Fall Drive Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi

I

t’s time to take a drive and see the fall color all around us. If you’re in town drive past the David Davis Mansion for some gorgeous tree color or stop by a neighbor’s backyard if they are experiencing great leaf color and fall birds. Better yet, drive into the country and check out the fields and the trees that line them. And don’t forget places nearby like Funks Grove that offer beautiful spots such as the Chapel in the Trees. Take a gander at those gorgeous sunsets, too. Now is the time to just get in the car and drive!

HOW ULTRASOUND IS USED TO DIAGNOSE VARICOSE VEINS

V

aricose veins are not always visible to the naked eye. You may not have the ropey, twisted veins on your legs but may have pain, swelling, redness and other symptoms often seen with varicose veins. Patients who may have varicose veins should be diagnosed using duplex ultrasound to check the blood flow in the leg veins. Duplex ultrasound is now the gold standard for assessing

blood flow in the leg veins of patients with suspected varicose veins. In this test, traditional ultrasound is combined with Doppler ultrasound to see both the veins and the movement mo ement of blood through the veins. The test is simple, painless and takes only a few minutes. A technician passes a small handheld device back and forth over your legs. The ultrasound image is projected on a video monitor for the physician to see. That image can be captured and made a part of your medical record. The results of the test

allow your doctor to see exactly where the malfunctioning valves are located and to effectively and efficiently plan your varicose vein treatment. Call The Vein Specialists at (309) 862-4000 to schedule a Consultation with one of our physicians or request an appointment online at www. ILveins.com. We have convenient locations in Bloomington, Eureka, Peru, eru, Springfield and Str Streator.

Bill Flick Your October 2016 BNI (Bloomington-Normal Index): • Just say no: Percentage of ISU freshmen who, according to a recent study, say they flatly oppose sex without love: 59 percent. At Illinois Wesleyan: 41 percent.

Bill Flick Columnist

• Pickett indeed: The very first AfricanAmerican on a U.S. Olympic team was not a transplant from Kenya or South Africa or Uganda but instead … University Street in Normal. In 1932, a student at Illinois State Normal University, Tidye Pickett made the U.S. Olympic team but was then replaced “because she was a negro.” A fighter of rights, privileges and racial inequality, by 1936, however, Pickett, of Chicago, was allowed to be a U.S. Olympian, as a hurdler, thus becoming the first. • A low slung ball cap and haven’t shaved for a week: If you’ve ever wanted to remain fully incognito in Bloomington-Normal, that apparently is one way. A few years ago, actor Jack Nicholson stayed in Room 502 at the DoubleTree in Bloomington. Here with a friend who was helping an ailing mother, Nicholson is said to have eaten “quite regularly” at a

TGIFridays that adjoins the hotel … “with a baseball cap tugged down his forehead and a week of facial growth” ... and Nicholson reportedly “was never bothered,” say those at the DoubleTree who remember the Jack Nicholson week. And let’s also face it -- almost never during a busy lunch hour in Bloomington do you expect to look across the bar and see Jack Nicholson, lunching by himself, over an order of Sriracha shrimp roll or bourbon barrel chicken. • What you might not read in the history books: While in Springfield, although against alcohol consumption himself, Abe Lincoln owned two taverns. • Where Chili Mac began: That now famed Chili Mac sauce you eat at any Steak ’n Shake in the world all began in a kitchen at 1110 E. Emerson in Bloomington. That was where Steak ’n Shake founder Gus Belt lived and with his wife, Edith, is alleged to have one night mixed ketchup with Worcestershire sauce and a dash of cocoa and began building a legend.

• The belly of the business: In the beginning, Potbelly was nothing more than a small antique shop with a potbelly stove in Chicago that also sold sandwiches. • Royal Flush: If you flush a toilet in downtown Bloomington and it is a bit “slow,” don’t be surprised. Some of the sewers in historic portions of downtown are made of wood and still working, installed as far back as the days of Lincoln and the 1860s. • “Oblong Man Marries Normal Woman”: Is a legendary joke and an alleged headline that appeared in The Pantagraph in the 1960s. But the original name of Oblong, the southcentral Illinois town of 1,500, would have potentially made the headline even funnier. Before it was named Oblong, it was named Henpeck. Normal Woman Marries Henpeck Man ... now that’s news, huh? Bill Flick is at bflick@pantagraph.com

Name: Bianca Abalos Age: 26 Business: State Farm Title: Underwriting Service Assistant Career highlights and/or accomplishments: I began my State Farm career in 2012 working for an agent in Rantoul and then made the transition of coming to corporate in 2015. I am currently serving as the Quality Champion on my team. Community involvement: I currently serve as the chair and instructor for Ballet Folklorico de Central Illinois. The dance group was formed in 2015 and focuses on the representation of traditional, folkloric dances of Mexico. We are 13 strong and even though the group can be a handful at times, I couldn’t imagine my Mondays and Wednesdays without them! I am also serving as vice chair for Conexiones Latinas and volunteer as much as possible at Cedar Ridge Elementary School in Bloomington. In three sentences describe your philosophy of life:: In my eyes, life should be nothing short of an adventure. Every day is a new beginning and could lead to something you never expected, which is why I try to stay as open minded as possible. I truly believe that things happen for a reason and luckily, for me, things have always fallen into place at the right time. Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher would have to be Mrs. Rodriguez, third grade. I was only 8 years old but I loved how encouraging she was and I’ll never forget our daily dose of “The Big Chill” soundtrack. Come to think of it, she probably was my favorite because there was always time for dancing in her class. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? I would love to join Julieta Venegas, a Mexican pop singer with incredible song compositions and one of the greatest bands I have ever seen live. What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? My purse! It’s more of a suitcase at this point, but it is home to my phone, iPod, makeup, daily planner and gum. All of the essentials! I would be lost without it! If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? I would love to go back to the late ’60s, early ’70s. My mom and aunts have so many stories of their younger years; all I picture is big cars, bell bottoms, and Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” playing in the background. Name: Tim Bassett Age: 31 Business: Advocate BroMenn Medical Center Title: Director of Facilities, Central Illinois Region Career highlights and/or accomplishments: During my tenure at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, I have had the opportunity to manage over $100 million in capital construction projects. I currently oversee all facility maintenance and operations for Advocate properties in the Central Illinois region. Creating and maintaining first-class facilities that contribute to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of those in our community is incredibly gratifying and rewarding. I recently earned my MBA from Southern Illinois University. Prior to that, I attended Illinois State University where I earned a bachelor of science degree in construction management before beginning my career in facility operations, planning, design, and construction. I served on active duty as an infantryman in the United States Army, including deployment to Iraq

in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, prior to attending college. Community involvement: I routinely assist in the Technology Department at Illinois State University by providing guest lectures for undergraduate and graduate courses, facilitating field trips to construction sites, and by providing assistance with research material. I am also a Construction Management Major Advisory Board member at ISU. I am actively involved in the McLean County Chamber of Commerce, most recently as a Leadership McLean County Class of 2016 graduate and LMC alumni committee member. I have been the president of the Central Illinois Chapter of Healthcare Engineers since 2014. In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: Embrace challenges when they present themselves and learn from past experiences. Always be resourceful, maintain a willingness to learn, and possess the ability to adapt to change. Enjoy the small things in life and live each day to the fullest. Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher also happened to be my high school football coach. Aside from the many lessons provided on the field, he was a great mentor and taught me the importance of being accountable to my family, teammates, and myself as I was developing into a young adult. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? Although I am certainly not talented enough to be a musician, I think I would most want to join a grunge rock group from the ’90s such as Pearl Jam or Nirvana. Music in this genre is what I grew up with and it defined an entire generation. What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? The one thing I couldn’t live without in my daily routine is being greeted by my wife, Jenna, and our three daughters, Ellysia, Eyla, and Emilia, upon returning home from a long day at the office. They are a wonderful support network and provide motivation to constantly challenge myself in pursuit of my full potential both personally and professionally. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? If I had the ability to travel back in time I would likely travel to the years of ancient Rome. Ancient history fascinates me and observing one of the world’s most predominant civilizations in its prime firsthand would be remarkable. Name: Amelia Buragas Age: 38 Business: Kelly Law Offices/Dorris Law Firm Title: Attorney Career Highlights / Accomplishments: I’ve had some great opportunities so far — a few that stand out in my memories are getting my first article published, arguing in front of the appellate court, and getting sworn in to the Bloomington City Council. Continue to learn and grow, even when you think you know everything. Most importantly, change lives for the better, when people succeed then I know I have. Who was your favorite teacher and why? Gretchen Sauer. I never saw myself as a leader in high school. She saw something in me and suggested that I become a DARE role model and director of Snowball, the drug prevention group. Because of Gretchen Sauer, I try to find the strengths of people I support that they may not see in themselves. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? The Monkees. I cannot play an instrument but I’m excellent at faking it. What is the one thing in your day that you cannot live without? Under Mr. Neuleib’s mentorship, I learned and developed the oral advocacy skills I continue to rely on today as an attorney. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? U2. What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? Waking up my three daughters each morning. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? 1948. Name: Liz Larson Age: 35 Business: WGLT 89.1-FM public radio, a service of Illinois State University Title: Business support manager Career highlights and/or accomplishments: My career path has been a long and winding road. I consider it my biggest accomplishment that I’ve finally found my place in the working world at WGLT. I spent a year working with survivors of domestic violence — facilitating support groups, advocating for people seeking orders of protection, and providing case management for women in shelter. My most fun job was working on an issue campaign during the 2008 Iowa caucus season. Founded by Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream fame, Iowans for Sensible Priorities allowed me to meet almost everyone running for president at the time, rub elbows with journalists from around the world, and talk with people in every corner of the state about reducing waste in the federal budget to better fund social needs like education and health care. Community involvement: I’m fundraising chair for Labyrinth Outreach Services to Women, an outstanding organization that provides support for women who are transitioning out of

incarceration. NEXT Professionals, the Chamber of Commerce under-40 organization, has given me some great opportunities to serve the community, including volunteering at the WBRP’s Tool Library. I’m a member of the Bloomington Rotary Club. I’m helping plan my very favorite annual event, Bike BloNo’s Tour de Taco, a social ride throughout Bloomington-Normal that supports local businesses, raises awareness of bicycles and improves safety and confidence among riders. In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: Other people are a lot easier to appreciate when you remember they’re all doing their best; sometimes their best isn’t great or up to your standards, but they’re trying, just like you. Despite our differences, our successes and failures, our life experiences, people are just people, no matter where they come from or what they do. Always choose fun, if it’s an option — you’re not going to get old and regret going to too many parties, dancing at too many concerts, or riding your bike too much. Who was your favorite teacher and why? So many educators have left their mark on me, it’s impossible to choose just one. Mrs. Hughbanks, my third- and fourth-grade teacher, showed me how to be a leader. From Mrs. Knight, a high school English teacher, I learned to give people the benefit of the doubt. My favorite professor at Bradley, Dr. Hong Cheng, helped me understand that passion and drive make the career, not the prospect of financial stability. Dr. Phyllis McCluskey-Titus at ISU taught me it’s never too late to continue your education. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? Some of my favorite musicians are Doomtree , Chicago Farmer and CAKE. What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? Hate to be this cliché, but I cannot function without coffee. Iced or hot, Coffee Hound or Folger’s… it matters not. I’m a huge fan/addict. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve longed to meet my grandfathers, both of whom died before I was born. My parents have always told such rich, interesting stories about them, complete with words to live by like, “He who hesitates is lost.” In life and in death, they made my parents who they are — the most hardworking, funny, generous, supportive, and, above all, loving people I know. So I’d travel back to the early 1960s and have a beer with the granddads I never got to meet. Name: Megan McCann Age: 31 Business: Illinois State University Conference Services Title: Program Coordinator Career highlights and/or accomplishments: I am a proud graduate of Leadership McLean County Class of 2015. It was also an honor to receive the 2014 NEXT Professional of the Year award. Community involvement: I am currently the president of NEXT Professionals through the Chamber of Commerce and have been a member for eight years. I’ve spent nine years as the silent auction manager for the State Farm Holiday Classic Tournament Committee. I am the secretary of the Bloomington Normal Hotel Lodging Association. I am also active with Leadership McLean County and volunteer my time with Special Olympics, Easter Seals, and The Salvation Army. In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: Life is a gift that goes too quickly and therefore I do not take the day-to-day challenges too seriously. I do not waste time or energy focusing on regrets from my past, but instead take those life experiences and appreciate who I am today because of them. At the end of each day, my goal is to positively make a difference in the lives of everyone I encounter, be joyful in all that I do, and serve others. Who was your favorite teacher and why? Not my teacher, but my

favorite coach was Mike Bradford who is an outstanding leader. He was my basketball coach from fourth grade through 12th grade. Sure, I learned a lot about the game, went to the state tournament, and had some ankle injuries along the way, but he taught me more about life than anyone else. I learned how to work hard, communicate, not to quit, how to handle problems, what is means to be a leader and so much more. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? I would have to say Red Hot Chili Peppers or Mumford and Sons! What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? COFFEE, but who can’t live without that? I’m going to have to say Excel spreadsheets! That might be the world’s greatest invention! If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? 1992 – I would do anything for one more family Christmas dinner with my grandparents and one more day where all my worries in the world were if I wanted Lucky Charms or Cap’n Crunch for breakfast. Name: Julie McCoy Age: 34 Business: District 87, Bloomington Public Schools Title: Director of Food/Nutrition Services Career highlights and/or accomplishments: I received my School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) certificate and received a Karyl Rickard Pediatric Nutrition Scholarship from IUPUI to use for Pediatric Wellness initiatives in our district. I also received We Choose

Community involvement: I am active in the McLean County Wellness Coalition and currently on leadership team. I am also a preceptor to Illinois State University students (dietetic interns, food service management students, health education students). In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: I read a quote once that said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” I believe we are all given gifts that we are meant to develop and share. We must also help others develop and share their gifts. Most importantly, we must be grateful for all that life sends our way! Who was your favorite teacher and why? My dad — he encouraged me to always ask “why?” He really helped me to be a critical thinker and learn the how and why of things which has really helped me out in all areas of my life! If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? I can’t say I would ever be in a band, BUT I would have fun going back to the Big Band era and being a swing dancer! What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? Prayer and faith! If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? I would stay right here in 2016. I have evolved into the person I am from my life experiences and I don’t want to go back, just enjoy the place I am in and keep moving forward! AND I would miss my kids too much! Name: Kaitlin Muckey Age: 27 Business: DoubleTree by HiltonBloomington Title: Director of Sales Career highlights and/or accomplishments: I was named NEXT Professional of the Year 2012, Hilton Spirit of CARE winner 2015 and Illinois Hotel Lodging Association regional nominee multiple years. Community involvement: I am a board member and past president of McLean Country Chamber of Commerce NEXT Professionals.I am also a committee volunteer for Special Olympics winter dinner and summer games. I volunteer for Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and Midwest Food Bank. I also work hand-in-hand with over 15 different nonprofit organizations to make sure their annual fundraisers go off without a glitch! Those nonprofits include ABC Counseling, McLean County Chamber of Commerce, OSF Hospital, Wish Bone Canine Rescue, Humane Society of Central Illinois, Heartland Community College, Illinois Heart and Lung Foundation and Special Olympics. In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: Everything in life happens for a reason. We might not know what that reason is right now, but it happened for a reason. We might not ever know what the reason truly was. Who was your favorite teacher and why? My fifth-grade science teacher Mrs. Smigel was my favorite teacher. She was an awesome role model for young girls. She always encouraged me to play to my strengths and the weaknesses would not show. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? Spice Girls What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? Coffee; no one wants to talk to me in the morning before I have had at least one cup. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? The ’80s. I feel like I truly missed out on a decade that I would have fit in with. From the music, to the clothes, I could have totally rocked leg warmers and would have enjoyed being there when women becoming more of a powerful asset in the workplace.

I completed my master of science in organizational communication in 2010, also from Illinois State University. I spent several years in the nonprofit sector and served as both interim director of Volunteer Services at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and director of marketing and public relations at the YWCA McLean County. In fall 2013, I returned to ISU as an academic adviser and lecturer in the School of Communication. Throughout my time in these positions, I have been fortunate enough to have been recognized as a 25 under 25 honoree through McLean County’s Global Youth Service Day, a Crystal Award recipient through the Association for Women in Communications, a back-to-back Impact Award recipient at ISU, and completed both the Multicultural Leadership Program in 2014 and the McLean County Leadership Program in 2016. Community involvement: Association for Women in Communication: president and ISU faculty adviser 2016-present, president elect & ISU faculty adviser 2015-2016, community involvement chair 2014-2015, community involvement chair 20132014; McLean County Chamber of Commerce NEXT Professionals: marketing chair 2014-present, programming committee 2014-present, MAX in Action Committee 2015-present; McLean County Leadership Program, Class of 2016: social committee 2015-2016, Leadership Launch committee 2016-present; Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington Normal: resource development 2013- 2016; Multicultural Leadership Program, Class of 2014: marketing and technology chair 2015-2016, marketing and technology committee 2014-2015; Peaceful Schools committee: board secretary 2012-2016; Rebound Council (mentoring program at Kingsley Junior High): board secretary 2012-2016. In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: Life is about living with integrity, learning, growing, and seeking your ultimate potential; in order to continue to grow, we have to continue to learn and understand where we can become better. I believe life and the person we become are developed through a series of lessons we learn throughout our time. In order to live my best life, I have to continue to grow and learn more about myself and others. Who was your favorite teacher and why? Dr. Mary Anne Moffitt was my absolute favorite teacher for both my undergraduate degree and master’s degree at Illinois State University. Each day before class would begin, Dr. Moffitt would share a fun fact or current event with the class and say, “See…it’s fun to be smart!” I concur; it is fun to be smart! Dr. Moffitt instilled this desire in me at a young age and it has been something that’s stuck with me throughout my life. Being my best self is all about learning and growing as an individual, which has led me to not only recognize my potential, but also maintain and build relationships effectively, and serve my community in a way that enhances the lives of others. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? Yellowcard! When I first met my husband back in high school (when pop-emo was trendy!), he introduced me to this band and it was the first thing we connected over What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? In the sense of the abstract, I would have to say that I cannot live a day without my core values. My family (which includes my furry family of mutts, Dexter and Snoopy!) and friends are certainly the most important thing in the world to me. If this question is meant to be taken in the more literal sense, I would have to say that I cannot go a day without my Chapstick. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? In all honestly, if the opportunity presented itself to me to travel back in time, I do not think I would take it. Life is in front, not behind.

In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: Say thanks and never stop giving thanks. Laugh and be goofy – you never know when someone needs to see your smile. Be the first – the first to lend a hand, the first to give a compliment, the first to do the right thing. Who was your favorite teacher and why? Dr. Michael Burns (formerly School of Communication at North Dakota State University). He was able to connect with every individual in a lecture hall of 200-plus students each semester and brought real-life examples to class each and every day – more than any teacher I’ve ever had. He called his exams “Celebrations of Knowledge.” If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? Although I have no musical talent whatsoever, I’d love to play bass for B.B. King – he put on a show! What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? My wife. She is my rock and my best friend. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? 1980 – as a sports professional, being able to witness the “Miracle on Ice” at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics would have been an unforgettable experience. In three sentences, describe your philosophy of life: Work hard. Be nice to everyone. Never, ever give up. Who was your favorite teacher and why? He was not a teacher per se, but my junior high basketball coach at Trinity Lutheran School, Mr. John Colclasure. His encouragement went far beyond the sports environment. The qualities he helped instill in me such as hard work, compassion, cooperation, loyalty, and determination helped influence me toward personal growth and success. He had a tremendous impact on my life. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? Probably the Mandrell sisters, although any 1970s

female country singer would do. I love the big hair, I love the long beaded gowns, and I love the glamour! What is the one thing in your day you can’t live without? Reading. My first major accomplishment was helping our amazing Extending Excellence capital campaign committee exceed its $3 million goal. My previous broadcasting career at WJBC included several national awards for news, but the best highlight was our Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in 2008-2009. The team of people I worked with that year represented the very best of what we could do! Community involvement: Bloomington-Normal Airport Authority Board; BN Advantage Marketing/Communications Task Force; Downtown Signage Committee; Lincoln’s Festival in Bloomington; David Davis Mansion; Glorious Garden Walk & Festival; David Davis

As a company, we couldn’t be prouder to have one of RE/MAX Choice’s Realtors recognized as a recipient in the Pantagraph’s 2016 20 Under 40 program. Making a difference in the community, achieving significant career accomplishments and showing a likelihood of future success and leadership are just a few characteristics that a panel of judges were looking for. GREAT JOB AMANDA!

Mansion Foundation, president 2013, board member 2009-2014; Girl Scouts Troop co-leader 2009-2016; advocate for multiple domestic violence and child protection efforts In three sentences describe your philosophy of life: If you’re sitting on the sidelines of life, you’re missing all the fun. More importantly, you’re missing a chance to make a difference for yourself and others who don’t have the same opportunities. Just don’t be afraid to fail or ask for help. Who was your favorite teacher and why? I was lucky to have my parents as teachers both in life and in the classroom. They pushed me to expect more of myself than “good enough” and to say yes to new opportunities that took me beyond my perceived and real boundaries. If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join? My family performed as “Slim Douglas and the Golden Sisters” in the 1950s. They played with Elvis in Mississippi at one point, and I’d give anything to join them for that show. Mostly I’d love to see my grandparents in their prime as they experienced the early days of rock ‘n’ roll. What is the one thing in your day that you can’t live without? People! I’m blessed to have made many meaningful connections with people across this community. Without them, daily life would be much less interesting and certainly harder when times are tough. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? For the fashion alone, the 1920s are quite alluring. However, I’m confident the best time for me is now. Name: Amy Wohlford Age: 30 Business: Fort Jesse Imaging & Gale Keeran Center for Women Title: Marketing Career highlights and/or accomplishments: 2014 AHRA Excellence in Medical Imaging Marketing Award, Growing our volumes through consumer and physician marketing and consistently obtaining 99 percent patient satisfaction over the past three years — huge accomplishment on behalf of our whole team! I

n 2012 a committee of 12 was formed to foster agriculture, history, art, barns and farmers in McLean County. Our goal was to create 50 barn quilts in 5 years with local published poets writing a poem about each barn quilt, its location and its owners. That goal has been met with 52 quilts decorating local structures, including Westminster Village, Sugar Grove Nature Center, Ropp Cheese Farm, Rader Family Farms, David Davis Mansion, Heyworth Public Library, Military Museum in Heyworth, Corn Belters stadium, and many local farms.

T

he ATHENA Leadership Award recognizes outstanding individuals in our community defined as role models for others to emulate who inspire and encourage the empowerment of women leaders. Named for Athena, the Greek goddess of intelligence and wisdom, arts and sciences, this award celebrates individuals who have achieved excellence in their profession, served the community and assisted and mentored women in their attainment of professional goals and leadership skills. Because of the rich history and international scope of this award, it is one of the most prestigious awards one can receive. Please meet the nominees for 2016 McLean County Chamber of Commerce ATHENA Leadership Award. NAME: Linda Isaacson Healy TITLE: WGLT Events & Outreach Director CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND/OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I’ve had an exciting and interesting career that includes spending 25 years as a working artist in my own jewelry business (with over 400 accounts across the country from museums and galleries to Nordstrom’s and Coldwater Creek); running a wildly successful arts program for children; and creating and implementing fundraising events for WGLT for the last 12 years. I love having to think on my feet to find solutions for the unexpected surprises that pop up along the way. However, what gives me the greatest sense of satisfaction and pride is the light bulb going on when I’m tutoring a second-grader; or the grateful smile of a single mom in New Orleans as I swung a hammer beside hers to raise the frame of her new Habitat home. VISION FOR LEADERSHIP: Leadership to me is recognizing a problem, finding a solution, and hopefully inspiring others along the way. We are all creative with fresh ideas to share. We all have gifts to offer those who are less fortunate – there is nothing more important than giving of your time, and energy to others. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: I love adventure and travel and always look for the back roads. I love physical challenges and have spent time crewing for a hot air balloon pilot, rock climbing, white water rafting, biking, sail boarding, canoeing, and cross country skiing. I believe in the power of earth in my hands and love to garden. I still spend as much time as I can in the quieter, more introspective pursuits of jewelry-making and reading. Year, Normal Rotary Foundation board, Friends Forever advisory board and activities director, Oakdale Promise Council founding member and current director, For a Better Tomorrow YICU Awards board member, Habitat for Humanity Women Build volunteer. NAME: Maureen Svob TITLE: Learning and Behavior Specialist CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND/OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: McLean County YWCA’s Women of Distinction Education Award recipient, facilitator of an after-school girls’ mentoring and kindness group called SHINE, helped develop and implement lessons for students needing social-emotional support, professional development and master’s level training in the areas of social thinking and autism. Mentor in Bloomington Public Schools, District 87, Irving Scholarship Committee coordinator, partner with ISU as a cooperating teacher for 25 years, master’s of education in curriculum and instruction. VISION FOR LEADERSHIP: SHINE is an after-school mentoring program for fourth- and fifth-grade girls at Irving Elementary. I am privileged to coordinate and facilitate this program, which focuses on kindness to reduce bullying. For the past three years, various groups of girls have participated in a book study, been motivated to journal, listened to women from our community share their stories of kindness and opportunity, created items to share and treasure as well as enjoyed each other’s company while growing, inspiring and challenging one another. My vision is for these girls to have such an impact on their families, friends, and the community that kindness is noticed, practiced and valued. My desire is that they would SHINE, and spread kindness wherever they go. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: Reading, exercising, spending time laughing with and loving family and friends YOUR CHARITY OR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICULAR ROLES WITH THOSE GROUPS: Crossroads Chapel nursery coordinator, Special Olympics supporter and volunteer, Woman to Women Giving Circle participant.

NAME: M. Katherine Wills TITLE: Vice President and Private Client Manager CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND/OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I often think that I am rather late to the career party, having devoted my attention to raising my two children. And when the time was right, a part-time position in a trust department launched what has become a very rewarding career. After working in the financial industry in Bloomington-Normal, navigating through several bank mergers and ultimately becoming a financial adviser, I received an offer to interview for a position with Northern Trust in Chicago. The position was to serve trust departments and financial advisers across the country in their investment research needs, utilizing the resources available at the most prestigious fiduciary of Northern Trust. I was chosen out of a field of candidates and spent six years working in that capacity. I consider this to be the ultimate accomplishment of my career – to not only navigate Northern Trust but to become an integral piece of our clients’ lives and meet their needs at the highest level of service. VISION FOR LEADERSHIP: My vision for leadership is to strive to be one’s genuine self, to live every aspect of your life in the same manner…..all the while, being conscious of those needing not only our leadership but an outstretched hand. Be thoughtful, be consistent, smile with all your heart and say yes with sincerity and enthusiasm. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: My leisure time diversion always involves my home and my favorite people – good food and drink and lots of music, conversation and laughter. My favorite stress buster at the end of a tough day is a visit with my dear grandson, then home to comfy clothes, a glass of wine and a stack of magazines and a good novel…and dinner on our wonderful porch with my husband. YOUR CHARITY OR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICULAR ROLES WITH THOSE GROUPS: I serve on the board of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation and also was on the committee for the Power of the Purse event – a wonderful event to support WomenBuild for Habitat for Humanity. I find myself drawn toward events that support women and families. However, the personal charity extended by me is always to be a shoulder for others in my path who need a little sympathy, empathy and simply love to get through their day.

NAME: Julie Workman TITLE: Vice President, Marketing & Business Development, MidIllini Credit Union CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND/OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 26 years of successful experience in marketing, advertising and sales, 10 of those years as a team leader; digital marketing professional; Google AdWords authorized reseller; social media marketing expert; exceptional writing and presentation skills; persuasive and passionate public speaker. Awarded Paul Harris Fellowship, Bloomington Rotary Club 2015, Shoop Shift Award for Excellence in Communications 2013, CUNA Diamond Award Winner, Website Marketing 2012, Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor, CCUFC Designation earned 2011. VISION FOR LEADERSHIP: I believe that attitude is everything when it comes to success as a leader, at work and in life. One of Henry Ford’s most famous quotes says it all: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.” Good leaders must always make sure that their teams know that there is room for everyone to succeed. One person’s success does not have to come at the price of someone else’s failure. You always get back what you give. If your intentions and execution are the best that they can be and your motives are honorable, everyone on your team will succeed, which sets your organization up with a new generation of leaders who, going back to our quote, will always “think they can.” So then, they will. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: Reading, writing and watching science fiction shows on BBC America. YOUR CHARITY OR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICULAR ROLES WITH THOSE GROUPS: Rotary Club of Bloomington: club member 2012 – present, program committee member 2012, service committee member 2012 - 2014, board of directors 2015 – 2017, service committee chairperson 2015 – 2017. McLean County Chamber of Commerce: Make Your Money Mean More Marketing Committee member 2016, Twin Cities Showcase Planning Committee member 2012-2014, committee chairperson 2015 and 2016. Illinois Credit Union League, Bloomington Chapter: Board of Directors 2014 – present, Illinois Youth Involvement Committee chairperson 2015 – present. Money Smart Week, Bloomington-Normal committee member 2010-2011, marketing committee chairperson 2012 and 2013.
