Small Business Saturday!

Small Business Saturday is a one-day event that takes place every November on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year Small Business Saturday falls on November 25, 2023. This is an annual event that was created to encourage consumers to shop locally at small businesses.

American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010 to give small, locally owned businesses a boost amidst the hustle and bustle of Black Friday. Small Business Saturday presents shoppers with a unique opportunity to show support for local businesses. Small businesses have long been the backbone of Main Street America. These are the entrepreneurs that help the local economy by providing jobs for workers from the area, supporting local causes and contributing to the local tax base.

The best way to support Small Business Saturday as a consumer is to buy locally and encourage friends and family to do the same. That includes

shopping at local brick and mortar businesses as well as at small businesses that operate online. Remember when you buy from a local small business, you are not helping a CEO purchase a third vacation home. Instead, you are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy play baseball, put food on the table for a family, or a parent pay for college for their child.

Plan Your Guest List and Menu - Deciding how many guests you'll be serving and what you plan to serve are two essential details that will guide the rest of your planning.

When creating your guest list, be realistic about how many are likely to attend and plan your menu for a few extra people so you don't run out of food. Your menu may also be influenced by how many guests you plan to host; a whole turkey is practical for a large group, but a turkey breast may be adequate for a more intimate gathering. Panorama Community Magazine • 2 tbsp chopped fresh sage • 2 tbsp chopped fresh thyme • 3 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 3 large eggs • 2 cups chicken broth, divided • 6 ounces coarsely grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 375 F. On large, rimmed baking sheet, spread ripped or cubed bread. Bake until bread is dry, about 15 minutes. Cool. Leave oven on.

In heavy skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add shallots and celery; saute 5-6 minutes. Add green onions, parsley, oregano, sage, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper; saute until celery is tender, 6-8 minutes.

Generously grease large skillet or ceramic baking dish. Place bread cubes in large bowl. Add warm vegetable mixture; toss to combine.

In medium bowl, whisk eggs and 3/4 cup broth. Add egg mixture to stuffing and toss to coat. Mix in Parmesan.

Add 1/2-3/4 cup broth to stuffing if dry. Transfer to skillet or ceramic baking dish. Cover with buttered foil. Bake 30 minutes. Remove foil; bake until golden, about 30 minutes.

Serve in baking vessel or transfer to serving platter.

“Amid inflation, the return of student loan repayments and other factors that could impact holiday spending, many consumers will be bargain hunting this year. Yield: 2 dozen cookies Cookie Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature • 1 cup Domino Golden Sugar • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1 large egg • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 teaspoon salt Royal Icing Ingredients: • 4 cups Domino Powdered Sugar • 3 tablespoons meringue powder • 1/3 cup, plus 2-3 tablespoons, warm water, divided desired food coloring To prepare cookies: In large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and egg; beat until well combined. Scrape sides of bowl as needed. Add flour and salt; beat until just combined.

Dump mixture onto lightly floured surface and divide in half. Shape each half into disks and wrap with plastic wrap. Refrigerate 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Working on lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/2-inch thick. Cut cookies using ornament-shaped cookie cutter. Place cookies on prepared pans and bake 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Remove from oven and cool at room temperature.

To make royal icing: In large mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, meringue powder and 1/3 cup water. Beat on low speed until combined. Increase speed to medium-high and beat 8-10 minutes, adding 2-3 tablespoons warm water, as necessary. Icing should be stiff enough to hold peak when tested.

Rare Kennedy Campaign Video Discovered

Recently, I was interviewed to discuss the significance and value of newly discovered 1960 Presidential campaign video footage of President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Restored video footage from the groundbreaking Presidential campaign of 1960 which featured a youthful and exuberant candidate and his lovely wife making a campaign stop at St. Francis Xavier church on South Street in Hyannis, Cape Cod, MA is among the many items of Kennedy memorabilia that has reached the collectors’ market. The 1960 Presidential campaign footage is sought after by collectors as photographs, memorabilia, and other collectibles are desirable because the footage and all the objects of the Kennedy era tell the story of one of the most important Presidential campaigns and Presidencies in history.

While 1960s campaign footage in good condition is rare, John F. Kennedy’s run for the White House was rare too. The 1960 Presidential campaign was groundbreaking for many reasons. The 1960 campaign was not only a very close race between Kennedy and the Vice President Richard M. Nixon… it was a nail biter. “Feet work hard. They carry our weight and get us where we need to go. They deserve some extra care and attention,” says Gretchen Lawrence DPM, AACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon and Associate Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

To help inspire you, here are six holiday gift ideas that promote healthy, happy feet from the foot and ankle surgeons of ACFAS: 1. Winter footwear. Outfit your loved one with the footwear they need for the season. Just keep in mind, safety doesn’t have to come at the expense of fashion. While boots featuring tall, spiked heels and narrow, pointed toes can lead to slips, falls and sprains on ice-covered surfaces, there are plenty of practical options that are also stylish.

“A low-heeled winter boot is

always going to be more fashionable than a cast and crutches,” says Dr. Lawrence. “Include some soft merino wool socks for toasty toes and to wick away moisture that can cause issues like athlete’s foot.”

2. Healthy food subscription services. Did you know that certain foods support healthy feet? Foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, like leafy greens and dairy products, promote strong bones (there are 26 of them in each foot!) and healing in the event of a fracture. Look into food box subscriptions that will send fresh produce, cheese or nuts to your gift recipient, so they can enjoy delicious foods that can help build strong bones.

3. Indoor footwear. Slippers provide cozy comfort, support and traction while indoors, making them a great gift for any pair of feet. However, if you’re shopping for someone living with diabetes, this is an especially thoughtful option as they must

take extra care to avoid scratches and cuts on their feet. Because the condition sometimes reduces blood flow to that area, it’s harder to heal from an injury or resist infection.

4. Ice packs. Ice packs make great stocking stuffers for those who suffer from plantar fasciitis, a common condition that can cause stabbing heel pain. How Small Businesses Can Retain Customer Loyalty This Holiday Season (StatePoint) Small business loyalty is on the rocks, according to a new study that finds that consumers are feeling more love for big retail brands this holiday season.

The study, from cloud-based accounting platform Xero, found that while 27% of consumers feel loyal to big retail brands, only 14% feel loyal to small businesses.

“For a small business owner who launched their business because of a passion, identifying ways to gain customer loyalty can be overwhelming. Fortunately, our data provides insights into tactics that small businesses can take to nurture ongoing relationships with customers,” says Ben Richmond, chartered accountant and U.S. country manager at Xero.

As the holiday season approaches, Xero is sharing these tips and survey insights to holiday-proof operations and keep customers satisfied: • Keep delivery affordable: According to the Xero survey, 25% of survey respondents believe that delivery should always be free, regardless of original purchase price.

“Free delivery is an effective way

to build customer loyalty, so offer it if you can. Just be sure to utilize cash flow forecasting or work with your accountant to gauge how much it will cost you long-term,” says Richmond.

If free shipping isn’t viable for your business, keep this fee low -- 30% said spending $21-$50 for delivery was agreeable. To bring down shipping costs, consider using shipping brokerages or building shipping into your pricing.

• Make delivery fast: At a point in the year when timing truly matters, it’s a good idea to offer express shipping. Thirty percent of consumers want their items faster, plus this allows you to charge for expedited shipping. On this front, customers appreciate communication. Taxpayers will be receiving this form by January 31, 2024. They should be coming to taxpayers from places such as PayPal, Venmo, eBay, etc.

Taxpayers are receiving these forms when a third-party payment platform has received for their SSN or EIN greater than $600 for their digital wallet; online marketplace; craft sales; auction sales; car or ride hailing services; real estate

marketplace; ticket exchange or resale; crowdfunding; or freelance services.

Many people received birthday gifts, support for college, etc. via these same third-party platforms; if you did, then start to gather your information now! These 1099 K will warrant a need to (a) file a Schedule C Self Employment on your taxes and/or (b) dispute and prove the 1099 K was not self-employment dollars received.

These forms were due out for 2022 but Congress/the IRS pushed them back a year until 2023.

On the other hand, good news from the IRS is that they plan to allow taxpayers to submit all documents and correspondence to the agency digitally for the 2024 tax filing season. If this truly happens, it means that taxpayers who receive a “notice” will be able to respond electronically and get a faster response than playing the “mail” game that takes months and “pass in the mail” that it presently takes to resolve an issue caused when you receive a “notice” from the IRS. The complete process should be in place by the 2025 tax season processing.

It is to alleviate processing time, staffing shortages, and phone call response time at the IRS caused by the 2.15 million returns still needing processing, reviews or corrections that is a backlog continuing because of COVID 19.

Chamber Chatter with Mary Malone, President The darkness fades later in the morning and the chill stays longer as we begin the move toward the winter season. First, we spend this month of November in gratitude and thanksgiving for all that we have.

The Chamber shares in this beautiful tradition and is thankful and grateful for our partners. Our partners allow our small but dedicated team to affect member is as we carry out the chamber’s mission for the Greater Hazleton community. Please indulge me as I highlight these partners below.

The Chamber has “super partners” that are separate non-profits organizations that coordinate and enlarge our purpose. We call these partners our Affiliates, which are recognized in depth on the Chamber’s webpage. We share office space and work closely on the programs coordinated by our Affiliate Partners.

Civic Partnership is dedicated to two key programs, the Rails to Trails and the local scholarship program aimed at keeping students from our area coming back to our community after graduation. The Leadership Hazelton Program, solely volunteers run coordinates the 8-month program with juniors from area high schools who learn about citizen ship and key topics

that make our community function. The Moutain Council of Governments is an organization dedicated to coordination and communication of our area municipalities for the betterment of our area. Our final and newest affiliate is the Downtown Hazleton Alliance of Progress focused on making our main street a revitalized hub for business, arts, culture and education.

In many communities, the economic development organization is actually part of the program and services of the Chamber. In our community CAN DO and its affiliates CAN BE have always been a separate organization that has worked closely with the Chamber. We coordinate and complement each other but our mission statements are focused on different task areas of our business community. Like peanut butter and jelly – we work better together! Another unique partnership that benefits all of the Chamber membership is the work of My Benefit Advisor on health solutions and World Kinect on energy and gas issues.

These subject matter experts are free to the membership for consulting on these two key topics.

As many of you know, the Chambers membership is made up of 63% of small businesses. Starting

With cooler weather just around the corner, it is time to give a little extra thought to your older pets.

It always amazes me how many people think that old age is a disease in and of itself. As long as your pet is healthy, there is no reason that an older pet can't be just as happy as the young ones. If you own an “old” dog or cat who seems to be slowing down, drinking more, or urinating more, don't just accept it. Find out why and fix it!

Nearly all of the problems that haunt many of our older patients can be helped with changes in diet, nutritional supplements, and other relatively easy treatments.

What A Long Strange Trip It's Been

by Rich Lipinski 2024 will be the 35th season on Montage Mountain for Northeast Pennsylvania’s “AAA” minor league team, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Railriders. It would have been 36 if not for the COVID shutdown, or maybe its 34 if you don’t count the 2012 season. In 2012 they spent the entire year on the road, and that is a minor blip for this star-crossed franchise.

The Buffalo Bison The Railriders can trace their roots back to 1886 when they began play as the Buffalo Bison In 1912 they entered the International league where they stayed until 1970. They survived two world wars, a depression, a slump in overall minor league enthusiasm, and incursions into Buffalo by the Federal League.

They left Buffalo in 1970 with a whimper. It is at this point where the long strange trip really begins.

Winnipeg Whips The decline of War Memorial Stadium, its surrounding neighborhood, and a series of poor clubs on the field put an end to the 93-year history of the original Buffalo Bison.

The club drew only 78,000 spectators during 1969. During the middle of the season, on June 11, 1970, the parent Montreal Expos moved the team to Winnipeg, where it was renamed the Whips. The Whips won only 52 of 140 games that season, and while total attendance climbed to only 89,000, the Whips still outdrew the Toledo Mud Hens by almost 3,500 people. The next season, the Whips won only 44 of 140 contests (.314) and finished 34 games from the lead.

Winnipeg and the wheat fields of Manitoba were far beyond the footprint of the East Coast-based International League. In 1972 the team moved to Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Peninsula Whips The move was a disaster: the Peninsula Whips finished last on the field, and drew only 48,681 fans for the entire 1972 season. In its final campaign in 1973, the team approached the .500 mark on the field, but sank to a new low at the turnstiles - only 45,350. Finally, the Expos gave up on the team. Moving up to the AAA ranks to take the place of the Whips were the Memphis Blues, who had played in the AA Texas League from 1967 to 1973.

Memphis Blues In 1974 and 1975, they were affiliated with the Montreal Expos, and then were affiliated with the Houston Astros in 1976.

After the completion of the 1976 season, the Blues franchise was forfeited back to the International League due to financial difficulties. The league awarded the franchise to Charleston, West Virginia, whose team had been purchased and moved to Columbus, Ohio. The new Charleston franchise continued to use the Charleston Charlies name.

Charleston Charlies The Charlies were affiliated with the Houston Astros (1977–79), Texas Rangers (1980), and Cleveland Indians (1981–83). The 1977 team won the Governors' Cup, awarded to the IL's playoff champion. After the teams owners died in 1981, the team was put up for sale and was moved to Old Orchard Beach Maine in 1984.

Maine Guides/Phillies In December 1982, Jordan Kobritz purchased the Charleston Charlies from Carl Steinfelt.. The Charlies played in Charleston in 1983, and Kobritz moved them to Maine ahead of the 1984 season. Although Old Orchard Beach is not one of Maine's yearround population centers, it is a popular summer vacation destination. Kobritz oversaw the construction of a stadium, called The Ball Park, on the outskirts of town. Fans who visited the stadium complained of rampant mosquitoes, and the team struggled at the turnstiles almost from the outset.

The Guides, the top farm team of the Cleveland Indians at the time, drew 183,300 fans in their maiden season, fourth overall in the International League. They finished second in the standings and were the runners-up in the IL playoffs. The Guides again placed second in 1985, but fell to 136,000 in total attendance, last in the eight-team league. The 1986 Guides placed last in the league, and last at the gate as well (105,600).

In 1987, the club became an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. In October 1987, John McGee won the franchise through a ruling of a three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. McGee made known his intention to move the club to a new ballpark in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. However, the ballpark would not be ready until 1989.

McGee chose to remain in Old Orchard Beach for the 1988 season and renamed the team the 'Phillies’. The Guides' attendance had held steady in 1987, but hemorrhaged fans, almost a quarter of its dismal 1987 total. They drew

Panorama Community Magazine only 80,000 people in 1988 while finishing last in their division.

The Red Barons The franchise relocated to Pennsylvania for the 1989 season and was renamed the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. Since arriving in 1989, the franchise has seen a number of issues ranging from odd to an inter-county scuffle.

The team enjoyed initial success, drawing over 500,000 fans in their first year. As luck would have it with this franchise, the biggest issue with Red Barons was Lackawanna County Stadium. The stadium was the last of half “Bowl” constructions in baseball. The stadium was a smaller version of Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, with the opening of Camden Yards in Baltimore in 1992, the stadium design became outdated inside of three years. The retro renaissance of stadium construction went to overdrive. Luxury boxes, open concourses, and seating closer to the field left the stadium outdated. As the years went by the stadium fell into disrepair, failing to meet AAA specifications on more than one occasion. After the Phillies decided to take their affiliation to newly built ballpark in the Lehigh Valley after the 2007 season, the New York Yankees entered the picture.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees The arrival of the Yankees should have brought good times to the mountain, while the team was successful on the field, the off-field

problems continued for the franchise. There were accusations of wrong doing by the former Lackawanna Commissioners, legal fights with Luzerne County, and financing promises without much regard for recent economic problems plaguing the Commonwealth in 2008. After becoming the Yankees franchisee, they set a record by becoming the first team in International League history to win five consecutive titles, but field and attendance problems plagued the franchise.

Empire State Yankees After settling most of the political problems and lawsuits, it was decided that the existing stadium would be demolished and reconstructed from scratch. In order to that, the team embarked on a year long road trip in 2012. The team based itself in Rochester, New York, at Frontier Field, home of Red Wings.

They played their entire schedule on the road, often being designated as the home team at an opponent's ballpark. In addition to Frontier Field, the Yankees also played home games at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, New York; Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, New York; CocaCola Field in Buffalo, New York; Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania; and McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

SWB Railriders The team returned home to Moosic in 2013 to brand-new PNC Park and a new name, the Railriders, to honor the railroad history of the

area. Since 2013, the team has been relatively stable, changing owners a few times and dealing with the COVID shut down in 2020.

MATURE WORKER PROGRAM The Mature Worker Program/Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) offers you an opportunity to get the job skills, and the job leads, to get that better paying job. The purpose of the SCSEP is to offer a “stepping stone” back into the work force. The goal is to help the individual obtain permanent employment. To qualify for the program a person must be at least 55 years old, a resident of Luzerne/Wyoming counties, and meet federal low-income guidelines.

SCSEP offers on-the-job training, referrals for additional classroom training (if appropriate), and referrals to employers in the community who are seeing the skills you have or will acquire in the program. It can also offer assessment, testing and counseling if desired or needed.

The on-the-job training offered by SCSEP means that you will be assigned to train at a government or nonprofit agency for 15-20 hours per week. You will be paid the minimum wage by the program for the time you spend in on-the-job training, attending approved classes or program meetings, or otherwise engaged in authorized training activities.

The Veterans History Project is a national effort to collect, preserve and make accessible the first-hand remembrances of U.S. military veterans from World War I through more recent conflicts and peacetime missions so future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand what they saw, did and felt during their service.

The stories veterans carry with them are powerful and shape who they are. Stories can hold valuable lessons, details of accomplishments and battles won or memories of friendship and camaraderie. They can also serve as reminders of sacrifice and hardship.

Participating with VHP can be as simple as recording a 30-minute (or longer) video or audio interview sharing details of your service.

Shapiro Administration Outlines Winter Preparations, Guidance for Public Readiness, and Employment Opportunities Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Mike Carroll, Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency Director Randy Padfield, and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) Chief Executive Officer Mark Compton held a media briefing on October 1th to outline plans for winter services, highlight job opportunities, and discuss how the public can prepare for the season.

"The safety of every Pennsylvanian is a top priority of the Shapiro Administration.

We've been preparing for this winter since the last one ended," Carroll said. "Across Pennsylvania, the team at PennDOT is hard at work fixing our roads, highways and bridges – making it easier and safer for Pennsylvania drivers while creating good paying jobs. Keeping our roads as safe as possible is a team effort, and we'd love to have people join our team."

The public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter they can find plowtruck locations and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed.

The information is made possible by PennDOT's Automated Vehicle Location technology, which uses units in the over 2,600 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing a

truck's location.

To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, PennDOT offers operational information and traveler resources on its winter web page. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT's 11 engineering districts.

Each year, the PTC readies itself to confront the winter elements by properly preparing its entire fleet of trucks, plows and salt spreaders and training more than 425 licensed equipment operators so they are ready to activate 24/7 staffing this fall.

Turnpike traffic and weather operations are also at the ready. The team's focus is to fully understand the conditions on the roadway and to keep the Turnpike system as free of snow and ice as possible.

"Fall has arrived in Pennsylvania, and that means that wintry weather is not far behind," Compton said. "With winter weather ahead, preparation, planning and coordination are crucial. The agencies here today have spent all year meticulously planning and preparing our crews and resources so that when the first snowflakes fall, we can properly deploy what is needed and where. VSL signs quickly reduce speed limits when visibility or roadway conditions present the need for more cautious driving.

Preliminary results show this solution effectively slowed traffic 4-9 mph during winter road conditions at the 63 locations last winter. Additionally, crashes decreased by an average by 22% on I-80 in Clearfield County last winter when compared to the previous five-year average. Locations were chosen based on crash and weather data, such as frequency of wintry conditionsthat demand safer driving, and where crashes caused by whiteout conditions led to roadway closures of more than three hours.

While the VSLs are in place, permanent speed limit signs are covered, and the normal posted speed limit is displayed on the VSL unless visibility or winter weather conditions call for slower speeds. When speed limits are reduced, a yellow light at the top and bottom of the VSL will be flashing to ensure motorists are aware of the change.

With more than $197 million budgeted for this winter's statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,700 on-theroad workers, has more than 700,000 tons of salt on hand across the state and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter.

PennDOT is actively seeking over 700 temporary equipment operators statewide for the winter season to supplement the department's full-time staff. Details on minimum requirements, such as possession of a CDL, as well as application information , are available at www. employment.pa.gov. Through the same website, job seekers can apply for nearly 100 other non-operator winter positions such as diesel and construction equipment mechanics, welders, clerks and more.

If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 135 crashes resulting in one fatality and 61 injuries on snowy, slushy or ice-covered

"Road conditions during inclement winter weather can change very quickly, making it exceptionally important to have a reliable method of receiving timely updates about hazardous weather conditions," Padfield said. "It's always a good idea to make sure others know your estimated travel time, and have some basic emergency supplies in your car, like water and a phone charger, along with any specialized items needed for young children or pets."

Padfield said it's also important to know the difference between a weather watch and warning: A watch means there is increased risk of a hazardous weather event, but its occurrence, location, or timing is still uncertain. Pay attention to forecasts and plan out what you will do if/when it occurs.

A warning means the weather event is imminent or is happening. Take immediate action to protect lives and property.

In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days.

The National Weather Service now issues "Snow Squall Warnings" which alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these dangerous squalls.

Motorists should prepare for potential wintry weather by ensuring they have supplies in their cars before heading out: food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, cell phone charger, hand or foot warmers, windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.

The PTSF is a non-profit corporation recognized by the Emergency Medical Services Act (Act 1985-45). The PTSF is the organization responsible for accrediting trauma centers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Accredited trauma centers must be continuously prepared to treat the most serious life-threatening and disabling injuries.

Level IV trauma centers, often smaller in size and located in a rural area, can provide initial care and stabilization of traumatic injuries while arranging transfer to a higher level of trauma care. A Level IV Trauma Center has demonstrated an ability to provide Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) prior to transfer of patients to a higherlevel trauma center according to the PTSF. It provides timely evaluation, stabilization and diagnostic capabilities for injured patients utilizing ATLS protocols and 24-hour laboratory/ diagnostic coverage.

In Pennsylvania there are four levels of trauma centers. Level I trauma centers provide the highest degree of resources with a full spectrum of specialists and must have trauma research and surgical residency programs. The New Year Is On The Horizon

Too many folks put off implementing healthier habits in favor of waiting till the new year. When this article comes out November 1st, we will have 61 days, about 8 ½ weeks left in the year. A person can make a tremendous improvement in their health during this time. I will share with you free habits you can start to practice and develop NOW versus waiting till the new year. If you implement even half of these during these next eight weeks, you will experience a significant improvement in your health well before those who wait till January 1st.

Let’s discuss 8 habits, one for each week, that you practice one week at a time and build upon each week.

Habit 1 - Walk! Take a look at your step data from your watch and get an idea of how many steps you are walking each day. A generalized goal is to be upwards of 8-10,000 steps daily. If you are significantly lower than that, consider adding in just 500-1000 steps each week as you work towards your goal.

Habit 2 - Drink more water! A general guideline is to drink approximately 50% of your bodyweight in ounces of water daily. (*Please discuss with your primary care provider if you have a medical condition requiring you to monitor your fluid intake). Too many folks “drink” their calories which can subsequently contribute to overeating. You likely will also see your energy levels increase as you are more properly hydrated.

Habit 3 - Eat more fruits and veggies! Fill up about half of your plate with some fruits and veggies.

Level up your goal by striving to “eat the rainbow.” This means you strive to eat a variety of colors (red, orange, yellow, green, etc.) to maximize your micronutrient intake. You incorporate this habit into your nutritional intake and you will certainly feel the difference!

consume varies depending on their age, activity level, and health goals. The range of recommended protein intake can be from around 0.35 grams to upwards of 1.2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight.

Working with a dietitian or a nutritionist can help you gain more clarity on how much protein you would benefit from eating. Regardless, make a habit of eating more protein and you will notice that you are fuller longer and may find yourself wanting to snack less.

Habit 5 - Put your fork or spoon down in between bites. This is a great place to start for those who may not be ready to change what they eat and can start by changing how much they eat. The practice of putting your fork or spoon down in between bites helps you slow down your eating. When you slow down your eating, you are more likely to recognize your body’s cues that you are full.

Habit 6 - Get more sleep! A general recommendation is to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. To improve your sleep, be mindful of caffeinated products past your midday. Going to bed around the same time each night and waking up at the same time each day, regardless of the day, will help you develop a routine of falling asleep and waking more naturally.

Habit 7 - Get some sunlight! We were not meant to stay inside all day. Even though we don’t receive the most direct sunlight this time of year and in the upcoming months, it is still beneficial to have sun exposure on our face for at least 15-30 minutes a day. Sun exposure in the morning and in the evening can also aid in improved sleep. Given our challenges with getting enough sun exposure, it could be worth it to incorporate a vitamin D supplement into your routine; however, discuss this with

your primary care provider first.

Habit 8 - Take the time to rest, mentally and physically. Our lives have started to move much faster.

With screens at work and screens in our personal life, we are almost always stimulated. Take the time, even just 15-30 minutes daily to allow yourself to wind down and let your mind and body relax. Use this time to read, journal, or even just

have a conversation with someone.

Reinforcing what I mentioned above, I dare to say that if you start incorporating even half of these habits into your daily life in the upcoming weeks, you will recognize how good it feels to feel good. You will be happy that you started now versus waiting till the new year.

Be An Encourager

As you read this, if you are discouraged by the many stresses in life, here’s the best medicine you can take. It is not an antidepressant, it’s not marijuana, heck it’s not even a chiropractic adjustment. I want you to spread encouragement to others today, and in turn, you will be encouraged. Let me explain.

Life is hard. There is pain every day. Some of us focus on that pain, get depressed, and pull others down with us. Here is the challenge to you and I. I want to grow up, to be mature physically, emotionally, spiritually.

To me, that means to be resilient. To stay strong and positive and uplifts others, even if I’m having a terrible day.

What good is it if I’m an encourager when things go good in my life, and a complainer when they go bad?

This is what I have learned. You can’t escape the stresses in life. But you can embrace them. Realize that with a resilient attitude you can overcome that stress to be stronger. And when you have experienced pain, it will make your eyes and heart more attentive to those around you that are hurting.

Chocolate by Stephen Schleicher, MD As an admitted chocoholic, I read with interest an article published in the International B u s i n e s s Times titled: 12 Scientifically-Proven Health Benefits Of Chocolate. Without further ado, here are the top 6: 1) Cardiovascular disease prevention: a study found that the daily average consumption of approximately 2oz of dark chocolate can lower blood pressure. Only patients with normal blood pressure were studied. Wonder if it would benefit those with high blood pressure…….

2) Stroke prevention: cocoa contains

compounds that help increase blood flow.

Doing so may ward off strokes.

3) Anti-inflammatory: cocoa also contains compounds that are antioxidants which may suppress so-called free radicals. Free radicals are believed to contribute to heart disease, cataract formation, and cancer.

4) Cholesterol-friendly: certain ingredients in dark chocolate lower LDL cholesterol levels, referred to as “bad cholesterol”.

5) Skincare protectant: quoting from the article: “Chocolate contains antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it beneficial to the skin. The presence of flavanols in chocolate can also act as photoprotection, shielding the skin from damaging UV rays.” Being a

6) Hormone booster: again quoting from the article: “Eating chocolate tickles our brain in a good way by having the ability to interact with the brain's neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.” I love it when something tickles my brain.

Eileen Schmidt, a resident of Smith Health Care, Ltd here in Mountain Top, recently celebrated her 106th Birthday on Oct 12th! Eileen graduated in 1936 from Sugar Notch High School and worked at Osterhout Library in the Preparation & Circulation Department. Osterhout Free Library is still going strong with a 125year legacy of Public Service just like Eileen, who dedicated her life to doing the same. Eileen always made sure her home was filled with two things: Family and Friendship! This made her home a gathering place for many generations.

She spent many years being supportive and involved in many ways in the community, assisting St. Charles School mainly in the library and assisting in far too many church bazaars to count! She is also a former Lioness of the Sugar Notch Club.

Eileen is a past President/Secretary of The Altar and Rosary Society at St. Charles Church, and as the oldest parishioner, Eileen was given the heartfelt honor of locking the doors of St. Charles Church for the final time upon its closing. She went on to become a member of Holy Family Parish and its Christian Mothers Guild.

Eileen was married to Harold Schmidt for 64 years before his passing. She has five Children, Thomas Schmidt (deceased), Margaret Viti, Mary Lenahan, Francis Continued to right.
