Aussie country music star Adam Brand
Country star a drawcard for record Truck and Tractor Show By LUKE WILLIAMS PREPARATIONS are now underway for the third Bi-Annual Trangie Truck and Tractor Show – and organisers hope it could be the biggest event yet! They expect at least 5000 attendees at the August occasion, with some optimists estimating as many as 10,000 could show up, easily smashing the previous record of 3000 set in 2019. Aussie country music star, Adam Brand who has been signed up as a headline performer, is one major reason for the expected big crowds, Organising Committee member, Rob McCutcheon explained. “Adam Brand is a big highlight for us,” he told the Narromine Star. “When you consider that 3000 people came in 2019, and we didn’t have him – well, that gives you some idea of where we might be heading this year,” he said with confidence. Problem gambling fear, as local pokie profits surge 50 per cent THE region’s 120 poker machines have seen a significant upsurge in profits over recent months. Data recently released by Liquor and Gaming NSW shows that the pokies that are operated across seven clubs in the region, increased their profits last year by nearly $1 million on 2021 levels. Narromine Shire clubs made a total of $2,428,202 profit between June 1, 2022, and November 30, 2022. This was up from the $1,998,789 profit made between December 2021 and May 2022, and the $1,513,656 made from June to November 2021. Across the State, NSW residents lost a massive $4.3 billion to poker machines in the last six months of last year – a massive $820 million more than the total losses recorded in a similar period before the pandemic. A CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes spokesperson, on hearing of the surging local numbers, told the Narromine Star, that they feared that some local pokie players, had now crossed the line into problematic gambling. “Signs that problem gambling has taken hold, include when it impacts on your relationships, money shortages, you fall behind on your rent or mortgage, staying up

PHOTO: REUTERS all hours to gamble, missing work to gamble, not attending social functions.” The spokesperson said, that Narromine’s gambling problem, has an array of causes that reflect issues to do with this complex problem Statewide. “It can be genetic; it can be fi nancial pressure, it can be that you have a debt, and you think gambling could be a quick fi x,” they said. The Perrottet State Government, before being voted out in March, had planned major gaming reforms after having joined forces with members of the Crossbench, and had vowed to introduce cashless payment systems to reduce
problem gambling. The $344 million plan, would have seen legislation introduced to ensure a staged transition to universal cashless gambling, between 2024 and 2028. “It will save lives,” Mr Perrottet said of his proposals at their launch. “It will protect jobs and ensure that our communities across NSW are stronger now and into the future,” he added. Proponent of the cashless gambling initiative, Independent MP for Sydney, Alex Greenwich, said that the latest gambling profit results, show that the problem has only gotten worse. “We need to take real action
in NSW, to make sure the trial for cashless gaming, is as robust as possible,” he said. The new Labor Government, has itself committed to a 12-month trial of cashless gaming cards for 500 poker machines starting on July 1 this year. Premier Chris Minns, however, has made no promises on a Statewide roll-out of the reform. “I’m not committing to that,” he said. “What I am committing to, is a process where we can have an evidence-based response and approach to this complicated policy area,” he added. The Government has also pledged to reduce the feedin limit for new machines to $500, ban external signage promoting gaming – including “VIP Lounge” signage – and reducing the number of machines across the State. The CatholicCare spokesperson said that, due its complexity, problem gambling required a multi-faceted approach. “Having a counsellor that deals with a gambling addiction, and then having a financial counsellor too, for managing the debt that often comes with gambling,” they said, was one successful form of therapy.
