NOT BY SIGHT

A Memoir of 40 Years in Education Peter Tan Chong Tze “Despite my challenges, including the lost of sight, I feel tremendously blessed to be a blessing.” Over the course of 24 years, Peter Tan Chong Tze was Principal of three schools: Anglo-Chinese School ( Junior), Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), and Queensway Secondary School. Not by Sight is a testament to the perseverance with which he soldiered on through the ups and downs in his life, from childhood to his retirement at 63. The hand of God upon him was such that, his desire to become a missionary shifted to the calling to be a teacher – only to be challenged by a condition that would lead to blindness, resulting in his being asked to leave teacher training. But, miraculously, he was allowed to continue and embark on a long and meaningful career in which he encountered situations that uplifted his values and beliefs. He was also enabled by grace to overcome the hurts of being raised in a family with an absent father and journey with others to arrive at the place of familial forgiveness and reconciliation. Students, parents and educators will be encouraged and motivated by his honest and sincere sharing of what he has learnt through the varied experiences of his career and life. Fly and Sunbird go to the Tallest Tree. High in the canopy, they are surrounded by forest. Bird songs fill the air.

Fly points to a Tembusu tree and says, “I’ll glide to that tree over there.” She jumps off. Her webbed feet catch the wind and she glides effortlessly across. Sunbird stares in wonder at Fly’s fabulous flight.

Sunbird flaps over. “Well done!” he says. “Thanks. It was fun!” Fly exclaims. “The morning breeze helped.”

“There are yummy bugs here,” says Fly, catching one with her tongue. “And many flowers,” adds Sunbird, taking a sip of nectar. The friends enjoy a good breakfast.

7

“My friends can fly too. And they are not birds, bats or bugs,” Fly reveals.

“Why don’t we have a flying contest?” Sunbird suggests.

“Want to meet them?”

“Great idea!” Fly agrees.

“We’ll see who can fly the fastest.”

“Yes, I do!” Sunbird exclaims.

On the day of the contest, the animals gather at the Tallest Tree. Fly introduces her friends. “This is Colugo,” says Fly. “Hello,” Colugo says as he waves, revealing a huge flappy skin connecting his limbs and tail.

“This is Tree Snake,” says Fly. “You look like a normal snake!” Sunbird exclaims. Tree Snake laughs and says, “Yes, but unlike ordinary snakes, I can flatten my body to catch the wind.”

Once upon a time, there was a little brown mouse who liked to scamper about beneath the trees and leaves in the jungle.

The lion leapt to his feet and trapped the mouse in his giant paws. “How dare you wake me!” he growled. “As punishment, you will be my afternoon snack!” She padded down on the lion’s paw as quietly as she could, but it was enough to stir the Lion. One eye beamed open, followed by a rumbling ROOAAAR!

“No, please sir, King of the jungle... I didn’t mean to disturb you!” squealed the mouse. “If you let me go, I will be forever grateful. And I will return your kindness one day.”

10

The lion laughed. “How could such a little animal like you ever help so great an animal as me?” All the same, the lion was amused by her confidence and decided to let the little mouse go.

Not long after, when the mouse was out scampering around in the undergrowth, she heard a loud roar.

The mouse scuttered away as fast as she could and hid safely out of sight. She was truly thankful that the great lion had let her go.

She shivered with fear and considered running away, but decided to find out what had made such a loud noise. She soon came upon a small clearing in the trees. There, she saw that the lion had gotten caught in a hunter’s trap.

One day, a hungry crocodile swam up to the bank. He noticed the monkey in the tree. “Dear monkey, I am so hungry. Do you have any food that you can share with me?”

“Yes,” the crocodile replied and opened his jaws, showing all his teeth. The monkey calmly threw a few apples down.

The monkey was startled as he knew the crocodile could eat him in one gulp. But he put aside his fears and said, “This tree has lots of delicious apples. Would you like to try some?”

“These are delicious! Thank you so much,” said the crocodile happily. Then he slipped back into the river and swam home.

At sunrise the next morning, the crocodile returned. “Those apples were scrumptious. May I have some more please?” “Of course,” replied the monkey. “There is plenty to go around.” “You’re too kind,” said the crocodile.

From that day on, the crocodile would visit the monkey every day. Besides filling their bellies with apples, they would share wonderful stories about the lagoon, and laugh and joke between themselves.

13

One day, the monkey asked where the crocodile lived. “I live on an island in the middle of the lagoon with my family. Speaking of which, it’s getting late and I should get going.” “See you tomorrow, my friend,” said the monkey.

As the days passed, their friendship grew.

“See you soon,” said the crocodile as he disappeared under the surface of the water.

When he was at the top, the monkey shouted down, “Crocodile, we were friends, but you were taking me to be dinner for your family!” The crocodile admitted that he had not been a good friend to the kind monkey. “I am very sorry,” he bawled.

The monkey watched the crocodile drift sadly away. He was sad too, but felt relieved to be alive. He sat back, picked a juicy apple and resumed his life as before.

By chance, a rabbit came by. “Let me out of this cage, oh rabbit, please!” cried the tiger. “I can’t,” replied the rabbit. “You’d probably eat me if I did.”

The tiger wept and begged and pleaded, and the rabbit’s heart softened. He unlatched the door of the cage.

“Not at all!” swore the tiger. “On the contrary, I will be forever grateful,” he pleaded.

The tiger leapt out and pounced on the poor rabbit. “What a fool you are! Why should I not eat you now?”

“But you swore not to eat me. You said you would be grateful. This isn’t fair!” said the rabbit.

“What do you have to complain about? Don’t I provide shade and shelter to everyone? Yet in return, they cut down my branches! Stop whining!”

First, the rabbit asked a tree what she thought.

“Silly rabbit! I’ll spare your life if you can find anyone who agrees that this is not fair,” growled the tiger.

16

Next, the rabbit asked the footpath for its opinion. Then the rabbit came across a horse pulling a cart. “You are a fool to expect gratitude. Look at me! I work hard to pull these loads, yet instead of letting me run free, they keep me tethered all day long.”

“Dear rabbit,” said the footpath, “what do you expect? I am useful to everyone, but does anyone ever stop to thank me?

At this, the tiger lost patience. He jumped into the cage and cried, “This way! Now do you understand?”

The tiger immediately realised that this was his own doing. He should not have gone back on his word to the kind little rabbit.

“I do!” grinned the jackal, as he calmly shut the door. “And I think it’s best to leave things as they were!”

The rabbit thanked the jackal for his help, glad to have made a new friend.

Tok Panjang

The Evolution of a Peranakan Heritage Feast ARTHUR S K LIM

The legacy of Tok Panjang, the Peranakan dining experience, is so exuberantly presented here. The insights into the contexts of how Peranakan dishes were served, is one of the book’s most valuable contributions from a historical context. Peter Lee, Peranakan scholar and Founding Curator of NUS Baba House Tok Panjang is known simply today as a sumptuous, iconic Peranakan banquet of a wide range of classic, signature dishes. Some may know that the name is derived from tok, the Hokkien word for ‘table’, and panjang, Malay for ‘long’. Others might also understand that Tok Panjang is a communal celebratory meal served on birthdays, weddings and other festive occasions. This book delves into the origin of the practice, back to when the name Tok Panjang did not exist. It sets out specific menus and explains when and why designated dishes were served together on particular types of crockery. Arthur S K Lim traces Tok Panjang to its roots and describes its evolution with reference to his family’s practice and traditions. In the process, he shares his mother’s time-tested recipes for the dishes that make up the various Tok Panjang feasts. A collection of tales that record literary author Meira Chand's own personal passage to India.

The Pink, White and Blue Universe – and Other Stories Synopsis The Pink, White and Blue Universe – and other stories is a collection of tales that record Meira Chand's own personal passage to India. Set in the colour drenched chaos of Mumbai, these stories weave together the elements of faith, sensuality, hope and pathos that pervade the many corners of life in India. Ranging from tender and poignant to darkly comic, the stories in this collection are peopled by characters cast adrift and left in states of unfamiliar bewilderment as they navigate their way through a society that is at once both humane and pitiless. India delivers to these characters moments of reckoning as they confront complexities and contradictions at the heart of themselves. About the Author Born and educated in London, Meira Chand is of Swiss-Indian parentage. She studied art at St Martin’s School of Art & Design and later taught art at an international school in Japan before turning to writing. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Western Australia. Her life is lived between East and West and the concept of Home is multifaceted. In 1962 she moved from London to Japan, living there until 1971, when she left to spend five years in India. In 1976 she returned again to Japan, residing there until 1997, when she relocated to Singapore, where she now lives. In 2011 she became a Singapore citizen. Her multi-cultural heritage and the confluence of different cultures in her life is reflected in her novels, which explore issues of identity, belonging and cultural dislocation. Five of her novels are set in Japan – The Gossamer Fly (1979), Last Quadrant (1981), The Bonsai Tree (1983), The Painted Cage (1986) and A Choice of Evils (1996). Contemporary India is the location of House of the Sun (1989) that, in 1990, was adapted for the stage in London where it had a successful run at Theatre Royal Stratford East. It was the first Asian play, with an all-Asian cast and direction, performed in London. The play was voted “Critic’s Choice” by Time Out magazine. Also set in India, but in Calcutta during the early days of the Raj, A Far Horizon (2001) considers the notorious story of the Black Hole of Calcutta. Set against the backdrop of Singapore, A Different Sky (2010) follows the lives of three families through the 30 tumultuous years leading up to Singapore’s independence. On its publication, the novel was a “Book of the Month choice” by the UK bookshop chain, Waterstones, and was on Oprah Winfrey’s recommended reading list. It was also long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2012. Her novel, Sacred Waters (2017), moves between two timelines, stretching from India to Singapore and Burma, and is a compelling exploration of two women’s struggle to assert themselves in male-dominated societies of the past and the present. In Singapore she is involved in many programmes to promote literature and mentor young writers. She is a board member of the National Arts Council.

I Paint My Singapore Familiar Scenes of Home YIP YEW CHONG “A common trait of all my art works is that they are intricately detailed and tell stories,

especially of my childhood memories, a bygone era or lost place; and at times, mixed with present day real scenes in a whimsical manner. I hope the artworks will evoke in the audience a sense of warmth in their hearts and fond personal nostalgia; and they in turn, will be inspired to tell their own stories. By the way, that’s me on the book cover – chillaxing on a rooftop, enjoying a panoramic view of our Singapore.” This book contains Yip Yew Chong’s gift to Singapore, the epic 60m-long, 27-canvas painting of our island home in its bygone days. Many of these scenes of the 1970s and 1980s are no more, but come alive once again in these pages, each spread depicting an area with their iconic buildings and way of life. Look carefully and see soldiers carrying concertina wire, Ah Mei and Ah Shui from The Awakening, the Jurong Bird Park waterfall, a kacang putih man, snake charmers, mahjong players, the National Theatre, break dancers and many, many more nostalgic details. And, yes, there is a Sikh gentleman riding his bicycle through many of the scenes.

NEW TITLE INFORMATION Book details: ISBN-13: 9789811882784 Title: SINGAPORE IN THE 70s Price: S$18.26 before 9% GST (S$19.90 after GST). RM59.90 Author(s): Suresh & Syed. James Suresh is author. Syed Ismal is illustrator. Publisher: Training Plus International Size: 210 x 145 mm (landscape) Extent: 180 pages Publication Date: February 2024 Synopsis of ‘Singapore in the 70s’ ‘Singapore in the 70s is a follow up to the last book ‘Singapore in the 60s.’ which was written and published by James Suresh to celebrate Singapore’s fiftieth anniversary. The book received an SG50 grant and has gone into second print since its launch. Singapore in the 70s is a personal recollection of the author’s experiences as a teenager growing up in Singapore at a time of rapid modernisation and cultural change. Through his personal recollections he takes us on a journey back to the 70s when the hippie movement was in full swing. The authorities had to introduce drastic measures like ‘operation snip snip’ to discourage young men from spotting long hair which was associated with drugs and the hippie culture. We also get a glimpse of the fashion in the 70s from bell bottoms to miniskirts and platform shoes. Younger readers will get an idea of what their parents or grandparents did for recreation and entertainment at a time when there was no internet, computers, social media, mobile phones, and cable TV. Through personal recollections the author also captures the golden age of entertainment in Singapore when many local recording artistes made it big not only in this region but as far away as Europe and the US. Singapore’s only female movie hero, Cleopatra Wong is also featured together with sports icons of the 70s. Major happenings in the 70s including disasters, odd events like the escape of a panther and a hypo from the Singapore zoo as well as the launch of Singapore’s own brand of TV are covered with a touch of humour. The first drive in restaurant, the one and only drive in cinema in Jurong, the first MacDonalds outlet and many other forgotten events and places are revived with fondness and nostalgia. The last chapter describes the author’s experience as a national serviceman in 70s when the SAF was still in its infancy and resources were limited. The author describes what it was like then including the enlistment procedures, the living conditions, the food, the training, and the facilities and compares them to the experiences of the national servicemen today. As is usually the case, every generation of national servicemen believes that his time was the worst and that the present generation are having it easy.
