Hummingbirds Anonymous Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi

W

hen I started the Hummingbirds Anonymous group page on Facebook three years ago, I tagged it as being “for those who can’t go even a day without at least seeing a picture of a hummingbird”. Little did I ever imagine that within three years this open group would sky rocket to over 29,000 members (probably over 30,000 by the time this article is seen by you)!

This public group provided lots of surprises for me. For example, who would have thought people from all over the world would want to join it including authors of hummingbird identification books and some research people studying hummingbirds in Central and South America?

Even though the almost 350 species of hummingbirds in the world are found only in the Americas, people

all over the world are fascinated by these tiniest of birds and their magical qualities.

There are now six administrators including myself who monitor the page to admit new members, answer questions and take off any inappropriate posts or comments.

Besides the beautiful photos and videos shared by our members, we also allow hummingbird-themed art and merchandise to be displayed and new books or research findings on hummingbirds to be shared.

As a self-proclaimed hummingbird fanatic, Hummingbirds Anonymous has allowed me to share my passion for these tiny birds with others, who, in turn, share their hummer addictions with the rest of the group.

Normal’s water is colder, at least in summer: Since Bloomington’s water is supplied by above-ground lakes, it thus is warmed by the sun in summer and significantly cooler in winter. Normal’s water, meanwhile, is from underground wells and therefore is consistently maintained in a 50-55 degree range.

Savor the flavors

F

lip flops. Fireworks. Sun. Sand. It’s hard to imagine summer without these things. But for foodies, nothing says summer quite like the wafting aroma of a nearby barbecue. Whether you fancy brats and burgers, or steaks and kebabs, backyard cooking puts the sizzle in the season.

Now that the days are longer, and the school year has ended, many family meals happen outdoors. As you brush off the grill this season, are your limiting yourself to hot dogs and hamburgers?

There’s no need to do that. If you are looking for new ideas for your family meal time, you just may want to stop in to Bloomington Hy-Vee. The new kids on the grocery block are eager to be more than just your store. Just ask Steve Promenschenkel, meat and seafood chef.

“You know what, at the end of the day, we sell groceries. But by golly, we’re determined to be the best at it,” he offers.

“I’m very happy to help you with your meal choices, from catering to education — that’s what I’m here for.”

When it comes to service, Promencshenkel wants customers to

know he, and his staff, is always thinking of ways to be helpful. “I have a pretty unique role in that I get to create meals, and meet the special dietary concerns for our customers,” he said. “I can customize any item to your preference.”

With increasing consumer interest in whole foods, and doing more at-home meal preparation, the staff sat down to think about ways they could respond to the growing trend.

“There are a lot of online food services now, like Hello Fresh, or Blue Apron, for example, where they send you a box of stuff and note cards and then you’re on your own. I tried one - I won’t tell you which one - just to test it out. I made such a mess following those instructions, and it took a lot of time. Following the directions on those cards — I think I must have used every pan I owned.

I kept thinking, ‘What if this happened to someone who was brand new to cooking?’ They might feel completely defeated! I knew we could do better.”

So he and his team of dietitians worked to create a make-ahead meal program that he guarantees will be minimal mess and on your table in 30 minutes or less.

Going one step further, he even offers cooking demonstrations every Thursday to help the budding chef gain confidence.

“If you aren’t sure about something — let’s say swordfish, which is great on the grill by the way - ask! And, if you have

special dietary restrictions, like gluten free, call ahead, and we’ll do make ahead meals for you, too,” he says.

Promenschenkel remembers always having an interest in cooking, but his path, like most, didn’t follow a straight line. “It’s funny — I knew I wanted to be a chef even back when I was a student at Chiddix Junior High,” he recalls. “But,

instead I got a job at the Saturn dealership and worked there for 10 years. When the dealership closed, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to return my focus to my lifelong dream. I went to culinary school, got my degree, and now I’m very happy to be serving my community here at Hy-Vee.” For the novice chef, Promenschenkel recommends top sirloin for your barbecue. It’s his favorite cut of meat.

“It’s practically guaranteed to remain tender, even when it’s overcooked, which is easy to do when you’re grilling,” he says. “Marinades are nice — I particularly enjoy using marinades with seafood, but again, if you want ideas, come talk to me.

The key to successful steaks is being sure your cooking surface is pre-heated.

Season with salt and pepper and get a good sear on each side. Once you’ve cooked the meat to your liking, remove it from heat and let it rest, 10 to 20 minutes.

Resting allows the juices to redistribute, and ensures your meat won’t be dried out.

Adding an herbed butter is a nice touch to finish off your plating.
