t’s hard to believe that it’s time again for school, football and all the fun events that happen in the fall. Our September issue of Limited features some of the great fashion that we’ve seen out and about since our inaugural issue launched in November 2013.

New York’s Fashion Week starts on September 7, but every week is Fashion Week in Bloomington-Normal. We think you’ll agree after you check out the photos on pages 14-16.

This issue also features Brews at the Zoo — such a fun first-time event. I already have it on my calendar for next year! You’ll also find photos from the popular Brats and Bags event and coverage of several Community Cancer Center events.

Speaking of our Community Cancer Center, a big thank-you to Dee Frautschi, who covered so many events while I was on vacation.

Dee not only takes amazing photos, but is also an excellent reporter.

This issue could not have happened without her.

Nothing says “fashion” better than a French Fries purse, which I won after a heated round of bidding at the recent Power of the Purse event. Someone walked away with a $4,600 Chanel bag that night. I walked away with a French Fries purse. I think I definitely got the better end of the deal!

Little Library Take Two Story and Photos by Jean Lawyer

T

hree and a half years ago my family installed Little Free Library #4940 in front of our home in rural Heyworth. Since then, hundreds of books have come and gone through its doors.

Among the things we’ve learned as LFL stewards are: 1. We receive a lot more books than we give away.

2. Children’s books are most popular.

We had to expand our library. For the last year, we were wheeling out a red wagon with children’s books, so kids could select and reach them easily. However, that solution was very weather-dependent.

Thanks to the generosity of The Pantagraph and the ingenuity of other library stewards , we now have an ideal solution to expand our book offerings. And it’s weatherproof.

We acquired a former newspaper vending machine to house our new young readers’ library. At the same time, Cathy and Dave Oloffson (stewards of LFL # 5414 & 38282 in Normal) also selected one for their front yard. Many other stewards across the U.S. also are using repurposed newspaper vending machines.

One of the best parts of a LFL is putting your own stamp on the design. My husband Dennis commissioned some steel panels, and our children, grandchildren and friends helped decorate them.

However, the absolute best part of an LFL is watching children and adults in the neighborhood come and browse through the shelves, and take home some reading material.

“Cancer Bites” Fundraiser Benefits Support Services Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi

T

he first Cancer Bites Fundraiser was held in July to benefit support services for patients of the Community Cancer Center. Those services include an oncology social worker and dietitian as well as health education and chaplain services.

Thou shalt religiously watch the Weather Channel, ESPN Sports Center and the Food Network.

Love thy Cubs and thoroughly hate thy Cardinals… or vice versa.

Thou shalt love potlucks in Bloomington-Normal, whether at the office (“Food Day!”) or at church.

Thou shalt endure continuous road reconstruction projects, particularly in summer.

While verily I say unto, fill thy

stadiums and pack thy arenas, realize in B-N that any sitting of over 5,000 people in one place in Bloomington-Normal is not easy to come by ... unless perhaps it’s a country music icon at the Coliseum.

Thou shalt never spend more than $10 for lunch.

Thou shalt never also under-fill thy Target or thy Super Wal-Mart or thy Biaggi’s parking lots. Ever.

Enjoy thy weekend golf game, succeeded only perhaps by attending thy weekend youth league soccer and/or football games or band festivals to see thee products of thy loins.

Thou shalt never seriously consider actually merging thy school districts. Or thy cities. Keep them wholly ... separate.

baby bump is just one of the signs of your pregnancy.

Rapidly changing hormone levels contribute to many physical changes in your body including fatigue, breast tenderness, nausea and constipation.

Not every woman experiences all these effects. Some will have one or two and others will have more. Some women are surprised that they develop varicose veins during pregnancy due, in some cases, to rising progesterone levels that cause the walls of the blood vessels to relax.

Varicose veins can appear during pregnancy for a number of reasons other than hormonal changes. If your

mother or father had varicose veins, you are much more likely to develop them. As your uterus grows, it puts pressure on the large vein in your abdomen (the inferior vena cava), which in turn increases pressure in the leg veins, leading to varicose veins.

Additionally, while you are pregnant, the amount of blood in your body doubles, adding to the burden on your veins.

Some varicose veins may disappear quickly after birth but they do tend to get worse with each successive pregnancy and as you get older. Here are 6 things you can do to help reduce your risk for varicose veins while pregnant: 1. Exercise as permitted by your doctor 2. Keep your weight within the range

recommended by your doctor 3. Elevate your feet and legs up whenever possible.

Community Cancer Center Butterfly Release Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi

T

he Community Cancer Center in Normal held its first butterfly release in the new healing garden on July 30. Over 200 monarch and Painted Lady butterflies were released by more than 100 community citizens in memory or honor of loved ones.

It was a vivid expression of hope and peace. As the butterflies were released, participants delighted in their upward flight. They often landed on people or flowers in the new butterfly garden.

An old butterfly blessing was read: “May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun and find your shoulder to light on, to bring you peace, happiness and riches today, tomorrow and beyond.”

the Denaults in 2014. At one point, Julien was toying with the idea of becoming a pilot.

Which makes the Denault family a perfect match, as Steve is a licensed pilot and the entire family is aviation-oriented. Steve has taken Julien up in his plane, a 1946 Cessna 120.

“I know I needed to up the ante this year,” laughed Steve. “So I called my friend Dave Burroughs.”

While many may know Dave as the founder and CEO of the Bloomington Gold Corvette Show, he is also an aviation enthusiast who began flying at age 9, became licensed at 17 and became a flight instructor when he was 21.

“He’s a pilot’s pilot,” said Steve.

Which might be a bit of an understatement for someone who is a four-time Stearman national Aerobatic Champion, eight-time Stearman National Champion and national formation check pilot.

So a day after Julien’s nine-hour flight from Paris to Chicago O’Hare, he was once again at an airport ready to take another flight. This one would only last about 30 minutes. And he would be the only passenger. In Dave Burrough’s canary yellow 1942 Boeing

Stearman.

Burroughs was taking Julien from the old Central Illinois Regional Airport to his farm in El Paso, with grass landing strip.

Christel, Steve and son Nathan, 19, were all there to see Julien off. As soon as the plane lifted off, Steve and Nathan hightailed it to El Paso to do a passenger swap. Julien would deplane and then it would be Nathan’s turn in the open air cockpit.

As Julien gave a big thumbs up from the plane, Christel snapped several photos to commemorate the flight. “I always like to send Julien’s mother photos of what he’s doing,” explained Christel. “But I ‘m not going to send these right away. I’ll wait till he lands.”

Answers to Common Estate Planning Questions and Misconceptions As an estate planning attorney, I routinely encounter many common estate planning questions and misconceptions.

Below are some brief answers to common questions and misconceptions.

4. Does having a will mean my estate will avoid probate?

1. Is estate planning only for the wealthy?

No. The truth is that almost everyone needs an estate plan regardless of income or net worth in order to minimize stress, unnecessary confusion, and costs for loved ones after a death. A basic estate plan consists of a will, power of attorney for property, power of attorney for healthcare, and sometimes a revocable living trust.

2. What is probate?

Probate is a court process of transferring legal title of property from a person who has died to that person’s heirs. Probate usually takes nine to 12 months to complete if there are no complications.

Probate can be avoided if an estate has little or no “probate assets.”

3. What is the difference between probate assets vs. non-probate assets?

Probate assets are assets that you own in your name only that DO NOT automatically transfer at your death. If you don’t have any probate assets in your estate, then your estate does not have to go through probate.

No. A will is a document that is used in the probate process – it doesn’t help avoid probate. A will is a document that states what happens to your probate assets when you die.

5. What happens if you don’t have a will?

If someone dies without a will then we look to Illinois law to see who inherits your probate assets. For example, Illinois provides that if someone is married with children when they die, then half of their probate assets will go to the surviving spouse and the other half of their probate assets are split among their children.

Many people prefer to have a will instead of letting the state decide who inherits their assets.

6. What is a revocable living trust and do you need one?

A revocable living trust (“RLT”) is a trust a person funds with their own assets when they are alive. A person that funds a trust is called a “grantor.” During the grantor’s lifetime, that person has complete control over the assets they transferred into their RLT. All assets in a RLT avoid probate when the grantor dies.

A RLT is a powerful estate planning tool that can be used to avoid probate, reduce estate taxes, and control assets long after the grantor’s death.

7. Do I need to worry about estate taxes?

Both Illinois and the federal government have their own estate tax. Illinois will tax an estate that is over $4 million when someone dies. For 2016, the federal government taxes estates that are over $5.45 million. Your “taxable estate” includes assets such as life insurance, retirement accounts, the equity in your home or other real estate, personal property, cash and other investments.

8. How can I give part of my estate to a charitable organization?

A few simple ways to help a charity through your estate plan are by naming them in a specific bequest in your will; giving a percentage of your retirement funds to a charity (saving on income tax); or naming a charity as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Many organizations have established foundations to help donors structure gifts through their estate. _________________________________ Chad A. labyrinth was recently dedicated at the Community Cancer Center in Normal as a part of its healing garden. Labyrinths have been around for over 4000 years and are found in most major spiritual traditions worldwide.

Only one path leads to the center of a labyrinth. People walk to the center while meditating and slowly walk out again. As your direction changes, your awareness shifts from right brain to left and back again. For many, this induces a more receptive state of awareness and spirituality.

The labyrinth is available for walking by anyone at any time of the day (407 E. Vernon). It can also be accessed from Constitution Trail behind the center.

What once was a vision has now become reality! n July 12, hundreds of residents, guests and dignitaries gathered under a spacious tent to celebrate the opening of the Healthcare Pavilion.

The Healthcare Pavilion will have 18 private rooms with private bathrooms.

Short-term rehabilitation nursing care will be for residents who require rehabilitation following a stay at the hospital.

Long-term nursing care will be for residents whose wellness depends on consistent day and night attention from healthcare professionals.

The Healthcare Pavilion completes the continuum of care for the Luther Oaks campus, which also includes independent living, assisted living, and memory support.

Final approval from Illinois Department of Public Health is anticipated for mid to late September at which time residents will have access to the Healthcare Pavilion.

t’s always a joy to find a tiny hummingbird nest (the size of a golf ball) well-disguised and hidden on a branch. Our ruby-throated young will all be flying south in September bulking up to a penny and a half ’s weight to make a flight of 1500-2000 miles to a place they’ve never been before...each flying alone with its internal compass guiding it. This nest was in a maple tree at the home of David and Karen Campbell, Normal.
