ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2006

PROGRAM Design an apartment tower on the corner of Grand & Layfette in Manhattan with each unit containing two bedroom & bath. While allocating the ground floor for commercial tenants.

SOLUTION The organizational system of the building divides the structure into three spaces; public/retail, private/residential, and circulation.

Public spaces are restricted to the street level, pulling its vocabulary from surrounding retail to fit within the community. The private spaces yearn to set themselves apart from the surrounding architectural vocabulary, by twisting and turning its shape to become the dominant feature of the neighborhood. Finally, the circulation has constricted all of its elements into one single mass, which wedges itself into the structure, servicing all areas of the tower.

ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2004

PROGRAM Design an installation on Iowa State University’s campus, based on the precedent of Mary Miss’ Field Rotation.

SOLUTION The installation cannot be fully experienced by casual observation but only through the process of moving through the piece. The

majority of the structure is submerged, so the passerby only sees a single illuminated spire emerging from the ground. Upon closer investigation, the observer realizes that this same geometry is repeated in the horizontal plane below grade. The observer has the ability to explore the spaces around the structure below grade, blocking out all views of the surrounding environment and focusing them all on the structure’s two axis. One, which is limited by the walls of the enclosure juxtaposed by a second, which diverts the attention vertically out of the enclosure.

contemplation containers ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2005

PROGRAM iIn a densely wooded park in Ames, IA, design two small spaces with a path connecting them. One space must be enclosed from the elements and the other open to them.

SOLUTION The two spaces are in direct opposition with each other. One space is partially submerged restricting an inhabitant’s view of

what is above them, forcing them to become more aware of the horizontal views of the site. A bridge emerges from this space, connecting to the next space. This bridge reconnects the inhabitant with the whole site again. The second space is raised high above the ground and only allows the inhabitant to experience the views up through the tree canopy to the sky above.

ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY FALL 2004

PROGRAM Create a visual representation of the verb envelop by means of the materials steel and copper. SOLUTION Envelop - (v. en-vel-uhp) - to surround entirely

Based on this definition and the ductile possibilities of the given materials, a piece was created where both materials are constantly enveloping each other.

iowa winery ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY FALL 2005

PROGRAM At the base of the Kate Shelly High Bridge located in central Iowa, design a small-scale winery & vineyard, including retail and banquet spaces.

SOLUTION The winery is organized by clear lines of separation based on the public and private functions of the facility. The smallest

geometry is allocated to the commercial/public functions focusing on the views out to the vineyard. While the long base organizes the private/production area of the winery giving a clear delineation of the process to which the wine is made.

ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2007

While living in Rome I became enamored with the Ponte Sant’Angelo, particularly Bernini’s twelve angels that line the bridge and create a procession for pilgrims to Saint Peter’s Basilica. The work attempts to capture the sculptures majesty, detailing, orientation in space, and ideology.

graduate student housing PARTNER :: ALEX MURMAN

ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY FALL 2007

PROGRAM Design a graduate student housing complex for Iowa State Univeristy, based upon the specific needs of this specific type of student and their families.

SOLUTION After researching the housing needs of Ames Iowa, we discovered a significant shortage of graduate student housing. This is

mostly due to the diversity of this specific student population, which includes everyone from traditional students, students with families, and foreign nationals. In our solution we developed a complex that begins to meet these diverse needs by supplying a multitude of housing options for the growing graduate student population.

montreal mediatheque PARTNERS :: Bob Perry & Randy Miller ACADEMIC :: IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2006

PROGRAM Design a 100,000 sq.ft. structure containing a library, gallery, cafe, cinema, & retail space on Rene-Levesque between Bluerry & Anderson in downtown Montreal, Quebec.

SOLUTION The buildings skin and structure both act to visually separate the secure and non-secure functions within. The structure for the

library above is used to separate the ground floor components from the public plaza. Unique spaces such as the lobby, cinema, cafĂŠ and gallery are all contained in glass boxes that wrap the columns and protrude out of the urban fabric. While the library sit on top of the elements in a mostly solid mass but leaves direct visual cues that connect the inhabitant back to the site.

PERSONAL :: NONARCHITECTURAL

Photography is not merely a method of showing others where you have been. It’s something personal; it is an attempt to capture the essence of a place. The end result being an inspirational piece of art, which you can refer back to at a different time and place to assist in recreating the emotions you have attached to that particular place.

food & architecture PERSONAL :: NONARCHITECTURAL

Food and cooking has always been a passion of mine. In a field where production is such a major portion of our time, cooking has become a forced creative outlet for me. It’s an activity I can fully immerse myself into by designing a meal, assembling and constructing the ingredients, and finally enjoying the product in a few hours time. Here in the kitchen I can completely clear my head of the day’s stress and only then I am I able to rejuvenate my personal creative energy.

concrete & lace PERSONAL :: NONARCHITECTURAL SUMMER 2010

Concrete & Lace is a series of paintings and sculptures created with spray paint, cast-concrete, and lace. Both concrete and spray paint are typically harsh and masculine materials and are rarely ever shown in another light. The introduction of lace removes the abruptness of the materials and creates a feminine form, transforming the two mediums into something entirely new. The series was displayed in the Blau Gallery in Kansas City, MO in August & September of 2010.

sliding wall garage PERSONAL :: ARCHITECTURAL WINTER :: 2010 HONORABLE MENTION

PROGRAM DWELL Magazine’s ‘Parkitecture’ Competition. Design an innovative freestanding building that can hold no more than three vehicles.

SOLUTION By sliding the wall open one creates an uninterrupted connection to the exterior, allowing ample day lighting and ventilation

into the space. When the wall is closed the garage blends into its surroundings with the use of natural materials and roof top vegetation. This green roof, which can be accessed by a ladder built into the reclaimed hardwood skin, will replace a portion of the green space lost from the footprint of the garage. The roof is also home to a large skylight which allows sufficient light into the interior for times when having the wall open is not feasible. Aside from the wall, the main defining feature of the building is its structural system which consists of re-purposed railroad ties. These are showcased on both the interior and exterior.

center city cycle PARTNERS :: Jeffery Kaye & David Wagner

PERSONAL :: ARCHITECTURAL SPRING :: 2010

PROGRAM Delware Valley Green Building Council’s 6th annual sustainable design competition entry to design a sustainable bicycle transit center in downtown Philadelphia, PA.

SOLUTION Center City Cycle is designed to address our societies’ need to change how we maneuver through our urban environments. Today

in the United States the car is the overwhelming choice for transportation, but due to rising fuel costs and emissions concerns our culture is looking towards the bicycle as an alternative means of transportation. Using the ubiquitous parking garage as a precedent for vehicle storage, Center City Cycle adapts its program for a bipedal mode of transportation. This garage keeps the ever present ramp system for circulation but replaces parking spots with bike racks and locks.

vertical adaptation PARTNERS :: Jeffery Kaye

PROGRAM

PERSONAL :: ARCHITECTURAL WINTER :: 2010

Evolo Arhcitecutre Magazine 2011 Skyscraper Competition Entry.

SOLUTION

Vertical adaptation is a study of how an urban tower can change to meet the demands of the space where its inhabitants live & work. The design of this tower allows for the continual customization of both the interior and the exterior of the tower as its inhabitants see fit. The dominante feature of the tower is a faรงade which showcases an exposed structural system allowing tenants to expand their units outward to which specially designed components, such as balconies, extra rooms, and/or solar panels hang.
