THERE IS ONLY

ONE WAY Economic crisis don’t strike exclusively one nation or continent. The world has just overcome a major worldwide crisis and tourism is getting back on its feet. Still, nations around the world occasionally go through hardships that affect the travel industry to a greater or lesser degree. Sometimes, it affects faraway countries that bear no relation to that situation.

These are the pros and cons of being interconnected.

Today, dollar appreciation in Latin America, Europe and other regions has to be taken into consideration and can make people planning to visit the US have second thoughts. It is not something market-specific, but something that has happened before and whose scope is comprehensive. To their advantage, the industry knows how to deal with the highs and lows of the economies: it is time to be visible, to show value added to products and services, and to offer deals. Whether in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Europe… Wherever there is the perception that traveling to the US has become more expensive.

In addition to the aforementioned dollar appreciation issue, Brazil, which enters President Dilma Rousseff’s second term, up to 2018, is going through a political crisis, which affects its economy and several development indexes. After years of vigorous growth, without infrastructure to match it, Brazil slowed down, but has not stopped. Major events, such as the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, as well as the fact that we are the largest economy in Latin America, with 200 million consumers, don’t let the country come to a halt.

We are and will continue to be the world’s seventh economy. Brazilians make up the bulk of long-distance (overseas) tourists visiting the US, and the majority of tourists in several destinations, such as Miami. Moreover, we still have great potential for growth in terms of international travel. Besides, Brazilians have permanently added traveling (domestically or internationally) to their shopping carts.

The crisis in the early 2000s taught us that long-term visibility in the Brazilian market, overcoming instabilities and crisis and taking advantage of prosperous times, is fundamental.

Proximity with the industry ensures loyalty, continuous business flow, expertise and reaping the harvest of good and bad times. Brazilians choose Florida and New York not only for the shorter distance (flights to Europe take longer, but receive many of our tourists, for instance), but also because they are destinations, just like Las Vegas or Orlando’s theme parks, which have had constant representation and/or actions in Brazil for years. They have never ceased to qualify, visit and promote themselves on our shores. Currently, New York and Orlando receive over one million Brazilian visitors each.

BRAZIL? Brazil is the 7th global economy

According to specialists, the Brazilian economy will return to growth in 2016. But, meanwhile, Brazilians will continue consuming products and travel in 2015, especially with airlines ticket promotions and the (now) consolidated habit of travelling.

The Tourism and Travel Industry should have similar results as in 2014, with a stronger domestic market.

Brazilians spent US$ 26 billion abroad in 2014. Shopping may suffer a small decrease in 2015, due to the strong dollar (against Brazil’s currency, Real). Early data from the first 4 months of 2015 show a 10% decrease, with US$5.2 billion spent from January until April.

Brazil is the 3 overseas market to the US, behind the UK and Japan (2014). Brazil sent 2.26 million tourists to the US last year (a 10% increase). rd

In 2014, US$ 6 billion were spent in international air tickets in Brazil. US$ 5 billion of that through travel agencies, tour operators, consolidators, OTAs and other intermediary players (what we call indirect sales).

Average in 2015 (January through April): R$ 3.2. In 2015 consumers are waiting longer to purchase their travel products and services, expecting the exchange rates to go down (which happened in the beginning of May) and the promotions, especially from airlines (which started in April).

In the first quarter of 2015, the number of international air tickets sold by travel agencies, consolidators, tour operators and OTAs, was almost the same as compared to 2014 (a small decline of 5%), but the sales amount went down 20%. In Reais (our currency) the sales were a bit higher than 2014, because of the strong dollar. The clients and travel agents expect the offers and discounts to continue into the second semester, to encourage travel to international destinations.

The second semester, which is usually better for the travel industry in Brazil, should also see the first results of the Brazilian government’s measures to strengthen the economy.

Brazil finished 2014 within the top five countries that sent more tourists to the United States, with 2.26 million people, a 9.9% increase in relation to 2013. The leaders of the list are Canada (22.9 MM tourists), Mexico (17.3 MM), United Kingdom (3.9 MM) and Japan (3.5 MM).

For domestic travel, the percentage of direct sales by airlines (B2C) is higher, between 30% and 40%, leaving the B2B with 60% to 70%.

The 20 largest Brazilian airports were responsible for 79.61% of departures of domestic flights. Of these, eight are in the Southeast, four in the Northeast, three in the Midwest Region, three in the Southern Region and two in the North. The two airports with the highest number of takeoffs were Guarulhos and Congonhas, which together accounted for 18.55% of domestic flight landings.

According to the Brazilian Association of Airlines, Abear, more than 3.6 million passengers embarked on international trips from Brazil in 2014, representing an increase of 2.5% when compared to the previous year. In its Agenda 2020, which is an analyses of the Brazilian airline sector, Abear shows that the prospect of growth in passenger transport by air should increase from 114 million passengers in 2014 to 127 million in 2015, including domestic and international flights.

parks; the American beach structure (since there are beaches in Brazil, they think, “why bother?”); secondary cities and their attractions; parks outside of Orlando, Tampa or Anaheim; other traveling options within the USA; and tax-free shopping locations in the country.

HELP BRAZILIANS: understand that traditional malls are quite different than and as attractive as outlets, which have become an obsession, and it is worth visiting both; understand that upscale lodging is safer and more comfortable, among other benefits; and that purchasing tickets and services beforehand may be an advantage. Quite often, they purchase them at the destination and end up paying more, in addition to not receiving any assistance.

HOW

THE TRAVEL AND TOURISM INDUSTRY WORKS IN BRAZIL

In the domestic market, the corporate segment is responsible for most of the revenue for airline companies, about 60% to 70% of their income. Leisure accounts for the remaining 30%, but with a larger share in the number of tickets, due to the average ticket being lower. 60% of sales are estimated to have intermediaries (agencies, TMCs, OTAs, operators and consolidators).

In the international market, for foreign airline companies indirect sales account for 80% to 95% of sales, and 75% for the domestic companies who fly internationally.

Most tickets fall into the leisure segment.

M A IN PL AYER S : Travel agencies: there are nearly 11 thousand travel agencies in Brazil, which need to be registered with the Ministry of Tourism. The number of home-based agencies and freelance workers, who issue tickets at operators and agencies, has been growing. Abav is the main travel agency association, with nearly 3.2 thousand members across Brazil. They hold an annual B2B-only event in SĂŁo Paulo.

Corporate travel agencies/TMCs: specialized in corporate travels, they may dedicate 10% to 30% to leisure. The main entity is Abracorp, which encompasses the main TMCs. The small ones, however, are scattered around the country and generally issue their tickets at consolidators. Last year, Abracorp agencies (30 members) sold US$6.36 billion in products and services, with US$2 billion in flight tickets and US$128 million in international lodging.

Tour operators: the main ones are members of Braztoa, which

generated US$5.1 billion (US$2.1 billion from only one member, CVC).

There were six million passengers and the most sought after destinations were the US and Europe, with over US$530 million in sales each (source: Braztoa Annual Report 2014). Although CVC is the largest operator, representing mass tourism, there are several niche operators with strength in markets and segments, showing an important distribution, with different fields of activity and penetration around Brazil. The only operator to disclose its revenue is CVC. The others are estimated to be, in this order, Trend Operadora (the only one, aside from CVC, to have revenue of more than R$1 billlion/ US$428 million, mostly from hotel bookings), Visual Turismo, Tam Viagens, MMTGapnet, Agaxtur, Nascimento Turismo, Queensberry, Flytour Viagens, RCA, Designer, among others. MARKET TRENDS Increased competition in the tour operator segment, despite some players’ occasional hardships Bet on niches Concentrate issuances on consolidators, which cater to small and medium agencies

Consolidators: consolidators are strong in Brazil and the

largest individual sellers of flight tickets. The five largest consolidators (Rextur Advance, Flytour, Esferatur, Gapnet and Ancoradouro) sold US$3.63 billion in 2014. Their association, AirTkt, formed by these five consolidators in 2015, is expected to reach 18 members by the end of the year. The largest consolidator, Rextur Advance, with annual revenue of US$1.4 billion, was purchased by CVC and sold more than 200 thousand air tickets to the US in 2014. Flytour opened its own operator two years ago, which will hold events aimed at end users starting in October. Their specialty is corporate trips, and they are one of the most comprehensive groups in Brazil.

Esferatur has also started its own operator, Orinter, which is strong in the south of Brazil, and growing elsewhere. Two years ago, they formed a partnership with Mix Tour, which strengthened them in the interior of São Paulo. Gapnet has a strong presence from its operator, MMTGapnet, and Ancoradouro is strong in the interior of São Paulo. They also have an operator.

OTAs: Decolar.com (which received an investment from Expedia this year), Submarino Viagens (B2W) and Viajanet lead in leisure; Booking.com, in hotels; and there are also Expedia, Hoteis.com, Malapronta.com, Trivago, and other players. It is one of the fastest growing markets in Brazil. Trend Operadora has a B2B OTA, called Shop Hotel.

Travel managers: important for event planning and cor-

porate trips, they are represented by two entities, Alagev and TMG, in addition to informal work groups. However, most are scattered around and are not members of any entity. Alagev holds an annual event, in February, in São Paulo, called Lacte, aimed at managers.

Acte and GBTA also have partnerships and representatives in Brazil.

Growth of the leisure and corporate market, because traveling is still considered a potential segment in Brazil Stabilization of indirect sales – airlines have reached a direct domestic sales level that seems to have plateaued.

Growth of OTAs - Major players like Expedia and Priceline have already landed in Brazil.

Fairs are showing signs of fraying, which benefits big companies and makes representatives and destinations invest in smaller operations and events throughout Brazil.

More scattered channels and niches, despite the consolidation of companies, make it more difficult to advertise, promote and sell.

Consumers connected to the internet 24/7, researching, comparing and making sure of what they want.

Strong social networks, especially Facebook for the masses, with over 90 million Brazilian users; Instagram for high-spending travelers; and Twitter for B2B. YouTube is the second largest and the fastest growing in Brazil.

Brazilian people love to share short and humorous videos.

More ocean and river cruises overseas. It is estimated that 150 thousand Brazilians travel abroad to go on cruises every year. The Caribbean and the Mediterranean are the preferred choices, but Alaska, North of Europe, Asia, and special trips have grown substantially.

Main US competitors in 2015: Europe (due to dollar appreciation and number of flights from Brazil), Asia (Brazilians are discovering the continent of amazing experiences), the Caribbean (many visa-free options), Chile and Brazil (due to the more expensive dollar).

TR AVEL PAYMENT l In Brazil, travelers can buy a pack-

age, an airline ticket or any travel products and divide the payments (generally from 5 to 10 times, in fixed amounts). The majority of Bra-

zilians opt for this form of payment.

Credit cards are very popular but for purchases outside of Brazil, there’s an added 6% tax.

Expect some cash payments to increase as Brazilians are using cash more often.

l Brazilians like to know the final price of products and services, so give them a total that includes all incidentals so that there are no surprises later.

The luxury

market also maintained a good growth rate, despite

economic uncertainties this year. The opening of globally recognized luxury brand stores that have never had representation in Brazil proved to be a good bet for a segment that grew

more than 6% in 2014.

Tourism is another market that keeps a steady pace of growth. There has been an increase on the number of Brazilians who travel throughout the country as well as the number of foreigners visiting

The expansion was supported by rising per household disposable income levels, coupled with a steep increase in total consumer lending including mortgages, which grew by 73.1% in real terms between 2009 and 2014 to reach BRL1.0 trillion (US$456 billion) in 2014. During the period of 2015–2030, we forecast Brazil’s total consumer expenditure to see real growth of 3% annually on average. Euromonitor data from national accounts shows that over the 2009–2014 period, Brazil’s best performing sectors were hotels and catering, registering a 32.4% increase in real terms during this period, followed by communications with a 31.6% rise in real terms over the same period.

The expansion of both of these categories was backed by growth of the Brazilian middle class, which has driven rising demand for restaurant and accommodation services, as well as communication services like mobile phone and Internet services. All these payments compete for consumer’s Reais and leave fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies with a smaller share of the consumer pocket.
