A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER ‘Enter the beautiful jungle of children’s literature’ Frances Hardinge

2016 has been a very exciting year for Macmillan Children’s Books, beginning with Frances Hardinge winning the Costa Book of the Year in January for The Lie Tree. Throughout the year we celebrated Macmillan’s heritage as Rudyard Kipling’s first The Jungle Book and Just So Stories publishers, with beautiful new classic editions as well as an exciting reimagining of Kipling’s best-loved adventure from Bear Grylls in New Jungle Book Adventure: Spirit of the Jungle.

We launched our new specialist illustrated imprint, Two Hoots, at the Bologna Book Fair, as well as republishing the nation’s eight favourite Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler picture books with updated cover designs for a new generation to enjoy. What the Ladybird Heard Next by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Lydia Monks was number one in the picture-book charts for seven consecutive weeks, and in our preschool imprint, Campbell, sales of our Busy Books series reached two million copies worldwide.

This 2017 stocklist highlights new titles publishing between January and June, as well as the full illustrated range of our published titles.

Responding to feedback from booksellers and librarians, we have also updated and refocused our Special Interest pages at the back, including more guidance to help you recommend the right book to the right young reader.

2017 begins with a heart-warming illustrated gift book, 100 Hugs, by Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell. It is the perfect book to welcome our readers to the New Year. As we move from our 2016 celebration of the jungle to the zoo, 2017 marks thirty-five years of Rod Campbell’s Dear Zoo, which has now sold more than seven million copies. Celebrations will extend to his full list of Macmillan titles, with our new website www.dearzooandfriends.com hosting all the news and activities you need to join in the occasion. In January, Campbell publishes Night Animals and Sea Creatures, part of a new First Explorers non-fiction range of push-pull-slide board books, perfect for introducing very young children to real-life concepts.

Our picture-book list launches a new Lydia Monks series in May with Twit Twoo School, featuring a bright cast of characters whose first days of school bring some amazing discoveries. Also new this spring is an exciting partnership between Elli Woollard (The Giant of Jum) and Steven Lenton (illustrator of Frank Cottrell Boyce’s novels) with The Great Gran Plan, a delightful fairy-tale crime caper. Two Hoots is excited to present a new Emily Gravett title this year: individual and quirky as you would expect, Old Hat is about fitting in and being accepted for who you are, with or without a glamorous hat! Second picture books from Morag Hood and Bethan Woollvin are also key titles to look out for from Two Hoots as it celebrates its first birthday.

Macmillan continues its publishing with major brands in 2017 too. The Moomin Colouring Diary will help you with your busy schedule and Create your own Alice & the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party will help you plan your parties! Ten Terrible Dinosaurs by Paul Stickland joins the classic Dinosaur Roar! that we published in 2016, along with a new range of World of Dinosaur Roar! board books, introducing the youngest readers to individual dinosaur characters. All endorsed by the Natural History Museum, this brand continues to go from strength to strength.

For newly independent readers it’s another year of laughter, from the ever-growing Treehouse series by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton, which expands to The 78-Storey Treehouse in January, to football-playing llamas in Scott Allen’s hilarious debut, Llama United, out in May. Meanwhile, Roddy Doyle’s Gigglers return in the paperback edition of Rover and the Big Fat Baby.

For middle-grade readers, debut author Amy Wilson brings us the utterly enchanting A Girl Called Owl, a magical story about a girl who discovers that her father is Jack Frost. The incomparable Elizabeth Laird’s Welcome to Nowhere is an important and timely read about the Syrian refugee crisis, asking, Where do you go when you can’t go home?

Our prize-winning YA list continues to expand from January with a second moving novel from Sara Barnard, author of teen-debut bestseller and Zoella Book Club pick Beautiful Broken Things. A Quiet Kind of Thunder is a sensitive and warmly told love story with a difference, about a girl who can’t talk and a boy who can’t hear.

Finally, we’re thrilled to welcome journalist and teen ambassador Gemma Cairney to the Macmillan list in March with her first book, OPEN: A Toolkit for How Magic and Messed Up Life Can Be. In this one-stop guide for anybody who needs it, Gemma talks about teenage issues, including love, heartache, life, death and depression. Having an author or illustrator come to visit your school or library is a great way to bring books to life for children. You can write to any of the authors and illustrators published by Macmillan Children’s Books c/o Children’s Publicity Department.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL Schools and Libraries: to order promotional material please write to the Children’s Marketing Department, stating clearly any specific requirements. All material will then be forwarded to you free of charge, subject to availability.

Author visits require thorough planning, so you will need to contact us about your chosen author well in advance. Your letter should include a few dates for the author to select from, the ages of children attending and the type of event you would like to have.

A book makes a great souvenir of the day and authors are happy to sign them after the event has finished. Contact your usual supplier to arrange books for sale at the event and circulate a note to parents in advance so that that children can bring in some money.
