Una stella nascente

Actor and singer Niko Ceci is not your average 14-year-old. The ambitious teen fell in love with the stage at age four and has never looked back. After almost a decade of following his dream, the performer is now looking forward to the release of a new Apple TV and Netflix series this year, and many more exciting opportunities lie ahead.

It began when the young star, barely bigger than a tot, took the stage for a play in an Italian class production. Ceci’s parents recognized their son’s natural ability and enthusiasm as something not to be ignored. “Niko performed on stage for three shows and got standing ovations,” his father Pat Ceci recalls. “I think that’s when my wife and I realized he had a real gift.”

So, Amanda and Pat Ceci took their son to a talent agent who had been recommended by a friend. They admit they were apprehensive about putting their child into a competitive industry so early, but saw how much he loved to perform. The tiny actor was only six when he began getting small roles; the rest was history. Ceci began his career in voice animation for networks including Treehouse TV and Nick Jr., appearing in TVO Kids’ Odd Squad and Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues and You. Last November, he was excited to appear in Apple TV’s second season of Circuit Breakers, ending the year with the release of a song he wrote and sang called “Christmas Morning”.

L’attore e cantante Niko Ceci non è il tipico quattordicenne. Adolescente ambizioso, si è innamorato del palcoscenico a quattro anni e non ci hai mai ripensato. Dopo quasi dieci anni all’inseguimento del suo sogno, adesso l’artista non vede l’ora che Apple TV e Netflix lancino quest’anno una nuova serie TV. Ad attenderlo ci sono molte altre occasioni entusiasmanti.

Tutto ha avuto inizio quando la giovane stella, appena più grande di un lattante, è salita sul palco per uno spettacolo di un corso di italiano. I genitori di Ceci si sono resi conto che il talento naturale e l’entusiasmo del figlio non andavano ignorati. “Nei tre spettacoli in cui ha recitato, Niko ha ottenuto standing ovation” ricorda il padre. “Penso che sia stato a quel punto che io e mia moglie ci siamo resi conto di questo suo dono”.

Così, Amanda e Pat Ceci hanno accompagnato il figlio da un talent manager raccomandatogli da un amico. Ammettono che pur essendosi preoccupati all’idea di far entrare il figlio in un settore molto competitivo così giovane, ne riconoscevano l’immenso amore per la recitazione. Il giovanissimo attore ha cominciato a ottenere piccole parti ad appena sei anni: il resto è storia. Ceci ha debuttato come doppiatore nei cartoni animati per canali come Treehouse TV e Nick Jr., comparendo nel programma di TVO Kids Odd Squad e in Blue’s Clues and You di Nickelodeon. Lo scorso novembre, è stato felice di partecipare alla seconda stagione di Circuit Breakers di Apple TV e di concludere l’anno con l’uscita di una canzone da lui scritta e cantata dal titolo “Christmas Morning”.

Although recently offered a role in a mainstream movie, Ceci chose to take an offer from Netflix instead because it felt like the right role for him. He says, “I’m so grateful to have the guidance of my manager Megan McGregor (InVision Artists), who helps find roles that fit me as a person, because that’s what’s most important to me.”

The new series (I Woke Up a Vampire) will air this spring on Family Channel, and stream on Netflix later this year. “It was the greatest experience of my life, and I learned so much from so many talented people,” he says of the filming. “I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

The young actor gives credit to his parents for allowing him to follow his dreams. He knows their support has made it possible to pursue his goals.

His dad gives the credit to his son. “He is internally motivated. He does this for no other reason than he is truly passionate about it. He is driven and has the work ethic to get things done,” he acknowledges. “My wife and I don’t have to do much…we just take him where he needs to go. He learns his lines, parts, and does all the work himself.”

The eighth grader also has to manage his education in the midst of a whirlwind career. “Luckily, I go to a private school,” he says. “The teachers are great; they work with me a lot and help me do work in advance if I’m filming or need to be on set. I know that at any minute, anything could happen—an audition could come, or I could have a singing competition—so I like to be ahead of my schoolwork as much as possible.”

Although he does miss school for acting jobs, he has a tutor on set. When it comes to his roots, this performer hailing from the Greater Toronto Area gets his love of cooking from his Italian genes. “I started cooking with my Nonna Nina. From a very young age, she taught me how to make meatballs, homemade pasta, orecchiette.”

He recalls singing with his maternal nonna as they made traditional Calabrese recipes from her upbringing in the town of Carpanzano, Cosenza, and working on classic dishes from his nonno’s commune in Rogliano, Cosenza. He is also influenced by the flavours of his father’s family, who are from Valenzano, Bari. Ceci says he likes to help make tomato sauce and participate in old customs, enjoying all the flavours of Italy. He credits his work ethic to his family’s teachings and integrity.

Although only at the beginning of his career, this rising star has learned more than just skill and stage presence through his time in the entertainment world. He’s learned how to handle setbacks, rejection and challenges. “If it’s a ‘no’, you move on and try your best for the next one. Because there’s going to be an insane amount of ‘no’…but then there’s going to be that one ‘yes’...and it’s going to change your life.”

Sebbene di recente gli sia stato offerto un ruolo in un film classico, Ceci ha scelto di accettare un’offerta di Netflix perché ha ritenuto che il ruolo gli si addicesse di più. “Sono grato di essere sotto la guida della mia agente Megan McGregor (InVision Artists), che mi aiuta a trovare ruoli che mi si addicano come persona, cosa per me importantissima” racconta.

La nuova serie (I Woke Up a Vampire) andrà in onda in primavera su Family Channel, per poi essere trasmessa su Netflix alla fine dell’anno. “È stata l’esperienza più bella della mia vita, in cui ho imparato moltissimo da persone talentuose” dice a proposito delle riprese. “Non farei a cambio per nulla al mondo”.

Il giovane attore ringrazia i genitori per avergli consentito d’inseguire il proprio sogno. Sa che è stato il loro sostegno a consentirgli di raggiungere i suoi obiettivi.

Invece, è a lui che suo padre riconosce il merito. “La sua motivazione gli viene da dentro. Lo fa solo perché ne è veramente appassionato. È determinato ed ha una grande etica del lavoro,” riconosce. “Io e mia moglie non dobbiamo fare tanto…ci limitiamo ad accompagnarlo dove deve andare. Impara il copione e le parti facendo tutto da solo”.

Lo studente dell’ottava deve inoltre gestire la scuola nel bel mezzo di questa carriera vorticosa. “Per fortuna frequento una scuola privata’” spiega. “I professori sono fantastici; mi seguono molto e mi aiutano a fare i compiti in anticipo se ci sono le riprese o se devo andare sul set. So che in qualunque momento potrebbe succedere qualcosa ed è per questo che mi piace portarmi avanti con il lavoro più che posso”.

Sebbene salti la scuola a causa del lavoro, ha anche un insegnante privato sul set.

Per quanto si parla delle radici di questo artista di Toronto, l’amore per la cucina gli viene dai geni italiani. “Ho cominciato a cucinare con mia nonna Nina. Quando ero piccolissimo, mi ha insegnato a preparare le polpette, la pasta fatta in casa, le orecchiette”.

Si ricorda di quando cantava con la nonna materna mentre preparavano piatti calabresi, tipici del paese di Carpanzano, Cosenza, o piatti tradizionali del paese del nonno, Rogliano, comune anch’esso nella provincia di Cosenza. Ad influenzarlo ci sono anche i sapori della famiglia paterna, di Valenzano, Bari, Puglia. Ceci racconta che gli piace preparare la salsa di pomodoro e partecipare alle usanze antiche, godendosi tutti i sapori d’Italia. Ritiene che la sua etica del lavoro provenga dalla moralità e dagli insegnamenti ereditati dalla famiglia.

Sebbene sia solo agli esordi della carriera, al di là della competenza e della presenza scenica, la stella nascente ha imparato già molto lavorando nell’industria dell’intrattenimento. Ha imparato a gestire i contrattempi, i rifiuti e le difficoltà. “Se ricevi un ‘no’, vai avanti e fai del tuo meglio per il prossimo ruolo. La quantità di no è incredibile…ma poi arriva un ‘sì’ …che ti cambierà la vita”.
