Trangie’s temporary fuel station as “premier, new place” is built By LUKE WILLIAMS WORKS on a temporary fuel station at Trangie began this week – but it may not be enough to quell local’s anger at Transport NSW delays to the new development. Trangie has been without a petrol garage since December 4 last year, with residents forced to make a round-trip of about 70 kilometres to Narromine, just for fuel. It is expected, however, that the new station – to be operated by Inland Petroleum on the same block as the former Ampol site – will be open in about four weeks, if there is “good weather”, Inland Petroleum’s Principal, Paul McCallum, said. “This is a temporary service, to be operational for 12 months. We will have all the major fuels available,” he explained. “We are going to have a small shop, small kitchen, and bathroom facilities.” the Narromine-based executive, added. He said that after 12 months, a new permanent fuel station will be opened and operated by Inland Petroleum, also on the same site. “The permanent fuel station will have a cafe app where people can pre-order, and there will be a coffee window – things you don’t normally see west of Dubbo,” Mr McCallum explained.

“It will be a premier, new place.” The petrol station, however, cannot come soon-enough for much of the town, as criticism mounts over Transport for NSW delays to approvals for the temporary facility.

“It’s the biggest issue in the town since it looked like we would lose our doctor,” Paul Gartside, owner of Trangie Caravan Park, told the Narromine Star. “We were told by the Government, we would get a new

service station within 10 days of the old one closing,” he added. “It’s now mid-March, three months later, and we are still waiting. Many in the community feel let-down by the Government and its departments.”

Narromine Star has confi rmed with multiple sources, that the approval to re-use the land of the old Ampol site for a new fuel station – both as a temporary and a permanent station – rested with Transport for NSW bureaucrats. This process, however, has taken 18 months in total from when it was fi rst broached, despite promises of a temporary fuel station within 10 days after the dilapidated former Ampol outlet closed down. Narromine Shire Mayor, Councillor Craig Davies, recently told radio station 2GB in Sydney: “It’s just driven me absolutely nuts to have a period of 18-months go by, before they could actually get their act together and transfer the lease.” Cr Davies also told radio host, Ray Hadley, that the NSW Planning Act was “hopeless”, and that Inland Petroleum had to lodge three development approvals, as well as three traffic management plans, for a site which had been an established fuel station for many decades. Mr Gartside told the Narromine Star, that a lot of the local frustration came from the economic hit the town has taken in the last three months. “Agricultural businesses are struggling, because they need diesel. The retail sector – the lack of a fuel station has had an intense impact on that. Continued page 3
