> Welcome Pan’s journey in the UK is set to lift to yet another level in 2006 as BAS continues on its mission of bringing steel pan and its music to the wider UK audience. Pan Explosion 2005, in Portsmouth, proved to be a successful event; and now all attention is honed on hosting Pan Explosion 2006 in Aston, Birmingham on the 28/5/2006. The sixth annual Trafalgar Square Pan Jamboree is scheduled to be held on the first Sunday in August 2006 with further concerts in Leicester Square through closer working relationships with the GLA and Westminster Council. BAS has also undertaken a programme of education which would lead to accreditation and support pan tutors in their current role. Metronomes Steel Orchestra (MSO) was formed in 1973 by Phil Dubique and Irvin Corridan. This family based steel band is an established UK steel pan icon and has effectively contributed to this wonderful art form for more than thirty years. SO is currently managed by Eversley ‘Breeze’ Mills - vice chairman of BAS. He has injected a new vibrancy into the band which comprises of men and women, young and old whose talent and dedication to developing their own individual skills is outstanding. These players are constantly extending their expertise and developing an in-depth knowledge of the evolution of this musical instrument called the steel pan.

M

MSO is committed to the principle that all people have the right to equal treatment

MSO is committed to the principle everyone has the right to equal treatment. The orchestra is therefore opposed to all forms of discrimination and will insure that no member or visitor will be treated less favourably than another on the grounds of their race, colour, ethnic or national origin, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation. MSO is also opposed to discrimination because of an individual’s religious, cultural or political belief, except where those beliefs would make it impossible for that person to comply with any part of the Equal Opportunities Policy. The orchestra has two main principles, to promote the steel pan art form and Carnival culture in the UK and to play a positive role within the community and to encourage musical development and self-confidence for all.

They have had several major achievements including appearing in ‘Songs of Praise’, winners of the 1976 UK Steel Band Music Festival, the opening of the Channel Tunnel, BAS Pan Explosion winners in 2000/2001 and champions of the UK National Panorama four times and runners up five times. They have also won the Notting Hill “On the Road Competition” twice. MSO have completed many worldwide tours and in September 2005 performed in Leipzig, Germany on an invitation from the T&T High Commission. They are guaranteed to set any stage alight with their vibrancy and versatility. The orchestra generates that genuine Carnival atmosphere from the instant it arrives on the scene. Metronomes repertoire experiments with a number of genres in music, be it jazz, classical, soul, reggae, calypso etc. This ensures greater versatility and something that is not new to the band, increased opportunity. MSO have established their place at the forefront of UK steel orchestral music and plays an active role in the British Association of Steelbands. PAN PODIUM > 05

‘CHAMPIONS OF STEEL’

The British Association of Steelbands celebrated their 27th Champions of Steel, Jouvert and Best band on the Road competitions in 2005 with the theme, ‘MAKE POVERTY HISTORY’. All Pan Musicians at these competitions wore the white wrist bands in support of this global effort. On the other hand, Notting Hill Carnival’s theme for 2005 was ‘UNITY IN DIVERSITY’ and you only have to take a look at the pannists to realise that the steel pan is the perfect machinery to promote this theme.

2005 SAW EBONY SUCCESSFUL IN CAPTURING THEIR FOURTEENTH ‘CHAMPIONS OF STEEL’ TITLE SINCE THIS COMPETITION BEGAN IN 1978

STARDUST LED BY THE YOUNG AND TALENTED BRENT HOLDER WAS TRULY THE ‘DARK HORSE’ IN THIS RACE. BRENT PULLED OUT ALL THE STOPS TO LEAD STARDUST TO THE RUNNERS UP POSITION IN GREAT STYLE

n the 27th August 2005, Horniman’s Pleasance, Kensal Road, London was the venue for the annual national steelband musical battle. Eight steel orchestras with over 500 pan musicians who practiced for hundreds of hours played thousands of pan instruments on the night; all vying for the prestigious title of the Notting Hill, ‘Champions of Steel’.

O

2005 saw Ebony successful in capturing their fourteenth ‘Champions of Steel’ title since this competition began in 1978. The last time they won was back in 2001 and the loss of their pan yard earlier this year saw them overcome challenge after challenge to achieve this memorable victory. Ebony and their world renowned musical arranger, Anise ‘Haffers’ Hadeed, both currently hold the world records for winning the most Panorama competitions. Three steelbands chose to play Oba’s ‘Action’ Ebony, Glissando and Real Steel whilst Stardust, Mangrove and Croydon opted for De Fosto’s, ‘From Beyond’. Leaving Southside who played their rendition of Orville Wright’s, ‘In De Savannah’ and Metronomes who played ‘Dead or Alive’. It was certainly a musical war on the night and a great task for the judges. Ebony’s catchy rendition saw them to the winner’s podium. Stardust led by the young and talented Brent Holder was truly the ‘dark horse’ in this race. Brent pulled out all the stops to lead Stardust to the runners up position in great style, the last time they achieved this position in this competition was back in 1989. This combination of Brent and Stardust seems to be a new phase in Stardust’s development for the future. Southside Harmonics led by their established musical director, Eustace Benjamin, certainly made their presence felt with their performance of In De Savannah that achieved third place. Southside returned to this competition in 2003 after a two year break. In fourth place was Glissando under the musical direction of world recognised veteran arranger Rudy ‘Two Lef’ Smith had the crowds wanting more of his sweet and tastefully arranged, Action.

Metronomes, one of the UK’s established steelband icon captured fifth place with their vibrant rendition of Dead or Alive musically arranged by world renowned Ken ‘Professor’ Philmore. Metro last competed in this competition back in 2003. Leroy Clarke, the young and gifted arranger from Plymouth took Real Steel to sixth place with his musical arrangements. This is their fourth appearance at the National Panorama where they have showed great consistency and musical ability. In seventh place was last year’s defending champions, Mangrove, with their rendition of From Beyond musically arranged by the talented Kyron Akal. Mangrove was victorious four times in the last six years in this competition. PAUL DOWIE, MUSICAL DIRECTOR OF CROYDON STEEL ORCHESTRA WITH HIS YOUNG AND TALENTED PLAYERS HAS ONLY BEEN IN THIS COMPETITION SINCE 2003 AND HAS CERTAINLY INSTILLED A GREAT SENSE OF COMPETITIVENESS IN HIS PLAYERS, playing in the final position their enthusiasm on the night was truly awesome, this was noted through their melodious chanting of CSO before their deliverance of their rendition of De Fosto’s, From Beyond that afforded them eighth place in this year’s competition This influx of young UK pan arrangers has certainly lifted this competition to another level and will no doubt continue to bring new life and enthusiasm into this annual event. We look forward to the wealth of steelband music yet to come.

> WHO’S WHO

Gerald

FORSYTH Growing up in Ethel Street, St James, P.O.S with its diverse communities afforded Gerald the opportunity to experience their various musical and cultural forms - Shango and Hosay drums, the Tamboo Bamboo - but it was the advent of the steelpan that was by far the most influential on his life. e was introduced to the piano at an early age and it was his mother’s wish that he became a highly accomplished musician. However, in spite of his parent’s disapproval of the ‘instrument of the underclass’, he chose to use the benefits of his musical training to nurture his interest and develop his playing abilities.

H

In the 1940s he began playing pan at the Newtown Boys School stealing away to take a knock whenever the opportunity presented itself. However, ever mindful of his responsibilities to his sibling, Sam, he used to regularly chase his younger brother away from the pan yard. Despite her disappointment at his choice of instruments, Gerald’s mother urged him to play with Highlanders Steel Band

because they were light skinned, halfwhite, half-Chinese. Yet, he tells us, “those nice little social guys would steal your chicken in the night to make a cook!” Instead, it was Invaders Steel Band that was to be the early influence in his life. Although he was generally a fine, up standing member of his community, he appears to have had a trend for not wanting to agree to his mother’s wishes. When she made arrangements for him to attend the entry exam to attend Trinidad’s most prestigious boys’ secondary school, Queen’s Royal College, Gerald intentionally missed the appointment. His preference was to attend the Modern Secondary School because his friends were there.

After leaving secondary school he formed the Green Eyes Steelband, named after a nightclub in close proximity to their pan yard. Some of the players included CorbeauJack Riley, Natsy and Bambi Contant, Boy Blue Mansing and Clifford Gill. Later, he turned his attention to pan making and tuning, studying under the illustrious Ellie Mannette at the ‘University of Pan’ – more commonly known as “Invaders Pan Yard”. Through Gerald’s instructions, his life long friend Michael ‘Natsy’ Contant made chromatic pans and Green Eyes Steelband was the first steel band worldwide to have them. As his tuning skills developed, he travelled to other West Indian islands to practice his trade and in 1962 he migrated to Britain where he started gigging with Boots Davidson, Zigilee Constantine, Eamann Thorpe and Desmond Bowen. In 1964, he formed the Invaders Combo, which played regularly at the legendary Albany Pub and by 1966 he was in America teaching the pan. On his return to the UK he formed a combo band and they toured Belgium, Italy and Spain. Whilst in Italy, he was approached by members of the Southern Symphony Steel Band with whom he toured Japan. In 1966, he returned to Britain and pioneered the teaching of the steelpan at the Islington Green School where he formed the New Sensation Steel Band. He will tell you that, despite the claim of other bands, it was New Sensation that won the first pan festival in Britain. Gerald with other pan tutors was responsible for setting up the London Schools Steel Orchestra and in 1978, he was appointed to the post of Instrumental Organiser with an office in the GLC through Audrey Dennett. By 1990, he was responsible for pan being part of the curriculum in over 160 schools across London. He was instrumental in the formation of the Pan Players Association. As well as tuning pans for a number of steelbands, this gentleman continues to teach the intricacies of playing pan and welcomes every opportunity to pass on his knowledge to future generations so that the art can evolve with time. This gentleman is renowned for his love of cars – Rolls Royce, Porsche - he has them all! He takes great pride in telling people that pan has given him a high standard of living and allowed him to travel the world. In 2005, BAS added Gerald to their Hall of Fame list for the promotion and development of the steel pan art form.

ROGER

Greenidge

A man, his music and chosen instrument... ...The steelpan

Roger was born in Trinidad and has been playing the steel drums since the early 1970s. Music appears to command an important place in the Greenidge family; generations of their clan are involved in music and steel band fraternity worldwide. In 1982, he joined the WITCO Desperadoes Steel Orchestra widely recognised as one of the world’s premier steel orchestras. As a member of Desperadoes, he served as both a performer and musical arranger. His performances won him eight 1st place awards. Roger has been a musical arranger for a number of performing groups in both the New York and Washington regions and has recorded with Rap artiste, NAS. He is currently sharing his many talents and outstanding tutoring skills in pan music as the musical director of the East of the River Boys and Girls Steelband. He also works with Pan Masters Steel Orchestra in Washington DC as one of their musical arrangers and various other bands as a soloist and is the steel drum player for the Ewabo Band. Roger also played with the Mangrove Steelband in 2003 at the UK National Panorama competition where they were victorious with Len ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe’s, ‘Music in We Blood’.

EBONY THE FIRST BLACK ORGANISATION TO RECEIVE THE QUEENS AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE Ebony Steel Band is considered to be Europe’s finest. They are the first black organisation to receive the Queens Award for Voluntary Service at a ceremony held at the RBKC Town Hall on Wednesday 8th Dec 2005. Considered “unsung heroes” because of their 34 years of services to the disabled, young people and to a disadvantaged community, they are also Europe’s Steelband Festival Champions in 2000/2002 and hold the world title for winning the most Panorama competitions – fourteen with nine consecutive wins. Despite this, like many bands, since January 2005, they have had to relocate four times since the Westway Development Trust made them vacate their large panyard on Acklam Road where they were resident since 1976.

10 > PAN PODIUM

The Queens Award was presented to Ebony’s Director, Pepe Francis, by the Queens Lieutenant Richard WalkerArnott; at the Kensington Townhall. The evening which included a performance by the Ebony Steelband was witnessed by many dignitaries including Mayor Cllr Warwick Lightfoot, Billy Ocean, Joanne Yee, Ian Comfort, Cllr Simon Blanchflower, Her Excellency The High Commissioner of Trinidad & Tobago, Mrs Glenda Morean Phillip, Cllr Merrick Cockell, Sonny Blacks, Shabaka Thompson, Jenny Gormlie, Tom Mabey, David Elford, Lewis Benn and Ricky Belgrave.

e toured with Desperadoes from 1983 to 1991 visiting New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Martinique and Key West Florida, some of his New York performances included appearances at the Apollo Theatre and at the Carnegie Hall with Jimmy Buffet and the New York Pops Orchestra.

H

SPEAKING TO ROGER ABOUT HIS VISION FOR THE STEEL PAN HE STATED, ‘I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE STEEL PAN COMMAND ITS RIGHTFUL PODIUM IN CONVENTIONAL GROUPS AS THE GUITAR OR PIANO. THE PANNIST MUST BE MORE INVOLVED WITH ALL TYPES OF MUSICAL GROUPS. When you think about the pan players in steel bands around the world, they are probably the largest groups of musicians in any one city or country.’ Roger went on to say that he would like to see a World Panorama competition hosted by Pan Trinbago which would afford global pannists a podium to share a wealth of steelband music.

ROGER TOURED WITH JIMMY BUFFET APPEARING IN HOUSTON, MIAMI, WEST PALM BEACH, NEW JERSEY, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN AND LONG ISLAND. HE HAS ALSO PERFORMED AS A SPECIAL GUEST ARTISTE WITH DESPERADOES IN CONCERTS FEATURING NANCY WILSON, LIZA MINNELLI AND ARETHA FRANKLIN. PAN PODIUM > 11

Pantaloni

Pantaloni was founded in Zurich in May 1992 and currently has twelve members - two males and ten females, from all walks of life with ages ranging from 24 to 60. After 13 years, half of their original members are still active in the band; this speaks volumes for the warm and congenial atmosphere within Pantaloni. Their musical director is the everpopular, David Henry (www.steelbands.ch), who has been with them since their inception.

ver the years, David’s influence has been so notable that it is hard to imagine Pantaloni without him. He is highly regarded by all members not only for his excellent musical arrangements but also for his great commitment as their teacher resulting in their wide repertoire which includes everything from calypso, chachacha, funk, reggae, rock ‘n’ roll, salsa and popular Swiss songs to classical music. Their success lies perhaps in this very versatility.

Pantaloni have been invited to play at a number of public events in various Swiss towns. “Zürifäscht” and the “Zürcher Nordfest” in Zurich, the Steelband Festival in Zug as well as sporting events such as the Disabled Sports Day in Magglingen and City Nordic Walking. In addition, they have played at various music festivals in Southern Germany and perform privately at company events, birthday parties and

weddings on a regular basis. Several of their members have also gained wider experience by participating in other steelband projects such as, Zurich Renegades, ZR2, Notting Hill CarnivalSwiss Fantasy Steelband and Swiss Percussion, Swisstrin and Panch Each year, as part of their musical development, they organise a workshop, either in the Swiss Alps, Ticino in Southern Switzerland or in the Black Forest in Germany. This enables them to extend their repertoire, but above all it affords them the opportunity to bond as a unit whilst enjoying their music. In 1999, they released their first CD entitled, “Light & Shadow” and hope to produce a second CD in the near future. Dear Pan Podium

Dear Pan Podium

Growing up with a strong steel pan influence gave me the opportunity to fully appreciate the difficult journey that it has endured. A pan man is now called a pannist or pan musician and the art form is no longer affiliated to hooligans and bad johns. In fact, we now have World Steel Band Festivals with global participants and the steel pan continues its journey to conqueror all music forums and venture into uncharted areas. Pan Podium’s magazine and website have proved to be excellent promotional machinery for the art form. Keep Pan Alive!

I have been teaching and playing steel pans for over 22 years at Foxwood School and then as a peripatetic steel pan tutor and steel pan development officer for the Leeds Music Support Service. Since that day in 1982 when I first set eyes on and fell in love with those old rusty oil drums in the music room of Foxwood School, I have dedicated my life to steel pans. Three of my five children play and one of my older daughters also teaches.

STEEL ORCHESTRA

(New York State Assemblyman Frank Seddio). Dem Stars Steel Orchestra became a New York State non-profit organization in 2001. Their objectives are: to develop and promote awareness in the culture of the islands of the Caribbean; to foster an appreciation of the steel pan instrument through nationwide performances, instructional classes and to manage and operate a bank of musicians skilled in playing the steel pan for the purpose of giving performances that would develop an understanding and appreciation of steel pan music. On Memorial Day 2002, Dem Stars Inc. had its first installation of officers and launch at the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club in Brooklyn with performances by the Ujamma Dancers, Utopia Pan Soul, Jason Peanut Isaac, Philippine-American Dancers, and Dem Stars Steel Orchestra.

Dem Stars Steel Orchestra was founded in Belmont, Port of Spain, in 1951. The members were family and friends, guys like Slapper Harding, George Hinds, Ricky Hinds, Ken Jones, and the late Nello Mitchell.

‘Under the leadership of Anthony 'Ike' Hinds, the band has become a force in the New York steel band world.’

Being members of Dem Boys, they decided to form a stage side, so Dem Stars was formed. During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, Dem Stars made their first road appearance with Dem Boys. But due to the steel band riots of that period, Dem Stars never returned to the streets. During the 1960's, family members migrated to the USA. The younger family members decided on a 'rebirth'. In 2000, Dem Stars Steel Orchestra was reborn in Brooklyn, New York. Under the leadership of Anthony 'Ike' Hinds, the band has become a force in the

New York steel band world. Being one of the few steel bands that function yearround, Dem Stars has had many performances. Within the past two years, such events have included performances at the World Trade Centre in 2000, Kings County Hospital Fair, St. Jude International Night, National Night against Crime (NYPD), Washington DC Carnival, United States Steel Band Association (USSA) New York Panorama 2001 - (where Dem Stars came sixth in a field of about twelve other premiere steel bands), Long Island Carnival, the Reflections in Steel Christmas concert at Brooklyn College, and the annual Christmas House Lighting

In the fall of 2003, Dem Stars started an after-school program where kids are able to do their homework, learn computer theory, and the steel pan instrument. In addition, six members of the adult staff went to Trinidad and performed with the Starlift Steel Orchestra for Carnival 2004. by Anthony ‘Ike’ Hinds For more information on Dem Stars, call Ike on: (718) 257-0756 or email him at: ike@demstars.com.

The evenings continued with youth wind bands from Northamptonshire, Cornwall and Abraham Darby School, Telford, with finales from symphony orchestras from individual schools in Manchester and Bakewell and a youth orchestra from London.

After some soul searching and advice from Helen, his Swedish wife, they moved to Sweden in 1964. ince his arrival in Lund he has made a significant contribution to the steel band culture in Sweden. In 1969, he introduced the first steel band to Sweden. Trevor is a music teacher in Swedish schools and uses the steel pan as one of his chosen instruments. Some of his former students are now players in his Sweet Pan Steel Band that received cultural awards in 1987/88 from the State’s Cultural Organisation. In 1971, he performed on Swedish TV for the first time and received a Swedish cultural award in 1974, for his contribution to the steel pan art form.

Steelworks are based in Middlesbrough in the north east of England. In 2002, they started life as a pilot project to introduce pans into the cultural life of Middlesbrough funded by Middlesbrough Council Arts Development and the Arts Council of England North East. This introduction was overseen by the experienced NTSB band leader, Dave Edwards. n 2003, their current musical director, Brian Wise, took over the running of the band, a position that included project management, tutoring, arranging and fundraising. Brian, a resident of the North East for the last 25 years but originally from South East London, brought with him; experience as a senior manager in education as well as a background of Jazz and contemporary music to the band.

I

Steelworks grew to a band of 50 musicians, which really meant four bands under one banner. “A great squad with a strong bench and much rotation” said Brian. The band runs weekly practice sessions every Thursday throughout the year. These sessions enable players to learn new songs and to concentrate on perfecting old ones which are played on gigs and at community events when the four bands play collectively. Recent gigs have included 22 > PAN PODIUM

‘we are a relatively new band in the tradition of steel pans in the UK but we have much support from the communities in Middlesbrough and the North East.’

In 2001, when the UK celebrated the 50th anniversary of the arrival of TASPO; Trevor was presented with an award from the Director of the Commonwealth Arts and Cultural Foundation, Sonny Blacks, for his contribution to the steel pan culture in Europe. In 1992, he performed at the Trinidad Carnival and has played at the Cathedral in Lund on several occasions both as a soloist and with his steel band. Trevor and Sweet Pan steel band have performed

on Swedish TV several times and have toured Scandinavia, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Trevor’s love for the art form and wanting to be self sufficient in providing instruments for himself and his band saw him pursue the manufacturing and tuning skills needed to fulfil his dream. He achieved this through self tuition. ‘It was not an easy road for me’ he stated. ‘This took me a long time to learn as there was nobody around to show me’. His drive, determination and undying passion were the driving forces behind his success.

He achieved this through self tuition. ‘It was not an easy road for me’

He loves to play pan jazz and maintains that pans can be used in all cultures and for all types of music. ‘You can just as well play Bach on the pan as Kitch’, he stated. Trevor has certainly achieved the title of the ‘Swedish Pied Piper of Pan.’

Middlesbrough Music Live, Middlesbrough Mela and the UK conference of the National Black Police Officers Association. Steelworks are regular performers in the Middlesbrough Town Centre, Park Bandstand, and Football Club. They provide schools and community workshops ensuring that the art form is properly marketed, this action has proven to attract more participants; including some ground breaking work with disabled youngsters. Speaking to Brian he stated, ‘we are a relatively new band in the tradition of steel pans in the UK but we have much support from the communities in Middlesbrough and the North East. We have ambitions to develop into a nationally recognised band, supporting events in the UK and touring the Caribbean. In working to achieve this Steel Works are proud to have been accepted as a member of the British Association of Steelbands in 2005.’ PAN PODIUM > 23

Commonly known as ‘CSI’ they look like a traditional steelband but their repertoire goes far beyond what is expected. CSI is made up of four core players who have been playing together for many years at venues all over the world and so consider themselves as experts at what they do. o event is too big or too small for CSI who love to perform. They do recordings, workshops, live performances etc. Their aim is to let the world know how versatile the steel pan really is and to continue to bring Trinidad’s national instrument to new audiences.

N

he pans were well used by groups within the school and the idea was to expand into the wider community, offering the opportunity to anyone regardless of age, social class, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and level of musical experience. Some people brought their own instruments, while others took up percussion or pans led by their two musical directors, Paul Fletcher and Gill Graham.

Almost half the band’s income is from members’ voluntary contributions with a small amount generated from performances. The shortfall has to be met by fundraising.

T

Chilli Road Band is unique in that they are a community band of adults and children playing a range of instruments: steel pans, percussion, drums, brass and woodwind. Members range from beginners to accomplished musicians performing at various events including school fairs, private parties, and other social events in the east end of Newcastle. Memorable performances include Gateshead’s Steel Spring event and the Tall Ships race on Newcastle quayside. They play an eclectic mix of music including Latin, jazz and rock. The band rehearses weekly during term time with occasional Saturday morning practices. 24 > PAN PODIUM

‘Along with five other musical groups, the Chilli Road Band has been chosen as part of Making Music’s ‘Striking Out’ project which will assist in their aims and objectives and offer advice and support towards long term funding’

Over the last year they have had up to 30 musicians, aged between 8 and 50+ with half the members playing steel pans and percussion and the rest playing saxophone, trumpet, drum kit, trombone, or clarinet. Sadly, Gill Graham decided to leave in the summer and they are looking for a replacement. In the meantime, they have benefited from a variety of visiting musicians, and Paul who is supported by a co-music apprentice from the Sage Gateshead.

REGGAE PAN CLASSICS

– Presents Light

- The Mighty Jamma

The album is by Frank Rollock Jnr. Divine, founder member of London All Stars Steel Band who travelled most of Europe, the Caribbean and Africa. He is a great believer in live music in traditional forms. This album is an exploration of his many journeys. Eight tracks of nostalgic and traditional music providing an atmosphere of easy listening. The steel pan and percussion works well as a family without dominating each other. Traditional percussion enrich the music giving it that requisite fullness. Nice simple arrangements with the final track – Light Rhythm although slightly slow makes an ideal Jouvert Jam when speeded up – time to get out your bottle and spoon and chip. To obtain a copy contact Frank Junior on frdivine@hotmail.com.

Another album in the Reggae series by Jamma which includes Reggae Pan Christmas, Reggae Pan Gospel and Mom’s Songs. This album features thirteen tracks of real golden oldies – from One Love, My Boy Lollipop and Kingston Town to Red Red Wine. Tracks 11 and 12 is dedicated to the late Lord Kitchener and his classic, Gimme de ting, in reggae style with track twelve featuring Jamma on vocals. The final track is none other than Jamma’s own catchy, Bumcy Party. Phil ‘Jamma’ Stewart is truly a successful musician/composer/arranger/entertainer. Jamma has teamed up with MACKADUB (Barry Stewart) to bring forward this musical vibe. His latest release of this fine selection of reggae oldies on pan is definitely one that should be added to your collection.

CSI – these four talented musicians have been playing music cumulatively for approximately 100 years. Their experience certainly shows in this album - their mission is to let the world know how versatile the steel pan really is and this album certainly gives them a flying start and firm foundation to achieve this goal. Thirteen tracks covering a wide selection of music of different genres. From Hot Hot Hot, Brazil, It’s Now or Never, Red Red Wine, El Cumbanchero to Who let the Dogs Out. Pan connoisseurs grab hold of this album as a valuable addition to your library.

Pantaloni is based in Switzerland and was founded in 1992. Their musical director, David Henry, has certainly instilled a great sense of musicianship in them which is revealed in this album. Eighteen tracks; which includes everything from calypso, chachacha, funk, reggae, rock ‘n’ roll; salsa and popular Swiss songs to classical music. All brought to life on the steelpan instruments through their sheer musicality. The Swiss Pan Fraternity must be proud of these musicians and this wonderful selection of music they have produced.

PEPE’S REVIEW...!! MIAMI CARNIVAL ‘05 I had the pleasure of visiting the 2005 Miami Carnival on an invitation from their CEO, Mr Selman Lewis, as the BAS representative. Although it was their 21st anniversary, I believe they will benefit from the help and expertise from those of us who have the history of Notting Hill Carnival behind us. and two other judges from Pan Trinbago were tasked with judging the Panorama/Jamboree. Five steel bands were billed to perform but transportation problems saw only four compete Tamboo Bamboo, Pepper Pot, New Generation Branches and Miami Pan Symphony.

‘Although, the judging sheets are the same used by Pan Trinbago for their National Panorama, bands have 25 minutes to play as many tunes as they wish as long as the judges are notified of titles and order of performance’

The rules and criteria for the Panorama/Jamboree in Miami are different to that of the UK and Trinidad. Although, the judging sheets are the same used by Pan Trinbago for their National Panorama, bands have 25 minutes to play as many tunes as they wish as long as the judges are notified of titles and order of performance. Two bands played up to four tunes; one played three whilst the other did two. I was very impressed with the performance and enthusiasm of the young players. The standard of musical arrangements and performances were very high. Later, I found out that playing steel pan was one of their weekly curricular activities. After the panorama/jamboree there was an interval while the bands got ready for the bomb competition, at this time we were entertained by a scintillating performance from Exodus Steel Orchestra which left the crowd mesmerised, it’s a long time since I have seen a steel band performance like that. The Panorama winners were Tamboo Bamboo, with Miami Pan Symphony in second and New Generation in third. For SUMMER 2005 | PAN PODIUM > 29

the Bomb competition, Miami Pan Symphony was victorious with Tamboo Tamboo in second and New Generation Branches in third.

‘The Carnival on the road was very interesting and maybe we in the UK could learn from this, all bands have to assemble at a specified time and once gathered, the steel bands led the procession...’ ....the rest of the procession with their sound systems were asked to follow half an hour later, affording the crowd the opportunity to fully appreciate the steel bands. The procession makes its way to the park where the bands are judged in front of a paying audience, Hyde Park would be a possibility for the UK. The ten dollars entry fee generated investment, for the Carnival. The trip was very educational and this sort of exercise should be encouraged by all the arenas and the LNHC to create harmony and understanding amongst global carnivals.
