Benchmark setups Valve Steam Machine Is Here: Should It Replace Your Gaming PC or Console? What the Steam Machine actually is The Steam Machine is manufactured directly by Valve, unlike the original 2015 Steam Machine concept where Valve set minimum specifications for other hardware makers to build toward. It is a small, cube shaped console style PC that runs SteamOS and connects to a TV or monitor, built to bring your existing Steam game library into a living room, console like experience rather than requiring a full desktop setup This is the part that matters most if you are trying to judge whether it is worth the price. The Steam Machine runs a semi custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and twelve

threads clocking up to 4.8GHz, paired with a semi custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics chip with 28 compute units and 8GB of dedicated GDDR6 video memory, alongside 16GB of DDR5 system memory. The CPU runs at a notably low 30 watt power draw while the GPU runs around 110 watts, and Valve has compared the CPU’s real world performance to a Ryzen 5 7600X. Valve’s own headline claim is that the Steam Machine is roughly six times more graphically powerful than the Steam Deck, Valve’s handheld. In terms of real world comparisons, Valve has positioned its performance as roughly on par with a standard PlayStation 5. The device targets 4K output at 60 frames per second using upscaling rather than pure native rendering, which is how it manages to hit that target despite not using flagship level hardware

In practical terms, this puts the Steam Machine in a similar performance category to current generation consoles, not in competition with a high end desktop gaming PC running a top tier graphics card. If your frame of reference is a powerful custom built rig, the Steam Machine will not match it. If your frame of reference is a PS5 or Xbox Series X, it is a much more direct comparison. The price, and why it matters so much right now The base configuration, with 512GB of storage and no bundled controller, starts at $1,049, while the fully loaded 2TB model bundled with the new Steam Controller runs $1,428. For a lot of people following the announcement since late last year, that number came as a surprise, and the reason behind it connects directly to
