SAPS Crime Alert for Oakmore Staff Writer

O

akmore - High unemployment in South Africa is one of the major factors leading to an increase in crime rate. The SAPS in Olifantsfontein have recently released a statement alerting residents of crimes that are happening in Oakmore.

Community members are advised to stop walking alone in the late hours because they might be victims of armed robbery and rape. The SAPS says motorists are advised not to park at the old Pretoria road next to Oakmore, rather they park at the nearest garage to avid being victims of crime. According to Constable Mokete Serakwana Communication Officer Olifantsfontein SAPS Oakmore has become a crime hotspot for criminals, many crime cases have been reported that happened in that area so it is best to avoid it especially at night.“We are urging the community members to take our crime alerts into consideration to avoid being victims of crime,” said Constable Serakwana.

Khumalos claim the Mall built on their Land

A

spot where the Mall Of Thembisa is located was once allegedly a farm that belonged to Mr. Timothy Maqobeni Khumalo. This startling revelation was made by one of Khumalo’s sons, Thamsanqa Khumalo.

The mall which consists of a farming co-op on the site, restaurants, franchises, gym, food courts, and bank branches opened its doors officially in November 2020 at Olifantsfontein road. The 44 690 square metre shopping centre is one of the largest township malls to date.

Khumalo was one of few black commercial farmers in Olifantsfontein who supplied milk and other food supplies to the residents of Tembisa, Daveyton, and other townships. His farm was taken away, and today the Khumalo’s are jobless and homeless.

A letter of land occupation seen

by The Olifants News states that the Khumalo family paid R1 per year for 37 hectares of land. The document also states that the document in question is a title deed. The family alleged that Nu-Way Housing Development fraudulently registered the farm in 1995, and later transferred it to the City of Ekurhuleni in 2019, a statement that is vehemently refuted by Mall Of Thembisa.

According to a statement issued by the Mall Of Thembisa, the land on which the shopping centre was developed was bought by Mall of Thembisa PTY LTD from Southern the statement.

They also established market gardens on the site for Reahola who are selling their produce to the community of Thembisa.

According to Khumalo’s son, Thamsanqa Khumalo, the spot where the Mall Of Thembisa is standing, was once his family’s fields. He said

his father engaged with authorities to find out how the farm was taken away and how a portion of it was sold to developers.

“We tried to contact the public protector, of which we are still waiting for her response. The South African Human Commission asked us to do a petition so that they can declare

our farm as a heritage site,” said Thamsanqa.

Unfortunately, Khumalo senior passed away in 1997, due to depression. At the time of his death, the remainder of his livestock was already stolen. He tried to report the theft to Ivory Park police, but no arrests were made.

“We have written letters to the mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mr. Mzwandile Masina, and the spokesperson Mrs. Khumalo in 2018. However, we have not received any constitutional response,” he said.

Thamsanqa said there have been deliberate and calculated successive attacks on the Khumalo family by all forms of criminals over years.

“These crimes have been reported and there are records made by the British South African Company Police Force (BSACPF) and South African Police Service (SAPS) at Olifantsfontein and other police stations,” he added.

The Khumalo farm homestead had the following immovable assets: a grazing land for cattle, horses, goats and sheep, fields for food security and, kraal for religious and cultural purpose, houses for the family and farm workers, tractors, farming equipment, and vehicles.

“All the assets have been stolen the remaining ones vandalised and demolished by individuals, companies, and the City of Ekurhuleni employees human settlement department,” he revealed.

“Once my father passed away, we experienced more invading in my family’s property. People started invading. We opened a case in 2001, which is still open. There is another docket which my father opened in 1997 when they stole his livestock; they took 45 goats,” he added.

All questions sent to the City of Ekurhuleni drew a blank.

he recovery of Mzansi’s economy depends on how soon industries such as tourism and events management start operating with fewer restrictions and thrive. Any reduction in the need for social distancing would greatly help business owners like Matsotso Lekalakala.

He said the purpose of his business was to make a difference in the community, from the word go. “I wanted to give upcoming artists and entrepreneurs a platform to showcase their talents. Also for them to make a living out of their craft,” explained Matsotso.

He believes that the Thembisa public will be keen to see much loved events return to the calendar. “ I was inspired by local talent to venture into this business.

A year ago, social distancing became the biggest obstacle to resuming events. For a couple of months since Covid hit, artists and events managers like Matsotso found it extremely difficult to make a living.

Even when they hosted an event, they would still be expected to avoid crowding around stages where key artists were performing.

The 24-year-old entrepreneur said his days are different since he has to run more than one business.

“Typically, this is what an average weekday would look like: at 4 am I’m up off to the gym, meditate, then I look forward to the tasks of the day,” he said.

Taps run dry in Thembisa

t’s been nearly two days since residents of Thembisa saw any drops of water coming out of their taps. The water service interruption which started on Thursday, 21 October, until 02h00 on Friday, 22 October 2021 resulted in low water pressure to no water.

A statement put out by Ekurhuleni Municipality said: “This is due to repairs that will be conducted on the leaking H17 pipeline,” read the statement.

The following areas in Thembisa were affected: Winnie Mandela Park zones 1, to 9 excluding Winnie Mandela zones 10 and 12, Tswelopele (all extensions), and Clayville (all extensions).

Three water tankers were dispatched in high lying areas, including Esselen Park, Liliba Section, and Umthambeka Section Extension 11. Additional tanks were made available for residents.

Hijacker nabbed a few minutes later after committing a crime

H E Acti ng St ation Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Colonel Baba Mpotoane, has welcomed the swift arrest of one of the suspects responsible for hijacking a motor vehicle in Kaalfontein just an hour after the crime was committed.

Rabie Ridge SAPS police officers, together with members of a vehicle tracking company, last night responded to a signal which took them to Umthambeka Section in Tembisa and, as they approached the hijacked vehicle, the three occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. One was, luckily, arrested, and is behind bars at one of the police stations within the precinct. Apart from the recovery of the hijacked vehicle, the police also found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and the cellular phone belonging to one of the victims.

Thembisa’s young poet publishes her first non-fiction book

hembisa bred poet Karabo Digasho otherwise well known by her stage name “Karabo The Poet” has published her first book entitled, Women Talk Tears and Tissues.

The 19-year-old collaborated with other young writers last year and the collaboration gave birth to an anthology called Poetic Minds Combined.

In 2020, she focused her energy on writing her first solo book which, according to Digasho, stands to break barriers and advocate for women.

She said Women Talk Tears and Tissues is a book that aims to look into the past and encourage a better tomorrow for women of this country who are free and not deprived of their will by religion, culture, and traditions.

Thembisa’s police embark on a door-to-door campaign

embisa Social Crime Prevention has embarked on a door-todoor campaign. The initiative took place at Greenfield’s in Esselen Park. Crime awareness pamphlets were handed out, and complaints were registered on the spot. The police encouraged victims of abuse to report crimes rather than assuming that they would not be taken seriously.

Communication Officer Cst Patricia Mgijima denounced claims that victims (especially men) are laughed at by the police when they report abuse.

“We have helped a handful of male victims successfully. This is just a stigma put to the police and needs to be dealt with,” she explained.

While still busy with the campaign, a group of concerned neighbours approached the police. They informed the police officers about an elderly woman whose grandson terrorises her. According to the
