EVOLO Architecture 2011 Skyscraper Competition Entry. Project was published in the 2011 “EVOLO Skycraper” book.

SOLUTION

Vertical adaptation is a study of how an urban tower can change to meet the demands of the space where its inhabitants live & work. The design of this tower allows for the continual customization of both the interior and the exterior of the tower as its inhabitants see fit. The dominant feature of the tower is a façade which showcases an exposed structural system allowing tenants to expand their units outward to which specially designed components, such as balconies, extra rooms, and/or solar panels hang.

Design a 100,000 sq.ft. structure containing a library, gallery, cafe, cinema, & retail space on Rene-Levesque between Bluerry & Anderson in downtown Montreal, Quebec.

SOLUTION

The buildings skin and structure both act to visually separate the secure and non-secure functions within. The structure for the library above is used to separate the ground floor components from the public plaza. Unique spaces such as the lobby, cinema, cafĂŠ and gallery are all contained in glass boxes that wrap the columns and protrude out of the urban fabric. While the library sit on top of the elements in a mostly solid mass but leaves direct visual cues that connect the inhabitant back to the site.

Slaggie Architects is a small architectural firm based out of Kansas City, MO, with a focus primarily in the retail market. Despite this focus on retail, the firm has been able to adapt its self to a changing market over the last three years, willing to take on a breadth of projects ranging from medical, site planning, and government work.

Being such a small firm, while here I was able to participate in a multitude of different tasks which encompass the field of architecture, including designer, detailer, renderer, graphic designer, photographer, and construction administrator.

CMBA Architects is a mid-size architectural firm based in Sioux City, IA. During a summer internship I collaborated with fellow architects and interior designers in the renovation of a 1909 five-story brick warehouse. The building was converted into a mixed-use space containing both commercial and residential properties. Most importantly, the building became CMBA’s new headquarters. Throughout this process I was involved in code research, schematic design, and detailing.

PERSONAL_ARCHITECTURAL WINTER 2010 HONORABLE MENTION

DWELL Magazine’s ‘Parkitecture’ Competition. Design an innovative freestanding building that can hold no more than three vehicles.

SOLUTION

By sliding the wall open one creates an uninterrupted connection to the exterior, allowing ample day lighting and ventilation into the space. When the wall is closed the garage blends into its surroundings with the use of natural materials and roof top vegetation. This green roof, which can be accessed by a ladder built into the reclaimed hardwood skin, will replace a portion of the green space lost from the footprint of the garage. The roof is also home to a large skylight which allows sufficient light into the interior for times when having the wall open is not feasible. Aside from the wall, the main defining feature of the building is its structural system which consists of re-purposed railroad ties. These are showcased on both the interior and exterior.

PERSONAL_NON ARCHITECTURAL SUMMER 2010

Concrete & Lace is a series of paintings and sculptures created with spray paint, cast-concrete, and lace. Both concrete and spray paint are typically harsh and masculine materials and are rarely ever shown in another light. The introduction of lace removes the abruptness of the materials and creates a feminine form, transforming the two mediums into something entirely new. The series was displayed in the Blau Gallery in Kansas City, MO in August & September of 2010.

Delware Valley Green Building Council’s 6th annual sustainable design competition entry to design a sustainable bicycle transit center in downtown Philadelphia, PA.

SOLUTION

Center City Cycle is designed to address our societies’ need to change how we maneuver through our urban environments. Today in the United States the car is the overwhelming choice for transportation, but due to rising fuel costs and emissions concerns our culture is looking towards the bicycle as an alternative means of transportation. Using the ubiquitous parking garage as a precedent for vehicle storage, Center City Cycle adapts its program for a bipedal mode of transportation. This garage keeps the ever present ramp system for circulation but replaces parking spots with bike racks and locks.

Design a neighborhood center in Madrid based on the principles of thermodynamics.

SOLUTION

The climate of Madrid determined the form of the building to either capture or repel wind and sun. While the materials used through the building assist in the energy captured from the sun and the passing of energy from warm to cold spaces.
