of the Lord.” After long years of managing her illness, in and out of hospital and receiving medical treatment, on 29th August 2023 at 11:55pm she breath her last breath and gave up the ghost. SIBLINGS: 3 sisters, Mae Glena Jones of Miami, Florida and Roslyn Jones of Tampa, Florida, Emaline Woodside and 1 brother Leo Jones. Simeon, Walton, Catherine Jones and Cleotha Oliver predeceased her.

Celebrant: With faith in Jesus Christ, we reverently receive the body of our dear sister Annis, for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God, our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

Celebrant: O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister Annis. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE CREED (THE APOSTLE’S CREED)

Priest: Let us with confidence and hope confess faith into which we were baptized as we say:

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. All: Almighty God, we thank You that in Your great love You have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of Your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of Your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be unto us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow, nor crying, but the fullness of life with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Mummy,

you were my everything and more. I can never express the importance you will forever hold in my life. You were the best mother a person could ask for. You were a realist. The many times I came to you for advice you never told me what I wanted to hear, but rather what I needed to hear. I vividly remember the many days we spent together during your long illness, I tried my best to be there for you as you have always been there for me and my kids. How you did it I will never know, but I know why you did… pure undying love. I pray I can be half the parent you were. Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes, because for those of us who love with our heart and soul there is no such thing as separation. I love you Mum, as you often said I truly believe you are “in the hands of the Lord”. Thank ou, mummy, for everything. No matter what age, I’ll always love & miss you. You are my A1 FROM DAY 1.

you were the epitome of a strong woman. As a young boy, I observed your desire to provide the best for your family through hard work and resourcefulness, I am still amazed at how talented and resourceful you were, and how you did it. You exuded determination, industriousness, self-reliance and a love for God. You taught me to trust God in all things. You always made sure I was honest with God and myself. Your love was relentless and immeasurable, you never gave up on me, you provided for, protected taught me and stretched me into who I am today. You are a part of my DNA. You thought me the keys to a successful life, embracing and loving who you are, diligence, honesty, good work ethics, determination, love and devotion to God. Mum, I will forever miss you, your absence has left an emptiness that I cannot explain. You have thought me everything except how to take these steps in a world without you in it. I must now lean on the memories we made until we meet again.

I love you and miss you. When you were in hospital you asked for me and I came. Thank God, because I didn’t know that would be the last time, I would speak with you. I remember that Friday before I went back to Freeport, I visited you and said I will come back when you get out of hospital to take care of you, not knowing you would not be coming home anymore. My heart aches, but thank God you are no longer in pain and suffering. You have been delivered. Take your rest mummy, you have been delivered.

The reality of your death is too hard to face right now but knowing you are no longer in pain is a welcomed relief. Mummy you are my everything, the wind beneath my wings, my greatest supporter, encourager and inspiration. You motivated me to strive for more and embrace all the opportunities you did not have. I appreciate your unconditional love, your struggles and many sacrifices you made for me. The life lessons you taught me will continue to guide my days forever even though I won’t be able to call and chat anymore like we did, everyday. You taught me to pray and trust God in all things. All this and more has shaped me into the person I am today. I was so proud of you for all you did and accomplished with so little. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and show my love and appreciation for all you did. Mummy, I love you more than words can say. I don’t know how to live without you being here. God Help Me! Sleep on, Old Nan and take your rest. I can’t wait to see you again on that Glad Reunion Day.

Like an earth angel living among us, you nurtured me and loved me unconditionally. The times we’ve shared will always bring a laugh or a smile. Your words of wisdom, strength and inspiration have always been a blessing and will never be forgotten. You were a support system to not only me but to many around you. Thank you for teaching me to be strong, wise but most importantly kind. Your love, kindness and strength I will miss forever and ever after that. Your physical journey has ended, for this my heart is sad. I will keep you in my heart every minute of everyday, until we meet again.

MyMom

was one of the most strongest , kindhearted souls to grace this earth! She was like a modern day Mother Theresa. The lives she impacted both physically and financially are numerous. Mom was also a strong person who worked hard to provide for her children in order to give us the best life that she could. I will always be grateful to her for the love and wisdom she continuously gave. I will miss you but you will live on in my heart. Sleep on mom and take your rest, I love you but Jesus loves you best!

Mama, you were and still are the light in my heart. I know I won’t see you anymore in this life however, I will do everything I can to represent you and all that you have thought me. You have been at every significant influence in my life and I will surely miss you. I cannot believe you are gone, when you left us, you took a part of me. Mama. I really love you and always will. I will always be thankful to mama for the lessons she taught me, but she did not teach me how to live without her. However, I know that she would want me to continue to live life to the fullest.
