A New Year’s resolution is a promise a person makes for the new year. Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in the coming year.

Resolutions can come in many forms.

Some people make a promise to change a bad habit, such as quitting smoking or eating less junk food. Other people make a promise to develop a positive habit, such as starting an exercise program, volunteering in their community, or recycling more.

The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates all the way back to 153 B.C. January

Janus had two faces – one looking forward and the other looking backward. This allowed him to look back on the past and forward toward the future.

On December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into the old year and forward into the New Year. This became a symbolic time for the Romans to make resolutions for the New Year and forgive enemies for troubles in the past.

2018 Local Filing Tax Issues For Hazleton Residents

by Alice Horton -Taylor, CEO, Honest Abe’s Business & Tax Services Hazleton residents have been paying a local earned income tax rate of 2.35% until late November of this year, when a judge approved an increase to 2.75%, and back dated it to be effective on wages as of July 1, 2018.

This increase going into effect five months back causes all residents to Hazleton to face a

balance due on their local tax returns.

Act 32, passed in 2008, was designed so that local taxes were withheld in a manner that people did not have “Balance Due” local tax returns. Before Act 32 was passed the local tax collector, Berkheimer, was collecting balance due returns from many tax payers, of-

If a W-2 you receive does not show this you need to find out from your employer what your gross wages paid to you were through June 30 so that you pay the correct EIT taxes; otherwise your preparer must do 50% and are you paying 2.75% on wages that were 2.35%? Do your homework to protect yourself!

Most importantly, if you do have a “Balance Due”, pay it as soon as your preparer gives it to you to file! Why pay $25 extra to Berkheimer by forgetting/filing it late?

5 Tips To Solve Separation Anxiety In Your Pet (BPT) - With good weather and flexible work schedules, summer time is the best season for spending some extra time with your pet. However, once fall comes, the kids aren't the only ones in the family that experience the back-to-school blues. Separation anxiety can happen for many reasons among pets, but with the changing routine and lack of attention due to busy schedules, back-to-school is a common time when pet owners may start noticing changes in their dog or cat's behavior. To support them during this time Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina's Chief Veterinary Officer offers five tips to address separation anxiety in pets.

1. Get your pet into a routine. Pets love routines because it makes them feel secure. During the summer, kids are always around to make things entertaining and exciting. When

they suddenly disappear, some cats and dogs will feel sad and confused while others may experience real separation anxiety. It's important to get your pet acclimated to the change by replacing their old schedule with a new one. This new schedule should include allocating time to play after work and keeping a consistent schedule when coming and going from the house.

2. Burn off some energy. Some pets deal with separation anxiety by engaging in negative or destructive behaviors, such as howling, excessive barking or chewing on inappropriate objects. A great way to keep your dog from doing this is to take them on a walk in the morning before you leave the house to help burn off some of that extra energy. 3. Create an interactive environment. Backto-school season is a great time to buy your pet a new, interactive toy to play with. This will help mentally stimulate them and keep them occupied during the day when children are away at school. For dogs, chew toys are a way for them to relieve their anxiety, frustration and boredom. For cats, creating a play area - including scratching posts and cat furniture - can keep them entertained even when you're not home.

4. Turn up the tunes and start with baby steps. Try leaving some soothing music on at your home while everyone is out of the house.

The music will help drown out distracting noises that your dog may mistakenly associate with their family coming home. Some animal shelters have even found that playing calming music helps animals in their facilities relax. Additionally, help your pets adjust to a new routine by providing them with clear cues. For example, jingling your car keys prior to leaving for work each day can provide your pet with an important audible cue and ultimately, help with the transition to a new family schedule.

5. Spend time with your pet. It's important to remember that while you may have had a long day, your pet may have been sitting at home feeling lonely, waiting for you to come home. Spending some quality time with your pet at the end of the day is critical to helping keep them active and mentally sharp. It may be tough to fit into a busy work schedule, but be sure to build some interactive time whether it's a walk or cuddle session -to benefit both you and your pet.

Defensive Driving Tips (NAPS)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road.

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed?

Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes.

3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel.

30th Anniversary Of Baseball Retuning To NEPA

2019 marks the 30th season of baseball returning to Northeast Pennsylvania. NEPA was once a thriving area for minor league baseball, but the area went nearly 35 years without a team when the Wilkes-Barre Barons left for Johnstown. In an attempt to bring baseball back to the area, John McGee and Northeast Baseball Inc. raised nearly $500,000 to conduct a feasibility study in 1979. In October 1984, Lackawanna County Commissioners adopted a resolution to construct a multi-purpose stadium between Scranton and WilkesBarre if 2,000 season tickets were sold by Jan. 1, 1985. Cost: $238 per seat. n 1986, ground was broken on Lackawanna County Stadium at an estimated cost of $13.1 million. Northeast Baseball Inc. bought the Maine Guides and signed a player development contract with the Phillies. In 1987, the owner of the Maine Guides claimed Northeast Baseball broke its agreement. In late 1987, Northeast Baseball won the lawsuit and in 1989 baseball was set to return to NEPA at a stadium that went about $4 million over budget.

On April 26, 1989, almost 11,000 people showed up for opening night. The team drew over 500,000 people in each of the first five seasons including over 598,000 in 1992. Unfortunately, Lackawanna County Stadium was one of the last multi-purpose stadiums built before the new wave of ballpark design and construction began in the 90’s. Coupled with years of county politics and disrepair, the stadium quickly fell out of MLB requirements for AAA teams and became obsolete for the fans and the Phillies. The Phillies left in 2006 to play in Allentown at Coca Cola Field.

The franchise was very close to moving when Lackawanna County and geography secured the New York Yankees. 2007 saw a spike in attendance to over 580,000 people.

By this time, the terrible condition of stadium made it to the playing field when drainage issues in 2009 forced the team on an extended road trip. Four years after near record setting

attendance, only 298,000 people showed up in 2011. Stadium issues weren’t the only problems, as the mess surrounding local politics and the stadium spilled over to lawsuits and corruption charges, leaving a major public relations mess s u r ro u n d i n g the franchise.

In Early 2011, it was announced that despite the local mess the state would provide funding to construct a new state-of-the-art stadium.

However, it would require the franchise to embark on a record setting road trip in 2012.

The entire season would be played on the road while the stadium was being built. They played as the Empire State Yankees in 2012.

In 2013 they would open the stadium with a new team name: the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. The new stadium, along with the movement by MLB to geographically consolidate franchises closer to their home market, ensures baseball will continue in NEPA for many years to come.

Honoring 30 Years of History in 2019 During October and November, fans nominated and then voted on their all-time favorite players that graced the field in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Nominations, spanning the full history of baseball since the return to NEPA, were pared down to the finalists before the voting determined the fan's ultimate selections. Each will be honored with a custom bobblehead giveaway during the 2019 season.

Luis Severino and Gary Sanchez have been tabbed as the best pitcher and catcher of the past 30 years. Severino's bobblehead giveaway is slated for June 22 while Sanchez's giveaway

is set for August 31.

Severino received 42% of the possible votes for pitcher, besting the second-leading vote getter Jonathan Albaladejo, as well as Brandon Duckworth, Ivan Nova, Joe Roa and Randy Wolf. Sanchez received 47% of the votes behind the plate, topping Mike Lieberthal, Austin Romine and narrowly edging Carlos Ruiz.

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Rick Schu have been tabbed by voters as the top players at their respective spots on the infield. Howard played for the Red Barons in 2004 and 2005, batting .371 in '05 with 16 home runs over 61 games. Utley spent portions of three seasons in Moosic, including 2003 when he played 113 games and hit .323.

Rollins batted .274 in 2001 for SWB with 12 home runs and 69 runs batted in. Schu played over 100 games in back-to-back seasons for the Red Barons and hit over .300 both years.

Rollins bobblehead will be the first given away in 2019, set for May 11, and will be followed by Utley on June 1. Schu's bobblehead is scheduled for July 6 and Howard's is slated for August 3.

Howard received 75% of the possible votes at first base, besting Tyler Austin, Gene Schall, and Jon Zuber. Utley recorded 78% of the

votes at second, topping Marlon Anderson, Dave Doster and Jose Pirela. Rollins recorded 73% of shortstop votes, defeating Eduardo Nunez, Nick Punto, and Tyler Wade.

Schu narrowly edged Miguel Andujar, Travis Chapman, and Scott Rolen, collecting 43% of the votes to earn the third base honors.

Pat Burrell, Brett Gardner, and Aaron Judge captured the three outfield spots. Burrell played for the Red Barons during 1999 and 2000, while Gardner was a SWB Yankee and Judge was a RailRiders star, covering the full gamut of franchise identities since 1989.

Gardner topped the six-man field with 28% of the vote, followed by Judge at 27% and Burrell with 23% topping Shelley Duncan, Ben Gamel and Shane Victorino.

Gardner's giveaway is on June 8. Burrell's night is on July 19, followed by Judge on August 10.

Chinese Auction Fundraiser For Mandy Bisco & Family On November 14th, a family was left homeless when a ferocious fire erupted in their Hazleton home. At the current time, the cause is still unknown. It began at 677 Hayes Street, side of a half of a double home belonging to Mandy Bisco. Due to the quick response and great effort of the firefighters the other side of the home was saved.

Bisco, who works nights, was asleep when she was awoken by her dog Talula who was barking frantically, jumping on her and pulling Bisco’s hair. Once awake, Mandy tried to get to the first floor, but the smoke was too intense. Thinking quickly, she ran back to the bedroom grabbed the dog and climbed onto the front roof of the house wearing just the clothes on her back not even shoes or a coat. Luckily a passerby, Robbie Evancho, saw Mandy and he didn’t hesitate to stop his car and run to help her and the dog. Evancho convinced Mandy to throw the dog to him. He caught Talula and put her safely in his vehicle with his wife who was his passenger and then called to Mandy coaxing her to

jump from the roof. Evancho could see how close the flames were to her and told her that she had to jump NOW! Mandy jumped to Evancho and he helped to break her fall. She suffered from 2 sprained ankles, a sprained knee, smoke inhalation, as well as many cuts, scrapes and bruises on the feet, arms, legs, back & head, but she was NOT BURNED. Evancho as well as several others called the fire into the Hazleton Fire Department. Another passerby, Becky Dillman, stopped when she saw Bisco standing outside the fire and put her into her own personal car to take Bisco for medical treatment and comfort her through this nightmare.

The home was a complete loss. Bisco who lives there with her roommate Todd Statudo and her 2 sons Gabriel age 13 and Gavin age 11, all who also lost everything in the fire.

The home is owned by Bisco’s parents and is covered by insurance, but all the personal contents inside of the home were not insured.

A Chinese Auction Fundraiser is being planned for Sunday January 20th, 2019 from

1 to 4pm at Faith United Church of Christ, 21 Faith Drive, Hazleton, PA 18202. Over 100 baskets and Gift Certificates have been promised or donated for the event. In addition, a bake sale and food will be available for sale at the event. If anyone can not attend but still would like tickets, they will be on sale in advance and someone can drop tickets for the prizes for you. The event will accept Cash, Master Card, Visa, Discover, American Express and PayPal because of a local merchant who can process the cards.

Is The 3000 Mile Oil Change Just A Myth?

Buff It has been a staple of automotive faith that has been passed down from generation to generation, pounded into peoples heads for decades, a common belief that has been around from the first days of the automobile; All cars should have their motor oil changed at least every 3000 miles in order to properly lubricate the engine. This was arguably true based on scientific facts due to the types of oils that were on the market in days gone by. Some motorists still stick to the 3000 mile mark faithfully and would not have it any other way. But both automotive manufactures and oil developers claim that every 5000, 7500 and even 10,000 mile intervals are ideal, depending on the manufacture and driving conditions. So how often should you change your oil?

Regardless of what type of oil you use, (conventional, long lasting synthetic oil or a synthetic blend) all motor oil does break down and lose its lubricating qualities. As the miles add up the oil loses its viscosity or thickness and gets dirty. Contrary to popular belief though, you cannot tell the condition of the oil by how dark it looks. All engines contain soot and combustion by products that distort the color of the oil. But as the miles add up the oil filter will remove and trap solid contaminants. In turn the essential additives in the oil that control oil viscosity, oxidation and wear are becoming depleted. This is the point where the oil itself breaks down and the qualities of lubrication are virtually gone.

There was a time when 3000 was a good guideline and some (but not many) passenger car and light truck diesel engines still use this interval. But most oil change recommendations have changed. Look through your owners manual and you will find that most manufactures now advise motorists to use “extended service intervals” or beyond 5000 miles under “ideal” operating conditions. But what manufactures consider ideal operating conditions are basically “severe” driving conditions to some motorists. This includes stop and go driving, frequent short trips and driving in dusty conditions. So you need to look at your driving habits to calculate what oil service interval you will follow.

Many manufactures have done away with recommended oil change intervals completely.

In place they use oil reminder lights that will signal the driver when an oil change is due.

But these systems base oil life on running time, miles driven, coolant temperature and other operating conditions. The car cannot

determine if your driving is ideal or severe.

I have seen many cases of the oil change reminder light coming on at 10,000 plus miles.

The bottom line is will you base your service intervals on the oil service light alone.

Based on a survey taken by hundreds of ASE Certified Master Automotive Technicians, the consensus is that by following the manufactures recommended oil type, especially if synthetic oil is used, and by following the recommended oil change intervals you will not only protect your engine but will also follow the proper warranty requirements for the vehicle. This may be 5000, 7500 or yes, even 10,000 miles If you feel that you do a lot of severe driving then change your oil a couple thousand miles earlier. If your old school and wish to stick to the 3000 mile oil change then stick to it. It may get expensive and defeat the

purpose if you use long life synthetic oil but it’s your car. As with all auto maintenance do some research on the brands and types of extended life oil and follow the auto maker’s guidelines. So there are many that will agree or disagree. Is the 3000 mile oil change a thing of the past?

Mexican Cheese Is Hot Right Now: A Queso Primer (BPT) - Queso, anyone? With tortillas outselling hamburger and hot dog buns while salsa dethrones ketchup, Mexican food is more popular than ever in the United States and cheeses are a key component of America's favorite Mexican dishes. But are all cheeses created equally? Queso is not just that ubiquitous, neon cheese sauce you might sometimes see in the grocery store. In Spanish, the word simply means cheese, and Hispanic cheeses rival anything else you might see in the supermarket aisles, with a wide range of flavor profiles to tempt any palate.

Cacique, the number one brand of Hispanic cheeses, chorizos and cremas, wants to give quesos like Queso Fresco, Panela, Oaxaca and Cotija their day in the sun. "American cooks may not be as familiar with Hispanic cheeses as they are with others at the grocery store," Sánchez says. "The

Here's a primer in Queso 101 Queso Fresco, one of the most widely used cheeses in Mexican cooking, is a soft, fresh cheese similar in flavor and texture to ricotta, but with more savory, milky notes. Mexican cooks use it to top or stuff dishes like tacos, empanadas and enchiladas. But you don't need to limit it to Mexican cuisine. Crumble it on hot dogs, sprinkle it on soups and chowders, or make a Mexi-grilled cheese with queso fresco and green chiles.

Panela has a mild and creamy flavor, and is a crumbly, curd-style basket cheese - similar to a cross between paneer and halloumi, but less salty. This cheese is great for baking, grilling or frying. Fry a slice of panela cheese in a pan to achieve a perfectly seared snack with a gooey, delicious inside. Or, make a baked dip!

Cover the cheese with roasted salsa, then bake it in a 375-degree oven for 20 minutes. Enjoy with chips or bread.

Cotija, named after the town where it originated, is like Parmesan and dry feta but creamier, with a savory flavor and crumbly texture. Use it just like you'd use Parmesan.

In a large bowl using a hand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, vanilla, and applesauce until combined. Mix in flour mixture until just combined.

Using a large cooking scoop, arrange balls of dough on prepared baking sheet, 2 inches apart. Gently flatten each ball slightly.

Bake until golden around edges, about 12 minutes. Makes 1 doz.

Asian Turkey Lettuce Wraps Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pound ground turkey Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 small onion, diced 1/4 cup hoisin sauce 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger 1 cup cooked rice 3 green onions, thinly sliced 1 head butter lettuce

Directions: Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium high heat.

Add ground turkey and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the turkey as it cooks; drain excess fat and set aside. Add garlic, bell pepper and onion to the saucepan. Cook, stirring frequently, until tender, about 3-4 minutes.

Stir in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, ginger and ground turkey until well combined. Add rice and green onions and gently toss to combine.

To serve, spoon several tablespoons of the turkey mixture into the center of a lettuce leaf, taco-style. Serves 4

Place pan in a water bath, then bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, until it only slightly jiggles in the center. Turn oven off, but leave the cake in the oven with the door slightly ajar to cool slowly for an hour.

Remove pan from water bath and take off foil then let chill in the fridge for at least five hours or overnight. Slice and garnish with strawberries. Serves 8-10

Mediterranean Pizza Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups halved red California grapes 2 tablespoons lightly chopped Italian parsley leaves 1/4 cup slivered red onion 1 tablespoon lemon juice 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (divided) plus additional for drizzling Pinch of salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 pound ground lamb, beef, or dark meat turkey 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika Pinch cayenne 2 whole-wheat naans (about 4.4 ounces each) Directions Heat oven to 475 F. In a large bowl combine the grapes, parsley leaves, red onion, lemon juice and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

In a large skillet heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add the garlic and meat, and cook until browned, 2-3 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste, cumin, paprika and cayenne.

Place naans on parchment-lined baking sheets, brush with the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and spread the meat mixture on the naans. Bake until each naan is browned and lightly crisp, 8-10 minutes. Top with grape mixture and drizzle with additional olive oil if desired. Cut in pieces and serve. Serves 4

MASTER GARDENER: What’s Bugging Me?

by Mary Ann Miller, Master Gardener Summer brings some troublesome pests.

Some of the most annoying are gnats and fruit flies. The gnats plague us outdoors, and fruit flies seem to appear whenever we have fruit in the house. But what are those little insects found during the winter moths?

Most likely they are fungus gnats (Bradysia species), which are usually found hovering around houseplants. Adults are about 1/8 inch in length with long legs and antennae.

They are harmless, but they can be a nuisance, especially when present in large numbers.

Poor fliers, fungus gnats usually remain in the vicinity of the houseplant soil from which they have emerged. They can travel short distances, however; and you may find them near windows.

Fungus gnats frequently enter homes through screens during the warmer weather, or they may be carried inside with an infested plant. The warm indoor temperatures during fall and winter encourage their population growth. Adults live 7 to 10 days, during which time females lay up to 200 eggs. Their preferred site is moist growing soil containing peat moss and/or decaying organic matter.

The larvae which hatch from the eggs are worm-like and translucent, with a black head.

They feed on fungi and decaying plant matter found in the top 2 to 3 inches of soil, though they will also feed on plant roots and even leaves if they touch the soil. Larvae live for 2 to 3 weeks, after which they pupate in or on the soil. Adult gnats emerge about 1 week later.

The best way to manage fungus gnat problems is to reduce the moisture which attracts and sustains them. Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings, especially the top 1 to 2 inches. The dry soil will both reduce survival of eggs and larvae and be less attractive to adult females searching for a place to lay their eggs. It is also helpful to remove any decaying plant material from the pot to reduce potential food sources for larvae. Repot your plant if there is a large amount of

decaying vegetation in the soil.

If limiting moisture does not control the infestation, insecticides can be applied to the growing medium surface. It is important to be persistent when treating fungus gnats. If using short term insecticides such as pyrethrins, soaps, oils, or neem, repeat applications every 2 or 3 days will be necessary until the gnats are controlled. Persistent pyrethroid-based insecticides containing bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, permethrin, and lambdacyhalothrin may require only one treatment. Larvae may also be controlled biologically by drenching the soil with parasitic nematodes.

Infestations may also be controlled by using yellow sticky cards (sold as Gnat Stix) to attract and trap adult gnats. Place the yellow traps under the plant leaves or near the edge of the pot. Yellow attracts the insects, and, once trapped, the females will not be able to lay their eggs.

Healthy Tips For Seniors For The New Year!

by John Degenhart, DC I love being a chiropractor! It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to help someone, which allows him or her to have a happy, productive life. God has blessed us to be the best we can. A good chiropractor is like a detective, where you look for little things that the patient is doing that unknowingly is hurting their back or neck. So allow me to offer some healthy tips to help make it a great year for you!

Healthy Tips 1. Stop sleeping on your stomach. Stomach sleepers have to twist their neck to breathe, their neck misaligns, it starts to click and it can result in headaches or dizziness. In chronic cases, people then start to twist and roll their own neck, which further irritates the misalignment.

• Solution: it will take time, but sleep on your side or back, put 30 minutes of heat on your neck every night to relax the “urge” you have to crack your own neck. See your chiropractor to make sure your neck is in proper alignment.

2. Men, don’t sit on a wallet. Every time a man complains to me about his sciatica, it is always on the same side that he sits on a wallet. The thickness of the wallet will gradually push up on the sacroiliac joint and misalign it, causing sciatica.

• Solution: Truck drivers or those who sit a lot, put wallet on dash or in top shirt pocket. Don’t switch it to the opposite side. Don’t sit on it at all. Don’t give your wallet to wife, either; you’ll never get it back!

3. Women, use a lighter purse and don’t always wear the purse on the same shoulder. How often a woman will complain of neck pain or headaches, because her purse is big and heavy and she always carries it on the same shoulder.

• Solution: go through your purse, discard unneeded daily items, and maybe use a smaller purse and alternate shoulders. It will prevent neck strain, eventual arthritis, and a frozen shoulder from forming.

4. Don’t roll or crack your own neck. People feel they have a pain in their neck, and that by rolling it around, it will loosen up and feel better.

But I have observed that something in the neck is misaligned which is causing the tight feeling and the more they roll their own neck, the worse it gets.

• Solution: don’t twist your own neck or back.

Get it corrected by the chiropractor. Then you will lose the urge to crack your own body, as everything will relax into proper alignment.

Turning over a new leaf in the New Year can be tricky, but finding a way to stick with it is important when that new leaf benefits your health. If you want to take better care when looking after your teeth and gums this year, these five resolutions can keep you diligent: Schedule a Dental Appointment If it's been a while since you've seen a dentist, you're not alone. About one third of the population doesn't see a dentist yearly. But booking this appointment is one of the most important things you can do when looking after your teeth. Some conditions – such as sensitivity in the teeth or bleeding gums – are sure signs that it's time to see a dentist. Even if your teeth look and feel fine, enter a reminder in your phone or calendar for January 1 so that you can call your dentist on January 2 for an appointment.

To make the process of scheduling visits easier, book your next one before you leave their office. Most dentists send out reminder cards a week prior or call a day before your appointment.

Commit to Flossing Brushing your teeth twice a day isn't enough to keep plaque from building up on your teeth, or to completely remove bits of food from your mouth. To take the best care of your teeth, you need to floss too. If you're not in the habit of flossing, the new year is a great time to start.

New Year, New You

by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. Typically, we all tend to make a New Year's resolution that just never seems to last beyond the month of January. Who of us hasn't vowed to join a gym, embark on a weight loss journey due to holiday splurging and libation, or enroll in a smoking cessation program?

Though we all have the best of intentions, most of us don't seem to execute them effectively. This year, I suggest to all of my patients to set reasonable goals doing something that is both relatively easy and effectively healthy

at the same time.

It is my proposal to all of my faithful readers to make their own self-improvement of their dental health as a beneficial yet realistic New Year's resolution. This, I feel, is one resolution to which even the most resistant individual may stick to.

It is often said that the smile is the window to one's soul. This being said, it only follows that confidence, self-esteem, and personal success will follow. So go ahead, if you already haven't made a New Year's resolution, why not make one that you can definitely smile about?

New Year's resolutions can be as easy or as hard as you make them. Setting and adhering to a goal of diligent dental health is quite easy and it can benefit your overall health in general too.

By practicing and strictly adhering to the following simple tips, you can easily attain and maintain optimal oral health the whole year through: 1) Brush your teeth at a minimum of twice daily. I generally recommend morning and bedtime brushing with intervening brushing in instances such as high-sugar content meals or beverages. Brushing your teeth in this manner will properly remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth before it hardens to become calculus.

2) Use a fluoride toothpaste when brushing as the fluoride will assist in the prevention of tooth decay.

patients with a dental hygiene “goody bag” after each and every cleaning consisting of a toothbrush, dental floss, toothpaste, and money-saving coupons for dental products. I always inform my patients that the toothbrush is not meant to last them until their next cleaning. Rather, it is recommended to change your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months or sooner if the brush wears out from aggressive brushing.

4) Floss your teeth daily. I always recommend doing so at least once a day in evening prior to bedtime to rid teeth of debris which would cause bacteria to produce decay while sleeping. Should you consume a “meaty” meal which impacts food between your teeth, you should add an extra flossing for that day.

Flossing itself is the best means to remove plaque from in-between your teeth that a toothbrush can't reach.

5) Use a mouth rinse. An antimicrobial mouth rinse can provide extra help in controlling plaque.

6) Eat healthy meals and snacks. Healthy nutritional habits are important aspects in maintaining optimal dental health.

7) Visit your dentist for routine cleanings and check ups. In perfect oral health, it is generally recommended to visit every six months with visits becoming necessary every three to four months should less than optimal oral health exist. Routine dental cleanings and examinations are single-handedly the most effective means by which you may assure that both your teeth and gums attain and maintain favorable health.

If you follow these simple steps, you can have a great smile not to mention the satisfaction of knowing that you are adhering to your New Year's resolution of attaining and maintaining optimal dental health. Pneumonia: Why Are Seniors Susceptible?

by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers There are certain serious health conditions that we often associate with older adults. Heart disease and cancer are a few that top the list. But one that may not seem as obvious has the potential to be just as life-threatening as others in the category. Defined as a respiratory lung infection caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi, pneumonia hospitalizes approximately one million Americans each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many are 65 years of age and older. But what is it, physiologically, that makes seniors more susceptible to pneumonia than other age groups?

As we age, the efficacy of our immune sys-

tem diminishes, and our body’s natural defenses become less reliable. This, in turn, makes us increasingly vulnerable to any illness, even if it’s relatively minor. As a result, something as common as a cold or mold spores in the home may lead to an infection of the lungs for seniors. Similarly, frailty – especially from ongoing recovery – can make it harder for seniors to cough and rid the lungs of certain infectious elements. Seniors may also be at greater risk if they have existing health conditions such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), HIV, and heart disease.

tainly doesn’t represent an inevitable aspect of aging. While there is no 100% guaranteed form of pneumonia prevention, there are steps seniors can take to reduce their overall risk. Doing so can help them continue to live life to the fullest – safely, healthily, and independently.

Ways to Reduce Pneumonia Risk Get Vaccinated:Because pneumonia often appears in seniors who have the flu, getting vaccinated against influenza is recommended. Vaccine options include Fluzone High-Dose, Fluad and Flublok Quadrivalent. Seniors should talk to their physician about which is best. Additionally, to help guard against pneumonia, the CDC recommends that seniors get the two available vaccinations: PCV-13 (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) and PPSV-23 (pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine). Seniors should get PCV-13 first, then follow up with PPSV-23 approximately a year later.

Prioritize Hygiene: It may seem like common sense, but simply washing our hands and using hand sanitizer can make a world of difference.

Seniors should avoid germ-ridden surfaces (e.g., door handles, grocery cart handles) whenever possible, and keep their distance from any sick relatives or friends. As mentioned, it doesn’t take much for seniors to develop pneumonia, so all hygiene best practices are worth following.

Don’t Smoke or Take Steps to Quit:Smoking negatively impacts just about everything in our bodies, but the lungs obviously receive a significant amount of damage. Those who smoke are at a greater overall risk of pneumonia because the lungs’ defense mechanisms often become compromised.

Practice a Healthy Lifestyle: Seniors should follow a physician-approved diet and exercise regimen. This will help bolster their immune system and reduce the risk of not only pneumonia, but a number of other health conditions.

Why Buying Glasses Online Is A Waste Of Time

You may have heard that it’s cheaper and offers more selection, or maybe you don’t want to leave the comfort of your home. If these factors play a role in your decision-making, I would like to remind you that glasses are a medical device that must be tailored to each person’s individual face shape and prescription.

To debunk the cheaper cost fallacy, it’s important to remember that many people do not utilize their vision insurance plans to their full benefit when purchasing through online retailers. Most insurance companies provide significant amounts of money toward lenses and frames. A flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) can also be used toward glasses coverage. Most online companies do not accept insurance, leaving these dollars wasted. Often times, glasses are cheaper when using one’s insurance versus buying online.

Warranties, adjustments, and returns may also be challenging with online retailers creating a hassle if a prescription is made incorrectly or if glasses do not fit comfortably.

Furthermore, proper fit is crucial when choos-

ing glasses. Correct size is critical not only for comfort, but also for accurate vision. If a person is not looking through the center of the lens, this can create visual distortion and discomfort.

Anyone who has ever looked for glasses online will have heard of pupillary distance (PD). This is the distance between a person’s eyes, and with proper measurement it determines where the visual center of the lens will be placed within the glasses. Attempting to take your own PD is like trying to cut your own hair-- challenging with questionable results. While an optician can give you this measurement, it is not a standard part of a glasses prescription. It also does not assure that glasses will be made accurately as there are other measurements required when selecting a frame.

For example, fitting a bifocal or progressive lens requires a minimum frame size and a well-fitting frame. This also holds true for those with a higher-than-average prescription, as lens material and design matter for both aesthetics and function.

Based on previous studies, the likelihood of getting an accurately made prescription from an online retailer is also rare. In approximately 50% of cases, glasses ordered online (if received at all)

contained an inaccurate prescription or had a safety issue.

A large safety issue with online lenses is that they may not meet shatter resistance specifications.

This poses a greater risk of eye injury, which is especially scary when dealing with young children.

The biggest safety issue with ordering glasses online, however, is that one might not have regular eye exams. It can be tempting to fill an older glasses prescription online if vision appears to be unchanged, but this does not mean that the eyes are free of disease. When bypassing the eye doctor, the patient is at risk for having a serious ocular health condition such as glaucoma or macular degeneration go undetected.

In summary, buyers should beware when purchasing glasses online. While it may seem appealing to order them from the comfort of one’s own home, an accurate and well fit pair of glasses comes when prescribed and dispensed by an eye care professional and their staff. by Stephen Schleicher, MD. Here are some recent findings of intertest: 1) I frequently comment that for most adults vitamin and mineral supplements are a waste of money and some may even be harmful.

Now a national survey published in JAMA Pediatrics and reported on in the New York Times found that “a third of children under

19 are regular users of dietary supplements”.

Multivitamins were most commonly taken followed by vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and melatonin. To quote the lead author: “in healthy children, there’s no evidence that supplements have any benefits and some evidence of serious risks, so there’s no

2) Instant soups, often sold as “ramen”, cause over 9,500 scald burns each year in U.S. kids according to a study presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference. Be careful.

3) Yippee: US smoking rate hits an all-time low. Some 14% of Americans smoke, down from an astounding 42% in the early 1960s.

The main reasons: anti-smoking campaigns, cigarette taxes and smoking bans. Still, some 30 million Americans currently smoke, helping to kill themselves and others breathing second-hand smoke. Smoking causes not only wrinkles but (surprise, surprise) lung cancer.

4) Sweat too much? A new prescription antisweating wipe-on pad is now available. Called Qbrexza, I have begun prescribing the pads to my patients. Seem to work.

EASE Launched At LVH–Hazleton To Support Patients’ Families During Surgeries provided by Lehigh Valley Health Network Waiting to hear how a surgical patient is doing is now easier at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Hazleton. In collaboration with perioperative services at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), a new mobile tool was recently introduced to improve communication with families of surgical patients. This tool – called Electronic Access to Surgical Events, or EASE for short – is HIPAA compliant, modernizes hospital communication, reduces family anxiety and improves the patient/family experience. LVHN is the first health system in Pennsylvania to offer EASE.

Using a secure smartphone application downloaded from either Apple’s App Store or Google Play, a patient’s family or friends can receive real-time text messages on the status of the patient during surgery.

How EASE works When patients download and register EASE, they add their contacts to the app. On

surgery day, those contacts will receive a text message with instructions to receive updates.

“The patient drives who gets the messages.

There’s no chance for us to transpose a phone number because we’re not typing in any numbers,” says Hope Johnson, DNP, RN, Director of Perioperative and Endoscopy Services, LVH–Cedar Crest.

Initially, this technology was piloted at LVH–Hazleton for patients undergoing orthopedic, bariatric and robot-assisted surgeries. Survey data for the period June 6-26, 2018, indicates the EASE application has been well received by patient families. Patients shared the following comments about the LVHN EASE application experience: • “This was amazing. It saved time of staff repeatedly coming to update me, as well as eased my mind the entire operation. I am highly satisfied.”

• “Everything about EASE is great.”

• “I love this app. All my family members I added were updated including my husband, my mom and my dad that lives all the way in New York. My dad was able to work with ease knowing all updates of the surgery at all times.

It’s like he was there. He really loved the app too. So did my husband and my mom. My husband was able to sit in the waiting room with ease knowing he’ll get automatic updates about my surgery, and my mom was able to take care of my daughter with ease while getting all updates of my surgery.”

Due to the favorable response from patients and families, the program has been expanded to other LVHN hospital locations for surgeries longer than one hour. EASE is provided as a complimentary service by LVHN for surgery patients and their families.

Sprains, Strains And Other Pains A Head-To-Toe Guide To High School Sports Injuries Realizing no high school sports player wants to be sidelined, “our model at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is ‘return to play without delay,’” says Richard Canlas, MD, board-certified sports medicine physician with LVPG Orthopedics and Sports Medicine–Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton. “We try to restore function to preinjury levels as safely and quickly as possible.”

Before returning to play, young athletes should have pain-free range of motion, full strength and ability to perform sports-specific skills. Reaching that point requires time and often means keeping an athlete from the game for a period of time – which varies because everybody heals differently.

Injury severity also determines treatment and length of removal from play. Common injury categories include: • Sprains and strains – Injuries to ligaments (sprains) or muscles or tendons (strains) should be graded on whether tissue is stretched, partially torn or fully torn, as healing time varies.

• Fractures – Injuries that involve a cracked or broken bone need to be assessed to determine whether healing requires casting or surgery.

• Concussions – LVHN concussion programs can assess traumatic brain injury.

“Having a neuropsychiatric screening before starting a sport, (such as ImPACT® test) can provide a baseline for comparison that may aid recovery and return to play,” Canlas says.

PRICE of Healing Taking these steps immediately after an injury can speed healing, reduce pain and control swelling.

• Protection: Use crutches or braces to stabilize or take weight off an injured body part and prevent further injury.

• Rest: Stop activity as soon as you’re hurt and get evaluated. Playing through pain can make an injury worse and delay recovery.

• Ice: Wrap a cold pack or bag of ice or frozen peas in a cloth (to prevent frostbite) and apply to the injury for 10 to 20 minutes twice a day or as needed to ease pain, reduce inflammation and control swelling.

• Compression: Snugly wrap the injured area with an elastic bandage such as an ACE bandage to provide support and minimize swelling.

• Elevation: Raise the injured body part

above the level of your heart to reduce pain and swelling.

National Cervical Health Awareness Month The American Social Health Association (ASHA) and the National Cervical Cancer Coalition have named January Cervical Health Awareness Month to encourage women across the country to get screened for cervical cancer and receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine if they are eligible.

According to the American Cancer Soci-

ety (ACS), about 13,240 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed in 2018 and an estimated 4,170 women died from the disease.

Cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, with regular screening tests and follow-up. Two screening tests that can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early is the Pap test and the HPV test. The Pap test (or

Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately. The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause these cell changes.

The ACS regularly reviews and updates the cervical cancer screening recommendations when new evidence suggests that a change may be needed. The latest recommendations are: - All women should begin cervical cancer screening at age 21.

- Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should have a Pap test every 3 years. They should not be tested for HPV unless it is needed after an abnormal Pap test result.

- Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have both a Pap test and an HPV test every 5 years. This is the preferred approach, but it is also ok to have a Pap test alone every 3 years.

- Women over age 65 who have had regular screenings with normal results should not be screened for cervical cancer. Women who have been diagnosed with cervical pre-cancer should continue to be screened.

- Women who have had their uterus and cervix removed in a hysterectomy and have no history of cervical cancer or pre-cancer should not be screened.

- Women who have had the HPV vaccine should still follow the screening recommendations for their age group.

- Women who are at high risk for cervical cancer may need to be screened more often.

Women at high risk might include those with HIV infection, organ transplant, or exposure to the drug DES. They should talk with their doctor or nurse.

At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we treat gynecologic cancers, including cervical cancer, painlessly and non-invasively with radiation therapy. When cervical cancer is treated with radiation, several types are commonly used. We use external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) to deliver high-energy X-rays which causes damage to cancer cells and thus their ability to multiply. Treatments only take about 15 to 30 minutes and side effects are usually minimal. Several factors determine candidacy for radiation therapy treatment including the stage of the cancer, potential side effects, age, and overall health.
