Ivory Park taxi driver graduates to become a teacher by Dumisani Hlatswayo
N
kazimulo Pelican Khumalo is a 27-year-old taxi driver from Estcourt, KwaZuluNatal. He graduated with a Bachelor degree in education from the University of South Africa. Khumalo did his primary schooling in Kwazulu-Natal and later relocated to Ivory Park where he continued with his high school. He did his grade 10, 11 and 12 at Eqinisweni Secondary. Due to lack of funds, he could not go to varsity after completing his matric in 2010. So he had no choice but to become a taxi driver. "My father was not happy with me becoming a taxi driver. However, my mother said she'll pray for me because she can see that I have a dream of becoming something." As Khumalo was only 19 years old at the time, most passengers were skeptical about his driving skills.
"Most people think that when you are a taxi driver you are a violent person, I am not a violent person at all," said Khumalo. "My dream has always been to become a teacher so I did my degree with Unisa via distance learning." Asked how he managed to finance his studies with his earnings, he said: "My boss usually tells me that I must bring in what I can manage to bring in each day. So, there is no set target. This is because each day is different; we have busy days and quiet days." He said he used most of his R700 salary to finance his studies. "I stayed at home and I didn't have to pay for transport to go to work. My parents also understood that I couldn't help them because I was paying for my studies." Khumalo said. Khumalo leaves home daily at 3am for his taxi work and returns home just after 9pm. He works between Sunninghill and Ivory Park in Midrand. While his taxi is
queueing for passengers, he studies. "Most taxi drivers have a dream of owning a fleet of taxis. I don't have such a dream, but I am interested in developing myself," said Khumalo. Asked where he draws his inspiration from, he said: "I am a Christian and my pastor usually tells us that if you want something, you should fight for it because nothing comes easy in life." He says he looks up to teachers like Enock Shishenge who teaches at Eqinisweni Secondary. Shishenge is also one of the teachers who encouraged Khumalo to pursue his studies. Another taxi driver, Siyabonga Ngobese said he knew Khumalo since 2012 as a respecting young man. "He will politely ask every time there is something he doesn't understand."
Khumalo was refunded the R52,500 tuition fees he paid for his studies for five years. The chairman of the taxi rank also bought Khumalo a laptop, while other taxi
owners bought him suits. He now dreams of obtaining his PhD in the field of his study. He said they will be launching a foundation to assist other taxi drivers.
