Community members are advised to stop walking alone in the late hours because they might be victims of armed robbery and rape. PanSALB advocates for African languages

T

he Pan South African L a n g u a ge Boa rd (PanSALB) commemorates the month of February as Language Activism Month, which is a campaign centred on the International Mother Language Day (IMLD), a UNESCO public observance day that takes place annually on the 21st.

The campaign is aimed at creating awareness on the use of mother tongue and to instill pride in our languages and positively contribute towards nation building. For the past four years, the campaign has grown in stature and popularity and provides an opportunity to re-imagine ways to effectively contribute towards the development and promoting of indigenous languages and

to encourage discourse on the importance of preserving our languages.

The theme of the 2021 International Mother Language Day, “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society,” recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.

UNESCO believes education, based on the first language or mother tongue, must begin from the early years as early childhood care and education is the foundation of learning.

Owing to COVID-19 regulations, the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) will this year conduct its language activism campaign through digital platforms and will run from 01–28 February 2021.

The Tembisa Masters Social League

he COVID-19 pandemic has caused a disruption to soccer across the world, and Thembisa was no exception.

Leagues and competitions have to be put on hold, and that included the Tembisa Masters Social League that has been around for the past 20 years. Currently, soccer fans have to watch all PSL football matches from the comfort of their home, as the Covid-19 regulations do not allow fans to flock stadiums yet.

Currently, teams competing in the Tembisa Masters Social League are allowed to have up to 35 players. In addition, they have to be registered, and each player should be above 35. Players that have played in the league include Pollen Ndlanya, Jerry Skhosana, Isaac Shai to name

A team that had lifted the TMSL trophy several times is Kwasakwasa FC, a team that has most ex-soccer players. Kwasa Kwasa FC players include former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi, Bamuza Sono, Josta Dladla, Raymond Senama. Moloi said last season they sponsored about 100 school shoes for schools at Ecaleni, Shukumani, Mashemong primary schools. “The previous year we donated groceries to the Tembisa Old age Home. So each year there is an initiative that we take part in,” he concluded.
