Yup, it’s that time of year again, when we give you something to look forward to and tickle your fancy with what we’ve lined up in Pangdemonium’s upcoming Season! Our 2016 Season of Love hit you with three stories – The Effect, Falling and Rent - examining love in its many splendored forms. Looking ahead to 2017, we decided that we wanted to free ourselves from having a theme to our Season. We just wanted to share more ass-kicking stories with you. So for our highly anticipated 2017 SEASON - with the continued support of our wonderful Patron Sponsor OUE - we’ve put together three productions that are wildly diverse in style, genre and subject matter. We’ve got the hilarious, hair-raising black comedy/psychological thriller THE PILLOWMAN, the world premiere of an exciting new play TANGO, and the critically acclaimed, award-winning musical FUN HOME. We then realized that all three stories are bound together as a triptych by a unifying theme – Family (And Other Natural Disasters). They are, if you will, distant relatives in an extended family. THE PILLOWMAN examines an “unusual family” that is the stuff of nightmares; TANGO provocatively presents a real-life predicament facing a real-life “modern family”; and FUN HOME chronicles one woman’s struggle to fit into, and also free herself from, her highly “dysfunctional family”. A thrilling threesome of eclectic and electrifying stories, with all the heart, soul, blood & guts, and much, much more, that audiences love about our work.
It’s going to be an extra exciting year ahead for Pangdemonium. •

In order to accommodate increasing demand for our productions, 2017 is the first year we’re staging all three shows in our Season in 600-plus-seater theatres, enabling us to welcome more of you into our Season Ticket family. As an “extra-curricular activity”, we are proud to be part of Singapore International Festival of Arts 2017, with yet another world premiere of a spanking new production - so new that it doesn’t have a title yet! We’ll be conducting our annual “Triple Threats” and “Stage Write” workshops, to nurture aspiring theatre practitioners. We’re looking forward to partying with our Season Ticket holders at our annual Pow Wow. And we’re fiendishly plotting for our 2017 FUNdRaising Party… Phew!
For now, we are thrilled to present you with a brand new version of our SEASON TICKET! The Pillowman “A spellbinding stunner of a play.” - New York Times
In 2007, an acclaimed production of this play was staged in Singapore. Directed by Pangdemonium’s Artistic Director Tracie Pang, it was described in a Flying Inkpot review as “absolutely unmissable”. A decade later, in response to overwhelming demand from our audiences, we are thrilled to announce the return of THE PILLOWMAN. A writer of short stories is being questioned by the police regarding a series of child murders. What do his stories have to do with the gruesome deaths? Why is his brother, a gentle man-child with special needs, being locked up in the next room? Exactly who, or what, is “The Pillowman”? And “what’s in the box?”... As the interrogation escalates, terrifying tales are told, buried bogeymen are resurrected, and it becomes impossible to distinguish fact from fiction. A nailbiting, nightmarish nursery story for grownups, THE PILLOWMAN will have you squirming on the edge of your seats even as you howl with laughter. THE PILLOWMAN won the Olivier Award for Best New Play, and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play.

Tango World Premiere Inspired by true events, TANGO was commissioned by Pangdemonium as our very first staging of a piece of new Singapore writing and we are thrilled to be producing the world premiere of this special play. Happily married Singapore-born banker Kenneth and British teacher Liam are the loving adoptive parents of 12-year-old Caspian, a boy saved from an abusive home. Together, they are making life work as a family in idyllic suburban England. When Kenneth reluctantly returns to Singapore to care for his ailing father, an insidious incident triggers a butterfly effect that escalates into epic proportions. As a tsunami of secrets, skeletons and sequins comes cascading out of the closet, this motley family is thrown into a typhoon of trials, tirades and turmoil that threatens to tear them apart. In the eye of this storm is young Caspian, learning the hard way about the true meaning of “family values”. Acclaimed Singaporean playwright Joel Tan (The Way We Go, Mosaic, Café) has created a modern tale about fathers and sons that asks urgent and provocative questions about love, acceptance, compassion, tradition, and the infuriating complexities of family. A 21st century fable that gives us an idea of where Singapore fits into the 21st century world, TANGO is timely and topical, poignant and profound, heartwarming and hilarious. And above all, humane.

Fun Home “Heart-gripping and cathartic.” - New York Times
The 2015 Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, FUN HOME is “a blazingly original heartbreaker and a nonstop theatre of invention.” (Newsday) Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling autobiographical memoir, FUN HOME is a powerful coming-of-age tale, and a passionate portrayal of a daughter’s determination to understand and connect with her brilliant, volatile and enigmatic father. As we get to know Alison intimately at three different ages, startling memories are revealed of her uniquely dysfunctional family and we see the life-changing moments that shaped her destiny. Along her journey of self-discovery, we uncover the dark secret that tormented her father and tore her family apart. A deeply personal story about seeing parents through a child’s eyes, and then getting a whole new perspective as a grownup. FUN HOME is an enlightening and enriching experience you will never forget. Pangdemonium is proud to be staging the Singapore premiere of this groundbreaking and breathtaking musical.

Pangdemonium’s mission is to tell stories on the stage that are challenging, inspiring, relevant, accessible, and above all, of the highest artistic, entertainment and production values, in a league with the best of theatre internationally. Since our inception in 2010, our work has been gaining tremendous momentum, bringing more and more people to the theatre, winning prestigious awards, and earning critical acclaim:
“The zenith of theatre making in Singapore.” Crystalwords “Pangdemonium has reached a pinnacle of excellence that inspires.” The Flying Inkpot “A theatrical powerhouse presenting shows worth your every penny.” IS Magazine “A steamroller theatre company: the result of hard work, humility & laser-beam focus.” Poached.mag “One of the best theatre companies in Singapore.” The Business Times We are the first theatre company in Singapore to offer a Season Ticket, which is helping us to continually expand our loyal audience base. Our Next Generation Youth Education Programme includes our highly successful Triple Threats Workshop to mentor young Musical Theatre performers, and our Stage Write Playwriting Workshop to nurture aspiring young dramatists. We firmly believe that this kind of “sowing seeds” ethos is the way to keep the Singapore arts scene dynamic, fresh and progressive. Rule #1 of theatre is that it has to be entertaining – but it is capable of achieving so much more. Pangdemonium tells stories that tackle challenging issues, ask difficult questions, provoke constructive debate, and hopefully lead us all on a path towards discoveries of our communal human experience; that jolt us all from a collective passivity and make us take positive action, that expose us all for our flaws and frailties, and dare us to change; that help us see someone else’s point of view, and share in someone’s else’s journey; that celebrate life, and champion struggle, survival and the human spirit; that make us count our blessings, appreciate this world more, and strive to live more meaningful lives; stories that Singapore audiences can relate to and identify with, and at the same time, have a global resonance and universal significance. In short, we create work that lives up to our motto “Ass-kicking adventures in theatre” – because theatre should give us all a much-needed kick in the nether regions once in a while.
Pangdemonium’s commitment to producing world-class theatre is only possible with the generosity of our donors and sponsors who believe in us.
