NEW HARDCOVER JOURNALS
(AND ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS)
Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
Original Artwork: Handwritten excerpt from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince Era: 1943
Region: France
Current Location: The Morgan Library, New York City

Embellished Manuscripts Collection
Saint-Exupéry Collection
Available as:
Ultra and midi hardcover journal, bookmark, canvas bag, pencil case, and washi tape
Background:
O Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–1944) was one of the grand adventurers of his time, but he is most famous today for his self-illustrated philosophical story, The Little Prince.
O The novella tells of the meeting between a stranded pilot and a prince who lives on an asteroid.
O We have partnered with the Saint-Exupéry Foundation to bring an excerpt from The Little Prince, set atop a backdrop of the author’s unmistakable illustrations, to our Embellished Manuscripts Collection.
O Saint-Exupéry disappeared on a reconnaissance mission over the Mediterranean while flying for the Free French Forces in July of 1944, and the wreckage of his aircraft was discovered nearly 60 years later off the coast of Marseille.
O What exactly happened to him remains a mystery, but decades later his work continues to delight readers of all ages.
Fun Facts:
O This is the second time Saint-Exupéry has been a part of our Embellished Manuscripts Collection, as we previously released a cover featuring an excerpt from his memoir, Wind, Sand and Stars. Originally published in 1939, the book chronicles the author’s adventures.
O The Little Prince has become a classic of children’s literature and is one of the most translated and beloved books in the world.

Jane Austen, Persuasion

Embellished Manuscripts Collection
Available as:
Ultra and midi hardcover journal, bookmark, canvas bag, document folder, and pencil case
Original Artwork: Handwritten draft of Jane Austen’s Persuasion Era: Early 1800s
Region: England
Current Location: British Library, London, UK
Background:
O Jane Austen (1775–1817) is perhaps the best-loved of all female English novelists.
O Reproduced here is one of the rare surviving handwritten manuscript pages from chapter 11 of her 1818 novel, Persuasion
O Austen’s last completed work, Persuasion is her only novel to feature a heroine past her first youth, and it is certainly the author’s most biting and ironic book.
O Her novels, published anonymously, are romantic and satirical examinations of the domestic issues of her day. In Persuasion, Austen gives us a satisfying love story while also turning a critical gaze on the kinds of persuasion enforced on young women.
Fun Facts:
O Though Austen did not achieve fame during her lifetime, her examinations of social issues have since become cultural landmarks and continue to resonate powerfully with audiences in each new generation.
O We previously offered Jane Austen’s Persuasion as an Embellished Manuscript cover back in 2015. We are delighted to welcome Austen back into our Paperblanks collection with an updated backdrop to accompany the author’s handwritten draft.

Picaresque

Picaresque
Available as: Grande, ultra, midi, and mini hardcover journal, guest book, and bookmark
Original Artwork: Binding of Alain-René Lesage’s Gil Blas (third edition) Era: 1846
Region: France
Current Location: Paperblanks design library, Vancouver, Canada
Background:
O Reproduced here is an 1846 double volume binding containing Alain-René Lesage’s 18th-century picaresque novel Gil Blas along with Lazarillo de Tormes
O Lazarillo de Tormes, a Spanish novella published anonymously in 1554, influenced Lesage’s work.
O These two foundational works of the picaresque genre were published as a paired edition in Paris.
Fun Facts:
O Gil Blas was one of the original endearing rogues in literature.
O The story Lazarillo de Tormes is what gives us the term “picaresque,” stemming from the term picaresca, meaning “rascal.”
O Published in the early 1700s, Gil Blas was a key part of Thomas Jefferson’s reading list.

Hafiz’s Peacocks

Sangorski & Sutcliffe
Available as: Ultra, midi, and mini hardcover journal, bookmark, canvas bag, and pencil case
Original Artwork: Háfiz̤ of Shíráz: Selections from His Poems (translated from the Persian by Herman Bicknell)
Era: 1910 binding (14th-century story)
Region: London
Current Location: The Huntington Library, San Marino, California
Background:
O This glorious binding comes from the revered artisans at Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a worldrenowned British bindery.
O Sangorski & Sutcliffe, considered to be one of the most important bookbinding firms of the 20th century, was established in London in 1901.
O The bindery was especially prized for their jewelled bindings that used real gold and precious stones.
O This design comes from a 1910 binding created to hold Háfiz̤ of Shíráz: Selections from His Poems, a compilation of works by the acclaimed Persian poet Háfiz̤
O This opulent binding contains red and green levant morocco with three stunningly bejewelled peacocks in full plumage.
Fun Facts:
O Sangorski & Sutcliffe’s luxurious and iconic binding style had us eager to add a second title to our series. We previously released Diamond Jubilee, a binding originally crafted in 1922 to house Rudyard Kipling’s “Recessional” poem, written in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
O Another of Sangorski & Sutcliffe’s famous peacock bindings, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (also known as the Great Omar), sank with the Titanic in 1912. A replacement version of the Great Omar was finished in the late 1930s but shortly thereafter was incinerated during the Blitz of World War II.

Blue Willow

Celebrate Hanfu
Available as: Ultra, midi, and mini hardcover journal
Original Artwork: Mamianqun skirt
Era: 1850–1900
Region: China
Current Location: The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), London, UK
Background:
O The detailed blue embroidery reproduced here is taken from a panelled skirt known as a mamianqun or “horse face” skirt, a garment worn by Han Chinese women in the traditional dress style known as Hanfu.
O Dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1850–1900), this example is made from delicate pale blue silk damask, embroidered with silk and gold thread and edged with silk satin.
O The choice of colour, pattern, and ornamentation on the mamianqun reflected situational and social contexts and could communicate relationship standing during weddings, as well as the hierarchy between women in a household.
O By reproducing this wonderfully intricate and vibrant embroidered traditional Chinese clothing, we hope to celebrate Hanfu’s aesthetic and ongoing cultural influence.
Fun Facts:
O We previously released a series that celebrated textiles from this era entitled Peking Opera Embroidery, which showcased the costumes worn by performers at the Peking Opera in China.
O The mamianqun has undergone various changes throughout history, surviving multiple dynasties and going on to influence fashion in the Western world. Han-style clothing experienced a particular resurgence in 2003 and appeared in many editions of Vogue.
O A red, mid-calf Qing dynasty langan-style mamianqun was worn by Princess Diana in 1981 prior to her official engagement announcement. The garment was in line with Chinese wedding tradition; however, the skirt had a red belt instead of the typical white.
