By GINNI BROWN THE Bob Weir Grandstand at Cale Oval was officially opened on Saturday by Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders.

The opening, which was the precursor to the International Legends of League match, was a wonderful tribute to a local Rugby League stalwart and upstanding community member.

Narromine Shire Council’s Mayor, Craig Davies, welcomed the large crowd who attended in the pouring rain.

“The late Mr Bob Weir played rugby league for 20 years and is considered one of Narro-mine’s greatest local sportsmen. He donned both NSW and country league jerseys, played in international clashes and won three premierships as the coach of Narromine Jets Rugby League Club,” Cr Davies said.

Bob’s granddaughter, Fallon Attwood, addressed the crowd on behalf of his widow Judy and the rest of the family. She thanked all the parties involved in getting the funding for Cale Oval.

“Bobby would have loved to have been here to be part of this wonderful event and see his beloved Jets play,” she said.

Narromine Jets president Mick Burns added his thanks to all who attended. “The one thing we couldn’t control was the weather!” he remarked, as the officially party stood huddled under umbrellas.

Script changes could lead to shortages, overdosing, local pharmacist says CHANGES loosening rules over how medicines are dispensed by chemist shops, may lead to a medication shortage in the shire, a Narromine pharmacist believes.

Millions of Australians will now be able to buy two-months’ worth of medicine for the price of a single prescription, after Federal Health Minister, Mark Butler, last Wednesday announced the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme reforms as part of next month’s budget.

Narromine Pharmacy owner, Felicity Roberts, however, has told the Narromine Star she was concerned the laws would mean the district may soon run-out of medications, for which there are already current shortages.

The Federal Government reforms, will mean that about six million Australians will be eligible to take advantage of the changes taking effect from September which will apply to 320 common medicines, including for chronic conditions such as high cholesterol and heart disease.

Mr. Butler sprouted that the move will save patients more than $1.6 billion over the next four years alone.

Under the changes – recommended by the Independent Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee and supported by the Australian Medical Association – general patients can expect savings of up to $180 a year for each medicine with Concessions Card-holders up to $50 better-off.

Flipside to the initiative is, however, that local pharmacists will see a cut to their Government subsidies as they will have fewer patient visits. The Gov-

ernment hopes that this cut to pharmacy subsidies, which will also require fewer GP visits, will create Government substantial savings under the scheme.

But Ms Roberts believes, however, that the changes will also exacerbate the short supply of many medicines; a situation created by a “stock-up or miss-out” mind-set that developed during the pandemic.

“There’s a real shortage of medication since COVID, I think it’s a scarcity mentality, and they end-up with much more than they need,” she said.

“We are already having problems with medication – especially basic antibiotics,” she added.

She said that shortages of basic medications, is already a very real problem.

“I am having to tell patients all the time, we have a shortage of medication.

A lot of it is post-COVID. “There is just a shortage of ingredients. We are struggling with diabetes and blood pressure medications. It will be a huge strain on our ability to supply medication,” she said of the reform.

She said that, allowing people to line-up two months’ worth of supply of their prescribed drugs, could also lead to over self-medication.

“In the long-term, I see people hoarding their medications and, couple this with overdose toxicity, I think it will cause real problems,” she said.

“The Government needs to consider the cost of hospital admissions this will cause, and people taking more medication at a time than they need.

“It’s already a problem, that people are hoarding their medication in their homes,” she said.

According to the World Pharmacy Council, the new policy will cut $3.5 billion from the Federal Budget’s bottom-line.

The Minister, however, said that, cheaper access to vital medicines, was a win for the health system and for fi nancially-vulnerable clients.

“Every year, nearly a million Australians are forced to delay or go without a medicine that their doctor has told them is necessary for their health,” Mr Butler said.

“This ‘cheaper medicines policy’ is safe, good for Australians’ hip pockets and, most importantly, good for their health.”

He added that, recent loosening of the rules over chemists dispensing of non-prescription medicines, showed the Government’s support for the industry.

“Australian pharmacies already do much more than just dispense medicine, and the Government is supporting our trusted pharmacists to play an even bigger role in the health-care of Australians,” he said.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) also supported the change and: “warmly welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to put patients fi rst, and make medicines cheaper and easier to access.”

RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins, said that the announcement was: “a momentous day” and “a win for patients,” she said, adding: “beware of scare campaigns”.

“Despite what you hear from the Pharmacy Guild, there is no evidence of a shortage of the medications that are included in today’s announcement,” Dr Higgins concluded.

Get women involved in family finances: expert THE visiting co-founder of a superannuation fund, wants women to talk more and act more, when it comes to the family’s fi nances.

“Money can be quite a taboo subject,” Zoe Lamont from Verve Super, who is hosting the free Rewiring Women’s Wealth & Wellness Workshop in Narromine, said.

The interactive workshop – hosted by the Rabobank Client Council for Central and Northern NSW – is designed to give regionally-based women skills and tools to improve “‘fi nancial wellness”.

In Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services Global Financial Literacy Survey of 140 economies, Australia ranked in the top 10 countries for fi nancial literacy.

However, it also showed large and significant gender gaps, with women, on average, less fi nancially literate than men in the country.

M. Lamont told the Narromine Star, that women generally don’t talk about money at the pub or barbecues, but these conversations would be valuable.

“One thing I encourage women to do, is to start investing,” Ms Lamont said.

“Research shows women are generally very good investors... but I think a lot of them are scared by it, because they don’t realise how easy it is once you learn some basic principles around diversification and risk mitigation.

CHILDREN and young people in the Narromine Local Government Area (LGA) have received significant funding for youth.

Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders this week announced that Narromine Community Skills Project has received $50,000 for it’s “We Are All in This Together” project, and $49,916 for “Youth Do Us Proud” from the Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative.

The programs are said to “build community connections and have their voices heard” and come from grants co-funded by the previous state Coalition government.

“Through We Are All in This Together, young people will work with Bathurst organisation, Desert Pea Media, to create a music clip that tells the story of the current struggles and challenges in the local community due to drought, flood, COVID and more,” Mr Saunders said.

“While the Youth Do Us Proud project will deliver a holistic youth-focused program to the Narromine LGA, helping to build connections within the community between the younger generations by collaborating with many businesses and ser- Sharon Milnes vices throughout the programs.”

Narromine Community Skills Project manager Sharon Milnes said she is excited to have the opportunity to engage with local businesses and Desert Pea Media to work with local youth.

“The youth of Narromine and Trangie has seen a gap for so long when it comes to services, so we’re hoping to be able to offer activities targeted just for them that will build some links in the community,” Ms Milnes said.

“And we can’t wait to see the opportunities that the kids will be given – we can only imagine the pride that these projects will bring to all involved as they creatively tell our local story to the world through song, dance and more.”

Council hits out at State over Emergency Services Levy hike

NARROMINE Shire Council has directed some stirring criticism at the State Government for what it has said is a “significant and unplanned budget shortfall after being levied with the unexpected charges for the 2023/2024 Emergency Services Levy (ESL)”.

The ESL, also referred to as Fire Services Levy (FSL), contributes to funding for fi re and emergency services in NSW. These services include Fire and Rescue (FRNSW), Rural Fire Services (RFS), and State Emergency Services (SES).

“Council has only been notified of the sizable increase of this levy after the 2023/2024 budget has been set for the subsequent 12 months, with no consultation or communication to anyone in the local government sector,” Narromine Shire Council mayor Craig Davies said.

The Council contrasted this Government’s approach with the previous Coalition state government, which it says “supported Councils and their communities by subsidising the past increases of the ESL”.

The ESL is a cost imposed on councils and the insurance industry to fund the emergency services budget in NSW. The

“Unfortunately, the newly

appointed State Government has failed to consult with us about this shock to Council’s budget. Narromine Shire Council has an increase of $196,000 to its ESL contribu-

tion for the 2023/2024 year.

Again, the State Government has devolved a function to local Government without consideration of fair remuneration or consultation,” Cr

Davies said.

However, a spokesperson from the Minister for Emergency Services, Jihab Dib, said “legislative requirements” determine contributions made by local councils to emergency services and denied making any changes to them.

“The former government and the Government approved this increase and did not have the time to engage with the process without jeopardising the funding arrangements for emergency services.”

He said that “ideally, local governments will have been budgeting for the full emergency services levy, including any increases, since 201920 (as the top-up was never guaranteed)”.

He added that the Government was implementing a review of fi nancial modelling for councils “with a lens on the increasing cost burdens on residents, and we remain committed to that promise”.

Narromine Shire Council said it intends to follow up its concerns further with the NSW Minister for Local Government and NSW Premier and “encourage for a fairer, more transparent and equitable funding formula to the Emergency Services Levy”.

Mortgage holder poverty on the rise in Shire 9.2 per cent of mortgage holders in Narromine considered to be experiencing poverty in 2021

By LUKE WILLIAMS THE number of Narromine Shire mortgage holders living in poverty has increased in the last five years.

A new report by the NSW Council of Social Services (NCOSS) shows Narromine also saw a massive jump in the percentage of mortgage holders in poverty, with 9.2 per cent experiencing poverty in 2021, a jump of 7.4 percentage points from 2016.

Across the state there was an 80 per cent increase in the number of people with mortgages living in poverty.

NCOSS CEO Joanna Quilty said the report is a wakeup call for the state’s leaders, urging the NSW Government to respond quickly.

She said that there had “absolutely” been in spike in people paying off a mortgage living in poverty across regional NSW. “These statistics are

devastating, showing the grim reality of poverty reaching into every suburb and town in NSW – but with some communities really bearing the brunt,” Ms Quilty said.

“Whether it’s people renting in Sydney, paying off a mortgage in re-

gional areas, living in public housing, having to move back in with family, or resorting to some other temporary arrangement to get by,” she said different people from different backgrounds were being impacted.

“We know that the situation has only gotten worse since 2021, with relentless rate hikes and soaring cost of living pressures.”

The research found housing shortages were a main key of poverty in regional areas, with a growing number of renters and home-owners on mortgages struggling to make ends meet.

Researchers used Australian Bureau of Statistic data and defi ned poverty as a household’s

disposable income after paying tax falling below a level considered adequate to achieve an acceptable standard of living.

“This research marks a sobering milestone,” Ms Quilty said. “Almost 1 million people in NSW are now living in poverty. This is a policy choice, and we must do better.”

The research, however, did fi nd there has been an overall drop in the number of people living in poverty in Narromine.

New construction readies as museum calls for volunteers NARROMINE Aviation Museum is preparing for its new memorial wall to be built this month, but the organisation says a lack of volunteers is holding it back.

Construction on the museum’s long-anticipated World War II memorial wall is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

Museum Chairman Peter Kierath – the nephew of Flight Lieutenant Reginald ‘Rusty’ Kierath, who the Germans took prisoner after an aerial battle over the Tunisian coast – told the Narromine Star he was excited to see the project fi nally take shape.

“We made three applications to the Federal Government over four years for this wall, and all of them got rejected,” Mr Kierath said.

The former state government would be the one to provide a $136,941 grant to ensure the aerodrome got its wall.

The memorial wall will be constructed with old English-style red bricks and, when fi nished, will stand one metre high and have a 30-degree slope.

pilots who trained at No.5 Elementary Flying Training School at the Narromine Aerodrome. From May 1940 to May 1944, 2850 pilots went through the school – more than a fi fth of all pilots trained in Australia during that period.

Sadly, 16 men died during training, and about 780 pilots who trained at the facility

served in the war but never returned home.

Narromine’s air force history will soon be on full display, with the Narromine Aviation Museum securing a major update to build a World War II memorial wall.

Mr Kierath said the memorial wall showed the Aviation Museum’s potential and the kinds of things the Museum

could do – if only they had more volunteers.

“There are all sorts of other events and things we could do here if we had people to volunteer, but the problem is we don’t have any volunteers under 70.”

Mr Kierath said while they did not require volunteers for the memorial wall project, he had been advertising around town in the hope of expanding with more projects but had yet to have much success.

“It’s frustrating because we are trying to encourage more tourism to Narromine,” he said. “A lack of volunteers is a problem all around Narromine as it is Australia-wide.”

A Volunteering Australia study showed that in 2021, only one in five people (about 20 per cent) was actively volunteering in the community, a drastic reduction from 36 per cent in 2010 and 29 per cent in 2019.

“A lack of volunteers affects the quality of the town.

If there is not much going on and not many tourists, then the value of your house falls away. So there are all sorts of implications when people don’t volunteer.”

Reform bush doctor funding and retention, doctors urge

POORER health outcomes for country Australians are the result of outdated and inflexible funding models, our leading rural doctor advocacy group believes.

Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) believes that the GP shortage in rural and remote areas will not change unless the system is reformed, RDAA president Dr Megan Belot said.

“Bulk-billing rates are simply not enough to maintain a viable small business in a rural community, and to cover the significant overheads related to staffing, infrastructure, equipment and supplies," Dr Belot said.

“On top of this, for decades all types of rural health services have struggled to recruit and retain medical professionals and this has resulted in a maldistribution of the medical workforce across the country.”

She said that the droughts, bushfi res and floods of recent years have disproportionately affected rural communities which has exacerbated these issues.

“The threat to the viability and sustainability of rural and remote primary health services is clear and present,” Dr Belot added.

Building Australia’s biggest dorm room Boarding Schools Expo in Dubbo this weekend to showcase up to 40 schools under one roof

THE Boarding Schools Expo, now in its 19th year, has come a long way from welcoming 18 boarding schools to Dubbo in 2005.

Local residents may not be aware that the business, which convenes in-person events in regional NSW and Queensland; works with over 165 boarding schools from across Australia; and hosts the Australian Boarding School Summit (an online event in conjunction with their virtual expo event) was the brainchild of Narromine resident Meg Bennett; and is now headed up

by Trangie’s Amanda Ferrari.

The Boarding Schools Expo – which is free – is all about connecting families with options for their children’s education.

By bringing close to 40 boarding schools from across NSW, ACT, Victoria and Queensland to the in-person Expo locations in Dubbo, Narrabri, Wagga (Wagga has 43 boarding schools attending) and Griffith it makes it exponentially easier for rural families to make contact with the schools.

“The Expos put all the schools under one roof, and everyone is welcome” explained Mrs Ferrari. “In

Wind farm winners and losers from new development: Mayor

THE recent community information session on a proposed wind farm at Narromine revealed a mixed response from those neighbouring the likely site, Mayor Craig Davies said.

ACCIONA Energia hosted the information session for its proposed Wallaby Creek Wind that will consist of up to 44 wind turbine generators and associated infrastructure across approximately 8000 hectares of pastoral and cropping land 10km south of Narromine.

The Wallaby Creek Wind Farm with a generating capacity of up to 250 MW is proposed to connect to Essential Energy’s 132kV Narromine South Switching Station, located approximately 10km north of the project.

“There is no scoping report at the moment, which would give us a scope of what is being built,” Cr Davies said of the proposal.

“But for those who have a wind turbine placed on their property, will get an income for that. For the foreseeable future, they will be looking at a significant windfall,” he said.

“For those who have a wind turbine next to their property, they get all of the disadvantages, and none of the benefits,” he added.

However, the Narromine Star

has spoken to two locals whose properties will neighbour the project, and they said they were only initially concerned about it, because they didn’t realise their properties fell within the development zone.

Both of them said, however, that they feel more confident since a recent information session by ACCIONA Energia was held in the area.

An ACCIONA Energía spokesperson, said the information session: “was a chance for us to meet with the community and share preliminary details about the project’s boundary and layout, but also to explain where we are in the process and how the community can be involved in shaping the project as we progress through planning.

“The project is still in its early stages, but it’s important to us that we can meet and brief members of the community and collect views and opinions,” they added.

The spokesperson says the project is progressing, and, while a scoping report has yet to be submitted to the Department of Planning and Environment, it was shown to members of the public during a meeting in April.

ACCIONA said they would be consulting with stakehold-

ers and completing noise and visual assessment modelling to help refine the layout toward what a fi nal layout could look like.

They added that, at the end of January 2023, they had installed a wind-monitoring mast at the proposed site.

“ACCIONA Energía is a community-fi rst developer and prides itself on open engagement and strong relationships with the community,” the spokesperson said.

“Some feedback we received at the session last week was around the accessibility of information sessions and staying in touch.”

The spokesperson confi rmed that the information sessions was only the start of a long-process for the project.

“In the future, we’ll host sessions in both Narromine and Tomingley so that all community members are able to attend, and we would like to hear from any community members who would like to stay updated about the project so we have the best contact details to reach people on.

“We value all feedback and encourage all residents in the area to sign-up to our mailing lists so we can keep everyone up to date,” the spokesperson concluded.

Nats push Govt to restore road funds for Inland Rail project IT’S no good constructing a great “nation-building” project, unless you provide the infrastructure to sustain it, the National Party believes. The Federal Government must restore more than $200 million cut from supporting road infrastructure that had been tagged for the Inland Rail project.

Senate estimates had found nearly $207 million that had been taken out of the project by the Government, a spokesperson for Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Senator Bridget McKenzie, said.

The spokesperson said that Federal Labor’s October Budget included $206.8 million in cuts during this term of Government for road funding projects supporting delivery of the Inland Rail.

The funds chopped were for grade separations to make road and rail connections safer, as well as $14.6 million cut from road upgrades to connections to the Newell, Oxley and Castlereagh highways at Gilgandra, they said.

“Labor must restore western NSW road funding it cut from the October Budget, which was intended to support transport connections and road safety along the Inland Rail route,” the spokesperson added.

The Federal Labor Government disagrees with the Nationals’ claim . A spokeswoman for the Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King, told the Narromine Star, “The Australian Government did not cut road funding linked to Inland Rail in the October 2022-23 Budget.

“The Australian Government will continue to work closely with the NSW Government to identify, plan and deliver priority road and rail infrastructure across the state,” the Minister’s spokesperson said.

Sen McKenzie said that the importance of Inland Rail was underlined in a recent independent report by former businesswoman and infrastructure expert, Dr Kerry Schott.

The report found that the project created by the former Federal Coalition Government is already running significantly over-budget and signif-

icantly behind schedule, with just over 16 per cent of the 1700km of the line completed so far.

The initial $16 billion cost of the project, Dr Schott added, has since blown out to $31 billion, though she doesn’t, in her fi ndings, suggest the project be abandoned, Sen McKenzie added.

“Dr Schott’s report strongly supports the delivery of the Inland Rail, and has provided the Albanese Government with a blueprint on how to proceed with the project,” Sen McKenzie said.

“The Prime Minister must now see the importance of this critically-needed road safety funding to support the nation-building Inland Rail project and reinstate the $218 million in cut and delayed funding,” she argued.

Dr Schott (who has since been appointed acting chair of ARTC) said the board managing the project did “not have adequate skills” and for two years there had not been a “substantive” chief executive.

She said advice given to the former Coalition Government to improve the skills mix on

the board was “not heeded”.

While the project may be running behind schedule, Senator McKenzie said that it had already proved its worth.

“Two stages of the Inland Rail have been completed, ensuring last summer’s harvest was able to reach ports, despite widespread flooding.”

She attributed this success to the support the project had received from the former State Coalition Government.

“This compares with stalled progress in both Queensland and Victoria, where the Labor State Governments stymied progress on this critically-important project, which is expected to take 200,000 trucks off our roads and remove 750,000 tonnes of CO2 per year,” Sen McKenzie said.

“Completing the Inland Rail is essential to lowering the emissions of the transport sector. This new infrastructure is impressive to see fi rst-hand, in-person, and is already making a positive impact,” she added.

Mr Coulton added that, once completed, the Inland Rail will transform freight movements between the nation’s capitals, cutting 200 kilometres off the distance between Brisbane and Melbourne, and 500 kilometres from Brisbane to Adelaide and Perth.

“The Inland Rail has been a huge boon for regional NSW, but concerns are now growing that projects are stalling under the Labor Government,” he said.

“Businesses in my electorate have geared up for ongoing work to deliver the Inland Rail; investments that have now been rendered uncertain by the Government,” he added.

Mr Coulton said that more than $290 million has been invested in local businesses with 1860 people employed on each of the Parkes-to-Narromine and Narrabri-to-North Star stretches of track.

This includes more than 300 and 160 Indigenous people employed on each respective leg, he concluded.

Any delays or slowing of this project negatively impacts the ability of councils, locals and landholders to make plans about their futures, causing renewed anxiety. During the senator’s visit we were able to discuss this with councils in Gilgandra, Narromine and Moree, as well as other relevant issues for these communities.

Together we are calling on minister Catherine King and treasurer Jim Chalmers to restore more than $200 million in road funding for Inland Rail projects in the May

budget, and to give confidence to the future of this project.

Minister vows to fix Walgett’s Bangladesh-quality water issues WITH its quality and security recently compared to that of a Third World country, the State Government has vowed to fi x Walgett's water crisis with immediate action ordered.

State Minister for Water, Rose Jackson, visited the north-west community last Friday to meet with the local community and get a better understanding of the challenges facing the town.

Improved treatment for the town's water supply is to start this week, she added.

“I promised Walgett residents that I would put their concerns about water quality front and centre, and that’s what I am doing,” Ms Jackson said.

“The local community has said, loudly and clearly, over a long period of time, that water quality and security is on top of their priority list, and I want them to know I am listening carefully and take everyone’s views seriously," she added.

She said that while the long-running issues with the poor quality of tap water in the community offer no easy solutions, more can be done.

THE much-heralded Commonwealth Government loosening of pharmacy script rules is all bad news for country chemists and their customers, Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee believes.

Changes to medicine prescriptions announced last week will only exacerbate drug shortages, force pharmacy owners to cut services or lay-off staff or close their doors entirely, and may even endanger the lives of vulnerable patients, he added.

The changes will allow individuals to purchase GP-prescribed drugs on a two-monthly basis, rather than monthly as under current rules, thereby reducing costs to consumers and the script fees for chemists.

“The Federal Government needs to rethink its new 60-day prescription policy,” Mr Gee said.

“My phone has been ringing off-thehook with local pharmacists who are extremely concerned about what this change will mean for their patients," he

He said it is likely to lead to vulnerable patients now having access to double their usual supply of prescribed drugs with potential tragic outcomes, and could also lead to a drug-drought.

"With people across Australia soon able to go to their pharmacy and receive double their usual prescription, immense pressure will be placed on already-stretched supply chains," he added.

He said that, put simply, there won’t be enough key drugs which many people rely on every day available, including those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.

“People are going to miss out on health-sustaining drugs.

“We saw during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic just how devastating it can be when a local pharmacy doesn’t have stock of a much-needed medicine,"

Mr Gee said.

He said that pharmacists are concerned that, while the new policy looks and sounds positive, it will expose vulnerable patients to harm, put more pressure on our hardworking pharmacists, increase drug shortages, and force people to go without their regular medications.

“When you strip it all back, this policy change is the government basically taking money from pharmacists to make some marginal budget savings.

"The government is cutting the number of prescription fees it pays to local pharmacies," which is something, he added, that will hit country chemists the hardest.

“The problem for country pharmacies is that only a relatively small amount of their revenue comes from the retail side, as their businesses heavily rely on fi lling prescriptions.

“As a result, this change will have a devastating impact on the services that our local pharmacists provide," he concluded.

World’s longest rhino gestation with calf born at region’s Zoo WITH a face that only a mother could love, and after more than a year in the making, the recent birth of a critically-endangered Black Rhino at Taronga Western Plains Zoo was still the cause of great celebration.

The boy calf was born in mid-April to mother, Kufara, using a world-fi rst reproductive treatment for the species which has a record gestation period of more than 16 months, Taronga’s Black Rhino supervisor Jennifer Conaghan said.

“This special birth is the result of an international research partnership in Black Rhino conservation, and represents the fi fth calf born into the conservation breeding program for the species in the last eight years,” Jennifer explained.

“Zookeepers were given a rare treat when they actually witnessed the birth. Historically Southern Black Rhinos here at the Zoo have been born overnight after a 14–16-month gestation. This little calf was born feet fi rst at 11.15am in a behind-the-scenes birthing yard,” she added.

This is 13-year-old Kufara’s second calf, with her fi rst “Mesi” born six years ago in April 2017.

With less than 7000 Black Rhinos remaining in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching that supplies the illegal rhino horn trade, the birth of this Southern Black Rhino is an important one.

It also shines new light on the maximum gestation length the species can experience, with Kufara’s calf born 490 days after mating, which exceeds that of the longest reported length for Black Rhinos

“We knew exactly when Kufara’s mating occurred, so we were keeping a very close eye on her throughout and as she approached the end of her gestation,” said Rhino keeper Jake Williams.

“We ran some tests to make sure both mum and calf were doing well, and the very next

day, Kufara gave birth to a healthy boy,” he added.

Black Rhinos in the wild typically have a calf every twoand-a-half to four years, however, after Kufara’s fi rst calf became more independent, she had trouble conceiving.

Taronga’s conservation scientists, veterinarians and keepers then became involved

Gimme shelter: Better bus stops to encourage public transport use IMPROVING and encouraging the use of public transport across the region is the aim of a bus shelter rebuilding project that’s providing hundreds of thousands of dollars to Councils in the Central West.

Nearly $200,000 has been announced for Dubbo, Narromine and Warrumbungle Councils, to fund safer and more accessible bus stops and thereby facilitate the use of public transport in country NSW. The work will see the shelters upgraded or built from scratch to meet current Disability Discrimination Act 1992 standards. This will include making them more useable through improved awareness of bus stop locations, kerbside information and improved security such as tactile ground indicators and lighting, and the development of minor infrastructure to complement passenger service development.

A total of 14 new shelters are being built, nine in Dubbo, and five in Warrumbungle, with upgrades to 13 more, three in Dubbo, seven in Narromine, and three in Warrumbungle, to a total of $188,000.

Narromine Garden Club visits “Moriah”

Contributed by ANNE HARMER NARROMINE Garden Club held their monthly meeting on April 28 in the beautifully planned garden of Tim and Pru Barclay at “Moriah”.

This is a wonderful roaming garden with many rooms to wonder into.

A splendid display of roses and many varieties of ground cover were enjoyed by our club.

From interactive workshops with guest authors, to cosmic crafts, space missions and astronomical adventures, as the theme suggested, it was “out of this world”!

Buddies at St Augustine's School Our year six buddies would like to introduce to you their kindergarten buddies!

MY buddy is Isaac. When he grows up, he wants to be a policeman. Isaac likes playing in the playground, on the monkey bars. He is good at climbing trees and playing sports such as soccer and footy. The most important rule at school that Isaac knows is to not climb trees. Isaac thinks that his dad is going to Orange to get a bobcat, and his mum is lying at home doing nothing while he’s at school.

MY buddy is Kasey. Kasey loves playing basketball. He also likes to play soccer, football and lots of sports. When he grows up, he wants to be a builder and build houses. Memorial golf day raises $16,000 for mental health, in memory of Graham A WONDERFUL turn-out of about 100 people have supported a special golf day in Narromine, to commemorate the loss of well-loved local, Graham Walsh.

The event was organised

by Graham’s former Essential Energy colleagues, who raised $16,000 for mental health charities from the day.

Graham died in August 2019, aged only 53 years, after tragically taking his own life.

One of the organisers, his nephew and former workmate, Brad Wallace, told the Narromine Star, that the money will be donated to several groups working in this field, including the “Black Dog” and “Beyond Blue” organisations.

“Mental illness is not a subject we talk about enough,” Brad said.

So, this day was the opportunity to come together to

talk about these things,” he added.

He said that the organisers were touched, by the widerange of individuals and groups, who got involved for the occasion.

“It’s not just the people of Narromine who attended.

“It’s also the businesses and organisations in Narromine and Dubbo around town, who helped by donating goods and services for the day. It just couldn’t be done without them,” he said.

Graham’s son, Lucas Walsh, added that the day had been well-supported, not just by people in Narromine, but by his father’s former friends from all over western NSW. “It was wonderful to see so many people come-out to show their support for Dad and people struggling with mental illness,” Lucas said.

Currently, suicide rates in

remote areas of Australia are roughly twice that for cities, while those in outer-regional areas, are a full 50 per cent higher than for metropolitan areas. According to the Black Dog Institute, tell-tale signs that someone might be feeling suicidal, include talking about feeling hopeless or helpless, becoming socially-isolated, job loss, relationship loss, or the suicide of a friend or family member.

Beyond Blue, adds that there are some things you can do, if you think someone might be feeling suicidal, including: f Let them know you are concerned. f Ask if they are thinking about suicide. f Encourage them to get professional help.

“In the future, at these events, I would like to do something, maybe have some kind of representative

from one of these organisations on-site as someone people can approach to discuss these things,” Lucas said.

“But the important thing to remember, is that help is available 24/7,” he added.

Removing the stigma about mental health issues, is central to dealing with the problem, he said.

“Nobody is going to think less of you for asking for help.

“It can be as anonymous and discrete as you would like it to be. Also, if suicide does happen, there is support for loved ones after the fact if you need support,” he said.

Lucas said that his father, had gone from being outgoing and gregarious, to obvious mental distress.

“He was a lively, active, fit, happy, sort of guy...a hard-worker who loved his sport and his footy, he loved his fi shing and his camping,” he said.

“We could all see that he was struggling, but we didn’t know that he was struggling that much,” he said of his Dad. Brad agreed, saying that, for those in distress, help is always at hand, describing Graham as: “an absolute legend of a guy, and gone too soon.

“We need to talk more,” he said.

“I know it’s hard for us blokes to open-up and talk to each other.

The day showed, we are really there for each other and care,” Brad concluded.

Preliminary games in Christie and Hood Castlereagh League IN what equates to a somewhat staggered start to the 2023 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League season, a number of competition games were played in both the youth league and league tag competitions over the weekend, the majority of those being in Gilgandra on Sun-day when six league tag games were contested.

Cobar, Dunedoo and Narromine did enough at Gilgandra to suggest that they will be in the mix when it comes to semi fi nal time, all three handing in strong performances, although Coonamble certainly gave the Dunedoo Swannettes a run for their money before going down in what was one of the tighter games witnessed on the day.

Attention now turns to round one of the competition with some appetizing fi rst grade games on offer.

After spending 2022 in limbo, the Coonabarabran Unicorns fi nd themselves back on the paddock and at home to the Baradine Magpies in a local derby that should attract a huge crowd between these two archrivals.

If past epic contests between the two near neighbours is anything to go by, this will be no place for the faint-hearted and a fierce battle is anticipated.

A little further south another local derby will be taking place when the Binnaway Bomb-shells will play host to the Dunedoo Swans in a match that will be a real test for both outfits, this being especially so for the home side who are making a comeback to fi rst grade after several seasons.

That fact alone should ensure that “The Crater” is extremely well populated with spectators who will be eager to get some sort of gauge on their

respective team’s prospects for the 2023 season.

In other games the Gulgong Bull Terriers will be keen to start their centenary year with a bold showing against the Narromine Jets, whilst the visitors will be out to build on what was a very productive fi rst year in the Castlereagh League competition in 2022, and a tight match could well be on the cards.

Meanwhile the Coonamble Bears will be out to impress their home crowd when they enter-tain the 2022 premiers, the Cobar Roosters at Bear Park.

Nyngan, ANZAC Day LOCAL couple Ken and Kerry Wright have won the 1400 metres RSL Club Nyngan Cup for the second year in succession with their smart sprinter Rylan’s Pick.

Winning trainer Brett Robb, who has a big team in work at Dubbo, is formerly from Nyngan while Clayton Gallagher now a leading jockey based at Dubbo served most of his apprenticeship with Rodney Robb at Nyngan.

Last year, Rylan’s Pick defeated Rogue Runner and Allez Rev in the cup, and before a big crowd on ANZAC Day in 2023, Rylan’s Pick (Clayton Gallagher, $2.30 favourite) took the lead 600 metres from home and cleared out to win by over five lengths from All Words (Wendy Peel, $4.40) and Gossip (Ken Dunbar, $10).

The fi rst leg of a winning double for Gilgandra trainer Bryan Dixon Jnr was Love Rat (Clayton Gallagher, ($6 to $3.80) which was prominent from the outset when beating Orreza (James Rogers, $2.80 favourite) and Sing And Dance (Jayden Barrie, $9) in the 900 metres Max Smith Memorial Maiden Plate.

The Dixon-trained Quick Spin (Andrew Banks, $5.50) then came from sixth to win the 1200 metres Inland Petroleum Benchmark 45 Handicap from the leader Pipe Dreams (James Rogers, $15) and Pahang (Ken Dunbar, $4 equal fav.).

Last start Lightning Ridge winner Benyatta (Ken Dunbar, $3.50 fav.) came down the outside at Nyngan to overhaul the Wayne Prisk, Cobar trained (Paul Zerafa, $3.80) with Overdefence (Kath Bell-Pitomac, $3.50) fi nishing third in the

Connie Greg and Ken Dunbar combined again to win the 1100 metres Nyngan Bowling Club and Aeris Resources Tritton Class One Handicap with Blackhill Kitty ($9) which reeled in the leader Centre Circle (Dakota Lee-Gillett, $5.50) while Missiles Armed (Clayton Gallagher, $4 to $2 fav.) came from a long way back for third.

Running on well from back in the field, the Karen Lunn, Dubbo trained Glenfield Fox (Andrew Banks, $4) won the fi nal event, the 1400 metres Ray Barrow Memorial Maiden Plate from Boddington (Clayton Gallagher, $3.50) and The Real Prince (Jayden Barrie, $5 to $3).

Binnaway COONABARABRAN trainer Graeme Brooker and Orange based jockey Chelsea Ings have combined for yet another feature race win with veteran galloper Plectrum, this time

on Saturday in the 1300 metres Exchange Hotel and Jack O’Brien Binnaway Cup. The now nine-year-old gelding Plectrum came to the central west in late 2019 after two wins on north coast tracks and has since won another six races for Graeme Brooker with Chelsea Ings being the winning rider on five occasions including the cups at Carinda, Walgett and Binnaway.

Plectrum took the early front running from Searchlight at Binnaway and that pair established a big lead over the rest of the seven-horse field.

Starting the $10 rank outsider, Plectrum maintained a good tempo to win by almost a length from Searchlight (Shayleigh Ingelse, $4.40) with another four lengths to third placed Order Of Merit (Andrew Banks, $5).

“Plectrum is at his best when allowed to roll along in front”, winning jockey Chelsea Ings explained.

James Rogers is now working full-time for Kieren Hazelton and he won on Orreza for

Narromine Bowling Club AFTER a brief but not planned stint in Canberra Hospital, I am back – not bright-eyed and bushytailed – but it will have to suffice for the next few weeks.

What’s been happening since our last column? Not much, according to the records – mainly social bowls and the odd outing to Trangie.

Social Bowls this week was limited to Thursday with the troops going to the aforemen-tioned Trangie last Sunday. On Thursday, Carl Moore, Lionel Ayoub and Steve Buttsworth were declared the day's winners after their good win over the Bill Wilkie-led trio, whilst Dwyane Faro, John Silk and Don Sullivan were the recipients of the runners-up cheque. Some 14 starters went around for the day in not too bad conditions.

At Trangie on Sunday morning, some 22 “Lads” enjoyed renewed friendship and a game of Bowls.

Narromine Bowling Club will be hosting a couple of visitations in May, including this Friday when the OFF-ROAD Caravan Club will be having a bowls evening and meal. Some 115 members under the guidance of Colin & Kay Ward will descend upon the Club around 5pm, and if any member can come on down and show these “rookies” the ropes with regards playing the game, it would be appreciated.

And fi nally, best of luck to Danny Carnevale, Dwayne Faro and Kane Adams who are com-peting in the 2023 Zone Singles Championships this weekend.

Breaking clear in the straight, Orreza won by nearly two lengths from Outback Pat (Hollie Hull, $8) and Sniper’s Byline (Shayleigh Ingelse, $3.50).

Billy Cray is like James Rogers formerly from England and he won the following race on Jarmanagic for Dubbo trainer Garry Lunn.

Jarmanagic ($2.50 favourite) took the lead from Japingka halfway down the straight and won by a length from Grenado (Chelsea Hillier, $3.50) and Adviser (Kelsey Lenton, $3).

Bringing up a double for Garry Lunn, Weave That Web (Shayleigh Ingelse, $1.90 fav.) raced to a big early lead and kept going strongly to win the 1700 metres Benchmark 45 Handicap by over five lengths from Subuki (Jayden Barrie, $2.50) and Torrid Affair (Chelsea Ings, $6).

Flying Foxy (Shayleigh Ingelse, $4) travelled well in the lead however was overhauled and beaten threequarters of

a length by Tandem (Ronald Simpson, $2 fav.) with Starlink ( Vad Bolozhinskyi, $4.40) coming from a long last for third in the 1200 metres Class Two Handicap.

Geoff O’Brien who trains Tandem at Quirindi was reared at Binnaway and recalls as a 12-year-old having his fi rst ride on a racehorse one morning on the Binnaway track for the late Colin Easey, a long time successful local trainer.

The 1300 metres Dennis Frater Memorial Maiden Handicap was taken out by the Luke Pepper, Sconetrained Mean Girls (Will Stanley, $3.80) which took the lead turning for home from Sensei Jacky then shot away to score by four lengths from Perseptina (Andrew Banks, $3.50) and Conversations (Chelsea Hillier, $3.80).

The Binnaway track handled the almost constant rain exceptionally well and although only hosting racing once a year, Binnaway is one of the better tracks in the central west.

GOLF CLUB NOTES

Rain upsets weekend golf

By NORM LEWIS LAST weekend some much needed rain fell which interfered with the weekend golf programme. The rain however was of great benefit to the course which is at the moment being prepared for forthcoming major events.

On Saturday last, there was no play in the scheduled events however the rain eased off ena-bling the Sunday programmed competition to be played. This event was an 18 hole 4 BBB competition which attracted a field of 15 players.

Winners on the day were Alex Williams and Duane Faro-Mann who recorded a score of 40 points. They won on a count back from Tony Harding and Steve Squires also on 40 points. Very good scores on the day.

The Nearest the Pin prizes went to Matt Brown on the 9th and Craig Duff on the 17th. Craig also won the Long Drive on the 1st.

Next the programmed events are Saturday 6th – a 4BBB event – and Sunday 7th – an 18 hole Individual Stableford.

Important events coming up are the Cobar Open Tournament on Sunday, May 7.

This will be followed by rounds 1 & 2 of the 4BBB Club Championships on May 13 and 14. This major event is supported by the Duff Family, for which the Club is extremely grateful.

Another important event to be hosted by the Club will be a meeting of Western District Clubs with the GOLF NSW Liaison Officer on Thursday, May 16. The meeting gets under way at 9am followed by lunch and 9 holes of golf. This meeting gives Clubs the opportunity to meet with this golf official who is engaged by GOLF NSW to help Clubs with Assistant appli-cations.

JUNIOR CLINIC. The Junior Clinic is back on again each Sunday morning at 9am. The Clinic has proved popular with our up and coming golfers.

VETERANS GOLF. The next Veterans 9 hole comp will be played in conjunction with the monthly medal event on Saturday, May 20. This comp will be played on the back nine.

The Nyngan Vets Open planned for May 6 has been transferred to Saturday, August 26.

Soccer season’s soggy start

$2.50 includes GST

IT was a soggy start to the season for the Narromine Soccer Club’s under eights Pirates, who kicked off their season in Dubbo with a great win 3- 1 over the Raptor Rangers.

While many sporting fi xtures across the region were cancelled due to the rain, the Pirates took to the field with confidence and huge smiles.

“Despite the conditions the kids just had so much fun!” coach Katie McCutcheon said.

“They were thrilled to be back on the field for another season”.

Narromine Soccer Club is fielding a massive 13 teams in the 2023 season and has 100 registered players across the under five to U11 age groups. Secretary Sara McGilchrist has been involved with the club for five years. “Soccer in Narromine continues to go from strength-tostrength,” she said.

“We really want to thank the local community for getting behind our club. We were thrilled to receive a grant for a shed upgrade this year, and also really want to thank all our sponsors and in particular Narromine Hardware for their generous support of our club”.
