Local heroes honoured at 2023 Australia Day awards

2023 Narromine Australia Day recipients. LOCAL heroes for both Narromine and Trangie were duly honoured at this year’s Australia Day Awards held last week in bright, warm weather. Narromine’s Australia Day event was again hosted at Dundas Park on Thursday morning, bringing together the Narromine community who enjoyed a free barbecue breakfast thanks to the Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Generosity Church, and where a new Australian citizen was also welcomed into the community. Narromine’s Citizen of the Year for 2023, was awarded to Sally Everett who has been involved in the Narromine community for many years. Her good works include volunteering for Narromine Jets

2023 Trangie Australia Day recipients.

Rugby League Club, the Narromine MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Support Group and, more recently, raising local awareness about the dangers of Melanoma and the importance of regular skin checks. Through Sally’s newly – found passion on this issue, she is determined to promote the work of the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation and “Mission Melanoma – Doing it For Lionel”. All awards were presented by Narromine’s Australia Day Ambassador, Donna Burton, an astronomer and science communicator who is based at the Milroy Observatory located in Coonabarabran. Trangie’s Australia Day celebrations were held later

on Thursday evening at the Trangie Bowling Club with Alan Davey the local Australia Day Ambassador. Mr Davey is a former private investigator and author of the book about his sometimes – dangerous work, The Lone Operative. Trangie’s Citizen of the Year for 2023, is Tracey Bennett, the much – loved local who was recognised for always assisting those in the community who are in need. “The Australia Day awards recognise individuals and groups for their tireless work within the community that contributes to the Narromine Shire as a friendly place to live, with a strong sense of community,” narromine Shire Deputy Mayor, Cr Dawn Col-
